Emmy Rossum engaged to ‘Mr. Robot’ creator Sam Esmail: will they make it?

I was surprised to hear that Emmy Rossum, 28, is engaged to her boyfriend of about two years, Sam Esmail, as I follow Emmy and didn’t even know she was dating this guy. Esmail is the creator of Mr. Robot, a hacker drama on USA starring Christian Slater. It’s been renewed for a second season and has received a ton of buzz. Emmy seems like a serial monogamist She was maybe-married to a music producer she was with from about 2007-2009 and after that she dated Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows (really!) for a year and then her costar on Shameless, Tyler Jacob Moore (Tony the cop) from 2011 to 2013. She met Esmail in 2013 when he directed her in the movie Comet and now they’re engaged! Here’s more, from People:

Emmy Rossum and Sam Esmail are engaged!

The Shameless star and the writer/director became engaged over the weekend in Los Angeles, PEOPLE has learned exclusively. Rossum, 28, and Esmail, 37, have been dating for two years.

The happy personal news adds to what has been quite a year professionally for the couple, with Rossum’s turn as Fiona on Showtime’s Shameless continuing to earn her acclaim, and Esmail’s work as the creator of USA’s buzzy drama Mr. Robot making it a breakout year for him.

Esmail directed his bride-to-be in his 2014 romantic dramedy Comet, which also starred Justin Long.

Last year, Rossum painted a sweet picture of her then-boyfriend Esmail, telling PEOPLE he indulged the actress for her 28th birthday by allowing her to have a female-centered celebration.

I love seeing couples in love and these two have that glowing kind of happiness. I couldn’t find out much about Esmail’s personal life prior to Rossum, but his professional life is going incredibly well. Deadline reports that he has a seven figure deal with a television production company to direct and produce new shows. In terms of Rossum’s career, Shameless is set to return in January. That’s one of my favorite shows. I hope these two get married and become a new Hollywood power couple! I would like to see Rossum’s film career heat up. She can definitely act.

I think she’s really beautiful, but looks 100% better without makeup.

Also, I just watched the first ep of Mr. Robot last night. It was awesome! I’m excited to watch the rest of the season.

    • Absolutely says:

She is beautiful, isn’t she? They do seem rather glowing..

      • Ysohawt1 says:

Love her she is very talented and should be getting more work once Shameless is over and more accolades, if her Agents are good. She should be doing more feature films IMO. She has great talent.
She is very beautiful, ..wishing the best of luck to the couple.

      @kitten

I’m so jealous of you just starting to binge watch Mr.Robot, I’m all caught up now and have to wait on the finale. Still, I love going back and re-watching.

FYI: real star of that show and lead actor in Mr.Robot is Rami Malek – I am seriously in love. He deserves all the awards. Unbelievable acting. Sam chose his lead (and the rest of the cast) well!

      Congrats to the happy couple!!

      • Kitten says:

I’m already totally obsessed with Rami Malek. He’s mesmerizing to watch and his face! He’s like this beautiful, ET-like, nerdy alien…lol…I don’t think I’ve ever seen eyes that big before.

I really have no interest in tech-stuff so I was entirely caught off-guard with how exciting the first episode was. Anyway, I’m so happy to have a good show to watch…I was really getting bored there for a while.

      • QQ says:

Rami Malek’s face is GLORIOUS and is clear the Director also knows the Camera loves Him…. I’m also CRAZY about Tyrell and His Wife’s Storyline, Absolutely Crazy

      • Franca says:

I’ve seen Malek in The Pacific and he was amazing there. He can act for sure.

    • pru says:

I’m so excited to hear that people are watching Mr. Robot! It’s my new obsession. Rami Maleks’s performance is stunning and he is pure Egyptian beauty. Man, I’m tearing up just thinking of certain scenes in episodes 6, 7, 8, 9…………he is so talented.
Also, I hear he will be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight.

