Tom Hiddleston is pretty much like Vivien Leigh, says ‘I Saw the Light’ director

You guys asked for a non-Duggar post, so here you go. There were also some requests for Idris, Tom Hardy, maybe even some Fassbender. But those guys aren’t up to much, although Idris is going to be at the Toronto Film Festival in less than a month and it’s going to be awesome, I’m sure. Especially if he can find a way to party with Tom Hiddleston! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, after much hand-wringing and worrying, Tommy’s I Saw the Light will definitely be coming to TIFF. It will have a “special presentation” and I guess TIFF will be the North American premiere? And Tom will be at TIFF for High Rise as well. After TIFF, ISTL will also open the Calgary International Film Festival on September 23rd. God, I hope we get lots of photos.

Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly had a nice little write-up about ISTL. The director, Marc Abraham, defends his use of an English actor to play an iconic American, and Abraham ends up comparing Tommy to Vivien Leigh. Perfection.

The Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light covers the country-music legend’s rise, his volatile relationship with his wife, and his struggles with substance abuse and spina bifida — all before his death at 29. “He was really the first rock star — and the first rock star to go down like that,” says director Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius), who also wrote the script.

Tom Hiddleston stars as Williams, and Elizabeth Olsen plays his wife, Audrey. To play the troubled singer, Hiddleston honed his singing and guitar skills with Grammy winner Rodney Crowell, even moving into Crowell’s house outside Nashville to practice all day, every day. The result? “Every note, every line, everything is Tom,” Abraham says. “He’s crazy talented. If you didn’t like him, you’d be jealous of him.”

Instead of aiming for a perfect imitation of Williams’ signature voice, Abraham says their goal was for Hiddleston to capture the singer’s emotion and authenticity, adding, “I knew that Tom Hiddleston or anyone was never going to sound exactly like Hank Williams.” Still, Abraham says Hiddleston nailed it — even if he isn’t exactly from the south.

“When people ask me, ‘Why’d you get an Englishman?’ I say, ‘He’s the best actor I know to play the part,’” Abraham says. “Who’s the most famous southerner ever portrayed in the movies? Scarlett O’Hara. Who plays her? Vivien Leigh.”

[From EW]

I’m looking forward to the reviews from all of Tom’s films, mostly Crimson Peak and ISTL. It feels like Hiddleston is on the cusp of making time for an awards push, but no one really knows if the films are going to be critically supported. He doesn’t have Harvey Weinstein backing him, like Benedict Cumberbatch did last year. Tommy needs “buzz”. And he needs gossip too, which is why this Elizabeth Olsen thing might be heating up.

Is that woman nekkid under that coat?? Is she playing one of Hank’s flings? Hey, and his belt’s unbuckled!! This is giving me all sorts of… thoughts. So, perhaps we can expect some nudity in ISTL after all? We know THEO isn’t shy about filming in the buff.

This movie gets more interesting by the week… Labor Day weekend can’t come soon enough.

Thank you Kaiser, for my dandelion break. Opus doesn’t do much for my lady bits.

    • Maxine DuCamp says:

Someone on Twitter figured out that the actress in the photo plays one of his flings, the unnamed “Pensacola Woman.” I have to admit, when I first saw the picture this morning, I was so distracted by TH’s undone belt buckle that I didn’t even notice the actress was topless under her coat until someone mentioned it!

    • mimif says:

Totally looks like he just shagged her (on set).

    • Lilacflowers says:

I saw that picture the other day and wondered the same thing

    • Heather says:

Being that close to Tom, my clothes would likely fall off too. 😉 I do wonder why she removed the photo from instagram, apparently it was posted 43 weeks ago and no one noticed it!

Still on the fence about watching the film. Nevermind all that EO rubbish, THIS is the photo that would almost persuade me!

      • Lilacflowers says:

I think there is some natural law that he be naked in half of his films. He has had 11 films released and been fully clothed in 7 of them. These 3 new films will bring the total to 14 films, 7 fully clothed, 7 unclothed. It’s the natural balance of things

      • jammypants says:

        “natural” order indeed

    • Lisa says:

Gah, he’s so fine! I SO would!!!

  2. Beth No. 2 says:

ISTL’s distributor is SPC, which has had much more awards success of late than Harvey Weinstein. They were responsible for Whiplash, Still Alice and Foxcatcher last season.

