VF: Amal Clooney is ‘bringing back the lost art of dressing for the occasion’

Amal Clooney’s vacation is finally over! Amal was photographed in London today – go here to see those photos. She’s wearing an absolutely odd ensemble involving a baggy Stella McCartney tunic and skirt, plus some too-huge shoes. The whole vibe of the look is that Amal is hiding her figure. There were stories about Amal wanting to try to get pregnant during her Italian holiday with George Clooney, and that outfit will surely keep those rumors going.

I’m actually a little bit surprised that Amal is back in London. I thought she would be in Como with George for the entire summer, at least until mid-September, which is usually when George ends his Italian summer holidays. I guess she had to come back to London for some stunt-barristering!

Meanwhile, did anyone else read Vanity Fair’s sycophantic piece about Amal Clooney’s style? Amal – and not George – made it onto this year’s VF Best Dressed List, and last night VF published this piece about how Amal is all about “the lost art of dressing for the occasion.” The occasion being… getting pap’d regularly, I would assume. I mean, I understand what VF is saying, that Amal differentiates between “daytime” looks and “evening” looks and she knows the difference between business, cocktail and evening dresses. I just don’t think Amal is the best example to use.

The patron saint of Celebitchy is here to save the day! I feel better already.

    • Chrissy says:

I was thinking that Clooney’s PR guy must be back from vacation, that’s why we’re seeing this today. It’s been kind of quiet on the Amal front lately. Her casual dress sense is horrible IMO. She always dresses too young for her age. Any other time she seems more like a fashion victim than a fashion icon with the clothes wearing her.

      • Wentworth Miller says:

So yeah. Here’s what I’ve come to realize. Labels, titles and categories are thrown around at everyone. Everyone wants to be a ‘thing’ that happened, if u get what I mean. One appearance on some stupid reality show automatically makes someone a celebrity. 100 up votes on YouTube gets u nominated for a VMA. Wear one cute outfit and suddenly ur a fashion icon. It’s all so ridiculous.

  2. InvaderTak says:

    Huuuh? okydoky then.

    • Belle Epoch says:

It’s as if they threw her photos at some poor writer and said, “here, write something fabulous.” What on earth could be said about her style? It’s expensive toddler clothes? How about “dresses for the occasion”? No, everybody does that. I know – we’ll make it a LOST ART! Boom!

      • Shoe_Lover says:

sadly not everyone does that, i recently went to the theatre and there were people in sneakers and jeans. Just no.
But Amal does not fit the “dressing for the occasion” bill. she looks crap so often. some of her clothes are nice, excluding the crap she is wearing in these photos, and she is occasionally on point but she isn’t bringing any “lost art” back

  3. Nonny says:

Dressing for the occasion……yeah, if the occasion is painting your front porch. What is with those jeans? Maybe she shredded them up with her unicorn horn.

    • Coconut says:

Hole-y jeans are in! Just read a spread on them in Us!

      • Nonny says:

They might be ‘in’ but nobody with an ounce of taste would dream of wearing them. Perhaps appropriate for a 16 year old. Certainly not a woman of her age!

  4. sofia says:

    huummmm… no.

  5. Jas says:

That woman has the worst taste in clothes ever.

    • Colleen says:

I’m glad I’m not alone in my feelings then. I dislike most of what she wears. I was thinking perhaps I just don’t “get” fashion.

      • sofia says:

And many names in fashion make things that just seem to made to be different. Stella has some interesting things, but a lot of it is just cooky and most women wouldn’t look good with it. I also hate how a label is perceived to make someone stylish and that’s not true at all. You can buy clothing from “nice” brands but that won’t make you look good, actually many times you’ll look ridiculous. Amal is a good example. But maybe I don’t get it too ^_^

    • Esmom says:

I don’t know about ever, but yeah, it’s bad. People (and I mean the media) need to stop trying to make her a style icon. She just doesn’t have “it.”

  6. Jayna says:

That is one ugly Stella McCartney outfit. The one good thing I can say about it is the color is pretty on her.

