Will Tom Hiddleston appear at TIFF to promote the world premiere of ‘High Rise’?

TH high rise

A few weeks back, I noted that despite the belief that Tom Hiddleston was going to wage some major awards-season blitz, his films weren’t being included on any of the late summer/early fall film festival schedules. Considering Crimson Peak is due to be released in October, I thought for sure it would get at least a non-competitive screening/premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. We still haven’t heard anything about CP, but it seems like we will be getting some Hiddles (hopefully) at TIFF… but for High Rise, which still doesn’t have a British or American release date. The header photo is apparently the second released photo from High Rise – Hiddles plays a creepy architect doctor (?) in a series of fabulous suits, I believe.

The highly anticipated adaptation of JG Ballard’s dystopian novel High-Rise, directed by Ben Wheatley, is set to receive its world premiere at this year’s Toronto film festival. The film, set in the 1970s, stars Tom Hiddleston as a doctor who moves into a luxurious yet isolated tower block, only to find the building is beset by a dangerous class divide that threatens to break out into violence. Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons and Elisabeth Moss also star. The 2015 Toronto film festival runs 10-20 September.

[From The Guardian]

I do hope we get some Hiddles in Toronto. I also hope he’ll be making appearances at other film festivals too – it’s probably too late for Venice and Telluride, but maybe BFI London and NYFF.

As for I Saw the Light… it’s still got a limited release in November and no scheduled stops at any film festivals so far. They did release some additional photos to go along with the hat photo though. I like the pic of Hiddles at the microphone. The one with Elizabeth Olsen (who plays his wife) is interesting.

It says he plays a doctor in the synopsis you posted.

  2. Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

    swoon…

    • Lilacflowers says:

Colin is fetching the smelling salts for you. Please make yourself comfortable on the lounge on the veranda.

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Thanks Lilac.. feeling slightly better now… It must be the heat, I mean, it’s summer time, right?

        *lying to myself*

      • Lilacflowers says:

It’s a combination of a great many things. Here, have some raspberry lemonade and put your feet up while Colin finds someone to fan you. The lemonade is made with raspberry vodka so you won’t want to get up too fast.

    • Waitwhat says:

I’ve been swooning since I first saw that top picture a few months back. Especially with the undone shirt button.

I should hope he’ll be at the World Premiere of a movie he’s the star of. I’ll try not to kidnap him when he’s in town.

  3. Lilacflowers says:

My husband Tom plays a doctor in High Rise. Jeremy Irons plays the architect. HIgh Rise is also scheduled for the Zurich and San Sebastian film festivals. TIFF is before Tom needs to head off for the monkey movie so, yes, he should be at TIFF. I’ll be there too – in disguise, of course. High Rise does not have a US distributor yet.

Colin has set up the buffet on the veranda and the free vending machines down in the meadow. It promises to be a very hot day down in the meadow so please use the sun block provided and be sure to hydrate.

  4. kri says:

I don’t know if I will see Highrise, but between this, Crimson Peak, my first vacation in 4 years(during Halloween, of course!) and X-files, I am looking forward to this fall. CP will be fab, I hope.

  5. whatsup says:

High rise is really a disturbing book. But it’s super scary how it could happen and now when I look at tall blocks I just imagine what could happen inside!

Be ready for rape, killing and dog eating!

  6. NUTBALLS says:

    Finally, a new header picture!!

High Rise is too dark and disturbing for my taste, but I am hoping we’ll see Tom clad in a tight, buttoned-down shirt and form-fitting slacks, strutting his stuff down the red carpet, talking earnestly about his work. I’m giggling like a schoolgirl in anticipation.

That picture of him performing as Hank is lovely to behold. I can’t see THEO without thinking of that ridiculous pap walk, however. The PR for this romance is already overshadowing their work. *heavy sigh*

We need a trailer for ISTL… soon. I’m getting impatient.

    • Absolutely says:

Mmmmm…I love dark stuff. So excited for this and Crimson Peak. I just can’t with the Joanna Hogg stuff.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I really liked Unrelated and Archipelago, but I don’t mind movies that are a slow burn. I actually enjoy them more than shoot-em-up, action-packed superhero movies now that I’m older.

      • Absolutely says:

I don’t mind a slow burn either, I just thought the directing (especially the completely static shots) was atrocious.

      • icerose says:

I thoouth the book was brilliant but i am a huge Wheatley fan.Tom is in live Coriolanus brodcastcatis

      • icerose says:

i just rewatched Archipelego with my daughter and at one point she told me to turn the video on but it the was not off-just very very slow -we could not stop laughing -buy i still like it

      • NUTBALLS says:

Absolutely, I liked the still shots, particularly in Archipelago… Tresco’s the kind of place I like to hang out and trail run. It helped save the movie when I realized that it wasn’t going to have a forward moving plot. More like peeling the layers of an onion to see more dysfunction.

      • Anne tommy says:

I really ought to charge Joanna Hogg a fee for PR as I say again, I enjoyed all her films and don’t find them boring at all.

      • Lilacflowers says:

My favorite Joanna Hogg film is Caprice, which was her film school production or something (it’s on the DVD for Exhibition) and it stars somebody named “Matilda Swinton.”

      • Absolutely says:

It just makes me crazy when people don’t make use of the medium they’re working in. If you’re just going to do static shots then do theatre! Why are you wasting video on that?

    • Grace says:

Oh yes! A very yummy new header picture!

    • jammypants says:

“The PR for this romance is already overshadowing their work. *heavy sigh*” only to some of his fans. I’m a fan, but I don’t care a hoot and just want to see him on the silver screen, honestly.

“We need a trailer for ISTL… soon.”

      Labor Day!