ISTL is listed as a “world premiere” on the TIFF website.

    Anyway…

“There were also some requests for Idris, Tom Hardy, maybe even some Fassbender.”

All three, please and thank you.

  3. InvaderTak says:

My super southern momma was impressed. I had to tell her that that was Loki from Thor as Williams. I hope and this is good and the country music world stays the f in Nashville.

  4. lower-case deb says:

my reading comprehension being what it is…. stringing the words TomHiddles with Pretty Like Vivien Leigh just brought up images that’s too disturbing at this time of day.

  5. CidySmiley says:

There is something so seriously false about him. Beyond that, I think he’ll do good. Also, is that woman naked under that jacket?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Appears so and his belt is undone.

    • jammypants says:

I find him genuine. Different strokes! and yes she’s topless and he’s unbuckled.

    • Sixer says:

I think he’s superficial rather than fake. He’s this weird amalgam of the posh, polite Brit and the PRd-into-naff-nothingness that personifies so much of Hollywood.

But I don’t mind because a) he’s got good legs, b) he gives me remarkably fertile ground for mickey-taking and c) my bestie Celebitchy pals like him.

Oh, and at times when perverted twots are all over everywhere (I’m sure I’m going to find a Duggar under my bed or something) then Tommy is the least of our worries. Even if he did do the unspeakable and bin the Jarthy.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Oh Sixer, will you ever forgive him for binning the Jarthy? Enjoy some Bloom County 2015 — our most entertaining political cartoonist has resurrected his comic just in time for our upcoming presidential election. You would love it.

I do get giddy at the thought of him TAWKING earnestly at TIFF and hearing your analysis. I may be as excited for that as I am the trailer.

In a world of Duggers, Tom is a ray of sunshine and a cool drink of sweet iced tea…

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I think he *did* bin Jarthy, and I also suspect the jury is out on EO, though I would fully expect him to play the Oscar PR game to the hilt.

I fully agree with “weird amalgam of the posh, polite Brit and the PRd-into-naff-nothingness that personifies so much of Hollywood,” but in a world filled with truly deplorable WTF twots like Trump and the Duggars, he is pure cotton candy, and I can live with that.

      • Sixer says:

I will NEVER forgive him for binning the Jarthy. I loved her. She trolled. She smoked cigarettes. She wore towelling robes in hotel bars. She was THE BEST.

      • NUTBALLS says:

He dated a smoker?? That doesn’t compute with my image of healthy, exerciser Tom. I’m so let down now.

I missed the towelling robes too. I didn’t have a chance to get to know Jarthy before she was off the scene. Boo hiss.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He may still be hiding her. In full view. Because traveling together through airports constituted hiding

      • jammypants says:

Or simply not discussing the intimate details constitutes as hiding. The scandal! 😛

      • Miss Jupitero says:

        Toweling robes? I think I missed this…..

    • masy says:

I think that’s because he’s too sweet and nice. As if he’s a flytrap for the stupid believers leading to no-good.

  6. Beach girl says:

I’m not sure having HW backing you is a positive anymore. SPC has done just fine the last few years marketing their projects during awards season so I’m confident they will run a good campaign for TH. As far as the gossip rags go the last time I mentioned my displeasure with having that included in PR strategy I got a lot of snark so No Comment.

    • Dara says:

I’ll admit to doing a tiny cheer when the news about SPC picking up ISTL was announced. Just thinking it might be HW filled me with dread. SPC still campaigns hard for their films, but I think they show a little more finesse with it.

Are we sure the romance tabloid gossip was part of the strategy for marketing ISTL? Or did someone’s PR team go rogue and decide it was a good way to boost the profile of their client? I mean, I’m sure they had buy-in from their client, but they may not have consulted Sony Pictures before dropping those stories (can we agree they were planted?). I just can’t see SPC sanctioning that kind of drivel in advance of a serious award campaign.

      • Madly says:

Most definitely a set up- the tabloid stuff. But lately the only outlets that are still running the romance angle are the lowest tier online drivel sites. Industry sites are not referencing it. I guess we’ll see what happens at TIFF in how they play it in real life.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I’m very interested to see how Tom and Lizzy interact at TIFF and how they will answer any questions concerning their off-screen relationship that may come up. I see them either confirming it via statements and actions or vagueing it up to keep the chatter going.

