Sam Smith was chosen for the James Bond ‘Spectre’ theme song: great choice?

I know Sam Smith hates being compared to Adele and he hates being called “the Boy Adele,” but IT IS TRUE. They both have beautiful voices and some body image issues. They’re both hard-scrabble working class Brits. They both got recording contracts, fame and success when they were very young. And they both bring the blue-eyed soul back to music. And now there’s another similarity: they’re both probably going to have Oscars for doing a James Bond theme song. When Adele was chosen to do the song for “Skyfall,” it was the result of months of speculation that she would be absolutely perfect. Same with Sam – people have been saying for nearly a year that Sam should be chosen for the Spectre theme song. And the official announcement came today! HUZZAH!

The song – which has already been recorded – is called “Writing’s On the Wall.” Sam posted the above image on his Instagram with the message:

This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it. You can pre-order ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ on CD or vinyl using the link on my profile, or on iTunes from midnight.

Here’s a fun fact which I didn’t realize: Sam is the first solo male singer to do a Bond theme song since Tom Jones did “Thunderball” (which is a great song, btw). Paul McCartney did “Live and Let Die” but he did it with his band at the time, Wings.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to hearing this. Sam’s got an incredible voice and I definitely believe that if the song is any good (which it will be, you know that), he’ll be nominated for an Oscar. Sam Smith… performing at the Oscars. Bless him!

Oh, and I don’t know if Bond producers did this for him, but Sam also posted a photo of his “Spectre” ring. Amazing.

Great. Now we will have to listen to the “beautiful death song of a dying cat” (shout out to one of the Celebitches; which one – I can’t remember right now). Ever since that comment, I can’t listen to him with a straight face.

  2. Naddie says:

I hate this guy’s voice and songs.

  3. Allie says:

I think its unfair to say Adele has body issues. She seems pretty content in her own skin. And she has a great voice, unlike Sam.

    • vanna says:

That’s what I’m thinking too. Adele’s pretty comfortable and confident in her own skin, that comparison stinks. I also think she’s more talented, but whatever. Skyfall (song) wasn’t her best work.

  4. Nancy says:

He will be magnificent. He is on my playlist every morning just because his voice is so soothing. Definitely a winner. #TeamSam

  5. Loopy says:

I like his voice, but I wish they could do something a little more up tempo, recent years have been depressing. Mark Ronson has earned a bond theme song by now.

    • Harryg says:

But I HATE the Uptown Funk or whatever it is, can’t stand it, when I hear those first burping sounds it starts with, I immediately smash the radio shut.

  6. Naya says:

I must be a terrible person but I think he is a sucky choice and I’m a little turned off by Spectre now. I never understood the buzz about this guy and stay with me in the hands of a better vocalist wouldn’t be the bland soulless elevator music that it is. If they had to go with a pop choice then Labrinth was over and above the better choice.

  7. leigh says:

So, so shrill BUT it will sell by the bucket-full.

I’ve seen like 2 Bond films and I don’t give a damn about the soundtrack so makes no difference to me.

  8. Mum says:

Clutching my pearls in anticipation already.

  9. CFY says:

Nope. Because to my ears, all his songs sound the same, and he seems rather one note? So I’m picturing him going “Bond, martinis, women, ghosts” to the tune of Stay with Me. I had thought they wanted Adele to do the theme song to Spectre too? Maybe (hopefully?) she’s too busy finishing off her album.

    He’s lost lot of weight

  11. Marianne says:

I like Sam Smith, so I can’t wait to hear it.

  12. Mia4S says:

Got me thinking: Best Bond songs? Live and let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me

    Best performance for a Bond song?Goldfinger. I mean…damn.

Adele was great but she’s had way better songs than Skyfall

Also, I liked You Know my Name from Casino Royale…yes I’m the one. 😉

  13. Pandy says:

I was just going to say I don’t have a clue who he is … then I read the Stay With Me comment above. Ugh. Well, here’s hoping the material is better than that song …

  14. JJ says:

He’s not “hard-scrabble working class”. His parents are brokers and bankers in the City of London. Him and Adele are really not all that similar, other than on a very glancing, superficial level.

    • avame says:

Rumor is that is mommy did funny ways with Money, like buying him some favours funny.
He is a nice singer, i guess
Nice but boring, always the same tone
Still don’t like him that much since he killed the Whitney Houston song in a very bad and bland way. Blech

  15. Bally says:

Which Tom Petty song does it sound like, Free Fallin’ or Don’t Come Around Here No More?

  16. kai says:

Hu? I read Radiohead/Thom Yorke were a possibility. Something like “Default” (AfP) could have been cool. But then I haven’t watched Bond since Pierce Brosnan, so what do I know. I didn’t care for Adele’s song.

  17. DesertReal says:

Chris Cornell from Soundgarden did…Casino Royale I believe?

  18. daniel says:

I still say that Elle King’s “Under the Influence” would have made a great bond song, it’s just sounds like a James Bond song, period. Take a listen, especially to the string section:

Duran Duran’s “A View to A Kill” was the best Bond theme. I thought Ellie Goulding was getting the Spectre song. Not sure how I feel about Sam Smith but I’m still giggling over the death song of the cat reference upthread.