      • Leah says:

I’m not sure how the PR for the romance is overshadowing the movie, either.

      • Catherine says:

It’s put me off the film too I’m afraid.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Do come sit with me on the veranda’s glider, Jammypants and Leah

      • Heather says:

There aren’t many articles talking about ISTL without sneaking in a line about “rumoured gf” or “new love interest” which just makes me roll my eyes…

If that’s the angle they’re playing they best be remembering how real life Hank & Audrey ended up. Yikes.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Jammy, I aspire to your higher plane of consciousness to be able to watch the movie without the “romance” in the backdrop. Yea for Labor Day!

Heather, I’m nervous as to what we’ll be seeing from these two publicly in the coming months. At first I was neutral on THEO, but the more I think about it, the weirder this pairing is to me.

And after giving Lizzy at least 8 opportunities this weekend to show me she has an interesting personality, I had to give up. She’s bland as unbuttered toast. I hope Tom does most of the talking… at least he entertains me, even if unintentionally.

      • et alors says:

ISTL will be the easiest of his three films for me to watch. I’m looking forward to seeing Rodney Crowell as Hank Williams’ father and Cherry Jones back on the big screen. Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies, but CP sounds like it’s going to be even gorier. I can deal with fantastical horror better than realistic scenes of violence, though, which is why I’m not sure I can watch High-Rise.

      • jammypants says:

@Lilac, I love to. Please ask Colin to bring the tea!

@Heather, none of the trade articles (Deadline, VF, Variety) mention the romance. Only bloggy/gossip trades.

@Nutballs, it only works if there’s not a care about it. I promise 😀 you also have High Rise and Crimson Peak to enjoy, don’t forget 😉

      • icerose says:

me to-i am a big Emmylou Harris aand Rodney fan

      • Madly says:

@nuts, not to beat a dead horse, but why are you starting to think this is a weird pairing?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Entertainment Weekly didn’t mention it either in their recent fall movie preview issue, in which they quote the director in describing Tom as “insanely talented”

      • TotallyBiased says:

I did a rather thorough search through the last week or so (since release of the official pics) and only tripped over ONE reference ( a slyly parenthetical ‘(and rumoured girlfriend)’ on Hollywood Lite)–of course, I wasn’t looking at Lainey/Celebitchy et al because gossip is the whole point of these sites.
All the actual trade sites–even the ‘lite entertainment’ locales like E!Online–have resisted referring to the relationship in articles specifically about the movie, even when they couldn’t resist cute little Loki trades horns for ten-gallon hat jokes.
Surprisingly, the comments sections I read weren’t full of discourse re THEO, either. A few snarky comments, a few snarky responses–that was pretty much it. A lot less ‘shoulda been played by a ‘Murrican!/Hank III/McBongo’ comments than previously as well, even on the country sites. The pictures and Rodney Crowell’s great support seem to be slowly having effect. I’m sure Tom’s comments in the Baz Bamigboye interview:
‘Hiddleston adds: ‘Hank’s life has a tragic arc, but in simple truth, he was a genius: a star that burned twice as bright and lived half as long. It’s a huge role for me and a huge responsibility. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.’
have also had some effect–I saw him quoted in several articles, too.

      • Dara says:

@nutty – I’ve given up on EO winning me over with her sparkling personality, it’s just not going to happen. btw, she was spotted back in LA over the weekend.

I’m just hoping the ‘romance’ nonsense doesn’t overshadow the film and the industry press focuses on what’s onscreen and not what may have been going on offscreen.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Dara, perhaps overshadowed is too strong of a word. The hookup chatter has definitely colored my impressions of them, which I hope won’t affect how I view ISTL.

It didn’t help that I watched a couple of videos of Susannah and Gwendoline being interviewed. Gwen was Gwen being awesome and Susannah struck me as full of personality, smart and a lot of fun. Lizzy, poor girl, can’t compete with either of them.

TotallyBiased, I was glad to see that the ISTL still releases didn’t come with the romance bits and just listed his costars.

Madly, the weirdness is being separated by the Atlantic Ocean, her being an Olsen (and having the publicity baggage that comes with that) and her being 8 years younger, acting less mature and lacking his level of intelligence and cultural understanding.

My impressions could be wrong, but I don’t see these two as a couple. I could see the possibility of them having an on-set fling, but I have doubts that Tom would want us to think they’re a couple by doing the Wolseley pap walk if it wasn’t for ISTL’s Oscar buzz.

      • masy says:

For me, it’s overshadowing their work. This is a weird pairing. She’s not his equal and never will be. She is shallow and has the dim personality. Not mention he’s far more educated talented and smart.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, do you need a refill on that tea?

Entertainment Weekly’s online edition has expanded on the ISTL blurb that appears in this week’s print edition with Abraham’s explanation as to why he wanted Tom for the part – and still no mention of them as a couple.

        http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/17/tom-hiddleston-channels-hank-williams-i-saw-light

And my boyfriend is looking forward to this because: Rodney Crowell did a movie and Cherry Jones and Bradley Whitford are in it!

