Kristen Stewart in Chanel at the Venice Film Festival: lovely or boring?

141940PCN_EqualsPremiere07

In the futuristic love story Equals, Kristen Stewart plays a young woman who must remain emotionless at all times. As you can see, she really took to her character. You might even say that she was typecast. Anyway, K-Stew and Nicholas Hoult were in Venice to premiere Equals this weekend. I’m including pics from Saturday’s photocall and from last night’s premiere.

Fashion notes: Kristen is the face of Chanel and she wore Chanel back-to-back at the photocall and premiere. For the photocall, she wore some kind of quilted shorts-and-matching-quilted-top ensemble which… it’s not my thing, but if you’re going to do quilted shorts, they might as well be Chanel. The premiere dress is another story. It doesn’t really suit Kristen and I think she looks rather uncomfortable in it, but I enjoy the fact that she tried to GO BIG, you know? She treated the Venice Film Festival carpet with respect and she really tried to be a major fashion girl. I like her more for that.

Equals created a major buzz at Venice, even though the reviews were mixed. The film picked up some major distributors – go here to read. Kristen and Hoult also chatted with Deadline about making the film, which they describe as a very emotional experience. Hoult confesses to weeping openly on the set, which just makes me like him even more. Here are some assorted quotes from Kristen:

On fear: “I think the biggest killer in this life is fear. I think a nice healthy dose of it can be motivating, but if you let it debilitate and dictate how you treat other people, it’s very ugly.”

She was nervous: “I was nervous going into the movie because of how simple it is and overtly emotional. I’m 25. I’ve been through some stuff and I knew it was going to be painful and I knew if I didn’t do it right I would have hated myself.” The hardest part was “not allowing yourself to feel something. I wear my heart on my sleeve. If I’m in a mood, my mood shows.”

Her goals: “[I want to] thrive commercially and the only way I could do that would be genuinely. So everything I’ve ever done that ended up being big or started out being big and ended up not being big, I was always just as invested in those projects as I have been in every small indie. I never choose things in order to switch it up… It sounds like pretention, but it is an art, and it consumes you. I get really stoked when something comes around that’s commercial and they want me because that means I can do these next three things that I’ve been lining up.”

Do we exist? “Do we still exist if love doesn’t exist? If you don’t have passion for something — maybe not for another person — but if you have drive and passion and curiosity, that’s what keeps our world spinning. If you take that away, why would you want to learn anything?” Then she answered her own question, “Would we still exist if love didn’t? No.”

[From Deadline]

While I still have issues with Kristen-the-Celebrity, I think she’s in an interesting place in her career, and she seems to be in a healthier place in her mindset about her career. I like that she comes out and says that she wants to “thrive commercially” – as in, she doesn’t want to do just small indie films for the sake of it, she wants people to see her films, she wants to be enjoyed as an actress.

Incidentally, Alicia Cargile did not come to Venice with Kristen. I do wonder if something is going on between them. Something like… a cooling off period.

I love the dress and the shoes and they would look a whole lot better on her if she would stand up straight. She had absolutely terrible posture. And that dull stare doesn’t help

    • tracking says:

Agreed on all accounts! She’s very pretty, but doesn’t carry herself well and her attitude stinks.

      • JFresh says:

Interesting though. I like when stars don’t look perfectly polished and poised all the time. The most creative people can’t present themselves to society’s tastes and we shouldn’t expect them to.

      • minx says:

JFresh, I agree with you that “the most creative people can’t present themselves to society’s tastes.” But Kristen Stewart isn’t “the most creative” anything–she’s a mediocre, sullen but fortunate actress who should stand up straight and smile because she has nothing else to offer.

      • Dr M says:

My point exactly – if someone could spell out what she has ”offered” so far as an actress (besides those abysmal Twilight performances) I’d be grateful.

      • JFresh says:

@ minx I disagree but absolutely respect your opinion.

@ Dr M Have you seen American Ultra? And Clouds of Sils Maria? In both of those movies she swept me away. She has a fascinating screen presence and is offering something no other young actress is right now, IMO. Others could, yes– not saying she’s the be all end all…. I just really enjoy her performances. Never saw twilight.

