Nicki Minaj’s VMA beef with Miley Cyrus was real, multiple sources say

Miley Cyrus

I gotta admit to still being entertained at how Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus in a huge way at the VMAs. Miley was clearly rattled, and she should have been. She was pretty darn rude to Nicki about the VMAs snub, especially while lecturing Nicki about “the statistics” of racism. MTV cut Nicki’s mic once they realized what was happening, and it happened fast, which makes people wonder if this was a planned stunt.

The internet and general public still seem divided on whether the call-out moment was staged. People are throwing out professional wrestling analogies and pointing out how Eminem and Sacha Baron Cohen staged a VMA feud one year. This crap happens with MTV, but I have no problems believing Nicki was seriously upset with Miley for belittling her as “not polite” and “angry.” Miley believes people should have love in their hearts at all times, but Nicki was legitimately upset.

Now come conflicting reports about the onstage interaction. MTV put out word that the beef is completely real. Us Weekly also takes the same route with quotes from an insider:

Not an act! Nicki Minaj wasn’t kidding when she confronted 2015 VMAs hostess Miley Cyrus during the live broadcast on Sunday, Aug. 30. After the “Anaconda” rapper called the pop star a “bitch” for talking about her in the press, some people wondered whether the onstage tiff was part of a pre-planned bit between them. But a source tells Us Weekly that there was nothing fake about Minaj’s rage.

“Nicki was livid with Miley and decided to air her feelings onstage,” the insider tells Us of the “Truffle Butter” hitmaker, 32, who was angry over an interview Cyrus gave to the New York Times. “The anger was very real and not a pre-planned bit at all.”

In fact, the source says, MTV staffers “had to be sure Nicki and Miley didn’t cross paths for the rest of the evening because they were legitimately worried about a confrontation happening.”

[From Us Weekly]

See, I believe this is the case. Nicki is excellent at holding grudges, and Miley didn’t recover for a few minutes. Yet People says the whole thing was a game, and “Nicki was joking. You could see her laughing toward the end.” The thing is, Nicki can smile while she’s angry. There was a tiny flash of a smile, yes, but it didn’t look like a happy one. She simply looked pleased at Miley’s reaction. Still, this is all a mystery!

The era of real musicians is truly dead.

    • LB says:

No no! We still have Adele and a few others, plus all the smaller acts. This year was just the pits for pop music.

      • manda says:

omg, yes! yes, it was. the songs this summer were all awful to just ok, but adele’s album is coming out in november (hopefully)

    • Naya says:

I hate when people say things like this. There has always been meh music. And I mean always, going back to harp players in the middle ages. That stuff always tends to rise to the top because its formularic and safe for liseners, its always been so. Once in awhile something thoughtful and provocative will penetrate but then pretty soon a bunch of people will imitate the sound and content and you end up back where you started. If you are interested in more authentic sounds, there are plenty of spaces to find it. In fact, thanks to the net, it has never in all of history been easier to find “real musicians”. They are there, I’m listening to one right now.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Seriously. If you’re looking at pop acts entirely designed for casual and easy listening and muttering about true music being dead you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Plenty of good music still out there and music has stayed the same for eternity, there is always someone who’ll suggest it’s all downhill past the point of return.

      • Josefa says:

Thank you so much. I’ve always been saying this.

And you know what’s funny? 10 years from now people will look at Miley and Nicki and think they were real divas who actually knew their thing, in contrast to the pop singers of that day. Nowadays people remember ’80s Madonna as an innovative and provocative singer with amazing stage pressence. In the actual ’80s she was a slut with no depth who came to ruin music forever.

There’s hundreds of talented musicians out there making very good music. A few of them even performed at the VMAs, but nobody talked about them.

      • lylaoooo says:

MTV is a joke !!! but there´s great great musicians outthere, you just not going to find them on MTV

    • Leah says:

Not quite.Bruno Mars won at VMAs. He gets no attention though because he is not faux controversial like Miley. Still sells more cds than Miley though.

    • Alexandra says:

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE is fortunately still with us!