I would be shocked if they denied anything was going on, since that would reduce the chatter on the interwebs about them.

  7. Tiffany says:

Between the crap gossip news and the heartbreaking news of the shoot her in St Louis. I need to leave work, go home and YouTube some Tommy dancing and gyrating.

    • et alors says:

The little 9-year-old girl? Yeah, I couldn’t read more than a few lines of the first article I saw before I clicked close.

ETA: Maybe you’re talking about the teenager shot in the back, though. Too many deaths..

Here’s a video to start things off for you. Dance more!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMd7piKhCcU

      • NUTBALLS says:

et alors, that is just what I needed to complete the Dugger cleanse this morning — Snake-hips-gyrating–pelvic-thrusting–pony-riding–twirly-whirly Tommy!

        Thank you!

      • Tiffany says:

@EL. Yes, the 9 year old. Just….. snot inducing heartbreaking.

      • PrincessMe says:

Damn, I’ll be watching that on repeat all day. Dancing Tom is awesome!

  8. Lilacflowers says:

Lunch is served on the veranda and in the meadow. Please do make use of the sun protection, those of you taking part in the fray in the meadow.

I am frantically working with a stylist for outfits for all these festivals. I’ll need two for TIFF. Tom is insisting that we will attend all the festivals showing his films but between Toronto, Zurich, Calgary, San Sebastián, and Austin, we will be unbelievably jet lagged.

He also starts the Monkey movie in October, which will leave little time for campaigning. Other than the print stuff he’s doing now. I’m hoping for fashion shoots because my husband is very pretty when wearing outlandish, high fashion stuff

  9. Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Humm… nice… we’re having some interesting scenes in ISTL? Though I don’t like country music much, (sorry country fans), maybe I’ll watch it…

    • NUTBALLS says:

Was it the topless woman and his unbuckled trousers that peaked your interest?? 😉

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

The unbuckled trousers definitely peaked my interest… 😉

      • mimif says:

The color combo of Solanacaea’s tomato and Nutballs’ (what is your avi, Sourdough?) avatar is positively festive.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Binkley from Bloom County, mimif… You know he’s back, right?? After 25 years, Berkeley Breathed has resurrected it. Steve Dallas is as shallow and douchy as ever and Binkley is still a nervous wreck with the closet full of anxieties. My life just got a whole lot better.

Nighty, is that Bob the Tomato?

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

@mimif… LOL, having trouble writing because I can’t stop laughing..

      • Lilacflowers says:

@mimif, we do aim for festive on the Tommy threads. Mimosa? Martini? Cheese-its?

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

@Nutballs, no, it’s just a picture from the net, but could be. Solanacaea (Latin) means Nightshade, a family of plants of which Belladona was included, that’s why I chose it. LadySlippers, who used to post here quite frequently (I do miss her a lot) , pointed out to me that potatoes and tomatoes were also in the same family of Nightshade plants, therefore I belonged to the Garden from Tom’s thread’s (so I chose a tomato, in honor of LadySlippers and because she invited me to be part of the Garden…)

      • mimif says:

Ahhh I can’t believe I didn’t catch that! And no, I didn’t know it had been resurrected, must catch up immediately. Can’t believe it’s been 25 years…*cue the I feel so olds*

@Lilac, YES PLEASE. One for each fist (I was born with three fists, true story.)

      • mimif says:

        *throws 🍆 at Solanacaea*

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Mimif, Colin is sending Channing in a pair of beige booty shorts to you with a pitcher of mimosas, a shaker of martinis, and a crate of cheeze-its. I hope that will keep your many fists happily occupied.

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

*thanks mimif… I’ll make a salad to go with the party downthread in the meadows… *

      • NUTBALLS says:

mimif, Berke is posting daily on his facebook page and also on twitter (@bloomcounty). He’s already throwing shade at Trump and Steve accidentally posted a video online of his singing wanker (“Li’l Mariachi”) wearing a tiny guitar and sombrero and the fallout is epic.

Feels like teen spirit. Mine, at least.

      • mimif says:

I’m dying, and not just because Lilac sent a Potato to my house with vats of booze and cheesy crisps. Must investigate immediately.