      • Lilacflowers says:

And Collider has picked up on the Entertainment Weekly story and again, no reference to any romance. http://collider.com/i-saw-the-light-image-tom-hiddleston-elizabeth-olsen-duet/

      • NUTBALLS says:

Lilac, I would like to think that when this film is being promoted they will focus on the making of the film, Hank/Audrey’s marriage, etc, not any off-screen romance. The trade articles are for the most part, not mentioning it from what I’ve seen. But that could all change once interviews are published and red carpet interviews are in full swing. I wait in trepid anticipation…

      • MI6 says:

        @nutballs
        …or is that “foetid” anticipation?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Red carpet interviews rarely last more than 1-2 minutes, most of which are consumed with “who are you wearing.” SDCC red carpet interviewers were allowed ONE question. Tom has pretty much made it clear that he will not discuss relationship details in interviews and his PR people have stated that they do not cover his private life, only his work. I find people make way too much about PR, as this recent outing to the theater and dinner between two co-workers (and that is all anyone knows) has demonstrated. Multiple articles in tabloids that all say pretty much the same thing, one copying the other with absolutely nothing original to add or attributable to an actual human being and people running around wailing that the PR is all too much to take when there really has been nothing more than some pap shots of two co-workers getting a cab and, as I stated above, tabloids regurgitating the same nothingness with embellishments. While others pass value judgment on rumors and those tabloid stories and get overly excited. Calming down is so much more enjoyable.

And I’m rambling. Back to the veranda for me. Colin, one of those raspberry vodka lemonades, please?

      • Me & Myself says:

“there really has been nothing more than some pap shots of two co-workers getting a cab”- Lilacflowers

Two co-workers? Lol, denial ain’t just a river in Egypt…

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MeMyself&I oh, do please enlighten me as to what I am in denial about? And do help yourself to the snacks in the meadow vending machines

Firstly, it doesn’t matter to me whether an actor, any actor, whom I will never meet, is straight, gay, married, single, dating, whatever. So long as whatever involves two consenting adults.

Secondly, in my life, solid proof is required before something is believable and things like Star, People, U.S. Weekly, aren’t considered viable, reputable sources. Unless you really believe Hillary Clinton adopted an alien?

Third, oh wait, I’m overlooking the rule that men and women would never go to the theater or dinner or stay at one another’s place unless there was something sexual. Actually, I’m not because I have done all those things with male friends and I feel really sorry for people who have such narrow views because they deprive themselves of so much.

Now, do you have any actual proof that they’re anything more than co-workers who went to the theater and dinner? If yes, please share so we can wish the happy couple well?

      • Heather says:

The trade articles might be swinging it back around to focusing on the film itself instead of whatever shenanigans their lead actors might be getting up to – as well they should – but for me, personally, I can’t see the two of them without seeing THOSE pap shots and all the gossip articles that followed.

Perhaps it’s my own fault for reading them and seeing the sillies on Twitter with the Hank/Audrey photo that was just released: “Oh look at how he’s looking at her..!” Yes look at the look. In my head, all I am thinking is that must have been when she decided to ditch the fiance and jump the Hiddles train, right? SEE. I can’t help it. *throws hands up*

@Nutballs I am slightly dreading the promotion, it could be awkward. I only hope they are interviewed separately and keep the gushing to a minimum. Time will tell…

      • jammypants says:

@Lilac, yess a refill would be nice.

Also, I do think the chatter on the dating thing is super tame compared to the full blown Cumberbatch crazy. I do think the diss on Olsen is quite unnecessary though.

I’ll further back up Lilac’s point.

Fact: They ARE coworkers and they definitely went out to dinner together.

Not yet proven or confirmed: They’re dating.

        I don’t know. I think they’re cute. Why not.

      • Me & Myself says:

“Now, do you have any actual proof that they’re anything more than co-workers who went to the theater and dinner? If yes, please share so we can wish the happy couple well?”- Lilacflowers

You need a sex tape to finally admit that he’s banging her? I guess in your mind Tommy can’t be a homewrecker. I’ll keep watching his movies because he’s good looking and talented, it’s not my problem if Tom’s a homewrecker. The fact that he isn’t perfect doesn’t bother me, I don’t need to be in denial like you.

      • TotallyBiased says:

What is the exact opposite of a Nanny, anyway?
I can’t figure out why folks need him to be EITHER Perfect Tommy OR a homewrecker.
He has to be painted in black or white (and somehow this painting is usually done by people who would shade him with a sharpie); he’s never allowed to be a typical human with a full spectrum personality.
Maybe THEO dating is a thing, maybe not. The street shots are just that: pics on the street. If that constitutes proof to you, I have a nice precis here regarding a bridge I’d like to sell you. It has pretty pictures ‘n’ everything.
And IF it’s a thing, maybe it started—we have no idea when. Hey, what if he was actually banging her way back when they were FIRST photographed together, back in 2011. Do I think so? Eh, probably not–but there is no more nor no LESS evidence.
This isn’t denial, this is intellectual rigor applied to daily cognition.

      • Lilacflowers says:

“You need a sex tape to finally admit that he’s banging her? I guess in your mind Tommy can’t be a homewrecker. The fact that he isn’t perfect doesn’t bother me, I don’t need to be in denial like you. ”

What part of “it doesn’t matter to me …” do you not comprehend? Of course, you are entitled to your own fantasies but you have no clue what is happening in my mind so please leave me out of your fantasies, speculations, judgments, and accusations. Now, let’s try this again slowly for you. I. Do. Not. Care. If. They. Are. Together. Or. Not. But. Unlike. You. I. Don’t. Rush. To. Conclusions. Or. Make. Value. Judgments. Without. Valid. Proof. Like. One. Of. Them. Saying. Something.

I’m going to lunch with a married male co-worker today. I guess I’m a homewrecker.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@TotallyBiased, logic need not apply apparently. Anytime we see a picture of a man and woman together, we must believe there is something sexual and sordid happening, don’t you know? Colin needs to refill our beverages again. I do notice we aren’t the ones claiming we’re not going to see a movie because the co-stars might have a sexual relationship.

      • Catherine says:

Ladies please. Comments like these are putting me off coming to these threads.

      • jammypants says:

@TotallyBiased: “What is the exact opposite of a Nanny, anyway?
I can’t figure out why folks need him to be EITHER Perfect Tommy OR a homewrecker.”