    • Wren says:

It sure seems like it when you look at pop culture and awards shows. There’s plenty of very talented folks out there but you have to look for them. Mainstream “pop stars” are rarely what I’d consider true musicians, they are performers first and foremost. There’s a difference. Not to say a musician cannot be a performer but a performer doesn’t necessarily have to be a musician.

The media is like an infant, its attention is captured by whatever is brightly colored and in its face. If you want real talent, step outside the nursery.

    • Bridget says:

So what you’re saying is, you’re worried this feud will taint your future listening of Bangerz?

      • paola says:

I had to google what Bangerz was!! LMAO

        HODOR!
Bridget there is a new amazing theory in Jon snow. Mimif passed it on to me. Curious?

      • Bridget says:

HODOR! Is it the Twin one? Aside from that, I’m kind of trying to steer away from too much GOT stuff because I want to have it feel fresh when it comes out in April (or if some miracle that book comes out). I also have this policy about movie trailers for things I really want to see 🙂

I wouldn’t have remembered the name Bangerz if it hadn’t been referenced recently with the Miley shenanigans. I don’t necessarily think that all music is going downhill, but I am saddened at how heavily major corporations now play in the choosing of our popular music. Fortunately there are more and more avenues for amateurs to get their music out, but I’ll admit to not wanting to wade through a bunch of stuff (cause I’m kind of lazy).

      • paola says:

Yes the twin theory! GoT (game of tweens) theories get crazier by the minute but this one was really good and i hope it’s true.
If it’s true though Martins will change the plot just for the sake of it.
        To get the susrprise effect!

Yes I want GoT to be fresh for me too.. but April is far far away!

Miley and Nicky though… I don’t know which side I would take.. I just don’t care enough I guess. They’re both trashy and fed by a corrupted industry.
VMAs are now good only for a laugh.

      • Bridget says:

Miley vs Nicki over the VMAs… not exactly the great debate here.

The crappy part is that we’re getting to football season, and GRRM famously doesn’t write during football. It’s absurd.

And where would the other twin have been this whole time? Still stuck in the Tower of Joy?

      • paola says:

        We’ve already met the twin…

I tried to post you the link but it won’t go through moderation… you can find it on huffington post and this is the title: This New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Theory On Jon Snow Changes Everything

      • Bridget says:

Man, that would be kind of a letdown if it was her!

Please let this next book not suck!

    • Veronica says:

Actually, I think it’s better than ever. Programs like iTunes, Pandora, etc. make it way easier to discover and support indie and non-mainstream artists than it ever was when I was a kid. There’s a lot of albums I wouldn’t own if they’d existed pre-Internet.

Media is dominated by these pop acts because they make headlines and big money. But that market is restrictive BECAUSE the Internet has democratized music in a way it never was before. Before mp3s, you could sell entire albums off of one song. The advent of singles has made it a lot harder to sell as consistently as before.

    • Katija says:

Honestly… the “bubblegum crap pop” was so, so much better in “my day.”

Remember the Chris Rock-hosting, Radio City Music Hall days? That show used to have better production values than the Grammys. Now it’s like the producers fell asleep.

I remember when Britney stripping down to a bodysuit was “shocking.” And let’s face it, that was REAL dancing, REAL performance, with Broadway-level choreography and the perfect mix of art and sexuality.

      *Le sigh*

    • Katherine says:

Has been for a while. Real musicians are few and far between.

  2. cleveland girl says:

Every single one of Mileys outfits got on my last nerve.

  3. Talie says:

Of course it was staged! The only thing that wasn’t was Kanye’s whacky speech — which seemed to throw Taylor Swift off.

You will not find many authentic moments like you used to see in the 90s.

    • MrsB says:

Right. I’m not even sure why it’s news that MTV has inside sources saying the feud was real. Does anybody expect them to come out and say “hahaha it was all a set-up. Gotcha!” They have pretty obvious reasons for wanting to make this look real.

    • Mia V. says:

Missing the times when Courtney Love threw things at Madonna during an interview.

    • Anna says:

You can tell by the fear on Miley’s face that this was not planned. She looked terrified when Nicki said that.
I don’t know why people are surprised about Nicki. Rappers confront their “enemies” all the time, a big part of rap is people writing about their feuds. If I was Nicki I would’ve said a lot worse because what Miley said was uncalled for.
Some of the comments here sound like Salon’s racist tweet about Nicki.