@Solanacaea, that’s an eggplant (nightshade) darlin! Tell me exactly what kind of salad you can make with those things….baba ganoush?

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Eggplant pasta salad? / Eggplant, tomato and mozzarela salad (look up Martha Stewart)

        http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/recipe-collections-favorites/popular-ingredients/easy-eggplant-recipes/eggplant-pasta-salad-1

      • Lilacflowers says:

Colin will have the chef prepare eggplant parmesan and ratatouille for dinner. And some grilled salmon, chicken, and steaks

      • mimif says:

Well honk my hooters! I had no idea. Full disclosure: I am not a fan of eggplants, minus how pretty they are. Sorry I threw one at you earlier.

      • mimif says:

@Lilac, you and your boytoys are going to make everyone phat.

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

@mimif no problem… at first I actually thought I was confusing the name, since English is not my mother tongue… 😀

You know, I used to ate some veggies but I decided to try on some different ways of cooking them and had a change of heart, i guess sometimes we don’t like a certain type of food because of the way we were taught to cook them

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

@mimif , it should have been ” I used to hate”, not “I used to ate”… LOL

      • Lilacflowers says:

@mimif, we may be phat but we won’t be fat. My boys are keen to give us all good workouts. Try dancing with that potato I sent you.

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Opps.. “I used to hate veggies ” not “I used to ate”…

    • ncboudicca says:

If it’s new country music that you don’t like, then don’t despair. It bears little resemblance to Hank’s classic sound.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Hank Williams was initlally classified as folk music because there was no country music classification. His sound was considered distinctive enough to give rise to a new country music category. However, country music has changed considerably in the past 50 years.

      • Maria A. says:

I’ve always considered Hank’s music to be Country Blues.

  10. Miss Jupitero says:

I was about to say that after all this Duggary, we desperately need a Hiddles post, and picturing him in a Gone With the Wind gown ala Vivien Leigh suits me perfectly. It restores my spirit. And that undone belt buckle couple with his golly gee smile…. Send me a martini please, Lilacflowers!

    • j.eyre says:

Hi Miss J – I was typing as you were posting or I would have just jumped on your coattails with my comment. Do you think the Picnic dress or the Curtains? I say the Picnic because he is just sassy enough to bare his shoulders before 5 (although I could totally see him ripping down the curtains in a fit of pique, the little drama queen.)

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Picnic all the way, darling Miss Jane! And a half-chomped cotton candy Marie Antoinette wig because i just like that idea.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Tom saves the day… again. He’s our Friday Morning Man!

I like the baggy tank on him. Makes me want to tear it off of him piece by piece rather vigorously.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Your martini is on its way, Chris Hemsworth is delivering it, wearing nothing but his new Red Soc cap.

I now have an image of my Tom wearing a long green dress with tassled fringe and a curtain rod like Carol Burnett

    • TotallyBiased says:

I’m definitely down with the Dragonfly King in hoops and a poke bonnet, or just screaming “as God is my witness, I’ll never go hungry again!”. 😉

  11. j.eyre says:

Well, if Fiddles needs some buzzing, I am here to help him do it.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Miss Jane, be sure and keep fresh batteries in the drawer of the nightstand. Just in case.

      • j.eyre says:

razzlefrazzlemerphifgarble… NUTBALLS! I was crafting my response to you when Mr. “I Only Work a Half Day on Fridays” Rochester walked up behind me and my far-too-large-for-privacy monitor and I had to convince him our discussion was about him.

Now my back hurts and I have to take another shower – THANKS A LOT!

      • NUTBALLS says:

You have that problem too?? It’s so difficult to keep my affair with Hiddles on the down low with Mr. Balls is lurking behind me.

We need to find a hobby for our husbands to enjoy… together. Skeet shooting perhaps??

  12. Beach girl says:

I keep seeing conflicting reports of just where SI will start filming in Oct. Fingers crossed it’s still Kauai as I will be on island mid Oct, north shore. If anyone has location confirmation please let me know. thanks.

  13. A.Key says:

What, he’s a crazy alcoholic bitch?

  14. Leah says:

For some reason I’m picturing Tom wearing the dress with the curtain rods still stuck in it that Carol Burnett wore when she did a Gone With the Wind sketch on her show. Entertaining!

