Tom Hiddleston wears a giant hat in the first look for ‘I Saw the Light’: hot?

TH1

It’s difficult to see why this is such a big deal, but that’s only because the Dragonflies have been all over any and every leak from I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams bio-pic starring Tom Hiddleston. I feel like I’ve already seen a dozen leaked photos from the production and set, but here we go. This is the first official image of Hiddleston as Hank Williams. His eyes look pretty. And he has a face for hats, which surprises me. I think it’s a British thing – most British people can just pull off any kind of hat. It’s in their DNA.

I was really hoping that we would have gotten a trailer by now, but I guess not. I Saw the Light will be out in limited release on November 27, then it goes wider in December, I suppose. So far, it’s not scheduled at any film festivals, although I guess that could change in the weeks to come. Maybe the BFI London Film Festival or something. Many Dragonflies hope that ISTL will be Tommy’s chance for some big acting nominations but the jury’s still out on whether his performance – and the film – are any good at all. We do know that this is where he met his LOVAH Elizabeth Olsen though. So there’s that. Here’s another photo making the rounds (big ups to Bradley Whitford!).

And finally, this has nothing to do with Hank Williams, but it is classic Hiddles. Some nerds made a dance-off Vine for Chris Pratt and Tom Hiddleston. It’s charming. And in a dance-off, I would put money on Lord Dragonfly.

The dance off vine *swoon*. Someone help me!!!

  2. NUTBALLS says:

The hat isn’t particularly hot, but neither was Hank… to me anyway. Tom’s a dead ringer when you put that picture up against the real Hank, though.

Wasn’t there something out on Twitter about the trailer being released Labor Day weekend or am I imagining it?

  3. Lilacflowers says:

Brunch is served. Mark says the separation between meadow combatants and those relaxing on the veranda will be strictly enforced.

My husband looks very gaunt and pasty in that photo. I’ve told him no more brown contacts.

Supposedly big High Rise news today. I’m hoping for a trailer.

Surprised he didn’t tweet for Unity yesterday

  4. Marie says:

A friend who works as a stand-in says he is definitely gay, so I really wonder about this EO biz. I thought better of him than that. Maybe bi?

    • Catherine says:

Is your friend American by any chance?

      • Marie says:

No, British-born Canadian. She worked on one of his films and often dishes great gossip about the actors she works with and around. She said everyone knew but no one treated it like anything much worth discussing and he was also a lovely person, one of the nicest she’s worked with. Just passing along what I heard.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Not that it matters a hoot if he’s gay or bisexual, what is she basing that statement on? His mannerisms? Did he state that he was? Was he “caught” in a situation on set?? I just don’t get where people are coming up with this.

      • jammypants says:

ah a “friend of a friend” who conveniently worked with a famous actor, quite original! And it’s the 21st century. Who cares which way he swings.

    • DT says:

A stand in for what? And he is definately not gay, he has stated numerous times he is straight and has had actual real relationships with women. Why do people keep pushing this gay thing, is it because he is polite, posh and articulate?

      • Lilacflowers says:

I was going to ask that too! A stand/in for every time he is in a sexual situation with a woman? *”excuse me, Gwen, I just going toget my stand in to help you with that.”

      • Crocuta says:

We were discussing this in another thread about another celebrity: fans and “I don’t really care about him, I just know everything about him” people use the gay excuse as a coping mechanism. It’s extremely common and extremely funny.

      • Crocuta says:

On a separate note: I don’t think I’m gonna watch this. Hiddles is a decent actor but Hank Williams really isn’t my cup of tea. So unless it gets amazing reviews, I’ll probably skip it.

I mean, no offence to HW fans, but he wasn’t exactly a good singer. Good songwriter, sure, but not singer. If Hiddleston fails mimicking his singing, it will be awful. If he nails it, it will be awful again. Loose-loose situation.

      • Dara says:

@Crocuta, I feel the same about Hank, I just can’t get used to his voice but his songwriting is amazing considering how short his working life actually was.