      • Karma says:

        Nah, it was completely staged.

A gossip dude already spilled the beans that the feud was loaded into the telepromter.

Nikki is just a lame chick who picked a fight with Taylor and then back-tracked on it and claimed it wasn’t about her. The only other skinny girl in her award categories.

Never mind her real body type is actually more like Taylor’s. She bought the curves that she is claiming to fight for, and those bought curves made her famous, negating another part of her argument.

Nikki just wanted to create a media hub-bub for the award show. She got it. But the back-tracking and changing the goal posts, negates any true meaning she tried to later ascribe to it.

And picking a fake fight with Miley is just as lame as picking one with Taylor. Neither are hard chicks, it’s like picking a fight with the Easter Bunny.

  4. Mzizkrizten says:

What I want to know is what was up with Nicki’s baby voice when she started thanking her fans? Is that how she talks? It seemed condescending to me. She sounded just like a baby or a Duggar woman LOL.

    • original kay says:

if you go to the thread yesterday, I asked this question, though phrased very differently. I got some excellent information and learned something new 🙂

    • jenn12 says:

Part emotion and part drama queen. She liked the effect it had, particularly on Miley, whom she threw off completely.

    • marie says:

it’s her “Harajuku Barbie” ( one of her alter egos) voice

    • Mytbean says:

She is made of insecurity, flippant attitude, and condescending baby talk covered in fake butts and resting bitchface. The woman seems constantly on the look out for something to be offended by and be passive aggressive about.

Not a fangirl of her nor Cyrus really, but of the two, I think I choose Miley simply because half the time she’s just a harmless pothead. Nick, on the other hand, looks like she’d get physical over trivial things.

  5. mia girl says:

    Still not buying it…

  6. Katydid20 says:

I’m still torn. I can see it being real, but I wouldn’t put it past any of them to fake this for the publicity. Either way I bet MTV is loving all the attention.

  7. Sugar says:

Blind Gossip says it was planned and that MTV knew all about it.

    • Bianca says:

Yeah but they never said Miley was aware Nicki was coming for her. Honestly, I wish Nicki had called out Taylor instead. Can’t stand her. Apparently Taylor farted on the red carpet during a fashion police interview. Buzzfeed has it! Look it up, it’s so funny. They claim it was a sound microphone but with the look on Taylor’s face…. I think she farted. Lol

  8. apple says:

isn’t it amazing that the only performance that truly seemed sincere was Kanye’s rambling acceptance speech?

    • Dawn says:

I doubt KanYe West has said anything truly sincere in the last ten years. He was high, he smoked a joint and he sounded like Butthead up there. But he has gotten what he wanted and that is attention and that’s it. When KanYe West opens his mouth all I hear is bla bla bla and I wish to god I had a joint.

  9. Aussie girl says:

Lordy, I never want to hear the words truffle butter again. Last time it was on this site I looked it up & I got educated( it’s not something that goes on toast!)Lol. Never the less I think this was legit.

    • Marty says:

Ha, YES! It’s disgusting, but the beat on that song is so good!

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Pro tip: Urban Dictionary is pretty much a site to fuck with folks who don’t know real urban slang.

The truffle butter definition was made after the song, lol, and everytime I see folks cite the definition…

Please do not go on Urban Dictionary like its Merriam’s, that’s not how it works.

  10. Stef Leppard says:

Did they cut her mic? It looks more like she stepped away from it. Plus, why would they cut it if they had a time delay and could bleep her?

  11. doofus says:

at first I thought “stunt” but then I watched the whole thing…and the way Minaj looked, with the narrowed eyes and the way she said it, I don’t think it was planned and she said it quick bc she KNEW they’d cut her mike. she really looked like she wanted to get physical with Miley and Miley’s reaction was also, IMO, genuine. she looked almost scared but definitely had a “uh oh, what’s happening, what do I do” look.

neither of those two are good enough at acting to pull that off.

    • Kaye says:

I watched the video of Miley’s reaction, and I would swear she got pale (below the blush on her cheeks). Might have been the light, but she appeared shocked to me.