        A negative nancy! 😛

      • NUTBALLS says:

Let’s agree to disagree, shall we? No one is going to change anyone else’s perceptions of the THEO situation here. Some of us start from a presupposition that Tom is very conscious of his image and that PR colors his behavior when out in public. Others will not accept that THEO is anything but friends until a statement or some other irrefutable evidence is presented. To each his own opinion; it’s not worth fighting about since neither side knows what’s going on — it’s all just speculation.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Nutballs–will try to let go BUT my real issue is how it always gets reduced to ‘either or’/sides.
Because it isn’t a matter of sides, it’s a matter (for some) of not choosing to make any definitive statements about people when we aren’t privy to their lives and (even more importantly to me) not feeling being privy to their lives has any bearing on their work.
And it’s offensive to be told one is in denial simply for refusing to be pushed into letting someone define grey areas as black and white.

      • jammypants says:

@TB, I imagine it’s even MORE awkward, say if there is something going, like FWB, to confirm to the public, “Yes we are screwing each other senseless.” That is way too much entitlement to be privy to and way too much information to give out to the public. I doubt they are even hiding. It’s probably a trial period for them all we know. Why define the “relationship” if they are currently unsure themselves you know? Grey area is every aspect of life.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@nutballs, dear friend, and some of us really do not care one way or the other but really do not appreciate when somebody affixes labels to them, especially when the labels are wrong or insulting. Some perspective, the same person has hurled that denial thing at me at least three times in the past month simply for pointing out facts. Now, do enjoy that lovely cold beverage Mark is offering you. And the freshly baked cookies.

@TB my thoughts exactly and you state them so well. Colin just made a lovely peach pie, would you like some?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, your excellent reply hadn’t appeared when I posted my response to TB and Nutballs, but yes to everything you are saying.

    • EscapedConvent says:

I’m really looking forward to I Saw The Light, too. Even though I don’t listen to Hank Williams, I am intrigued by Tommy’s transformation. The fact that he had to sing, play guitar and learn to speak like Hank makes this an unusually demanding role.

      • Eve says:

        :* (for no reason).

      • NUTBALLS says:

        Hi Eve!!

*jumps up and down, waving frantically*

I was reading comments on an old thread and missing you, EsCon and the rest of the Thornfield ladies here. Maybe when Tom starts TAWKING again there will be a reunion of sorts??

      • Eve says:

        @ Nutballs:

Maybe? It’ll all depend on my “companion”, remember?

By the way, you get a peck on the cheek, too.

        :*

      • Lilacflowers says:

@EscapedConvent, I am looking forward to it as well for those same reasons. He definitely has professional courage to attempt it. And I admire the way he has handled the detractors by ignoring them.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Eve, when you get a chance, please send your companion over to me so I give them a roundhouse kick to the face.

        *smooch*

    • brownicakes says:

Lizzie is already back in LA with boring shoes. Didn’t Emma Hiddleston get married this past weekend? Not so inseparable after all. Pap photos may be forgotten by Nov. if nothing new comes to light, to make a pun, with THEO.
I have to say, and this is embarrassing, but I think I am with my sister wives in a safe space – I liked the Twilight movies better because Rob and Kristen were a real couple. The look Tom as Hank is giving Lizzie as Audrey is pretty intense. I can enjoy a movie more if there is real stuff behind it.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Did Emma get married?? I made a joke about it on the last thread, but I hadn’t heard that. I saw on Twitter that Tom was spotted alone in his neighborhood, that’s all.

I think if I thought they were a believable couple, I’d enjoy the movie more too. But as you can see, I have a few hangups and I OWN THEM COMPLETELY.

      • DT says:

Someone said she got married in May, wasn’t lizzie around then? Or maybe the marriage was when he was spotted in Oxford with EO……

      • Lilacflowers says:

Wasn’t he in Morocco in May? Unlikely that his sister would schedule her wedding for a time her brother wouldn’t be around. Even if he could get some time off, there’s usually more stuff involved in a family wedding than just a weekend would allow.

      • Heather says:

“Lizzie is already back in LA with boring shoes.”

        Oh good.

Tom was spotted in Soho today. I wonder if he was wearing his glasses..

      • A.Key says:

“I can enjoy a movie more if there is real stuff behind it.”

Ha, interestingly I am the complete opposite. Whenever I find out that the co-stars are dating in real life, their on-screen chemistry loses its spark to me. Like the reality of the actor and his life creeping into the film or TV show somehow ruins the magic and suspension of disbelief for me.
In all honesty, the less you know about the actor the more you’re able to immerse yourself in his/her performance, and only see the character (as it should be).
That’s the problem of super stardom to me – I always see Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, I never see the characters they are playing.

  7. TotallyBiased says:

Keep hearing rumours that Legendary/Universal specifically didn’t want CP on the festival circuit, which seems kind of odd. GdT will be at TIFF with a series of ‘Gothic Master Classes.’ Huh.

Telluride doesn’t announce their lineup until the festival, so it isn’t too late for IStL to show up there.

I just don’t know–it all seems a bit overwhelming, I want these films in a theatre where I can watch them NOW.

    That is all.
Oh, except I wanted to observe what LOVELY pictures you’ve selected for Dragonfly viewing pleasure, Kaiser.
    Bless you!

  8. Tangiers Eve says:

Squee! I am volunteering at TIFF again this year. Mind you, last year the sole and only ‘celeb’ I was within 20 yards of was Ivan Reitman. And perhaps hundreds of up-and-coming producer/directors whom I didn’t recognize at Industry at the Hyatt. Missed the only day a celeb showed up: Channing Tatum, who came to collect his own pass himself, happy as a young clam to be at his first big film festival (“Foxcatcher”).