Thanks for your replies. Tell me which actresses you do like, I’m just curious 😉

      • Kosmos says:

It’s not the dress or the posture, but just her….I just do not think she is interesting nor do I respect her anymore. I think she did me in way back when she said f*** to everything and that she didn’t want to be this or that, but that’s exactly and precisely what she IS trying to secretly be…..and she wants Hollywood and wants to be famous, so she ruined it for me a long time ago, sorry.

    • evermore says:

Gorgeouuus dress and she is very pretty. I don’t get her personality though.

    • EC says:

To be fair, I saw tons of pictures of her smiling in both these looks, I think over at daily mail (hangs head in shame) and she looked really happy and quite beautiful. Not my favorite dress but she looked so at ease and confident, which was great to see. Bonus points for the dark lippy too.

    • sills says:

LOL, my grandma always said, “You look 50% better by just standing up straight”. I think it’s true your posture and “aura” can really make or break a look. Kristen, though I’ve enjoyed her acting, always looks uncomfortable on red carpets and the slouchiness is part of that.

      • Sammy says:

@sillisThere were plenty of pictures of her stand up straight and very comfortable, smiling and happy. I love how some sites like to pick her less flattering pictures.

    • JudyK says:

Was going to comment on the blank stare (as though there’s nothing behind the eyes), but you did it for me.

    • Tessy says:

She looks terribly uncomfortable in the lace outfit photos, probably the shoes are hurting her feet. Her fists are clenched and she has her feet lifted out of her shoes every chance she gets.

But then I don’t ever think somebody looks nice in shoes like that, all I can think of is how much pain they must be in.

Not to mention that silly square tattoo on her arm. I’m so over tattoos.

    • CTgirl says:

The dress doesn’t fit her around the waist with that weird little bulge and it reads as too mature. The makeup and hair are good but the dress and shoes are a yawn. Oh, and she is still learning how to use the English language. After 25 years. In another 25 years she may get a handle on vocabulary and syntax.

  2. minx says:

Sorry, I can’t stand this dour little chickie. She lucked into a hugely successful franchise; that’s the only reason why anyone interviews her.
Oh, and the pictures of her in the shorts–I want to slap her back and tell her to stand up straight. She has no idea how to carry herself.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Exactly. And it is quite interesting that she – as an actress – can’t present herself on the red carpet. Red carpet is pretenting, too, just like acting.

      • evermore says:

I think her thing is playing Anti-celebrity on the redcarpet , all the while being in and doing commericials, taking advertisement contratcs, being a movie star in a major franchise. It doesn’t work. LOL

She must like her job, she keeps doing it. Why she has to look so sullen just weird or annoying. lol
She must be going to fittings, getting her makeup and hair done, so she needs to stop pretending like she hates her job or film promotional appearances.

  3. Lk says:

    The overall effect is gorgeous.

  4. serena says:

I don’t like the shorts-shirt ensamle, too basic, but I really loved the premiere dress! I don’t agree with you Kaiser, I think she can go ‘BIG’ and do very well as she did in Venice now. My only complain is her hairstyle, but other than that the premiere look was fabulous!

    • Naya says:

I feel exactly the opposite. Granted I very very rarely get the fuss over redcarpet fashion, or even generally dress up fashions. I mean isn’t it all the same, so unless you are really stunning in a different way (Lupita Nyongo) or really uniquely bad (Lena Durnham) then you’re instantly forgotten. The shorts ensemble isn’t polished and all that but I find her ridiculously hot in it, hair, legs, heels. I would totally be trying to get her number if she walked into the room, which isn’t something I usually think when it comes to Hollywood starlets.

      • Dee Kay says:

I also prefer the quilted shorts ensemble to the gown. Even thought the shorts are a “dressed-down” look rather than a “dressed-up” look, the vibe just suits her personality so much better, she looks way more comfortable and at ease, and after all it is Chanel, so I think it works for a daytime RC event.

Plus the gown seems wrinkled in the midsection? Like there’s a teeny little apron there? Something about the fit of that gown is off.

  5. kay says:

She looks rough in the face. The dress doesn’t suit her it’s too feminine for her masculine energy and why can’t she close her legs.

Her stans claim she isn’t into big budget projects but now she admits that’s what she wants.
This movie will flop like her last one.

