Lupita Nyong’o debuts a new hairstyle at the Disney Expo: adorable or meh?

LN1

Lupita Nyong’o came out for the D23 Expo, Disney’s annual expo event to promote their new properties. Lupita was actually hailed as a significant part of the “new Disney,” the more inclusive and diverse Disney, and Lupita was there to promote THREE upcoming Disney projects: Star Wars, The Jungle Book and The Queen of Katwe. She was on stage so much, even JJ Abrams was joking about it.

One of the reasons I love Lupita SO HARD is because she really is a total pro and when she goes into shilling mode, she’s proven herself to be a quick study. She worked the Disney crowd repeatedly like a pro and she even brought her whole team to Disney so that they could all go to Disneyland and put all the photos on social media.

As you’ve probably noticed, Lupita also debuted her new hairstyle. Thoughts? The thing is… I thought she was much more striking and elegant with the really short hair. It’s not that her hairstyle at this point is somehow fug – it is not at all. She looks adorable. But that’s the thing: now she looks “cute” and “adorable” and not like the fiercest, most elegant princess in all the land. It’s just a styling choice and God knows, she’ll probably change it up again in a few months.

    Adorable.

    • Hudson Girl says:

So adorable! I wondered if she was going to be one of those people that could only look good in super short hair. But, I love it.

    • doofus says:

yeah, she’s one of those people that are both “adorable/cute” AND beautiful.

Kerry Washington is another one that comes to mind.

    • Franca says:

This is my favourite hairstyle of hers. It looks AMAZING and it make sher look younger, which in Holyweird, is always a plus.

And she’s so beautiful. She reminds me of Carey Mulligan, they both have that special something.

    • Sonya says:

Yeah, I am a fan of this hair. I hope she keeps it as her day-to-day, as in the hair she goes back to after red carpets and movies. Also, maybe she was going to cute and adorable because it’s a Disney partnership she is currently promoting?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So cute. I think she could change it up if she wanted to look more sophisticated – slick it back or something, but for casual, I think it’s very becoming to her gorgeous face.

      • FLORC says:

Agree. She can wear it for all occasions. And i”m in awe of her skin. It glows, evenly toned and just lovely.

    • Starrywonder says:

Adorable. They are all really short too in that group picture.

    • Anne tommy says:

Nnnnnooooooooo……much preferred the very short hair, though she’s so fab she’d look great whatever the hairstyle

  2. Ellie66 says:

I love it! Great look for her she looks great!

    • Rice says:

Yes she does look great. My hair is sort of like that now but it’s gotten way long and won’t give me the “pouffiness” that she’s got. I just leave it in cute twists,

    • Franca says:

Can you do a hairstyle like that with Caucasian hair that isn’t curly? A perm would never look like that, would it?

      • Rice says:

Good question. My white friends have asked me that very question and….I’m just not sure. I get the look by twisting my hair then teasing out the twists with my fingers.

      • Kate says:

Franca, google crochet braids afro kinky hair. You would need to corn row your hair.

    • Layday says:

Yes I absolutely love it as well. I don’t think enough Black women celebrities wear their natural hair, so I’m glad she does. While people should be able to do what they want with their hair, I think when Black women celebrities do it, it sends a message that this type of look is beautiful for young girls too. Besides I think changing it up from time to time is a good thing.

      • ORLY says:

Well, that’s not her natural hair, it’s a natural looking weave.
        She looks gorgeous! 😊

  3. LadyMTL says:

Kaiser, I agree with you. I think the new hair is cute but her older style was stunning. If I had her bone structure I’d always keep my hair super super short the way she had it before, because it really highlighted how beautiful she is.

This new look isn’t awful by any means, but if I had to choose I’d definitely go back to the shorter ‘do.

    • Beth No. 2 says:

Agreed. I think this look makes her look more conventional, whereas she was stunning with the super short ‘do.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree too, the very short style worked on her so well – she has such a beautiful face and lovely bone structure, she could pull it off like few women could.
This new look is very cute and fun, but I too hope she goes back to her previous style eventually.
I’ve been really looking forward to the Queen of Katwe, sounds like such a great story.

    • Dubois says:

I think if she can get a more angular cut to it it will look good. I’m thinking Whitney Houston’s cut circa the late 80’s. Either that or go full ‘fro ala Solange. Though that might be too dramatic for an actress.