    • NUTBALLS says:

You and all the rest of the D’flies going to TIFF had better bring back some good stories for us shmucks who can’t go!

Telluride is in my neck of the woods, perhaps I should see if they need help???

    • A.Key says:

Man I love Tatum, there’s never a bad word about him from any source anywhere. The guy’s just awesome!

  9. Lilacflowers says:

Since we’re on Tom, in sort of Loki related news, Chris Hemsworth is filming Ghostbusters here, he is injured, and yes, I saw him outside his hotel. Stunning!

    • Absolutely says:

Wait, I’m confused, what happened to the female ghostbusters? Who is in the one that’s shooting?

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Which Hotel? I heard they are filming in Weymouth.

      • Lilacflowers says:

They’re filming all over. They built a fake NY subway entrance in Chinatown. 4 Seasons. He was standing right in the car entry when I walked by

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Ahhh, right by the Common! Nice location. The Thinking Cup is right down the street. Maybe I will run into him.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And he hung out at Alibi for drinks with a bunch of guys and went pedal boating on the Charles with Elsa and India and has acquired a Red Sox hat, which he seems to be wearing everywhere now.

  10. Eira says:

High Rise will be shown at the Zürich Film Festival and I hope he’ll come along there 😀

  11. Grace says:

I’ve been away for a couple months. So a bit slow on Tommy-related news. I need to ask: is there a trailer for High Rise yet?

/wave to all lovely ladies on Tommy threads.

    • jammypants says:

not yet but it’s coming out soon, along with IStL

      • Grace says:

Man. That’s some wait. They’ve been baiting us with the trailer for how long…. ?

      • jammypants says:

I believe the ISTL trailer comes out Labor Day-ish. I read on Twitter recently, we should expect more promo for HR very soon, come September.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Grace are you the former Gracie?? *waves back*

      • Grace says:

Yeeeessss! I was initially Grace but when the name stopped working at one point I changed to Gracie – now after a few months I completely forgot about that until you mentioned it. Maybe I keep my name as Gracie for Tommy threads. *fist bump*

  12. Heather says:

I think he will be at TIFF, I can’t imagine he would skip it considering its the world premiere of High Rise. It is the one project he has not mentioned (outside of twitter) at all, which i found interesting. He even mentioned Kong back in Feb when interviewed at the Baftas, but High Rise? Nada. we know how much he loves to talk about his work, poor baby must be dying to talk about it!

    • Lilacflowers says:

He did autograph a slide of Lego Loki’s Brick High Rise

    • et alors says:

Ben Wheatley was one of the lucky ones who saw Crimson Peak recently, probably at the same screening as Mark Gatiss.

      https://twitter.com/mr_wheatley/status/632580556031676416

      • Lilacflowers says:

Did he attend the same screening as Gatiss? Tom must have held a viewing party

      • et alors says:

I’m not sure, but since they tweeted about the movie within a day of each other, that was my assumption.

      • Phoebe says:

I saw those tweets and had an adorable vision of Tom having his friends over to watch a screener of the movie with cheese and crackers and CP themed cocktails (Crimson Mary’s?) in mismatched glasses.

      • jammypants says:

so he’s not shy about his friends seeing him naked :p

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, given the track record of Unrelated, Archipelago (we’ll just have our male lead change into his pajamas for no particular reason), The Deep Blue Sea (let’s just film this love scene so that the camera is focused very closely on his butt, shall we?) and OLLA, he’s not shy about being naked in front of anyone.

      • NUTBALLS says:

…he’s not shy about being naked in front of anyone.

One of his most endearing qualities, I might add.

      • Dara says:

If we’re compiling a list of ‘naked or nearly so’ moments, we can’t forget the very thin gown of humility in Coriolanus.

  13. Sarah says:

Was just listening to the Nerdist podcast with Tom and CP director, and they said there will definitely be some Hiddleston butt shots in CP😳

    • Lilacflowers says:

There’s a butt shot in the trailer

      • NUTBALLS says:

Tumblr’s been giffing the hell outta that but shot.

      • Ankhel says:

Was there ever a butt shot in the trailer… Still, it’s amazing what this guy can do with just one button undone, or his sleeves rolled up. So, so hot. *Sighs*

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I think CP is going to be the big winner here.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, a ghost story at Halloween is the more mainstream of the three, isn’t it? And it has the widest release planned. High-Rise doesn’t have a distribution deal outside parts of Europe and ISTL has a limited distribution, similar to what they did with Still Alice

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Still Alice did well critically at least. Maybe ISTL will do the same.

      • et alors says:

EW, along with other outlets, reports that ISTL is opening in limited release on November 27 but going nationwide after that. That’s better than what Still Alice had, isn’t it?

      • seesittellsit says:

Probably turn into a cult fave, like Only Lovers Left Alive. I’m looking forward to all 3 films, kidding aside about Toddlelove, because I’m genuinely curious to see how much talent he’s got. And lawd knows we could all use a break from the Hammer of the CumberHamlet . . .

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, et alors, that’s more like last year’s release of TTOE

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Seesit, I had been enjoying a break from that until it was raised here

      • et alors says:

I think ISTL is going to have much broader appeal than OLLA, which I loved. I’ve been perusing comments on country music-related Facebook pages, and other than a few dissenters, the response after the release of the first official picture has been mostly positive. Surprisingly, there are a lot of men who are vocal about their interest in the movie.

      • TotallyBiased says:

et alors–I’m glad to see your comment about the men expressing interest, because I rather thought that was a thing but wasn’t totally certain.

