Demi Moore issues statement on man found dead in her pool: ‘I am in absolute shock’

2014 LACMA Gala
Over the weekend, a 21 year-old man was found dead in Demi Moore’s pool while the actress was away. Initially reports were unclear how this tragedy happened, if any of her children were at home at the time or if Moore even knew this man. TMZ has issued a follow-up stating that “Demi’s caretaker threw the party and invited the victim.” As for the cause of death, TMZ has a source who states that foul play was not involved and that “The man who died did not know how to swim and it appears he slipped and fell in the pool.”

Moore has since issued a statement to clarify that she was out of the country when the accident happened and that her thoughts are with the victim and his family. Her statement sounds very heartfelt.

“I am in absolute shock,” she said in the statement. “I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got this devastating news.

“The loss of a child is an unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man’s family and friends,” she continued. “I ask that you please respect the privacy of all concerned during this sensitive time.”

A neighbor also told TMZ that Moore’s three children with ex Bruce Willis have been staying at the house and throwing “parties every day, day and night.” However, law enforcement told the site that no one from Moore’s family was present when the body was found.

Police have identified the deceased as Edenilson Steven Valle of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

[From People]

A report in the LA Times quotes a police sergeant who states that “from what I understand it was a staff member [who drowned].” This is somewhat inconsistent with TMZ’s report that the man was a friend of Demi’s employee.

Demi’s daughter Scout celebrates her 24th birthday today, and she’s been partying and posting photos and videos online, so it seems like that’s why Demi was traveling, as People mentions.

This is a sad story and our thoughts go out to the victim and to his family. I can’t imagine the guilt and sadness that people must be feeling and it just reminds you that tragic accidents can happen at any time.

    This story is sketchy..

    • Kiddo says:

      Yeah, lil’ bit.

    • SnarkySnarkers says:

So sketchy! I saw a picture on TMZ with investigators in her backyard and there are multiple pool floats in the pool. Its a little strange to me that a grown man could drown with all the stuff he could have grabbed onto. Definitely think drugs/drinking/both are involved here.

  2. qwerty says:

Wierd. From what I gather there was a party at her home while no one who actually lives there was home?? Only in Hollywood. I hope the victim’s family don’t sue though I wouldn’t be surprised.

    • qwerty says:

Ugh that’s a typo, I promise I know how to spell weird lol

    • aga says:

Doy you think that the big Hollywood properties are left alone when owners are away? Each of these houses has their own caretaker who lives there permanently.

      • Ellecommelejour says:

Aga you’re right! But I would never imagine inviting one of my friend when my boss is away not even throwing a party! If this is true…then only in Hollywood this can happen …

      • qwerty says:

I doubt each house has someone living there 24/7, remember the bling ring? They just looked up online that the owner was at a gala or something and broke in, no one caught them.

  3. Jess says:

This is really sad, but the stories definitely don’t make much sense at this point. Why would he be at the house alone if he wasn’t a staff member? I’m thinking drugs and alcohol must’ve been involved, whether with the victim or with the employee who invited him over, I don’t understand how you could not realize your guest is missing otherwise. I also wonder if she lets people throw parties when she’s not there, very strange and sad story.

I’ve always wanted a pool in my backyard but I’m so afraid of something like this happening, especially with children.

  4. Wooley says:

I don’t believe that none of her kids were there.

    • hashtagwtf says:

This. Sounds like the kids threw a party, got drunk and saw the body next day and left. But i hope I’m wrong and it’s really an accident. But the whole story doesn’t add up and sounds really sketchy.

      • Aussie girl says:

I really think that a daughter/daughters where there when the body of the young man was found and left leaving the assistant as a kind if a scape goat even if the death was accidentally, just to not tie any of daughters to this. But then I’m quite syndical and this may be the truth. All in all, a man has died far to young and it’s sad for all.

    • The Original Mia says:

We live in a world where people post everything. Her youngest kids were in France. They’ve been posting pics on their IGs. Rumer, I think, was performing this weekend in the play Chicago. So, they definitely weren’t involved.

    • qwerty says:

The did all post they’re in/on their way to NYC for the weekend.

  5. Erinn says:

I find it mostly gross that she’s like “oh the loss of a child” but she actively dates dudes in that age range.

    • the_blonde_one says:

I read it as more ‘everyone is someone’s child’ and any parent would be devastated.

      • Erinn says:

I guess. It just stuck out to me, given that she’s constantly running after guys that are in their 20’s.

    • Bethie says:

      …Really?

    • qwerty says:

lmao you can’t be serious. That beach, pretending to be sad a young man died while dating other his age at the same time! THE NERVE!

    • FingerBinger says:

Demi can’t express shock at parents losing a child because of who she dates?

    • mytbean says:

Meh, I’m with the others in thinking that this was “everyone is someone’s child” but – even considering her dating pool, a lot of people who date a lot younger tend to see everyone else but the person they’re in bed with as young. Their sexual partner is “old at heart” or “more mature” than the others.

  6. Fori says:

Yeah so her kids were throwing parties day and night for the last few weeks according to the neighbours and magically there was no member of the family there the one night a young man dies at a party. Blame a staff member instead. This story just sounds all wrong. I really hope there isn’t more to it but I bet there is.

