Colin Farrell joined team Ireland at opening of Special Olympic World Games

The opening ceremony of the Special Olympics was held on Saturday in LA. Michelle Obama opened the games and there were performances by Avril Lavigne and Stevie Wonder. Longterm Special Olympics supporter Colin Farrell marched in the opening parade with the Irish athletes. Ireland is one of 165 countries represented at the games, in which over 6,500 athletes will compete over nine days.

Colin had some words of encouragement for the athletes competing as well as those at home, which was really nice. You can see footage of him wishing the athletes luck here, and there’s a cute lead-up where he helps the interviewer fix his hair. Here’s a link to another Special Olympics interview with Colin, where he calls it an honor to be there and speaks glowingly of the athletes.

Colin was on Jimmy Kimmel late last week. He suffered a rude intro when a “random” guy (who works on the Jimmy Kimmel show) came up and sniffed his neck. (What do you suppose Colin smells like? I’m guessing Irish Spring and sex.) He seemed surprised but handled it well. I would assume that the Kimmel people gave him a heads up. Later, he told some cute stories about how he’s so cheap he steals combs from spas. Swag makes him feel icky, though.

I could listen to him speak for hours and luckily I just found another interview where he, ever-so-briefly, reads an excerpt from an upcoming erotic novel. The prose is rather purple, it’s by this Irish conservative talk show host named George Hook, but still it’s Colin Farrell reading slightly sexy stuff. He’s doing a George Hook impression too. You can see that here.

Oh and we’re not doing True Detective recaps anymore! Kaiser is still hate-watching it, but she’s kind of annoyed with the direction the show has taken (note by Kaiser: God, if I have to listen to Vince Vaughn half-ass those terrible lines for one more episode, I’m going to start screaming at my TV). I haven’t watched it this season.

Great post, thanks! When celebrities are involved with something other than themselves.

  2. krtmom says:

    Love him!!!

  3. Lindy79 says:

He did the same when Ireland hosted the Special Olympics in 2003, he walked out with the team in their home country, it was fab. We were the first country outside the US to host and it was such a great vibe.

I love Colin, he’s turned his life around for his kids, how can you fault a guy for that?

    • frisbeejada says:

You can’t I didn’t like him at one point (except for the knicker dropping accent!) but he’s really grown on me and seems to have turned into a decent bloke – just proves it can be done!

    • laura in LA says:

Yes, Colin does seem to have turned his life around, good for him, and seeing this makes me like him even more.

  4. Rae says:

Yay! Love me some Colin Farrell. He is the only reason I am sticking with True Detective.
My 3 year old son has a condition called Prader Willi Syndrome so I love seeing celebrities support people with intellectual disabilities. Farrell’s son’s condition is the sister syndrome to my son’s condition.

    • Original T.C. says:

Thanks for sharing. I know next to nothing about Colin Farrell and had no idea he had a child with a genetic disorder. I love that he is a big supporter of the special Olympics and is using his celebrity to highlight such an important event. Every child is important and should have the ability to compete in athletics. Good for the body, mind and spirit.

      • laura in LA says:

I love that Colin’s such a big proponent of the Special Olympics, but I didn’t know about his son…

    • Joan says:

Bless Colin for his kindness and huge heart. I have always appreciated his openness with regard to his son’s condition. His positive attitude gives me hope for my own disabled child.

      • paranormalgirl says:

There’s so much hope for kids with developmental disabilities. More hope than ever.

  5. Starrywonder says:

Love him and yeah True Detective is horrible! I want to punch Vince Vaughn’s character in the face. He needs a movie or something to redeem him now since I am over seeing him do his fast talking thing all the damn time.

  6. celtlady says:

Love me some Colin Farrell. That is one sexy man with a beautiful heart.

  7. Gretchen says:

Forever Dong. Love him. That is all.

  8. TeresaMaria says:

I am amazed how bad the 2nd season of True Detective is. The only reason I still watch it, is Colin.

    • Kendra says:

Me too. It is so painful this season. While watching last night I kept thinking how the hell are they wrapping this up in 2 more episodes when nothing has happened. The show is 80% shitty dialogue that does nothing to move the story along.

  9. Mia4S says:

Really great! He had issues in his day (and may still) but I’ve only ever heard of him being 100% there for his kids and stepping up big time when it was discovered his oldest was disabled. At heart a good guy.

  10. Becks says:

I love that he supports this cause!
He seems like such a great guy. And I too am watching True Detective and it’s just because of Colin.

  11. JFresh says:

He’s gone up several notches in my eyes!!! Great photos. Best of success to all the athletes.

  12. Huh says:

I love this, I get very emotional about the Special Olympics and those who step up to support those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. It takes a very strong person to do that.

  13. Ferdinand says:

There were some shirtless of him last week after taking a hot yoga class.

  14. Jayna says:

I adore him. That was sweet to see him at the opening of the Special Olympics for Ireland.

  15. Ravensdaughter says:

A “bad boy” I can really get behind. Hooray for Colin!
I still get all tingly when I think about the phone affair he and Elizabeth Taylor had. Tingly both ways…

  16. Sarre says:

Oh my, he is looking quite delicious!