    • Keaton says:

I concur 100% She was so ELEGANT with the short hair. Now she’s adorable but I think what made her really stand out was her elegance.

    • tracking says:

Yes, I agree too. She looks great both ways, but the shorter do highlights her face so beautifully.

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, I loved her shorter ‘do.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Agreed.

    • danielle says:

      This!

  4. Redd says:

I like it with the shape of her face. Love the dress, too, but not loving the white shoes.

  5. Kitten says:

I liked her best with super-short hair but really, she has the face to pull off any haircut.

Also, to be fair to her, it must get kind of boring having your hair so short. There’s not much you can do with it, you know?

    • Mimz says:

I came late to the party today BUT I see you said the EXACT same words I was going to say Kitten 😀 .

I’ll just add that, being black, your hair seems to take forever to grow and look good enough to do a fancy hairstyle… and I know how painful it is to wait so I can imagine why she’s enjoying styling it in different ways. She looks great though.

      • Kitten says:

Yeah those twists and her natural hair texture seems like something she could have a ton of fun with.

      • hmph says:

Well, I am black and my hair grows super fast. I think people think black people’s hair grow slower because it’s so curly and tightly coiled but if you actually take a few strands and stretch them with your finger, you’ll see that it is in fact very long. This looks like Lupita’s hair combed out to me.

    • Shambles says:

Yeah, I think the über-short hair did her ridiculous bone structure the most justice, but I think she’s a princess no matter what. She still looks beautiful, of course.

And I would probably get tired of wearing my hair one way all the time, too. The shortest I’ve gone so far is a stacked bob, and even that got old really fast. With my super-curly hair, all I could ever do was straighten it if I wanted it to look decent. Now that the mane is coming back I feel like I can do so much more with it, but funnily enough I usually just leave it natural. I’m at least glad I have the luxury of doing that. Even so… I see a shaved-on-the-sides, curly-on-the-top pixie in my distant future (s/o to QQ).

      • QQ says:

HOLLAH! but yes I’m a Champion for short do’s but i recognize too that if you want some versatility and it doesn’t have some length to it, it does become a bit of an “i’m out of ideas” thing, I must say she did go the distance and was quite creative with what she was working with before

    • Solsolito says:

That’s what hats are for! My head is completely shaved, and being bi-racial, my hair is an abundance of ringlets that refuse to be tamed. I got sick of spending hours trying to force my hair to bow to my command that I just decided to shave the whole thing off. The best decision I ever made. Short or no hair can be versatile; I jazz it up with bold jewelry, clothes and hats. It’s fun to be different.

      • Shambles says:

I can imagine it would be so much fun to accessories with a super-short ‘do, Solsolito. I’ll bet you look fabulous 😀

      • Solsolito says:

Thank you, Shambles! I send you proverbial hugs from Canada!
I had a waist-length mohawk for the better part of two years. I’ve been approached by strangers occasionally to tell me that they think I’m beautiful (I’m always embarrassed but completely flattered when this happens). However, since shaving my head, I get told this several times per week. People really respond to my shaved head but I think it’s part and parcel with my feeling uber confidant with my hair now. I finally feel like myself and that, in and of itself, is incredibly empowering.

      • Kitten says:

Didn’t even think about the hats. I did think about some of the headbands and other hair adornments that I’ve seen Lupita sporting in the past.

I envy you. I wish I had the ovaries to just shave my head.

      • Solsolito says:

So many women have told me that they wished they had either the head or the facial features to pull it off. It’s not an easy decision, but one I’ve never regretted for one minute.
It takes me five minutes to get ready for work and I never have to worry about the weather wreaking havoc on my hair. It’s bliss.
And for the record: I am not one of those women who can pull off a headband. I look like a baby whose parents are trying to hide the fact that their child hasn’t grown her hair yet but they need people to know that she is a girl. Hats, yes. Headbands, a big, BIG no. But at least Lupita can do it.

      • Wren says:

Oooooh, I’m in awe of your shaved head greatness. I’ve been toying with the idea of cutting my hair all the way off. If I go short, it’ll be all the way. I’ve been told I have the bone structure for it. My hair is beautiful but such a freaking pain. Literally. Mr. Wren might have a heart attack, he likes long hair. I do love hats, though.

      • I had my head shaved for a couple of years–my hair was a triangle shaped afro. I used to joke that I looked like Sideshow Bob. I just hated how round my face was/is…..I don’t think I looked TERRIBLE, but I think my face was more balanced out by HAIR.