  6. RH says:

I think she looks beautiful in the dress! I love when she smiles and looks happy! I wish her the best.

  7. Bethie says:

I think it’s really funny that tabloids are speculating whether she and Hoult (?) are dating because they were photographed smiling and laughing together.

She’s literally been spotted kissing Alicia and they’re all still like “gal pals!” but laugh at some dude’s joke? DOING IT!

I think she’s stunning in that dress.

  8. talia says:

    I love both outfits!

  9. COSquared says:

That all-black ensemble looks like a goth fun-run running freebie.

  10. InvaderTak says:

My one quibble with the silver look is the matchy shoes. That always looks bridal.
The black one looks like she bought it in the edgy section of tj maxx.

  11. mädchen says:

Kristen looks beautiful in that dress. I also like her photo call look, elegant and comfortable, my goal.

  12. Jess says:

The first thought that came to my mind when I saw that dress was futuristic bridesmaid. I hope no Robsten fans read this because of Alicia and Kristen (maybe) on a break cause rob and twigs are rumored to be on a break as well.

  13. Stacey says:

I have never seen a picture of Kristen when she didn’t look just miserable. It’s gotten old.

  14. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Hideous dress. Hate it – unflattering, stiff, wrinkled mess.

    • MP says:

Yeah, way too much lace on top. Makes it look appropriate for a woman in her sixties. Also the midsection either doesn’t fit or got wrinkled in the car. It makes her look chubby which she obviously isn’t. Not a good look.

I really wonder if it’s a good idea for actresses to make a deal with a fashion house. Sure they get a lot of money but when you don’t have a lot of options they often have to wear pretty horrible stuff. I sometimes feel bad for the Dior crowd; J-Law, Natalie Portman. When they are doing a big pr tour and have to wear Dior every day, most of their outfits are pretty hideous. Ok, maybe I don’t really feel bad for them since their lives are pretty privileged but you know…

    • Prim&Proper says:

Yes, I think the dress looks horrible when she is standing up, but in the picture of her
sitting down, the dress looks gorgeous – it’s the middle section that doesn’t work for me.

    • belle de jour says:

I hate it, too. The first impression I had was of a cheap, plastic metallic silver doily from the back of some auntie’s fancy living room settee, or those dolls meant to cover up toilet paper rolls in the bathroom. The proportions are off, and so is the cut… and the way it hangs in the middle!?

The winged epaulets are just Uncle Karl being silly.

I don’t think she enjoys dressing up enough to pull off wearing ‘big fashion’ like this. And it’s always frustrating to see someone up on tip-toe in ill-fitting, uncomfortable shoes that look like static props.

Her make-up and hair are very flattering here. Still think that tattoo is heavy and distracting and too much solid ink for where it is, though. But when you pick an image from Guernica to wear on your arm every day, it’s going to be heavy by definition, I guess.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

It’s like a poorly fitted ‘mother of the bride’ dress but if she just stood up straight it would look so much better.

  15. Chinoiserie says:

Her outfits look great and its cute that she kicked of her shoes, that is what would have done. I just sold my shoes that were similar looking. I loved the way they looked but they hurt my feet so much I never wore them.

  16. Ashley says:

Mixed reviews? It’s getting slammed. Only really good one was from Marlow at Daily Beast who’s not even a critic. Check out Rotten Tomatoes – Equals is a disaster .

    • InvaderTak says:

They are funny though. “Oppression, by Calvin Klein” lol

      • Helo says:

@Invader Tak: Ha!…yeah, that review was hilarious…was that the one from Alonso Duralde at The Wrap?. All the bad reviews (which is all of them BTW,) are deliciously snarky.

I like the review from Peter Debruge from Variety that described Hoult as “manniquin handsome”… bwaahaha!.

    • Mark says:

Do people actually read the reviews? They are mixed, the movie isn’t being slammed by any means. And if you look on rotten tomatoes there are only 4 reviews posted up and Rotten Tomatoes is the flawed anyway, if you want to get a good read on a movie go on metacritic.

But this is the internet where people read the headline and complain.

    • Jennifer says:

The RT ratings are negative but if you read the reviews most of them are not slamming it. They say it’s derivative and a bit dull. But she and Hoult are getting good reviews for their acting and chemistry and the reviews also think this will sell decently to the YA crowd.