I think someone here said that Hank is like Bob Dylan for her – his voice is/was the weakest part of his game – the songs are better performed by someone else. I think that’s where I fall. I have some Hank songs in my iTunes playlist, but they are all sung by other artists. Now that I’ve confessed that, I’m expecting the classic country fans to come at me with pitchforks. In my defense, I love Patsy Cline and her voice but there’s something about Hank’s voice that makes me cringe.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, I’m the one who loves Dylan performed by everyone but Dylan. As for Williams, horrible voice but “I’m so lonesome I could cry” performed by the Cowboy Junkies? Shivers

      • Dara says:

@Lilac – I’ll have check that one out, thanks. Any more to recommend? I’ve been searching for good alternative versions and it’s pretty hit or miss. I must have listened to 20 different “Move it on Over”s or “Hey Good Lookin” trying to find one I liked.

      • NUTBALLS says:

The Trinity Sessions is one of my all-time favorite albums. I discovered them during my ethereal music phase along with 10,000 Maniacs and The Sundays, who recorded my favorite cover of Wild Horses.

My kids request Hank’s music often when we’re in the car, their favorites being “Move it On Over”, “Hey Good Lookin”, “Jambalaya” and “Why Don’t You Love Me”.

        Indoctrination complete.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, I like George Thorougood and the destroyers Move it on Over and CCR for Jambalaya

      • icerose says:

was definitely not gay last time he dropped by mine but if he is i will go bi with him-

      • icerose says:

He actually spent 3 months working on the singing/music with Rodney Crowell one of Country musicians before filming even started and was married to Johnnny Cash’s daughter and got on like a house o fire

    • icerose says:

      does it matter

    • Rosie says:

I think your friend is mistaken for another actor or she is lying, Tom Hiddleston is not gay.

    • Bea says:

I love how everyone is going mental like NOOOOO HE IS MOST DEFFO NOT GAY. Ladies, if one of you has managed to get to the conda, spill, if not, let her speak.

      • Madly says:

Lol, how do you know it is not more fan fiction? If even the crazies at DL think you are straight….

      • Bea says:

Oh I have no doubt that 99.9% of what’s written on this site, or DL for that matter, is fanfic but this playing whack-a-mole with everyone who has something different to say is getting a bit old. This person claims she heard he was gay, so what? It’s not like she claims she heard he snatches babies from hospitals and eats them with brown sauce on the side.

      • Dara says:

@Bea – don’t be ridiculous, there’s no possible way that rumor could be true. A man of Tom’s class and education would know that a lovingly crafted bearnaise is the only sauce suitable for the flesh of an innocent.

I believe there may even be a blurry photograph making the rounds on Tumblr that appears to show him buying the necessary ingredients at his local artisanal grocer. His neighbors know of his dark secret, but agree to keep up the charade in exchange for lifetime passes to the local cinema.

      • Bea says:

@Dara IT’S PR!! PR I TELL YOU!!!!!! He’ll be promoting Crimson Peak soon, obvious PR is obvious….. I bet we will see pictures of him with baskets full of half eaten baby clothes now!!!!!

    • Miss Melissa says:

If true, then guessing he is involved with Luke Windsor, which is why he never gets rid of him.

But then why take JArthy to Bora Bora and not Luke?

      • Madly says:

Because that trip was obviously PR and she was to throw people off the scent of Luke and EO is his beard for movie promotion. (Sarcasm).

He has never “pinged me” and I actually think the player bit is more accurate.

    • masy says:

LOL You must to be kidding me. I know a lot of stories about him from a lot people even his gay-neighbours and they all say he is straight. Obviously your friend isn’t bright or you’re lying.

    • 'P'enny says:

      What rubbish

    • Heather says:

“She worked on one of his films.” Just the one? Which one was that, then?