  6. Astrid says:

Her hair is fine, it’s the white shoes that are cringeworthy!

  7. smcollins says:

I think she looks good. You gotta change it up once in a while to keep your look from getting stale, you know? She’s so beautiful, though, I don’t think there’s a look she couldn’t pull off.

  8. bjesgirl says:

Lol she’s pretty much perfect. Like a doll. I wish we could see a greater representation of black women like this. Dark skin and natural kinky hair. So tired of mixed race women representing us in the media. No shade but my definition of black beauty is not Beyonce. She pretty much looks like a white woman. Lupita is black and beautiful. Truly inspiring.

    • senna says:

I loooove the texture she’s got going on. super cool tight ringlets mixed in with softer curls! I think Lu could pretty much pull off any hairstyle with that angelic face of hers. It is nice to see a black woman not co-opting white beauty standards to appeal to mainstream media, and to have people geek out enthusiastically over her hair at the same time.

    • Kiki says:

She looks beautiful. I am so proud of her. I wished he many sucess in her acting career. And really smart that she is doing Disney. She is on a roll.

    • AlmondJoy says:

I love Lupita and agree that there needs to be a greater representation of darker skinned black women, but I disagree with your definition of black beauty. Black beauty is not confined to just one look because there are so many different types of black women. We don’t come in just one shade, body type or hair texture. Black beauty can be represented in many different ways. And Beyoncé is still a black woman, regardless of her complexion or how she wears her hair.

      • lobbit says:

Yes, black beauty can be expressed in many different ways – but more often than not, the media uses just one way: super light skin and straight hair.

    • Original T.C. says:

I LOVE her ringlets and natural hair texture. She is so pretty with any hair style. I can’t believe how incredibly happy I am to open Celebitchy and see a beautiful display of my race’s predominate hair texture 🙂

I can now use these pics as my screen saver and show my non-Black (and some Black ones who are ashamed of our natural hair) friends and coworkers.

Would have no problems with the Beyonces and Halle’s of pop culture being if we would have a higher representation of the Lupita’s too, who is what most Black women as a globally percentage look like.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t meant to bash the women Hollywood White men choose to represent us, it’s not their fault. Just like it’s not the fault of the Jennifer Lawrence’s that they are chosen to represent all White women who come in many shapes, sizes, hair and eye color. Blond hair and blue eyes are genetically minority traits, but according to Hollywood that’s what MOST White women are born with!

  9. Sullivan says:

The last photo is cute, right? But isn’t she veering into Ariana Grande territory?

    • claire says:

NO. She’s wearing the ears where you’re supposed to – Disney World. Not on stage in lingerie like Grande.

  10. AlmondJoy says:

It’s gorg! We naturals like to switch our hair up all the time, no biggie. You can do much with short natural hair so I love that she tries different things. This actually looks like Crochet Braid hair or Marley hair to me.

  11. capepopsie says:

I like her better with short hair!

    • V4Real says:

It doesn’t look good at all to me. I can’t believe she wore this style on purpose. I still don’t get the hype about her and her less than stellar career.

  12. mememe says:

She looks flawless either way. Acts she looks younger with long hair!

  13. Sure Jan says:

I love her look she’s keeping things fresh. I’m glad to see she’s getting different roles and opportunities to showcase her talent.

  14. icy says:

    Beautiful!! Oscar Isaac, yummy!!

  15. Morse0412 says:

Im just happy she didnt go super long. Her short hair is part of what makes her stand out and I love that she does natural hair. Gorgeous either way

  16. Sashmo says:

The language of this article screams possessiveness-
She’s a grown ass woman- adorable or meh? She’s not a “fierce princess”?
Look, I’m white. But I can see how you are objectifying this woman- you want Her to fall into a category that you can pocket and keep safe. Kinda like hoe Hollywood offers coloured women limited roles- you are limiting her.

Jesus Christ- sometimes you’re just gross.

    • Wonderbunny says:

While I wouldn’t put it quite that strongly, I agree with the sentiment. I think she’s really beautiful and emits this calm confidence, authenticity and professionalism. I admire her for that and find the “adorable” and “fierce” comments condescending. She doesn’t have to be “fierce”, because she’s pretty damn great just as she is.