  15. P'enny says:

i read somewhere that on Twitter, ISTL and High Rise are blowing all over films off the twitter- map as far as gossip and buzz is concerned.
I find myself acting has any other actor had two films being shown at world-leading film festivals and be so far removed from one another that the audience could sue for whiplash? That is going to create it’s own buzz, and i will have no nails left by the end of September.

  16. koko says:

Tom Hiddleston being compared to Vivien Leigh.
    Now I’ve read everything.
Love her performance, still not going to see ISTL.
I will read all your glowing reviews instead.

  17. novaleenationstate says:

I was part of a test audience for this film recently – he’s amazing in it and so is Olsen. Their chemistry is ridiculous.

    • et alors says:

How was his singing, if you don’t mind me asking? Did he sound like Hank Williams or a close enough approximation?

    • NUTBALLS says:

Let’s get the important questions out of the way, shall we?

      1. Is there nudity? More specifically, is Tom nekkid?
      2. Are there hot sex between him and EO or his flings?
      3. Do I need to bring tissues? Not for crying, mind you.

      • P'enny says:

        lol ditto

      • masy says:

        lol You’re the best!!

      • NUTBALLS says:

I really need a proofreader when I change plural to singular. *Are* should be *Is*… Geez.

      • Heather says:

        lol!

Yes, did Pensacola woman make the cut or did that poor woman get all naked under that fur coat for no reason? 😀

      • NUTBALLS says:

Heather, with rehearsals and multiple takes, I can find reasons to get naked and pretend screw Hiddles, even if it ends up on the cutting room floor. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

The actress is listed on the imdb cast list so, unless there is some last minute editing, she probably made the final film in some way. Whether she’ll be naked or not is another question.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Nice to get a positive report. Thank you!

    • jammypants says:

      How’s the accent?

    • Heather says:

Is Tom good on his own and how is the singing?

Still not going to see it, but I will probably splurge for a dvd later and watch his bits. I like his bits.

    • whatevs says:

This comment is weird because its almost word for word as ive seen posted on other forums, there seems to be just this one person giving this good report and focusing on the chemistry between the two of them. I havn’t seen any other as positive reviews as this one only vague comments about editing and length of movie. Seems to me someone is really pushing the “chemistry” between THEO, *waves* Hi Luke! and as on this does not elaborate more on the story.

      • Heather says:

Hmm. You could be on to something there, whatevs. *suspicious*

        Dear Luke,
I don’t care about Tom and EO’s “ridiculous chemistry”. The most ridiculous thing about them is their PR. (and possibly her shoes…). Please stop pushing them as a couple.
Now on to the important stuff – HOW IS THE SINGING AND WILL HE BE NAKED???
        Yours suspiciously,
        Heather.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Heather, I have a strong suspicion that all the “ridiculous PR” was laying the groundwork for THEO to come *out* at TIFF. Clear your calendar, ’cause the comment threads are destined to be epic and time-consuming!

      • masy says:

May be that’s from the Olsen’s team. I think they’re trying to make her performance the same level as Tom’s though she’s very mediocre actress.

      • Heather says:

@Nutballs well if that was groundwork… ugh. As much as I have no desire to see the film, I don’t want any of these shenanigans to overshadow it either. And Tom has two films to promote. This is going to get so awkward.

He will be in a nice suit, or at the very least a suit he makes look good. I can focus on that… *inhales* *exhales* lol.

  18. Chef Grace says:

According to IMBD Samuel L. Jackson is in the movie, SI now. The list of actors is growing!
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3731562/

    • Lilacflowers says:

And Tom Wilkinson and John C. Reilly. That’s a rather strong cast; although still predominantly male.

  19. TotallyBiased says:

Looks like SPC is choosing to avoid a possible conflict in Best Actor campaigns (presuming they ever planned one for Mr. H.)
    http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/sony-pictures-classics-add-don-cheadles-miles-ahead-to-its-slate-20150805
Miles Ahead is going on the 2016 release slate.

    • et alors says:

I’m taking this with a grain of salt until SPC announces a release date. While a respectable source, she’s the only one, other than GoldDerby, who’s reporting this.

      • TotallyBiased says:

I think that’s a perfectly reasonable response. Perhaps they are still considering their options.

    • NUTBALLS says:

As much as I want to see Miles Ahead, I was hoping Tom wouldn’t be pitted against Cheadle this awards season. All things being equal, Don could be hard to beat.

