After a completely scarfless photocall, Johnny Depp and Amber heard walked the Venice red carpet together for Black Mass. We already talked about how the movie meant to save Johnny’s career was increasingly upping the stakes in the stomach-crunching trailer department. Now early reviews from Venice are pouring out, and everyone’s talking about an Oscar for Johnny. With only a few handfuls of reviews so far, the film has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the buzz is excellent. Maybe Johnny can pull this off? I’d enjoy watching him to a full-on Oscar campaign without swaying at a microphone. Admit it, you wanna see Johnny hustle too.
On the fashion front, Amber didn’t exactly bring it here. Her makeup looks different than usual, and it’s throwing me off. She wore a Stella McCartney gown, which means the cut was bizarre. This is Stella’s attempt at a plunging sweetheart neckline, and it didn’t go well. Why do stars wear her designs? Amber’s shoes are Christian Louboutin. Johnny wore all Dior Homme, and this three-piece tux isn’t what I expected. If Johnny had it his way, he’d be wearing jeans and a zany hat, but now that he’s doing “cool” guitar-playing commercials to sell perfume, Johnny dresses for events on Dior’s dime.
The shower requirement must be crushing his aura. During a Venetian press conference, Johnny joked about eating his dogs to fix the Terriergate fallout: “I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kind of, I don’t know, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia.” Errrrhm, was he stoned?
Anyway, Amber was all over Johnny. They finally got together when it really counted. Let the ear nibbling commence.
Dakota Johnson wore a blush pink Prada gown, which is so beautiful on her. She looks so lovely in simple gowns like this one and her red Saint Laurent from the Oscars. This pink dress is so much better the crocheted Amish number from the photocall.

Johnny has serious substance abuse issues. It is insane that, at his age, he’s still clubbing and falling over on sidewalks. Seems to me like River OD’ing at his own club would still ring a bell somewhere.
Amber is too young to give a damn and take this seriously. She’s not in the same phase of life and she probably automatically accepts this aspect of him, as it fits his overall “badboy” image. All of us, including her, remember the hot and talented Johnny from back when. Even though he’s clearly aging in front of us, it’s hard to realise those days are over. He needs to clean himself up.
Johnny now looks similar to an older male family member of mine who is very sick from side effects of alcoholism. Same blank expressions, same bloated mid-section… it’s quite eerie, actually.
Oh, Wellie, how sad for your family. I came to say I didn’t realise just how much JD looks like one of my nephews, YoungFrank. YF was the biggest pothead I’d ever seen – wasting so many years of his younger life – never working, and blowing a $500k insurance payout after a horrible car accident when he was 13. He finally moved to another state (in Oz), cleaned himself up, went to uni, got a degree in music, then a Masters in IT, and now runs the IT departments of the captital’s university and major hospital, which are linked. He’s also a Black Belt high-Dan in an elite martial art, married to a lovely Vietnamese lady, so everything is great for him now. JD does look a mess, despite the fancy garms and…platform shoes. I really had hoped he’d have grown out of this behaviour, but I guess that’s the nature of addiction…
I saw the statement he made about his dogs. It was….a bit silly? I think Barnaby Joyce did blow the issue out of proportion, though. There are processes and protocols he should have followed without all the fanfare. In any case, I believe the issue is with Amber Heard, not Depp. I don’t think his name is even mentioned in legal documents. She, not him, has been summonsed to appear in court on the Gold Coast today – any minute, in fact, but, to my knowledge, she’s not even in the country. I guess the lawyers will deal with it in her absence.
Barkingmad – She has been found guilty and has to wait to see if she has to face jail time. She should have to go to jail, but I bet she won’t. We should be sending a message to the rest of the world.
My mistake, not found guilty, adjourned until November. Still hoping she is found guilty though and still hoping she goes to jail.
Not only that, but he looks unhealthy. There were some horrible close-ups on Dlisted that really show the bloat, the stoned look and absolutely scary teeth. I understand that not everyone wants to have the blinding, perfect movie star teeth, but his look like he’s homeless.
Amber is pretty, but the smug is so strong with this one, I just can’t stand her. Even being Mrs. Depp can’t make her into a successful actress, no matter how many mouth breathing poses she tries.
Dakota still looks like her hair was done by frustrated kittens looking for their twine ball, and the braless pink affair is as bad now as when Goopy tried the look twenty years ago. Boring and uninspired fashion, just like Dakota. This RC is a home to nepotism. Talent, not so much.