    • Catherine says:

Marie, your friends gaydar is off. “Everyone knew about it” riiighhht.
Americans (and maybe Canadians too) assume any posh/ well spoken British man is gay. He has had relationships and involvements with women and is known to check and and flirt with women. Have a look at this video where he’s blatantly flirting with the interviewer and tell me you still think hes gay:
The Avengers – Tom Hiddleston Interview: https://youtu.be/gJxmoI_Y2Yk

There’s also gifs off the TDW press panel showing him very obviously checking out (supposed ex) Kat Dennings.

  5. Beth No. 2 says:

I don’t think ISTL is SPC’s #1 priority so I am not sure of its awards chances, but it could still be a solid commercial play. Tom looks good in the pic.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Yeah, they seem to be pushing Miles Ahead more than ISTL after seeing the news that it’s closing NYFF.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

Also the fact that SPC acquired Miles Ahead so late in the game indicates they may not have strong confidence in the movies in their existing slate. And Miles Ahead and ISTL are rather similar movies, both musician biopics, competing in similar categories like Lead Actor and Supporting Actress. SPC also has Son of Saul, though that is likely a Foreign Language Film bet.

Once SPC sets a release date for Miles Ahead, we’d know for sure if they are pitching it as an awards contender.

Does anyone know whether the post-production work for ISTL is finished and the film is ready for viewing? I’m wondering why it hasn’t been announced for any festivals, unless they are still rushing the behind the scenes work like editing and such.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Does it take 8 months to edit a movie?? I don’t know about these things, but that seems a long time for a non-CGI film.

I recall someone providing feedback from the initial test screenings that left me wondering if there was more editing to be done.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

It can vary – some films have multiple test screenings and the filmmakers keep tweaking the product; though such situations are usually not a good sign. I haven’t been keeping up with ISTL news so I’m clueless what the status of the film is.

      • Dara says:

@Beth no. 2, I think post-prod is finished – there were a couple of tweets and Facebook posts in early July from the sound mixing/editing team saying it was done. Is that usually the last step? There was a test screening in Boston that the producer (Ratner) and director attended (also July) and they may be tweaking the final cut of the film based on the feedback from that.

@Nutty, I think the press and bloggers are pushing Miles Ahead, SPC hasn’t said anything (that I’ve seen) since that initial press release. I am curious about the release date for Miles Ahead since that wasn’t announced at the time. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

        @Dara

Thanks – and yep, editing the footage, sound work, colour corrections, etc are part of the post-production process which is the final leg before release and distribution. If there are test screenings they’d usually tweak again based on the nature of the audience feedback.

      • Dara says:

@Nutty – my uneducated guess is that 6-8 months is a minimum schedule for post-production, for any feature film – longer for the big special effects movies. Since ISTL is a period film, I would wager there is a lot more CGI than we might think trying to get the look right – taking things out of location shots, adding other things in. I’d also imagine the score and the sound took a fair amount of time since it’s a story about music.

High Rise wrapped in late August and it wasn’t ready in time for Cannes in May. That’s what, 8-ish months or so?

      • icerose says:

Hank was the original down market hard drinking country boy and kept his home roots even after many other artists went middle of the row-no point in playing him as anything other than himself

    • Lilacflowers says:

Not every film or performance has to be an Oscar contender. Alan Rickman has never been nominated but he still manages to get work

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I agree with you, and I don’t think my original comment suggests anything to the contrary? It was a comment made in the context that ISTL has indeed been in awards conversation. In fact I’ve often said on CB that the Oscars are not a good indicator of quality.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Oh, I know you were just talking general facts with no shade but some act as if not winning an Oscar for this will mark him as a failure and destroy his career. Just putting things in perspective.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I see, and thanks – glad you cleared that up!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Another consideration, despite the contention of some that he is all about PR, Tom really is not available to do a full assault Oscar campaign this season, like Julianne Moore and J.K. Simmons were able to do last year, because he will be working. True, he won’t be too far away to fly in for an occasional event but attending all the screenings and luncheon events to smooze voters won’t be possible. But I also don’t expect him to do the “full Cumberbatch” performance of whining about “I’m not campaigning because I’m too busy working”. Not his style to complain about work.