  12. L says:

I’m sleuthing it out like Sherlock Holmes over here (because it’s more fun than getting ready for work on a Tuesday): Miley Cyrus can’t fucking act, so I doubt she was faking the surprise on her end. Nicki also seemed genuinely angry (no idea if she can act). On the other hand, as Laineygossip pointed out, the camera guy was ready to cut zoom in response to whatever Nicki was saying. Some of you may disagree, but to me the fact that MTv cut nicki’s mike also seemed real. Lastly, Miley’s little statement about the media manipulating shit (snort) sounded really rehearsed to me.

So, my theory: there was a little bit planned with Miley Cyrus and nicki Minaj, but nicki went COMPLETELY off script! I bet they planned to reference Miley’s quotes and nicki agreed to play along but took the chance to speak up. Isn’t that more likely than the faked/not faked binary?

I hope you were all entertained! Back to real life responsibilities 😉

    • Aussie girl says:

@L, I like your detective work and think your theory make sense and is spot on. Maybe you should quit your day job 😁

    • Wren says:

I agree. I think there was a “thing” planned but Nicki didn’t stick to the script and decided to vent her true feelings. Also I thought Miley’s response didn’t quite fit with what Nicki said, like she was responding to something slightly different. It didn’t quite make sense in context.

I think it went like this. They rehearsed the bit, the camera was all prepared to pan over for the reaction and Miley had a line at the ready. Then Nicki went HAM (knowing her mic would be cut since that was NOT was she was supposed to say), while Miley stammered out her rehearsed line because she didn’t have anything else. Camera caught it all as planned.

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ugh to the music, the outfits, the language, the rudeness, the coarseness, the immaturity. Making the crowd say “marijuana” – oooooooooo, we said a bad word. I’m just too old for this. Get off my lawn.

  14. Laura says:

More importantly – can we please discuss Miley’s stylist COMPLETELY RIPPING OFF Discount Universe?

  15. tifzlan says:

I just find it funny that Miley pulled the “media manipulates everything!!!” card. THAT’S how i know this was not a planned stunt. If it was, the comeback would have been much more “wittier” and well thought out than the cliched bad media! fallback.

    • wonderwoman21 says:

I agree. If it had been planned i think Miley would have had a wittier or edgier comment.

    • Jade says:

I agree. Miley’s reply sounded desperate and she did not own it. I doubt this was planned.

I can’t stand both of them and I dislike both their videos but I genuinely think Nicki has more talent.

  16. K says:

Mtv would totally stage this but I don’t think it was. I think nicki was smiling because she knew she shook miley to her core and embarrassed her and she liked it. Let’s be real nicki had to little pop princesses come at her and she won both battles without having to try very hard. The world shot Taylor down- HARD. And she just called out Miley a little and suddenly Miley wasn’t so big that had to feel good.

MTV staged the Kayne and Taylor thing, I think they figured there could be an awkward thing were nicki wouldn’t throw to Miley or something but I don’t think they knew she’d do that and I don’t think they were prepped for it. The gif of Miley’s reaction shows it. It was funny.

  17. Whatwhatnot says:

    .

  18. Whatwhatnot says:

Oh please with this HS bull. If Nicki was really about that life, she would have stepped up to Miley backstage if she really wanted some. Instead she passive-aggressively calls her out in front of an audience on a stage about 50 ft away. It’s one attention wh*re vs another. I have no dog in this fight because they are both annoying and marginally talented.
Also Blind Gossip said this was scripted by MTV, except it was originally supposed to be Nicki v Taylor, but Taylors camp wanted none of it with their little princess so the producers decided to turn it over to Miley (who wasn’t made aware of it at the time, for the element of surprise)

    • Clockworkwit says:

Here’s the thing though. What is “about that life” to you? I think Nicki brought the “street” to the stage. Why would she physically fight Miley? Why not put her ass on front street “in the media” like Miley did to her? She gave her the smack down in the appropriate arena. This wasn’t physical altercation material. Nicki put some bass in her voice and shook Miley to the core…with words. Same weapon Miley chose, but Nicki swung hers better. Folks like to play hard in the safety of an interview, but look what happens when they are put on the spot.

