This story feels like it’s entirely based on these photos of Susan Sarandon smiling at Jake Gyllenhaal at the Southpaw premiere, but it’s Friday, and the tunes are slow. Susan is probably not macking on Jake, yet the tabloids love to use the word “cougar” any chance they get. This hookup probably would be a hot one, so I’ll root for it even though it seems fake. Susan has a habit of entering relationships with younger guys, that’s true. The language the Enquirer uses is just awful. The tab says she sees him as “prey,” and they’re “on the down-low.” Jake is 32 years younger than Susan, but he doesn’t really have a type. So I guess this is vaguely possible:

For what it’s worth, Gossip Cop says the hookup isn’t happening, but that doesn’t mean a secret affair isn’t possible (only that someone denied it). Let’s open this one up for discussion. Should Susan get with Jake? I think she’d rock his world. And there’s no reason she should have to date “within her age group” anyway. Jake’s over 30, so he’s mature enough to date older. It’s fine! Actually, from a biological standpoint, the older woman younger man dynamic is actually a perfect match. Hormones in synch, etc.
I think it IS the way nature intended. But like most things, it just got corrupted by the insecurities of the good ole boys network.

I think there are a few reasons for the older woman/younger man being more acceptable (at least on here) because:
1) I think there’s a power disparity between a much younger woman and an older man. This isn’t really true in the opposite instance as, unfortunately, women have a whole lot less power in our society and thus when an older woman is with a younger man, it sort of evens out the power structure.
2). Some older women (rightly so) have a fear of being replaced in their marriage by a younger woman. And some women have experienced this themselves. So there is a whole lot more outrage against a younger woman/older man situation because of this.
That’s my take on this.
Thanks Boston for taking the time to post this. I don’t disagree with what you’ve said, but I dislike double standards – whether it works against or for the disadvantaged group. Maybe I’m too fair-minded, and as you can see from the comments here I’m in the minority, but I still thought I’d point it out.

You are totally right, Beth No. 2, it IS a double-standard, but it is one of the few double-standards that women can win at.
To add, I could post something like my first comment because I knew I could “get away” with it as a woman. Sometimes on the internet there seems to be an automatic “mark-down” of one’s opinions if one were a man commenting on sexism, or a straight person commenting on homosexuality, or a non-POC commenting on racism. It makes me uncomfortable.
I wish we can all learn to consider opinions based more on the strength of the argument itself, and less on the gender/sexuality/colour/etc of the person making it.

I never found Susan Sarandon that pretty until lately…I find her prettier now than I ever did when she was younger. She’s older than I am but not by a lot. I’m personally not into the cougar thing, but I have had many, many opportunities to be–it’s just not something that would ever appeal to me.

I think it’s basically older guys in Hollywood don’t look at women in their 50s and 60s to date. You’re older and so where do you meet single men your age, which are probably few and far between? The men you would come in contact with are through your career and in social circles, etc. And if you meet them, you are invisible in that age range to those available men, because they are dating and marrying women 20 to 30 years younger.
So it seems like they tend to end up with much, much younger men. Not usually like Jake, successful, but more like much younger guys who are attracted to a powerful older woman who are still very pretty but also the lifestyle it brings, just like much younger women are attracted to.