    • Lilacflowers says:

A great deal can happen between now and February but Tom really isn’t going to be very available for awards campaigning.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Weird to say this, concerning we haven’t actually seen any IStL or HR footage–but my wish list includes simply some high-profile nominations for our Dragonfly King (SAG, Golden Globes, (dare I say) Oscar.) I’m not thinking so far ahead as WINS. But if Miles Ahead and IStL are out at the same time, the field just for nominations is that much tougher. Then again, I haven’t seen any footage of Miles Ahead, either!

      • Lilacflowers says:

A Golden Globe nomination in the Comedy/Musical category might be a possibility but I prefer to wait until I’ve actually seen a movie before deciding whether I think something is deserving.

      • TotallyBiased says:

True, true—if awards were nominated/given based solely on ability, I’d be right there with you, Lilacflowers.
I’m probably just all hormonal over having to wait until NOVEMBER 27th for IStL.
        Sigh.
        And that’s best case scenario.
My nightmare is if I can’t find it at my nearest metropolitan area and have to drive hundreds of miles to see it. Cause I will. But it might make me cranky.
There will need to be liquor.
Lots and lots of liquor (thought not anytime near driving–I’m not a Total idiot. 😀 )

      • Lilacflowers says:

@TotallyBiased, oh, I do feel for you. I never know what to expect from “limited release.” Sometimes that just means “select cities” and Boston is very often classified as a “select city” but sometimes it is not. And with a “limited release, select cities” designation, it is difficult to predict which local theater will have it. Example last year’s Theory of Everything. I know some places did not get that film until after the New Year, some around Thanksgiving but we had it in October and it played at the two local art houses but also in the big mainstream chain theater in the city – but not the suburban branches of that chain until later. Whiplash was everywhere around here for months. But Still Alice and the Marion Cotillard film played in only one theater, both starting in late January, which was when Thor hit. Yes, they named the monster snowstorm Thor. And Thor was followed by lots more storms, dumping over 100 inches of snow on us. So, it was a bit difficult to make it to that one theater, which is a hike from the nearest subway stop in the best of times. So, I do feel for you. We will drink with you.

Raising glass in advance (hoping that a November 27th release date isn’t a bad sign in the Boston Weather Almanac)

      • NUTBALLS says:

Now that I realize it’s a limited release, I doubt I’ll be seeing ISTL over Thanksgiving weekend. Good thing there will be plenty of movies out that *will* woo me to the cinema in the meantime.

  20. raincoaster says:

    Um. Vivien Leigh was bipolar.

  21. Lilacflowers says:

James Purefoy (swoon) has posted some High-Rise release dates on his Facebook page. September 2016 for Germany (why so far away?) Sometime in 2016 for France. 2015 but no specific month for Britain and no US date yet but he says there will be one soon.

Sara Dee tweeted that there was a cast and crew screening of High-Rise last night.

    • et alors says:

Lilacflowers, I don’t think James Purefoy has a verified Facebook page. I saw the dates on fan-run page, but it looks like they pulled that info from IMDB. I don’t know that those are really “official” release dates.

  22. et alors says:

Here’s the tweet about the High-Rise cast and crew screening. Sounds like the movie was intense.

    https://twitter.com/1stsaradee/status/635383641456156672

    • NUTBALLS says:

That tweet does nothing to make me want to see High Rise. There’s enough real life to leave me depressed, let alone dystopian fiction highlighting the depravity of mankind.

Here’s hoping for more lovely still shots to enjoy.

Of course, there’s Chicken Little with his “The sky is falling!” hand-wringing in the responses…

    • waitwhat says:

@et alors – I saw that comment! I was thinking along the lines of Eeyore, but Chicken Little’s even better for him. He’s backed off on the Awards Watch board, since people have pointed out that the Elgin has all the Platform films.

      • et alors says:

I think he has a perfectly valid opinion, @waitwhat, but he reacts far too quickly and in extremes. Just chill, dude. Seems harmless and somewhat knowledgeable, though. I wish that other person hadn’t responded to him like that because it’ll just reinforce the negative opinions people have of Hiddleston “fangirls” who are overzealous in their defense of Tom.