      • Whatwhatnot says:

She was sure acting like she wanted a fight saying “what’s good, Miley” and waving her hands like she was expecting Miley to step to her. That’s how we roll in NYC, and you don’t motion that way asking “what’s good” if you can’t back it up and without expecting a fight. Interestingly enough she never stepped up to Lil Kim that way even when their beef was at it peak. EVER. She knows who to talk to that way and who not to, and where to do it.

      • jenn12 says:

Nicki isn’t afraid to say it to Miley’s face, unlike Miley, who hides behind Twitter, the media, and then MTV, who of course cut off NICKI’S mic. And I’m not a fan of either one. Nor Taylor.

      • snowflake says:

Exactly what not not. Nikki’s not gonna step to anyone who would wipe the floor with her butt. Mileys perfect, gives it more attention, but mileys not gonna step to her.

    • K says:

Why would she fight her? That isn’t going to end well for nicki where this did? And not everyone is violent. And what life are you talking about? Not wanting some spoiled little girl to tell her about what it’s like to be a minority? I don’t know nicki or really pay much attention to her but I think it’s safe to say she is about that life. Please Nicki handled it in a way that had maximum impact.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

      LMAO seriously?

So now you think Nicki needed to beat Miley down backstage to prove her blackness or streetness? Why? When what she did achieved the exact same effect without making her into a stereotype to be banned.

Lord the way folks equate thuggery with being black…

  19. Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

Oh for goodness sake, just give both of them the pacifiers and change their diappers… Too much attention to lil’kids…

  20. Marty says:

There is another part that people aren’t talking about which makes me thinks it’s real. When Miley started to respond with her “you know how the media likes to start s**t” they cut Nicki’s mic so she went to the edge of the stage closer to Miley and started yelling “Don’t play with me, bitch!”. There are gifs of it floating around.

Nicki was ready to go, can’t say that I blame her.

    • Whatwhatnot says:

Eh. Like I said up thread, Nicki is from Queens and she knows how to “step” if she really wanted to scrap with Miley. She could have caught her backstage or after the show but there aren’t cameras rolling to document her attention grabbing stunts. Instead she does it on a stage with plenty of people/security to get in between them if it really popped off. Petty and staged. Nicki is all bark, no bite.

      • Marty says:

Yeah but it Nicki had got into anything physical with Miley she would be feeding into the “angry black women” trope. She had to clapback Miley on a public forum to let her know she was wrong on those comments.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Smh, you think it’s realistic that she’d roll backstage and start popping Miley?

Seriously? Like her or hate her she’s clearly worked hard to achieve her dreams of being a rapper and been completely upfront with climbing her way to the top and creating that legendary title for herself.

Doing what you suggest would make her into a lame weakling, we all know Miley can’t fight and she didn’t touch Nicki. Anything more than words would have made her into the villain and completely destroyed her point.

No one should approach life with that mentality.

  21. Shitler says:

How anyone could think this was staged I dunno. Watch that clip..there was genuine venom in Nicki’s face/voice. I half expected her to rush Miley. And Miley’s super lame comeback? Also people say Miley was cussing Nicki out back stage post confrontation.

  22. PrincessMe says:

Good grief, I would not want to be standing front row in that audience. Goodness.

  23. FingerBinger says:

Nicki Minaj is too old for all of this.

  24. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I’m always baffled by the people who say “It’s fake.” about every single thing as if that will somehow make everything in the world make sense.

So you mean the same woman who publicaly called MTV out for not respecting black acts would sign up for a little drama with them so that…what happens? She gets nominated for LESS awards? She plays ANGRY BLACK WOMAN for White Media?

This is exactly what Nicki was talking about and people still can’t see the twigs for the branches, let alone the forest for the trees. MTV DOESNT REWARD BLACK ARTISTS. There is no boon to Nicki to play their game because even when it’s Beyonce or Rihanna they still don’t reward black acts. THAT’S why she called Miley out and had a fun ol time doing it. So many black acts have stopped coming to the VMA’s because they know the game.

What happened folks was the fake drama MTV tried to scratch up by getting Miley to host got a little real drama in the form of a woman done with the bullshit and ready to make sure everyone on an international stage knew it.