Her boobs look bigger in it. I do wonder if she’s pregnant. It could just be the cut of the tunic across her chest gives the illusion of being bigger breasted.

    • Fa says:

I’m with you in this she has bigger boobs normal her chest is flat, just wait George will announce in September because he will appear in a talk show as the guest he will say we pregnant 1 year after he got married

    • Nic919 says:

She got really skinny for the wedding and it is possible she is getting back to her pre wedding weight. She might have just enjoyed the pasta in Italy.

But a pregnancy announcement wouldn’t surprise me either. Since Clooney is the first guest on Colbert, this would get great ratings for both.

    • Neah23 says:

Could just be a boob job.

      • Hally says:

I think it’s a boob job, I first noticed it a while back, some event where she wore a really nice form fitting cobalt blue dress, a few other readers have picked up on it as well. Very surprised the media hasn’t jumped on it yet.

And I don’t think this is her intention, but this is a perfect outfit to start baby bump rumors.

  7. Eleonor says:

I like what she is wearing. It’s a mess I can totally see it, but she makes it work…

  8. Neah23 says:

Ok Clooney differently had his PR team do that write up in VF.

    STOP THE MADNESS GEORGE 😱

  9. lurker says:

The “lost art of dressing for the occasion”?! Lol. So shamelessly classist.

  10. Tough Cookie says:

That pink outfit is ….interesting. And those shoes….they were cute when I wore them in the sixth grade…many many years ago LOL

    • Esmom says:

      Seriously, those shoes.

      • Chrissy says:

I really don’t get those shoes either but maybe her podiatrist finally had a word with her about her weird toe situation and this is the result? Either way, they look like something my grandma would wear. Not with couture like in this case.

  11. Defaultgirl says:

I know I’m gonna catch hell for saying it but, Wow has she LOST weight?? She looks like a scarecrow in the picture with the ripped jeans.. Ijs

  12. Tash says:

Her socks on that last pic…wtf?!?!

  13. JH says:

She has TERRIBLE street style and is completely clueless on how to dress her body. That is all.

  14. agnes says:

“I guess she had to come back to London for some stunt-barristering!” LOL

Even dressed for the occasion her taste in clothes remains terrible.

  15. Frosty says:

If VF blew that smoke any harder it would have an aneurysm.

    • Esmom says:

      Lol. Yes.

    • boredblond says:

Hehehe..and consider where they are blowing it. Her ‘job’ is pseudo celeb in search of a reality show, and she dresses for her scheduled pap shots..even the benifer nanny doesn’t love the attention this much.

  16. S says:

I hate Stella McCartney on principle, but I love that outfit. It’s comfortable looking, it’s good with her height, the shape is interesting, I like the play of soft ribbed knit with angled hems, it’s directional fashion without being man-repellar material.

  17. Anne says:

Umm, I’m all for celebrating women who represent more than what the Kardashians choose to stand for, but this exultation of Amal Clooney as a fashion icon is kind of lame. VF is fairly predictable in their choice of best-dressed, no? I sense their choices have more to do with perceived social position than real style.

Amal does seem to dress for herself, though. I’ll give her that. Her looks aren’t always to my taste, but she seems consistent in what she chooses. Good for her.

  18. lucy2 says:

I’ve liked some of her gowns, but dislike her street style. Dressing for the occasion? Because she puts on a gown when going to a fancy event…like every other person there?

“Amal wanting to try to get pregnant during her Italian holiday with George Clooney, and that outfit will surely keep those rumors going.” Huh? Only if people think you have a bump to hide in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

    • Nic919 says:

I find she dresses well when she actually goes to work related events. But her casual style is ass and her formal style has been hit or miss. The red dress was nice, but that yellow one was horrendous.

She doesn’t know how to mix casual wear. Those shoes do not work with that pink outfit. If she substituted the skirt part with jeans, the non ripped up kind, then those shoes would work. Otherwise, the shoes should be less chunky and a lighter colour to fit with the large skirt.