      • Catherine says:

Lilac, I’m not sure where it’s been said he’s all about pr, but that his pr is very obvious. It is to me anyway (and I know I’m not alone as others have commented on that).

  6. Miss Jupitero says:

I love the cobalt blue tie with that suit. When other people decide what he is wearing, he wears clothing well. As for hats: yes to the first picture, no to the second.

I kind of not feeling ISTL. I am suspecting this might fizzle a bit. Bring me my High Rise.

    • Browniecakes says:

I thought it was a gold tie.

    • koko says:

“When other people decide what he is wearing, he wears clothing well.” +1000

I also agree with @MissJ., not feeling this movie. Still on the fence about seeing it in theater or just waiting. Looking forward to CP and TNM more.

    • icerose says:

bring me both-ISTL intrigues me and USA has a large country music audience-Johnny Cash

  7. Kate says:

He does wear the hat well in the promo picture. I wish we could have a trailer for something. High Rise, ISTL…I don’t care at this point. I’d like to be distracted from the mess that is his current PR situation.

Re: the Vine dance-off, Chris Pratt’s dancing makes me laugh.
Tom’s dancing makes me want to tear his clothes off.

  8. jinni says:

Anyone know the name of the song playing in the vine?

  9. EN says:

I think at this point I know too much about Hiddleston to take him seriously in this role.
I look at the picture and see a British gent in a cowboy hat, and my brain says – this doesn’t compute.

  10. Browniecakes says:

Not hot, but definitely looks like Hank. I wonder how much EO looks like Hank’s first wife.
Actually… I wonder how much EO looks like TOM’s first wife!

  11. j.eyre says:

Hats do look good on him; not as good as I look on him, but a close second.

  12. Katie says:

Hate. Hate the hat. Can’t do it.

  13. Starrywonder says:

    He looks good!

  14. kri says:

And they say rhythm is a dancer!!!!!!!!! Go Tom!

  15. Claire says:

He looks good. I thought he has blue eyes. Still I will not be watching this movie.

    • Dara says:

He wore contact lenses for filming. Freaked me out the first time I saw a photo of him as Hank.

    • koko says:

I didn’t think I would like the brown contacts only because I find his eyes one of his best physical features but I’m kind of diggin ’em.

  16. Jane says:

Really don’t like that photo, it comes off as cheesy…

good news about High Rise at least.

  17. I Choose Me says:

I’m here for the dancing. Dancing Tom gets me all hot and bothered.

    • j.eyre says:

Doesn’t he just? Mind if I join you as we watch on loop?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Colin has arranged for it to show in the screenplay room for us

      • j.eyre says:

Have you convinced Colin to join in? I should think he does a mean two-step.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Can we edit Pratt out of the mix and just watch Tom??

Snake hips on a loop is my kryptonite. Perhaps I should just see myself out before I make everyone uncomfortable.

      • Phoebe says:

I am also guilty of watching the snake hips on a loop for more time than anyone probably should. Some lovely gif makers slowed it down a bit and you can certainly tell that our Tommy is going commando in those sweatpants. The Hiddlesconda…ah hem… rears it’s (not so ugly, I’m guessing) head.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Colin will join in although he likes to tango.

  18. Absolutely says:

I’m way more excited about High Rise than ISTL. I was worried it wasn’t even going to be released for a bit there.

  19. Heather says:

    High Rise yes.
    Dancing Hiddles yes.
    I saw the light no.

Sorry Tom. I wasn’t all that excited for it in the first place, though i know he worked hard on it. Problem is now all I can see is him working hard on EO at the same time. I don’t wanna watch that disaster in real life let alone on a big screen.

Just give me my nude sunbathing 70s style Tom please.

    • Bint says:

OMG @heather…yes to High-Rise for me as well!
I want to see Luke Evans with his junk all hanging out. If BW doesn’t put that in the film I will personally demand my money back.

    • Me & Myself says:

“I don’t wanna watch that disaster in real life let alone on a big screen.” I couldn’t agree more. I’m not interested in watching Tom and EO play husband and wife, so I won’t be watching this movie.