Amber is pretty. She has a face that can take make up very well too. The makeup with the dress seem off… Her face and hair are summer sun dress and the gown is better than i’d expect from Stella, but it doesn’t match the face/hair. mismatched overall.

that is so true. they are thummbing their noses at australias laws that are designed to protect the public health of the occupants of the country (human, animals). could you imagine if it were the health of their pets and the tables were turned? im sure they would be outraged and make sure to shout it from the rooftops…plus the constant denigration of the customs agent is just rude and graceless. you knew the laws or if you didnt your assistant should have figured it out before you took pets there. this is basic.
He is referring to our minister of agriculture who said that the dogs needed to “bugger off” or they would be destroyed, not a customs agent. This comment is why I thought Amber getting all the flack about her comment on avoiding Australia in the future was not just her talking .. but she was sharing something they both felt. I think he looks awful. He looks terribly unhealthy. He wears a lot of makeup now because he knows he looks bad, and in pictures from this event he was sweaty and very pale. His teeth also looked like they were rotting.
I saw a comment on DM that said Amber looks at Johnny not the way an adoring wife looks at her husband, but the way someone lovingly looks like an elderly relative. i totally agree with that. Girl is an opportunist and he seems very desperate at this phase in his life, in my opinion.
@Daria Morgendorffer I agree with what you say about the pictures of Johnny and Amber on DM. But what really disturbed me most is the way Amber is often grabbing his face and kissing him hard.
I first noticed this when they appeared at the Art of Elysium gala last January (when Amber was wearing a white ‘bridal-looking’ dress). She was almost forcing her tongue into his mouth. It disturbed me back then because that type of PDA wasn’t Johnny’s style at all in the past.
And now, in Venice this weekend, Amber was at it again in the same way. Not in a passionately, but in greedily and possessively. As if she was telling the audience: ‘Look, I OWN him now, this man who was an icon to you for so long. He is mine, I can do with him what I want.’

to me it’s totally glaring, like she’s gained a ton of weight to the point of changing her facial structure or something, but the rest of her looks super thin… it’s not just the first photo, but the effect is the most pronounced in that photo. her actual jawline seems to be shaped differently. Cheeks filled? Also, slight wonk-eye? Did she get some work done (but why?? she’s normally stunning) I can’t put my finger on it exactly, it’s frustrating.

I watched the video, too, and I wonder why she seems so nervous? She is twichting and turning left and right and has a very muted smile. She tries to entice or to interest Johnny Depp to get a cute couple photo in which both look each other in the eye lovingly but Depp doesn’t get it. He should at least pretend to be in a loving relationship as it is a red carpet thing. But he doesn’t seem to.

I was surprised by the pictures on DM. Their relationship looks like it’s in trouble based on how bored he looks to be with her and how hard she’s trying to prove they’re oh so in love. Johnny looks super unhealthy, all bloated and sweaty, his skin coloring is bad. He really looks awful.

I Agree @Liz. What I see is a wife who is trying to make Johnny look good. She is wasting her time because there is no way that greasy, disgusting looking man will ever look good again. He has toppled so far in the last 2 years and not even a beautiful, young wife can change his destructive ways. She should get out of this mess before she’s too beaten down (not physically but mentally) and becomes self destructive herself. @ Liz I have lived in Italy too, and I can imagine the Italians going crazy about Amber. Much as I love them, the Italians can be very superficial and deeply impressed with beauty (especially tall and blonde beauty). In addition to that, couplings of gorgeous young women with old, rich men, are pretty standard there. And by the way, I could easily imagine Amber as a VERY successful Italian TV presenter – they would love her to death.

And I like that she is not surgically enhanced, like sooooo many other actresses are these days. I mean she is not stunning like say, Angelina Jolie (but really who is haha??) but I think this look on her is amazing and seems effortless.

He was in the press conference when a reporter asked about bringing the dogs to Venice to a gondola trip (very stupid question) and the director of the movie, seemed very upset that a question about this were in the press conference so he said it was “inappropriate”, etc, etc. that’s when Johnny Depp came with the “I killed my dogs and ate them” and everybody went on to laugh…i think he was just trying to break the bad blood between Scott Cooper and the journalist
Other than that, it’s obvious he has ill feelings toward Barnaby, that’s not deny it, but this looked more like a joke to ease the tension

Just like during that conference when, after a journo called his costar Dakota Fanning by mistake, Johnny leaned into his mic and said he changed his name last week, too. Again, seemed ok during the early press conf but went rapidly downhill after Amber appeared. Depp’s team looked upset when she was around.
Why? Is there something wrong? He smoked what looked like a joint at her premiere, and though I know Johnny has always been a poser, something is off there. Amber’s eyes are puffy, as if she were crying.
I think Amber is gorgeous and I love Johnny and he can wear whatever the F*** he likes.
I don’t want this to come across as a criticism of Depp’s weight gain because I couldn’t care less, but isn’t it odd when a man who, although known for being slim, has gone through what I call “The Thickening” (a la Travolta) uses weight as an insult against someone else? Like, Johnny. Do unto others.