      • Waitwhat says:

He does have some good points, you’re right – but you nailed it with going off too quickly, and then backing away. He was also the one who was immediately sure SPC would dump Tom & ISTL and now is trying to work his brain around why it’s still getting promoted.

@Pinky, the concern is that the Ryerson is not considered by some to be one of the main theatres. However, the Elgin is now limited because it’s hosting the Platform series (why High-Rise is there), so some of the premieres will have to be moved elsewhere. And someone else pointed out the fact that it’s opening weekend is a good sign.

The Ryerson did host the premieres of The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Days, Juno… I think it’s probably more logistics than anything.

@Heather – I’m with you. Bring on the vodka.

      • Anon222 says:

2 of 3 SPC’s movies are premiering at Ryerson, makes me think there’s still a little hard feeling between Sony Classics and TIFF because of last year. SPC & Weinstein clashed with TIFF last year big time because of TIFF’s Telluride policy. Weinstein doesn’t show up with its big guns this year to TIFF at all. Truth got Kate Blanchett & Robert Redford, is placed at Elgin. Son of Saul has a lot of buzz from Cannes, and pretty hot for a Oscars’ Foreign movie slot, but it’s also premiering at Ryerson. TIFF putting it on Ryerson has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. Whether ISTL is good or not we will know soon enough, no need to worry just because of a venue.

    • NUTBALLS says:

One of our very own answered Chicken Little… Thank you for keeping it reals, EllBee!

    • Heather says:

I’m not aware who the chicken little guy is, but I am marking my calendar with those dates. 🙂

Looks like I’m going to have an Alcohol Fuelled Friday for ISTL. And only a couple of days to recover before High Rise.

    • PINKY says:

I don’t know much about film festivals, award predictions etc: so why is this a bad sign about ISTL? If you don’t mind explaining

  24. Beach girl says:

@colliderfrosty: for @twhiddleston fans going to #TIFF15. I SAW THE LIGHT premieres at Ryerson on 11th at 6pm. HIGH-RISE at Elgin on 13th at 9:30pm.

Let’s see if this goes–there’s some discussion about what SPC is planning on this podcast.

    • NUTBALLS says:

      Thanks TeeBee! Listening now…

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Couldn’t get that to work.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Lilac–the podcast link at the bottom of the page wouldn’t work for you, or the page wouldn’t load?
You might try googling pieces of the title for a different link???

      • NUTBALLS says:

It didn’t work for me until I clicked on the “Pod” icon next to the hyperlinked header.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The podcast itself wouldn’t work but after at least half a dozen tries, it finally did.

    • NUTBALLS says:

They just said that Sony seems to be deciding what to do with MA since all they’re saying is that it’s premiering at NYFF. They said it would have a 2016 release, but no one knows if it’ll be a Still Alice type of wide release or with a qualifying limited release in December.

This podcast put “Creed” on my radar. The huz will go see that one with me.

      • Lilacflowers says:

None of them know what Sony is doing with Miles Ahead so they should stop speculating while saying nothing and casting doubt about other films until Sony actually does something with Miles Ahead.

Michael B. Jordan shirtless. That is all.

  26. Beach girl says:

Just saw something on Tumbler re Crimson Peak on the TIFF schedule?? Anyone else hear this????

    • jammypants says:

If true, I REALLY wish I was at TIFF. All his movies in one place!

      • et alors says:

@jammypants, it’s listed as a Special Presentation on tiffr but without any showtimes. It’s not on the official schedule that was released today, either. Maybe they’re still trying to work something out with Legendary since the word after the Venice Film Festival announcements came out was that Legendary doesn’t want the movie shown at any festivals.

      • waitwhat says:

        @beachgirl @et alors @jammy
Guillermo del Toro starts his Gothic film Master Classes tomorrow at the Lightbox. I wonder if they’ll make an announcement in conjunction with those?

      • et alors says:

Welp, no CP at TIFF. From the @i_love_tiffr Twitter account:

We know there are a bunch of issues on the site right now, we’re working to resolve them all. And yes, we’ll remove Crimson Peak!

    • Lilacflowers says:

I feel the need for a long weekend in Toronto in early September with my husband Tom

      • jammypants says:

        same

      • Velvet, Crushed says:

        Come!