      • NUTBALLS says:

et alors, I agree. I noticed that men were commenting on ISTL articles as well… this is going to interest not only country music lovers, but those over the age of 60 that actually remember listening to Hank on the radio. My parents will watch this movie as well as Night Manager, which will be their first exposure to him.

It was a ballsy thing for him to take this on and I do hope it pays off in showcasing his talents and reaping more good parts in the future.

    • seesittellsit says:

Oh you can already see the slo-mo footage of that scene on Tea with Sabrina and Violet . . .

  14. Madly says:

Maybe I am too much of a prude, but I am not sure how I can handle High Rise.

    • Grace says:

……. I’ve been meaning to read the book but never got around to it. Is it really that provocative?

      • NUTBALLS says:

Grace, you can sign up for Audible and listen to Tom read it during their free 30-day trial membership.

I though Ballard was a fantastic writer. I just don’t like stories without any redemption or where characters fail to learn from their mistakes, so that’s my main reason for not being jazzed about it. It left me feeling really depressed, but as you can see, that’s not necessarily a common issue among the gang here.

I like those still pictures though… MOAR DR LAING!

      • Phoebe says:

I agree @Nutballs- I had Tom read me the book and I think if he wasn’t reading it, I wouldn’t have made it through. It’s very dark and hard to really believe the character’s motivations. But, I’m glad he did read it to me, because now I am very intrigued as to how they will turn it into a cohesive film. Plus at this point I’d watch him in just about anything 😉

My favorite part of listening to the book is that I didn’t know the Brits pronounced debris as DEB-ree. It’s adorable.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes. Residents of the apartment complex are pitted against one another by floors with gang warfare between middle class adults ensuing. Gang beatings, rapes, murders, incest, hints of cannibalism. Pets aren’t safe either. Luke Evans’s character spends a quarter of the book with his genitals exposed and his face and torso smeared with blood and wine

      • jammypants says:

In a recent interview, Laing, Tom’s character, dissects a head, so…not for the squeamish I’m afraid.

      • NUTBALLS says:

If they’d just splice the nudity and sex scenes, I’d watch it. 🙂

      • jammypants says:

@nutballs, give in. Succumb to the temptation 😜

      • NUTBALLS says:

Jammy, I’m gonna try and stay strong and not give in to peer pressure from all you Dragonflies who revel in that sort of thing.

*whispers* But, I confess that if there are more stills released like the ones above, I may be powerless to resist.

      • Grace says:

Thank you all so much, lovely ladies.

The book is a strange one for me. I had it on Kindle since May but for some reason never been able to read past page ten. It’s not uninteresting or anything. The premise is intriguing but the writing just doesn’t draw me in – I guess that’s a matter of preference. Ballard is a little too ‘to the point’ for my liking. Reading his text feels like there is no room to breathe. Every single line seems significant somehow and soon enough none of them seems significant…

… until tonight. I listened to the audio and read the text at the same time. Currently on page twenty-seven and counting! 🙂 I will report back how I get on.

Completely off topic. I went to see the play 1984 sometime ago and was okay after seeing the main character being tortured on stage *spoiler alert*. Well, not okay okay, but I wasn’t scared or looking away. The moral reprehension behind was far more thoughts provoking to me than the physical violence.

I guess we will see. What I gathered from you all is, this book is basically about a bunch of people in a confined, agitating environment devolving into/becoming the most depraved form of themselves without the author showing conscience, correct?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Grace, I highly recommend Lego Loki’s “Brick High Rise”, http://brickhighrise.co.uk/ , which gives a fantastic and hilarious overview of the entire novel. Lego Loki explains that the challenge to do it came from the High-Rise staff and many of them have commented about it and re-tweeted about it. Tom signed a slide.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Grace, I assume you’re listening to Tom’s narration, right?? The velvety voice helps to make the depravity go down a little easier, methinks.

  15. et alors says:

From someone on ONTD who went to the Boston screening of ISTL:

The screening was to get feedback from the audience about how the movie is as it is and if there were things that could be edited to make the story clearer. A lot of people had an issue with the length of the movie and there were many scenes that did not bring anything to the story. Elizabeth and Tom were really good. They were really believable. Tom is a a really good singer. Brett Ratner (the producer) was being such a douchebag during the q&a. He didn’t take negative feedback very well

    • Miss Jupitero says:

There was a screening in Boston??

      • et alors says:

Yes, but apparently, the invitations were untitled, so no one knew in advance that it was an ISTL screening. The Boston Herald had a little blurb about it:

That the audience at a test screening of the Hank Williams biopic “I Saw The Light” wasn’t exactly cracking up at some of producer Brett Ratner’s jokes. During a discussion about the film to gather audience feedback, the Hollywood heavy responded to one young lady who thought some editing might help move the story along with a quip to the effect, “You’re really smart. Do you go to Harvard?” To another rather attractive audience member, he quipped, “Just so you know, I’m staying at the Four Seasons.” But Ratner did allow that he chose to do the test screen at the Kendall Square theater because “Boston audiences are smart.” Well, that’s no joke!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Miss J, puzzles me as well. And I do hope they show it somewhere other than the Kendall. I hate driving in Cambridge and that place is a hike from the T

    • NUTBALLS says:

Yes, at the Kendall Square, I believe. This is the first feedback I’d seen from it though.

      • et alors says:

This has been the only screening that we know of, so the feedback we’ve discussed in previous posts has come from this.

      • TotallyBiased says:

So I’ve seen the opinions of exactly TWO people who were at that screener, when all is said and done. In fact, considering how few public statements there are from people who were present (and we know at least one member of the press was there), I rather wonder if the screener audience wasn’t constrained to not discuss specifics regarding the film. This seems especially likely if they were trying one specific edit that they were expecting to have to change.