Just started watching this show and I’m hooked! Something to hold me over until Orphan Black comes back. Anyone have any other suggestions for sci-fi shows in the same vain?

    • s says:

The British Humans maybe? Less innovative, but still good. There’s also Utopia (soon to be remade in the States, I heard), but be warned, it’s violent and nihilistic to the point of the absurd.

    • QQ says:

      Black Mirror in Netflix

  3. Froggy says:

I love her and can’t wait for the next season of Shameless.
I got into that show because a teenaged girl came up to me to ask if I watch it (this was during the first season). I said no and she goes ‘u look just like Fiona’. We were on line at Barnes & Noble and I’m next but she takes out her phone to bring up a picture and without showing me goes ‘nevermind this is her on the red carpet. You look like her character on the show, not like her all made up’. :/

  4. layla says:

I love the difference in tone from the first article linked ( “maybe-married to a music producer”) to this one. Budget Ann Hathaway – Bwahahahahahahaha.

    • Celebitchy says:

That’s Kaiser writing that though. We write differently although we are both jaded bitches.

      • layla says:

Oh no! It was not meant in criticism… just a generality in how Rossum is now perceived. From bland and cant act and budget AH to, well, now we have Shameless and she is awesome in it. I was the exact same way on her.

  5. s says:

I had no idea these two were together. They really look good next to each other.
Mr. Robot is stylish, intense and intriguing. I’m already psyched for season two, and I haven’t even seen the season finale.

  6. serena says:

She can act really well, but it seems like they always offer her the same Fiona roles: like the latest movie with Hilary Swank.

  7. Rachel says:

Ahhh! That little Yorkie with her tongue out… what was the story about???

  8. StormsMama says:

I love her. She has a great career- works consistently, doesn’t constantly sell herself –
And Shameless is awesome. It’s really the only show I consider “appointment television”

  9. Jessie says:

I was a HUGE fan of the British Shameless (and the fabulous Anne-Marie Duff), so I was skeptical about Emmy’s Fiona, but she is SO GOOD on that show! Also gorgeous 🙂 Much happiness to her and her fiancé!

  10. lucy2 says:

I keep hearing Mr. Robot is good, i will have to check it out.
Emmy is great on Shameless and very pretty.

  11. Littlebowbee says:

I used to find her saccharin and annoying but over the last few years she has shown to be a really good actress. She does vulnerable, broken and badass all very well. Most recently I saw her Before I Disapear. So good!

  12. Esteph says:

I swoon over her. Not only can she act but she’s the type of girl/lady who should be idolized, and not one of the Kardashian gals.

  13. Chloeee says:

    Comet was so boring 🙁

  14. ashley says:

Congrats to them! She’s my fave on shameless,i love that show so much, can’t wait for the new season.

    • Franca says:

I can’t believe she hasn’t won major awards for Shameless. And Noel Fisher is amazing in that show, he should have won all the awards.

  15. Ronda says:

Complex wrote about her and her ex-husband:
“We’re sure that Justin Siegel is a perfectly nice guy, but this relationship is just another case of a clearly hot girl having the ability to do so much better than the guy she’s with.”

just switch the names of the guy and it also perfectly fits here. she must have low self esteem.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, everyone should base their relationships purely on physical appearance. If you’re not with someone as hot as you, you clearly hate yourself!

      I mean… are you 12?

  16. Jessica says:

Can’t stand her and her endless supply of pap walks. Am I the only one who remembers how she was supposedly acting like a bitchy diva on the Shameless set and William H. Macy told her off in front of everyone because he doesn’t put up with that crap? I’ve never seen the show, so I can’t comment on her acting, but I just don’t like her. But everyone else seems to, so whatever.

On the other hand, I absolutely love Mr. Robot. Best new show to come along in ages.

  17. taxi says:

Phantom of the Opera put on my + list forever. She was also in Mystic River. I hope we hear her sing again. She is classically trained and appeared in about 20 operas @ the Met.