Depp has a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor. My take was that he was being ironic about his own weight gain when making the sarcastic remark about the Australian. Like any overweight person, he knows how he looks. It must be uncomfortable for him having to be the focus of attention at these red carpet events, where he knows he’s going to be crucified by bloggers and other industry people because of his current appearance.
I thought the same, he is starting to become quite “big-gutted himself”.
It’s always funny for me to read threads about Amber Heard, Amal Clooney and Alicia Vikander. I find the bile and vicious hatred most women have for them (for obvious reasons) very entertaining.
Amber is never going to become a big movie star, but it’ll be interesting to see if Alicia Vikander can become one in light of the already significant amount of dislike people who are aware of her seem to have for her.
In terms of her acting, sure she seems technically good, but I find her to be boring and forgettable.
I am not familiar with Alicia Vikander. Why do people dislike her?
Who’s hating on Amber? I see a couple comments about her being smug, but the vast majority of the negativity is being directed at Johnny.

I don’t think you should put heard in the same category as the other two. Especially with regards to Amal it’s more that she has been sold as this perfect woman and that rubs some people the wrong way. It’s a sort of jealousy in my opinion she can’t be that accomplished people say, almost as if they do not want to believe her career.
Heard is known to be a rather weak actress. Her career was not going anywhere before she became depps girlfriend, alas now she’s getting ( arguably tiny) parts in much classier projects. Amal was already Involved in high profile cases before clooney . Wikander was cast in all these high profile projects long before she got on the gossip radar or met fassbender. These two women had a career prior to meeting a man. I am no fan of either, but to me It’s easier to see why people side eye heard.
The problem with heard is she’s not accomplished in her own right. And her presence in gossip pages coincides with depps fall from grace. If she had some sort of career, something people could like her for besides her beauty and marrying depp.. But well that’s not the case. I also think a lot of people feel like she made him less cool. Although she shouldn’t really be blamed for that. He made his own choice.
She loves his money and his fame and his addiction along with the potential early death it will bring only gets her closer to her own exagerated widowed limelight by proxy.
And… I think he loves her but knows that’s her game but is too invested to walk away so lives in perpetual depression because of bad choices.
I also think that, because he knows she’s only with him for those reasons, he’s becoming more invested in the hollywood game that deep down has always sickened him.
Me thinks you have watched too many Dateline NBC shows or read too many murder mysteries. Now, you almost accusing AH of trying to push Johnny into an early grave? I don’t think it will be required to give him even a nudge in that direction, Johnny’s handling that all by himself.
He’s a grown man with nearly twice as much life experience and a hundred times more money and power than she has, not some sensitive ingenue. – Not disagreeing that she’s an opportunist by the way, but it makes me angry when adult men are coddled like this.
I weep for my childhood crush. He used to be so gorgeous and vibrant and perfect. Now, he’s gross.
There is a close-up on Gawker that shows his teeth and it is disturbing. It is hard to believe that he won People’s Sexiest Man of the Year not once, but twice! I hope he gets a hold of himself because he is so talented. Amber I find vapid but beautiful. For an actress who is not very talented, she has made a very smart move by being with Johnny.
At least he’s smiling in this, but yeah not looking good.

I have to agree with all the comments on Johnny’s appearance. He really looks like he needs to get his drinking under control.
That said, I read Black Mass a few years ago and loved it. I am really hoping the movie’s a good adaptation. And I think that Johnny Depp is well cast as Whitey Bulger.

Why doesn’t Dior see to it his suits are tailored, at least to some degree? His sleeves and trousers are always abundantly too long for him. It makes the suit look off-the-rack and he needed a “short” cut but bought “regular” or “long.”
To be fair, he always dressed awfully. I still remember him in some horrible brown striped suit with Kate in the nineties. It was so bad, I could never forget it.
Good for him if the film does well. People seem to dislike him a lot here, but I like Johnny. He’s a very talented with a unique charisma, imo. I can totally understand why so women of all ages are crazy for him (not the current Johnny, though), even when I’m not personally.
Not me, I like him a lot. Always have. What saddens me is that he seems to have a substance abuse problem and can’t or won’t get it under control. I’m happy he has challenged himself with this role instead of coasting along with yet another lucrative Pirates movie. He’s very talented.
I don’t think people here dislike him, I think they dislike what he’s become. The scarves, the grease and grime, marrying a woman young enough to be his daughter, and abusing alcohol and/or drugs makes it hard for people who loved him years ago to keep loving him now.