ANYWAY—One raved (though said it had problems) and specifically cited EO and Tom as doing a great job.

The other one (see reference to Letterboxd review below) felt THEO were ‘going through the motions.’ That’s a huge difference in reactions. Admittedly, the Letterboxd reviewer didn’t seem like they were really into the subject matter from the get go. (I understand this screening was a blind–people who showed up had no idea what they were going to see until they sat down.)

TBH, the description of scenes set in Hank’s life interleaved with interviews (if that is an accurate description, because we’ve only the one review that mentions it) isn’t a style I tend to enjoy myself. Perhaps it was an experiment? Hopefully–if so–it’s one they’ve dumped by the wayside!

      • et alors says:

TotallyBiased, there have actually been opinions from four people: 1) the one that was tweeted by @michaelnotcera, which you referenced; 2) a commenter on a Rolling Stone article about ISTL (he didn’t like the film because he wanted more of a focus on Wiliams’ career, IIRC); 3) the ONTD commenter; and 4) the letterboxd reviewer. So far, it’s 50/50.

    • Kay says:

The odd scenes may have been random interviews sprinkled throughout with music executives and the like, they don’t connect properly. I saw screener feedback on Letterboxd that mentioned them.

It’s not a good review though, they felt the movie and the acting fell flat.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Where did you see rhis? Link?

I am really dismayed by the directors behavior. How unprofessional!

        This doesn’t bode well.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Never mind– I found it. Thoughtful careful review, and all I can say is that I hope they are able to edit it and improve it before release.

      • masy says:

If the movie is that bad why did SonyClassic choose it?

      • Lilacflowers says:

The person, who is not a professional reviewer, also begins by stating she is tired of biopics and finds them formulaic and flat so it just may not have been her thing at all but she does make some good points.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

And it is just one review based upon a pre-screening, the whole point of which is to give the director feedback so that it can be improved.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And the reviewer may have been in the same mood I’m in after seeing something at the Kendall: “oh that involved another sad story about a person dying young and now I have to hike 3/4 of a mile back to the T through one of the most boring urban landscapes on the planet and, of course, it is raining

      • et alors says:

Miss Jupitero, it was Brett Ratner, renowned douchebag and ISTL’s producer, who was unprofessional, not Marc Abraham, the director.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Ahhh sorry, about that! And yeah, what a douchebag.

    • Heather says:

Well that’s good news for the film.

      *bracing self*

Just remember the work. Its all about the work.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Well, that’s wonderful but now I have to get a second dress for TIFF and a second disguise so you won’t notice me accompanying my husband Tom.

*Colin, please get the stylist on the phone!*

    • Dara says:

So if it’s listed as a World Premiere at TIFF, does that mean it won’t show at Telluride? If so, that’s a bit of a surprise actually. Neither good nor bad really, just not what I was expecting.

      • et alors says:

Since the WP is at TIFF, which takes place after Telluride, I’m pretty sure that’s what it means, Dara. I’m surprised, too, but at least this stops people from saying, “It’s a sign that ISTL isn’t at either TIFF or Telluride!”

Now, they can switch to, “ISTL not world premiering at Telluride means SPC doesn’t believe in it!”

      • Lilacflowers says:

Even though Crimson Peak isn’t showing at TIFF, GDT will be there so we can expect more harassment of Tom.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@et alors, and JGL has not ruled out casting himself as Morpheus.

      • et alors says:

Lilacflowers, I think JGL will end up with the role, although I personally think he’s a little too small physically.

BTW, Gaiman sounds so tired of the Hiddleston-as-Morpheus rumors that won’t die. He just tweeted a denial again.

        https://twitter.com/neilhimself/status/633759699188482048

      • Lilacflowers says:

@et alors, thanks for posting Neil’s tweet. He and Amanda are expecting a baby in a few weeks so nice of him to take the time to address twitter rumors.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Since at least five and counting clickbait sites are giving that zombie nag new shoes, it doesn’t surprise me. If you follow the tweet thread, it got started with a link to one of those ‘recent news’ garbage sites.

      • Waitwhat says:

@TB Has the third Holmes brother one come back around again yet? It’s about time for that one.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Waitwhat, I’m surprised it hasn’t with all the recent contact with Gatiss, whom he seems to have seen at least twice in the past week.

    • NUTBALLS says:

This is great news… I hope they were able to fix some of the issues per the feedback from the screener. Like TB, I’m not keen on the interviews being speckled in throughout the film.

Saw something about Tom playing Morpheus. Is that just a rumor?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Old rumor that keeps resurfacing on click bait sites because Gaiman once said he would like to see Tom in the part. Sandman belongs to a competitor and Marvel puts non-compete clauses in its long-term contracts. He still has at least two, if not three, films on his Marvel deal.

      • et alors says:

I think this story took off last winter, and Gaiman himself had to tweet a clarification after legitimate news sites, not just “Movie News Guide,” reported it as fact. It was just a passing comment he made in an interview months prior. He was ruling out people he’d previously thought could play Morpheus (Depp is too old, Cumberbatch is now doing Doctor Strange) and mentioned Hiddleston as a possibility or “anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones.”

I don’t know why this story is picking up steam again when only one obscure website is reporting this. I guess people really want Tom to play Morpheus.

    • madly says:

This should be interesting in light of the date photos. I wonder if the questions will be tightly controlled. Heard they were at SDCC

  16. Beach girl says:

@lilacflowers: I posted that article on tumbler. Didn’t know it was an old rumour. Also couldn’t possibly see how he could pull it off. Thanks for clearing it up.