  17. Amelia says:

The dark lip and her pale skin work so well together in that picture where she’s sitting down with Holt. Very pretty!

  18. Jules says:

The reviews are dismal. I have a feeling the marketing plan will go the way of Twilight…ie., film sucks, leads are eh, but pretty so market this puppy as a film for romantics, complete with fake tabloid stories about how the two leads have a fierce love for each other in real life.

Romeo and Juliet if they acted like zombies and wore a lot of white clothing.

    Twilight 2.0 folks

  19. Size Does Matter says:

I think the dress is very pretty, but the wrong color for her. She looks so washed out. Like a porcelain doll who drank a bottle of grape juice.

  20. Insomniac says:

I really don’t like that dress – I think it overwhelms her. Then again, I hate most of what Chanel puts her in. She can wear the hell out of simpler looks, but Chanel seems to like frou-frou.

  21. Elisa the I. says:

she looks adorbs in the pic where she kicked off her shoes.

  22. Liz says:

Those military kind of things on her shoulders spoil the line of the dress. They don’t suit her either because she’s already got big shoulders. It’s an unfeminine look, but maybe it’s what she wants. She looks miserable and lonely…

  23. JEM says:

Just came here to announce my somewhat inappropriate crush on Nicholas Hoult. He is HOT. And I, alas, am OLD.

    • Helo says:

      @JEM: Ha!…yeah, well you’re not alone!.

It’s funny though, my daughter who is 18, doesn’t see what is so hot about Hoult…she is more of a Chris Hemsworth, Aaron Taylor Johnson kind of young woman. I mentioned in passing that I thought Hoult was a nice looking young man and my daughter replied:

“Eh…he’s not though because he has a tiny head and his eyes are too big…oh, and he apparently was a jerk to Jennifer Lawrence so I really don’t like him”. Ha!…

    • Tiffany :) says:

He looks so good in the plaid shirt and jeans! Gah!

  24. JH says:

    Ummm, why, helloooooo Nicholas!

  25. TOPgirl says:

I think she’s come out of her terrible ordeal with Rob a stronger woman. She looks more and more beautiful and so gracious.

  26. Greenieweenie says:

    Man she has great legs

    • carol says:

Really? I think they are awful. Yes they are long and skinny but have absolutely no shape at all

      • perplexed says:

I think her ankles look a little odd in heels.

Weirdly enough, her legs seem to look better in the shot where her shoes are off.

  27. Saks says:

Hollywood films have been ruining these International Film Festivals for me. Now its like the only importance of them, especially Venice and Toronto is to make prediction for the Oscars. I get its all about money and exposure for the organizers but still…

  28. Lucy says:

She’s a beautiful young woman, in a striking, kind of unusual way, which I like. Her fashion’s nice as well, maybe not her best, but nice nonetheless. And of course, he is a total doll!!!
PS: Has anyone noticed how she never wears earrings? (Nothing wrong about it, ofc)

    • Jennifer says:

She doesn’t have pierced ears. Sometimes she’ll wear a clip on ear cuff and they usually look very cool.

  29. Tig says:

If you are paid to be the face of a brand, doesn’t that imply keeping said shoes on? I assume the pumps are Chanel as well as the dress. Honestly, if the shoes hurt that badly, don’t wear them. Taking them off during the event is unprofessional to say the least.

    • I’m not sure but I think the pumps are Laboutin, not Chanel. The red soles indicate that they are Laboutin. The designers don’t seem to suffer from her taking her shoes off or changing her clothes.

    • Bridget says:

You can clearly see the label inside the shoe: Louboutin. She’s not the first actress to be photographed having taken her shoes off once inside the event, and I’m sure she won’t be the last.

    • Div says:

It’s not like she took her shoes off on the red carpet…she took them off inside when watching the film and she’s hardly the first star to chuck her shoes when at a screening inside. I get finding it annoying, but you honestly think it’s “unprofessional to say the least”? Seems a bit hyperbolic

  30. M.A.F. says:

It’s the hair. I like the dress (I assume it’s made to look big) and the dark lip but the hair was wrong. I love that she took her shoes off inside the theater. But if the shoes hurt, you never take them off until you get home or you’ll never get them back on. Isn’t that an unwritten rule?