      • Lilacflowers says:

I did provide links way up above to the outfits I will be wearing to the premieres of the films. I didn’t think I would get to wear my Crimson Peak ensemble so soon. So excited! I really like that one. I also like the one I’ll be wearing to High Rise – I’m concerned about animal safety in the film, hence, the antlers, and, of course, they do symbolize Loki. We can never get away from Loki.

      • Velvet, Crushed says:

All so excellent, @Lilacflowers. Also, à propos something completely irrelevant, “I use antlers in all of my decorating” is one of my favourite lyrics ever, and so I feel the highly feminized application of a presumably fake adornment is perfect.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Velvet, Crushed, OMG! I love that lyric! I’m now going to have the voice of Gaston singing that line in my head for the rest of the day and it makes me happy.

  27. Dara says:

Took a quick glance at the online TIFF schedule, and the ISTL showing on Friday 11th will be a red-carpet premiere (Tuxedo Tom! – or at least Nice Suit Tom) and the High-Rise screening on Sunday 13th has a Q&A afterward. Does anyone know if those get shown online somewhere?

    • NUTBALLS says:

I recall last year there was a Q&A for TIG, so we might be in luck if someone in the audience will film it.

Wasn’t that the one where the lady said something really inappropriate to Bendy and he mumbled something about being “taken”?

    • Heather says:

Someone is bound to film it. Or at the very least take sneaky photos.

  28. Beach girl says:

The TIFF posting re CP was a boo boo. They said something about problems with their website and apologized. How do you accidentally mention a film not originally scheduled on a film festival website?? Maybe I don’t have the whole picture….

    • Heather says:

Odd. Not very professional either, but mistakes happen.. perhaps wishful thinking on the website maintainers part, lol.

    • NUTBALLS says:

At this point, I feel like I’ve seen and heard so much about CP that I don’t think it’s a great loss. I feel like I’ve already seen that movie with all the trailers that are out. The other two movies are the ones in need of some promotion.

      • TotallyBiased says:

And this is why I’ve avoided watching the trailers and minimized reading ANYTHING about that movie. Spoilers are waiting to trip you up around every corner! (Yeah, I’m side-eyeing YOU, Funko pops.)

      • Lilacflowers says:

        The Funko pops ARE adorable.

      • Heather says:

Aww yes, I’m waiting for the Funko pops to pop up on Amazon! (it’s my online store of choice). I would love a little Thomas Sharpe. So cute.

I am starting to think CP promotion could be turned into a good drinking game – take a shot any time “Gothic Romance” is mentioned by Guillermo or the rest of the cast. I’d be on the floor in 20 minutes.

      • NUTBALLS says:

On the subject of drinking games, I think a good one would involve taking a shot every time Thomas says “amazing”. He sure loves that word.

      • Heather says:

Haha, yes. Or “Thrilling”. Or “Proud”. 😀

This man is not good for my alcohol consumption levels..

      • TotallyBiased says:

Is ‘uncontrollably excited’ still in the mix, d’you think?

      • waitwhat says:

Not sure, TB, but “privilege” or any variation should be included here.

  29. Lilacflowers says:

Skull Island seems to be absorbing the Straight Outta Compton cast

    • et alors says:

There’s going to be an SOC reunion, a War Horse reunion, and possibly an Avengers reunion. I hope we get news on some female cast member additions soon, though.

  30. et alors says:

Soda Pictures has picked up Canadian rights to High-Rise. I wonder who’s going to get the US rights?

  31. Dara says:

ISTL will be at another Canadian film festival – the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax, September 22nd

    http://atlantic.festivalgenius.com/2014/films/isawthelight_markabraham_atlantic2015

    • Lilacflowers says:

And a friend’s grandmother just posted on Facebook that she got tickets to that. She probably has never heard of Tom but she’s a huge Hank Williams fan as many of her family in Nova Scotia are. She’s all excited that they’ve made a Hank Williams movie and that she’ll be among the first to see it.

  32. et alors says:

There’s a pretty good multi-page spread on CP in the upcoming Empire Magazine issue that has interviews with GDT, Tom, Mia, and Jessica. You can find it on Torilla’s Weibo. GDT is hilarious. He says about a bedroom:

“This is the bonking room,” he cackles. “It gets a lot of mileage!”

Also, apparently, Empire confirms High-Rise for the London Film Festival.