    • Bella says:

      +1

Both Demi and her kids are shady, so I doubt they weren’t somehow involved. I also read about the pool parties they’ve been throwing and saw some of the pictures.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

How very sad. Pool accidents account for a frightening number of deaths and disabilities for men in that age group.

    • qwerty says:

I bet it’s really the combination of pools+alcohol and/or drugs and not just pools.

  8. kri says:

I’m sure the house sitter/caretaker had people over when the family was out of town. That wouldn’t be unusual esp.in H’wood. It’s just weird that someone went missing and no one noticed. I’m guessing alcohol/drugs were involved. It’s sad, and I hope that the tab journalists don’t hound this kid’s family just to get a story.

  9. Tig says:

I bet the police are looking at all the media this daughter posted of those parties. I can see a caretaker being given the OK to have a few friends over in her absence, esp if that person was a long time employee. This person could have slipped and fell into the pool when he was leaving- which would help explain why he wasn’t found until early the next am. Still very sad all the way round.

  10. Triple Cardinal says:

It’s NOT strange that a guest slips away and nobody notices. It happens all the time at parties, especially big, loud ones. The guest is noted only by their absence–and that could be hours later, depending on the amount of drinking going on.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

You’re absolutely correct, Triple Cardinal. In 3 weeks, we’ve had 2 big celebrations at my son’s house. There’s usually a bit of alcohol involved, and beds are always provided. Guests are wandering in and out of the house all night. We had a particularly cold snap this past weekend, and being a mother hen, it was me regularly asking throughout the night when I hadn’t seen someone’s for a while, “Where’s, Smithy/Tara/Ash…” He lives right next to a busy road, too, so that’s always a concern for wanderers…. We’re good at keeping an eye on each other, but not everyone is. A few years ago, my kids went to a party around the corner from us. They walked home safely, but at around 10am, one boy was found to be missing, along with someone’s car keys. No one knew how long he’d been gone, because no one noticed he had gone. Minutes later, the police arrived to say he’d crashed another guest’s car and had been found dead at the scene. Unfortunately, when alcohol and/or drugs are involved, people expose themselves to all sorts of risks, but simple and unintended negligence can also play a part when people are engaged in having fun together.

  11. Chris says:

“I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got this devastating news”

I read this as “Neither me nor my daughters were there, I swear. Oh, and yeah, sad about the tragedy and all, but we weren’t there”!

    • boredblond says:

And if they were, they were only a private jet away from getting the hell away from there. I would think she has a security set-up that allows her to see her home from anywhere in the world..quite common, so she would know who’s there.

  12. Dana says:

The man couldn’t swim. Accidents happen. If you Google his name, a YouTube account photo comes up of a boy around that age. The name “Edenilson” itself is Brazilian. Not far fetched to think she had some staff members from other countries working for her. They invited their friends and family for a party, to show off the mansion, and tragedy struck.

    • Neah23 says:

As someone said above Demi kids were throwing parties day and night for the last few weeks according to the neighbours and pictures they posted on Instagram. Conveniently Demi nor her kids were there the one night a young man dies at a party.

Something smells fishy to me I don’t believe the girls had anything to do with it but I do think they were there when it happened and are trying to cover it up for legal reasons.

  13. Bella says:

TMZ also reported that Demi and her daughters have been throwing pool parties constantly before leaving town. Apparently Demi and her daughters post pictures all the time of their pool filled with people drinking. This is not that sketchy considering that Demi herself went to rehab for being addicted to whippits and considering how bizarre two of her daughters’ behavior is as well.

    • Neah23 says:

Didn’t one of her daughters just get out of rehab not to long ago? As you said Demi her self was in rehab not to long ago the drinking and partying is sad.

  14. Betti says:

My sympathies go to his family but the story is suspect. Sounds like the assistant had a pool party of her own when her employer was out of town and it got out of control. Am sure drugs and alcohol were involved. And am sure Demi is the one who will get sued by the young man’s family.

  15. stinky says:

…and by all mean, keep partying away for your birthday bash ladies. ugh & gag.

  16. jferber says:

Why don’t these celebrities hire full-time lifeguards for their parties? I remember a young boy (3 or 4) died in the pool at Pamela Andersen’s ex-husband Tommy’s pool a few years ago (sorry, forgot his last name). The family sued and lost because children’s families were asked to bring a caretaker for each child. The boy’s caretaker walked away and the child drowned. I still maintain that if it’s your property and your pool and your party, just hire the damned lifeguard. It’s not rocket science.

  17. stinky says:

GROSS- wow i hadnt heard the outcome of that pamela/Tommy Lee story. I remember that and it was so sad. Little boo was stuck out of sight underneath a big floatie. UGH!
You’d think they’d WANT to pay some sad damages. Weird. I guess everything is ‘just business’ anymore.

  18. Anon says:

Staff = employee I think..Also I am betting there are security cameras that will tell the whole story of what happened and end much speculation.

  19. jferber says:

Just to clarify, Pamela was NOT at Tommy’s house at the time of the drowned tot incident. I think he was throwing a party for his two boys on his own.