PS. Funny how Miley got extra appropriatey for her big night.

    • jwoolman says:

If Nicki really wanted to make a statement, she could have refused to participate in the whole event and explained why. She can do that all over the net and YouTube and the inevitable interviews and sound bites. It’s not as though she doesn’t have a chance to speak her mind to millions of people in so many other ways.

Instead, she agreed to participate and then engaged in rude, childish behavior to impress the other kids smirking by the lockers… She’s old enough to know better, she’s not in junior high any more.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

        I have to disagree.

There are things that require you to show up and say something in person. Writing letters, putting out YouTube Videos and writing statements on Twitter do have their place but it’s not the same exposure and platform. By going physically to the VMAS and making her comment Nicki got the same platform as Miley to call her out and clapback on the VMA’s on MTV’s dime.

Would she have gotten the same exposure if she’d written a statement? Doubtful, and Miley would have continued to be rewarded with no challenge. By going there Nicki took the shine off Miley’s moment and gave herself a response equal to the person hired to host the awards.

I think she played this one smart.

  25. masy says:

Miley is a dumb girl , Nicki is a vile unpleasant woman.

    • Neah23 says:

Wow really I love they way you minimize Milley behavior by calling her a ” dumb girl”, but put full ownership on Niki by calling her a “vile woman” .

      • masy says:

Wow you’re really trying to pretend she didn’t threat Mariah Carey as well? She’s a vile, vile woman!!

  26. just anon says:

MTV should stop encouraging this unnessary attempt of stupid undying attention event. Don’t they ever get bored? It’s always the same bored pattern.

  27. jwoolman says:

If this junior high event happened as described, Nicki was just shooting fish in a barrel. No honor to it. She had plenty of other forums to deal with the actual issues, instead she chose to try to humiliate the young host of the show. Just because she had the skills to do it doesn’t mean she deserves any praise for it.

  28. Sharon says:

Does anyone not piss off Nicki? She fights with everyone. I strongly believe she has anger issues and needs treatment. I hate it when these no talent wannabes think they are better then anyone else and can humiliate or fight with anyone at any time. Doing it at the awards was truly a disgrace on Nicki’s part. Miley is no gem, but she handled it very well. It’s hard to fight with someone who won’t fight back. I am sure that pissed of Nicki more!

  29. Dirty Martini says:

    Team Nobody.

Miley should have learned from Taylor and she should have kept her mouth shut on the matter. Nobody cares what you think Miley. And it is getting to the point that no one cares too much about what Nicki thinks either.

  30. BrixTanny says:

I really do not understand why everyone is saying that Miley was rattled or that she looked scared. Taken aback, maybe. But most definitely not scared.

  31. Katija says:

I don’t get it. Was every stand-up comedian busy? Were Chris Rock and Amy Schumer at some charity function they couldn’t get out of? “Oh, man, we already spent $5,000 for the table…”

… I just don’t get… why Miley. There is nothing more uncomfortable than watching a not-funny person try to do a funny person’s job. Why not Donald Glover? Kevin Hart? Natasha Leggero? JFC, *ANY* COMIC.

I hate awards shows hosted by non-comedians. There’s a few exceptions, people like Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman, but they have killer comedic timing and showmanship. An awards show host needs to be able to deliver a joke. Period.

  32. Magpie says:

MTV was in on it because they must know the “winners” in advance. Miley caught off guard on purpse.

  33. Lisa says:

Does she ever keep her tongue in her mouth?

  34. iheartgossip says:

Their ‘acting’ was truly awful. 1000 ‘inside sources’ could tell me it was real & I would scoff each one. So Fake. WWF has better ‘beef’ acting.

  35. Amanda G says:

I’m thinking it was set up because Nicki and her lame boyfriend seem to only be able to be confrontational via Twitter/IG and not in person.

On another note, I loved the way Nicki looked in her gown. She could barely walk in it, but damn, she was sexy. Miley’s wardrobe, on the other hand, didn’t do her or the audience any favors (and I’m being kind here). I wish I could unsee it. Miley, stop trying to be cool. You will never be cool. It’s not in your hillbilly DNA.