    News about The Night Manager:
    http://www.cairoscene.com/Buzz/BBC-Mini-series-with-Tom-Hiddleston-Hugh-Laurie-to-Be-Filmed-in-Egypt?M=True
“We speak to Egyptian producer Mostafa Faramawy about the British TV series that will be partly shot in Egypt”.

    • Catherine says:

Pre-production? It wrapped in June, and the filming in Egypt is 2nd unit.

      • Dara says:

The crew member they interviewed confirmed in the comments section of the article that it is 2nd unit – none of the actors are/will be in Egypt.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Silly girls, Tom’s not in Egypt; he’s on holiday with Lizzy in Bora Bora.

      • Heather says:

@Nutballs Say it ain’t so! That is Tom & Arthy’s special place!

        😀

      • NUTBALLS says:

You’re right, Heather. Bora Bora’s for breaking up and THEO can’t do that until they’re done promoting.

How ’bout they’re up in Scotland at the family home for Emma’s wedding this Saturday? I’ll give Lizzy the Meet-the-Family trip plus a bonus hike through the Highlands.

  22. Phoebe says:

I think he looks gorgeous in the hat, and cowboy hats DO NOT to it for me normally. Chalk it up to the charm of the Hiddles. I am intrigued about this film, but I think his accent will really throw me, I can’t imagine him not having that gorgeous British accent. Southern accents also DO NOT do it for me. We shall see.

Glad to see that there is daylight for High Rise this year because I can’t WAIT. I listened to Tom read me that audiobook (heavenly and highly recommended) and it was such a freaking weird book, I can’t imagine how they are going to turn it into a cohesive film. The narrative jumped around and the motivations of the characters confused me- but I suppose this may be a reason it took so long to write a decent screenplay that anyone would want to shoot. I’m excited to see what they’ve done.

Wonder if anyone has bothered to look up the definition of the word “foetid.”
    #hysterical
I am officially in love with Mark Gatiss.

    • NUTBALLS says:

      I did. #WordNerd

And I’m gonna use it in a sentence at least 3 times this weekend such as, “Son, your bathroom is foetid, did you forget to flush… AGAIN???”

    • Absolutely says:

Weird. I’ve always spelled it fetid. American/british difference?

      • Dara says:

Must be. It took me a minute to recognize it with that that extra letter – those pesky British and their fancy English. Fetid is how I’ve always seen it spelled.

      • MI6 says:

Yes. Methinks a rather backhanded compliment any way you spell it.

      • TotallyBiased says:

M16–did you read the entire tweet? Mark Gatiss is quite the wordsmith, known for his extensive vocabulary, and ‘fabulously foetid’ certainly can be applied in a complimentary fashion to much of GdT’s horror ouevre.

Stephen King and Joe Hill were equally colourful in their tweets re CP earlier this year (‘f**king terrifying’ and ‘gloriously sick’, for example). IMO, any negativity you perceive is in the eye of the beholder.

    • hermia says:

Mark Gatiss is fantastic. He was also reading part of the Iliad @Almeida on 14th August. Renaissance man, really.

  26. MI6 says:

    @totallybiased;
Yes, I did. He’s also fabulously witty and sarcastic. Hence my ardor.
“Fetid ” (stinking, or having an offensive odor), in any conotation is usually not complimentary in any language no matter how you spin it. Perhaps it’s just British humor.

    • KTE says:

      From Gatiss it’s a compliment – he’s a huge horror fan!

      • Heather says:

“Friday night is horror night!” I do believe he was being nothing but complimentary. If he didn’t like it he wouldn’t have said anything and he wouldn’t have put his rather enthusiastic “Go!” at the end of his tweet either. 😉

      • TotallyBiased says:

THANK YOU! I couldn’t see it as anything but complimentary, either. Clive Barker’s stuff used to get 5 star reviews including words like ‘foetid’ all the time, and IIRC he was delighted.