    • TotallyBiased says:

BeachGirl–I ABSOLUTELY do NOT want to reshoe the zombie nag myself, let us please be clear. BUT I do think a couple of things keep getting lost:
Neil Gaiman’s denials aren’t based on the idea that he wouldn’t like Tom in the part, he’s made that clear. He evidently finds the side by side pics comparing Adam to that b&w sketch of Morpheus quite entertaining.
It’s that there are multiple people that would work just fine for him and, MORE IMPORTANTLY,
HE HAS NO INFLUENCE ON CASTING.
I realize that seems hard to believe (it certainly does to me) but it is a point he has made over and over again.
The undercurrent of rumour rises to a high tide whenever JGL is mentioned as playing the role himself, as well as directing it. Not sure how I feel about that–there’s a recent article about how closely certain actors resemble actual IRL persons they are playing (it has something to do with likely Oscar chances, and yes, Our Dragonfly King is in there). The author of the article makes an interesting point re JGL–that no matter what role he is doing or how he is made to look, he is always instantly identifiable as himself. So not sure how that would impact him if he took on Morpheus.
One of the things I appreciate most about TH is his chameleon talent. But he HAS already done the black-haired genre rockstar role, twice—does he need to do it again?

    • Lilacflowers says:

The Zurich (Sept 24 – Oct 4), Calgary (Sept 23 for the ISTL gala), and San Sebastian (Sept 19-26) film festivals are all within a day or two of one another with TIFF running from Sept 10-20. We are going to have the worst cases of jet lag ever

      • TotallyBiased says:

Luckily they all seem to be BEFORE shooting for Skull Island starts.
Perhaps it’s a good thing he has what is for him a lot of down time right now–at least so far as we know. A bit of rest before the whirlwind.

      • et alors says:

There’s no confirmation that any of the cast or creative team are appearing at CIFF, although invitations have been extended.

        http://www.rodeocountryradio.com/country-news/2015/8/18/hank-williams-biopic-i-saw-the-light-to-open-calgary-international-film-festival

      • Lilacflowers says:

@et alors, it would make sense if some members of the casts skipped some of the festivals. There are so many all bunched together.

@TotallyBiased, he’s probably doing interviews for print now for magazines/newspaper articles that will appear in October and November. The monthly glossies prepare their content several months in advance and some newspapers do their culture sections well in advance too. We can hope for some more modeling shoots to accompany those interviews. Last summer when he had down time, we got the Jaguar ad that came out this past spring and the narration for the Will Shakes Henry V and the voice work on Unity (which was released last week) so he may be doing more commercials or voice work now too.

      • Heather says:

        INTERVIEWS AND PHOTOSHOOTS. YES PLEASE.

(sorry. got so excited at the prospect of new photos I fell on my capslock.)

      • Dara says:

YES PLEASE! Oops, I mean – yes please (I guess I’m excited too). It’s been sooo long since we’ve had a proper editorial story featuring the Tom-ster (was Elle UK the last one?), and I’m desperate for some new photos.

  17. Ana A. says:

They have another writer for Skull Island. By now they have more writers than actors on this project. http://variety.com/2015/film/news/jurassic-world-scribe-to-do-polish-on-skull-island-1201572926/

    • TotallyBiased says:

Noticed that as well, Ana A. Ambivalence, nervous anticipation, mild disdain, hope–I’m just cycling through ALL sorts of reactions! Really not sure what to think about this; I’ve seen people point out the positives he can bring, but (like you, perhaps) it does unsettle me when they bring in a completely different writer so close to scheduled start time.

      • Ana A. says:

I feel the same. I think it has to be a decent project as Tom usually has a good hand in picking movies, but it seems that there are quite a few things that look bad from the outside. Constant re-writes, cast changes, pushing back of the filming date by a year now. The production has me worried. It can be positive and I don’t want to feel bad about it. I hope it is good and they just bring in another person to make sure that they have the best script they can have. That they rather take their time and work on problems than rush the movie.

    • Heather says:

I am nervous about this project. Didn’t they already re-write the script? Now getting another writer involved? Tom must feel like he’s onto another winner here for him to be sticking with it.

At this rate, they might as well just send him into the jungle with a video camera and let him wing in. 😉

    • Lilacflowers says:

He has a contract and so long as the film shooting schedule doesn’t look like it will interfere with other contractual obligations (Hello, Thor:Ragnorak), his ability to pull out of a contract is limited. The star of this movie is going to be the ape. People who like monster movies but don’t go to see other movies are going to be there for the ape. They won’t care about any of the actors.

    • NUTBALLS says:

This article says production starts in ealy 2016… WTH?? The production dates for the monkey movie are all over the place.

Bringing in a writer at the last minute to tidy up the script isn’t comforting. I wasn’t too jazzed about this and I’m still bitter they lost Simmons and Keaton.

      • Dara says:

The locations are all over the place too – I thought it had settled out to be Hawaii and Los Angeles (presumably for the studio work), then Hawaii and Atlanta, now it’s Hawaii, Vietnam and Iceland. The only constant seems to be Hawaii, and some of the crew have already set up shop there so I’m inclined to believe that’s happening for sure. Who knows about the rest of it. I still think it’s an October start, but my track record here hasn’t exactly been stellar.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, I think Vietnam has always been part of the mix. The director tweeted about scouting locations there and Tom mentioned it during an interview months ago – possibly during one of the BAFTA red carpet interviews, which was one of the very few he has done in the past year and a half

      • Dara says:

Detroit and Australia were also mentioned and/or scouted, and Tom talked about Iceland too a long, long time ago. They really have traveled the world looking for inspiration or actual locations. For some reason, I always assumed the scouting in Vietnam was about finding a ‘look’ which they’d recreate in a more practical location or with CGI.