  19. Blue says:

She could very well be pregnant, it would be a smart move to get at least one baby out of George before the marriage ends. Amal always seems to be travelling somewhere and parading around for the paps in her chic sense of style designer clothes. Those are fugly shoes and belong with a pair of jeans in winter.

  20. Mimz says:

    BARF

  21. Daria Morgendorffer says:

I’m sorry, I might be in the minority here but I think Amal’s style is terrible more often than not.

  22. lunchcoma says:

    *rolls eyes*

Amal isn’t even that well-dressed, and she’s certainly not the only woman in the world who dresses differently for errands and evenings out.

  23. thaisajs says:

You know who dresses for an occasion? Kiernan Shipka. She always looks fashionable yet age appropriate no matter where she is.

Amal Clooney has dreadful taste in casual clothes. She generally looks great for formal occasions or when she’s heading to work, but just walking around? Yech.

    • lucy2 says:

Yes! She always looks great at every event, and never inappropriate for her age.
She also seems like a well adjusted girl, and a talented actor. I hope the best for her.

  24. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Oh brother.

  25. FLORC says:

If the occasion is “90’s garage sale” then yes. She is dressing for the occasion. It is hardly a lost art. You knpw who dressed for the occasion? Ms. Frizzle on the Magic School Bus.

  26. meme says:

she’s absolutely pregnant…expect the announcement any day now.

    • Dari says:

CDAN says he purposely got himself fixed so it would not happen. So most people are going to think it’s not his.

    • siri says:

I doubt that. It would surprise me if she even wanted a child, and I also believe she has some health issues. And George…ok, he said a lot of things that weren’t true, but I somehow think he’s really not at all interested in becoming a father.

  27. Coconut says:

I gotta say that aside from the gloves of doom at the Oscars (?) and the outfit in the header shot, I really enjoy Amal’s style!

  28. dippit says:

Read the VF piece and filed it with the last round of Clooney PR puff pieces (The Cut and another giggle worthy gushy one I forget).

Did note that now that Amal’s is totally failing to be made to Happen, despite ALL the continued exhausting and expensive efforts, the best they could muster to sell her style icon title was a department store (albeit a grand one) head buyer, a costume designer who wrote a book, and a journo from VF itself. A few months ago Clooney PR would’ve shot for far higher.

And, now VF NOT Vogue? Has Amal’s ‘friendship’ with Wintour soured?

As someone said in a post a couple of weeks ago, the only patch to fix Amal showing up as not to be all she was promised to be early on is a baby. It’s sad typing that with a resigned cynicism but that looks to be the most likely next installment of this show.

  29. lowercaselois says:

Even with Amal, I fear there is still is the lost art of dressing for the occasion.

  30. Lotta says:

I like her streetstyle, so maybe I got bad taste then. :-/

  31. Christin says:

The hello kitty looking outfit is apparently out, but she kept her bowling shoes.

  32. LAK says:

Her pre-wedding wardrobe was atrocious. GC’s stylist is amazing.

    • Hally says:

I really think she dresses herself, except for his premieres when she works with a stylist to secure designer gowns and accessories. For her daily wardrobe, at most I think she might consult with a stylist every once in a while when she needs a wardrobe refresh. I don’t think she has one review her outfits before she steps out everyday. And is it really so hard to believe a grown woman with money at her disposal can’t dress herself? Her personal style is not my taste but I appreciate she has fun with it.

Now her blowouts are consistently amazing and she for sure has professional help with that, and I am completely jealous!

  33. Pandy says:

Um, it takes money to “dress for every occasion” … so yeah, she’s got access to lots of it now. Oh yeah, her stylists help her along with “dressing for every occasion” … f*ck off VF. So out of touch.

  34. mememe says:

Her clothes make me irrationally angry. Maybe that’s what couture does?

This was my thought process in the second it took for me to look at the top photo: ” Tunic? Yes. Purse? Yes! Skirt? Well…maybe. Shoes? WHAT THE F@*K IS ON YOUR FEET, WOMAN??? NO!!!” *sign of the cross*