  31. Ally8 says:

Ugh, the skirt part of the dress in the red carpet look is hideous. It looks like Molly Ringwald’s first attempt at that fugly dress in Pretty in Pink. Two pieces of stiff satin with some lace glued on, oy vey. She looks very cute sitting down in it and barefoot, though. Nicholas Hoult also is more and more of a cutie.

  32. carol says:

She looks gorgeous in both outfits. She kind of reminds me just a little of a young keaunu Reeves. They are both inarticulate, they are both good-looking, they are both a little edgy, both seem harmless and both strive to be good actors but fail most of the time

  33. Katie says:

Is she capable of looking anything more than totally bored or annoyed?

  34. FLORC says:

Kristen has a great body for fashion and her face takes make up very well. The more extreme the better. If her posture was better the clothes would be perfect, but she slouches so it ruins the effect imo.
And a character that must remain emotionless? Looks like Kristen will turn out her best performance yet.

  35. Beatrice says:

I love the dress but it seems wrong for Kristen. Helen Mirren could really rock that dress.

  36. jammypants says:

Love the look, but her posture kills it a bit. Own it girl. Don’t let the look own you.

Here she looks much more confident http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/articles/55776-pic-kristen-stewart-smiles-on-first-red-carpet-post-scandal/1346981052_kristen-zoom.jpg

  37. Eleonor says:

I like the dress, I don’t like her makeup.

  38. perplexed says:

Is this the first interview where she hasn’t used in any F-words?

  39. Nan says:

She seems to be wearing clothes she actually wants to wear, there’s smile on her face and she looks healthy. Yesss, more of this please.

  40. Div says:

I like the dress but it’s not tailored well…

  41. Who ARE these people? says:

Mostly interested in those plush gold chairs in the screening room. Fug or fab? : )

  42. Jennifer says:

Her character doesn’t remain emotionless. Far from it. The entire point of the movie is that she and Hoult’s characters DO feel emotions. So while they hide it in public, they have a ton of very emotional scenes (I read the script). The review from The Hollywood Reporter specifically said she gets to display some raw emotion that she doesn’t always get to in other movies.

I like both looks. The photocall look is pretty simple and classic but she brings a punky vibe to it. As for the premiere dress, I think it’s gorgeous. The silhouette is lovely and gives me a 1950’s vibe. I just don’t get the bunching by her waist and I don’t like the flaps on the shoulders.

    • Lou says:

i love how she is clearly trolling the internet by doing a movie where she has to be ~emotionless. LOL , Go kstew!

  43. coco says:

one of the most gorgeous women i have ever seen.and anyone say otherwise is absolutely jealous

  44. Lou says:

You said Alicia and Kristen were ‘cooling off’ right after her mom’s faux interview too yet they are still very much together and Alicia was at the American Ultra premiere. Why would Alicia go to Venice FF? She has her own job and Kristen was going to be working the whole time. She never goes to events like this so i don’t get the speculation.

  45. kitty-bye says:

    Lovely!

  46. Veronica says:

She’s gorgeous, though her slouchy posture sometimes drives me up a wall. (And looks painful. Slouching in high heels hurts my back, so I don’t know how she does it.) The dress is lovely, though I think it’s a touch too matronly for her. The quilted short set looks more to her style.

  47. Putnam Princess says:

Forget K-Stew lets just focus on how incredible Nicholas Hoult looks. I would take him home with me for sure.

  48. DarkSparkle says:

I feel like Shawn Mullins nailed this years ago –

“And she still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile.
And all her friends tell her she’s so pretty.
But she’d be whole lot prettier if she smiled once in a while,
’cause even her smile looks like a frown.
She’s seen her share of devils in this angel town”

  49. Bread and Circuses says:

Squee! That photo where she took her shoes off and is barefoot! Omigosh, I’m not used to having spontaneous, “I love her!” reactions to KStew, but for that photo, I love her!

  50. Kaianne says:

I love the dress and the shoes, the dark lipstick gives her that classic look.
Chanel must be making money on Kristin modelling their clothing’s.
Because Karl Lagerfeld kept her as his muse.