  17. Chinoiserie says:

Lupita is pretty much Disney in-house talent these days, all her future film projects are from Disney I believe. Apart from those she is going to be in a play believe?

  18. Solsolito says:

Speaking for myself, my hair grows insanely fast. But I know it’s not like that for all women of colour. Growing one’s hair out can sometimes takes months, or for the unfortunate few, years. I find however, that sometimes people can be disparaging about natural hair which is why some women choose not to rock it. My theory is: do whatever the hell you want. It’s your head and if you have the cojones to rock out with your fro out, I say, more power to you! We need more women in society who subscribe to their own standard of beauty as opposed to trying to shoehorn themselves in to a standard that doesn’t resonate with them.

  19. NEWBIE says:

All I want to know is what foundation and lipstick does she use cause she looks FLAWLESS!!!

  20. iheartjacksparrow says:

I wouldn’t say she “worked the crowd.” I was there, and the only project she really talked about was the Queen of Katwe, which she seemed very passionate about. In the Jungle Book presentation, she basically repeated back what she was asked. I don’t remember her saying anything in the Star Wars presentation, but that basically belonged to Harrison Ford.

  21. Bobo says:

So cute, I love it! And it makes her look seriously younger (which I suppose could be a good or bad thing).

And if she gets bored of it, she can always shave it off and look just as good. How many women can do that? Not me lol…

  22. annaloo. says:

She always is easy on the eyes. Love her.

  23. Wren33 says:

I like it. It makes her look even younger than she already looked. I need some of her anti-aging magic.

  24. Daria Morgendorffer says:

Lupita can do no wrong in my book. She always looks flawless.

  25. teacakes says:

She looks good either way because she has the bone structure and face shape to carry super short hairstyles as well as more grown-out/longer ones.

But much like Natalie Portman, I thought she was most striking with the short hair. No judgment on this hairstyle though, she looks really cute and if I hadn’t seen her with short hair before I’d be all over this one.

  26. Meatball says:

I love it. I want my hair like that, but it gets to the in between stage, where it isn’t long enough to be hanging down, but too long to actually style, so I cut it or shave my head. I think this last time will be it and I will just suffer through until it grows.

  27. lunchcoma says:

I like the shorter cut better too, but this is also adorable, and I think it’s a little more suited to what she’s currently promoting because it’s a softer, more fun look.

  28. Stini says:

It’ll be for Americanah, which I think she’s making at the moment. A lot of that book has to do with the main character’s relationship to her hair.

  29. Jayna says:

I’m so glad to see her grow her hair out. I think she is beautiful, and her features pop more with more hair and will be able to change looks up more. I liked her short hair on her, but nice to see a change.

  30. cujokay says:

ADORABLE! She can lose the white shoes though; I hate them. A simple black heel would have been more flattering.

  31. Zaid says:

I love her hair! It looks adorable!
You don’t have to look sexy at all times, it’s fine to take a break.

That said, what she does with her skin? I want to have smooth skin like that.

  32. Miran says:

She looks great, but personally I agree that this post is a little condescending because if we start pigeon holing her based on her hair, the industry will too. She looks great, full stop. No more adjectives needed.

  33. Wallflower says:

I love it. It gives her a whimsical look and is very soft on the face. I like this better than her short do.

  34. Wilma says:

I love her hair and she will be able to change styles more easily now that it’s a bit longer.

  35. sx55 says:

It is either the seasonal allergies or she was baked. Lupita: it’s called Visine.

Use it like there’s no tomorrow.

  36. Avecuny says:

I love it! I’m biased tho, that’s what my hair looks like everyday. And I love love love the pic of her with Oscar Issac, sigh, so dreamy!

  37. Naddie says:

One of these days I was thinking about how much I wanted to see her with a new hairstyle, and bang, there she is. Beautiful, just like I imagined. She can do anything and still look good. Not good, great.

  38. EN says:

    > One of the reasons I love Lupita SO HARD is because she really is a total pro and when she goes into shilling mode, she’s proven herself to be a quick study.

So, everybody else is a famewhore, but Lupita is a pro. OK.
I personally think marketing one’s work is a “must do” in the showbusiness. And I don’t get the shade so many actors are getting here for doing it.

  39. Gelina says:

    Adorable!

  40. lala says:

oh oh lupita,,you know some of those folk will tell you how to wear your hair and you know the type I’m talking about….

  41. Mike says:

    adorable, but not sexy.
