T.I. publicly cut ties with Iggy Azalea, who responded on Twitter, of course

This is an interesting development in the Iggy Azalea saga. T.I. (who now goes by “Tip,” but I’m stuck in my ways) gave this interview to Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show, and he’s publicly broken ties with his former protege. This is surprising because T.I. spent most of 2014 dealing with Iggy’s various beefs with other musicians. Nicki Minaj tossed shade Iggy’s way, and Snoop Dogg brutally attacked her looks. That wasn’t Iggy’s fault, but she’s made plenty of her own rude statements over the past few years.

All of this negativity reached a pitch fever when T.I. stepped in to defend Iggy from continued cultural appropriation claims after very valid statements from acclaimed rapper Q-Tip. His point was that Iggy did not care about rap’s historical and political origins, but Iggy swiftly dismissed Q-Top’s statements as “patronizing.” T.I. previously claimed Iggy couldn’t be racist despite her runaway slave master lyrics.

All along, I’ve believed T.I. only stood up for Iggy because he had money at stake. Now that Iggy’s career is on the downswing, and she’s still blaming everyone else, T.I. has had enough. He told Hot 97 that he and Iggy have not spoken in a long time, and they are no longer tied professionally. Why? T.I. says the Q-Tip interaction was a “breaking point” for how he saw Iggy. Then he said this:

“Man, I ain’t gonna make no excuses. But, look, though, the thing is, in her defense, she had a lot thrown at her at one time. Any human being anywhere gonna have a hard time adjusting … It’s very difficult to be the new kid and to be the butt of the jokes and to be the direction of all the negativity, you know what I mean? … [Iggy] came at a time when culturally, this nation — which she’s not from here — we were actually looking for a source for somewhere to place some pent-up aggression. And they just got it for no reason. In some cases, some stuff they brought it upon themselves, and in some cases, it was just the easiest place to put some pent-up aggression.”

On Iggy’s end, we have some conflicting information. Sources told TMZ that she was the one to break up with T.I.! Team Iggy said, “the plug was pulled long, long ago, and it was mutual.” How long ago? Sometime in 2013, and “friendship doesn’t require contracts.” This report seems odd, considering Iggy spent Thursday afternoon tweeting about T.I.’s interview. She doesn’t agree with how he spoke publicly about her, but there she is, tweeting about him. And she says everything is fine.

Lame-ass T.I. can have her, she’s already destroyed his career and reputation with his continued efforts to save her from everything.

Truth be told I don’t even think it was just the downswing, I think after the Britney Spears incident TI figured if Iggy was going to screw up such an easy business venture and get even Britney salty at her then there was no hope. At the end of the day someone has to WANT to work with you and there was no demand for Iggy.

    • mimif says:

Come on. How could he sever ties with this mad flow?

      • Kitten says:

        Never gets old.

        Seriously.

        Cannot be posted often enough.

Her rap voice though. 🙁 Ugh. She embarrasses me as a white person.

      • Guest1 says:

I’m the type of person that is constantly having second hand embarrassment. I got as far as “I got a house in the hill” before I turned it off. You can tell from the beginning that it was going to be awful.

      • Isa says:

Wow that was so awkward. I love how The host pretty much took her cup away from her.

      • Josefa says:

You know what’s even more funny? That’s not even freestyle. It’s one of her songs.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

        “I can’t rap over this hood-ass beat”

I swear in life…there’s like a sound effect that occurs in my mind when I know things are just gonna go so downhill…

Right after she said that, even already knowing what was coming, I sighed so deeply.

      • FLORC says:

I’ve never seen this! The Cringe!

        Josefa
That’s so funny. She can’t freestyle and her song can’t stand alone without a beat covering what it lacks.

      • kri says:

Oh dear god. I have not heard that before. How is it fair that we live in a world where people will remove a dog’s vocal abilities so they cannot bark, but this person is free forever to make those….sounds? Life really ain’t fair.

  2. Shambles says:

Lol. It seems like someone got blindsided. Schadenfreude.

  3. Anniefannie says:

OMG!! That thumbnail pic is really tragic! I’m stunned she did that to her face!

    • Kasia says:

She keeps on doing this to herself…because back in July or August I saw photos of her and I thought that her nose job looked a little bit better, as if it had settled post-surgery, but now she looks as if she had fresh work done to her face.

That being sad…what makes people do such things to themselves? Personally I considered her “original” face to be very interesting (she reminded me of a female version of David Duchovny). She must feel very insecure and that makes me sad. In fact what she does is self-mutilation.

      • Jem says:

My guess is that its a control issue. She can’t control the bad press or the criticism, but she can rearrange her face like Mrs. Potato Head. Or maybe it’s one of those rich people problems. Maybe both.

    • snakecharmer says:

you know what i love about her? not just that she coopted the names of other artists but what shines is her natural beauty, even more so than her timeless, epic musical talent. this girl is a diamond in the rough!!!

    • Zingara says:

I came to say exactly the same, Anniefannie. I’d never heard of her until a few months ago, but that’s likely because she left Australia when she was quite young, and I didn’t really follow show biz stuff. She looks bloody atrocious. She admits to the boob job (and the nose-?- not sure), but that’s it, as far as I know. In my experience, habitual liars always include a bit of truth in their stories. As for the rest of her life/career, ehhh…people like her come, and…then they go.

  4. Abbott says:

So radio isn’t the appropriate platform to discuss issues with someone on your team, but Twitter is?

  5. Bluebell says:

I like Iggy. I do feel all the criticism is a bit unfair. Some of it is justified but much of it isn’t.

    • mimif says:

Hold on a sec, I need to grab some popcorn…

    • Kitten says:

Really? I have yet to find one redeeming quality.

*yanks mimif’s popcorn out of her hands”

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Lol, I will say this. While there are times Iggy *could* have been the victim of people being cruel without proper justification (The Snoop Dogg incident for instance, but even that I think stemmed from people being at her for something and then going the easy route of just mocking her appearance) she really brought SO much of it on herself.

It was like she went out of her way to be offensive on every level constantly touting her non-existent skills, being racist, choosing to be fervently ignorant even to those who reached out in an attempt to help her, using sexism as a defense for all criticism and then when criticism came down for cultural appropriation she went from Iggy-Iggs Southern drawl rapper to Amethyst speaking eloquently in an Aussie accent.

She hit every tree branch on the way down including the Britney incident, Twitter was really her downfall. From racist tweets to constant bitching.

      • mimif says:

It seriously kills me that her name is Amethyst.

      • Kitten says:

MC Amethyst in the hizzay!/Girl ’bout to get bizzay/something-something shmizzay/Tizzay!/Plizzay!…yo.

I think that’s somewhere in the youtube clip you posted above, Mimif.

But seriously, let’s all yell at TI for making this chick think that she can rap.

    • Naya says:

Well, theres no accounting for taste so no doubt you are not the only one who likes her. Iggys problem is that she isnt worth the trouble she creates.

Later in this same interview, TI was about his other protégés, Travis Scott. Travis is another notorious big mouth with no filter but TI deals with him because “the sh*t isn’t bigger than the cat”. What TI means by that is that Travis isnt all beef and no substance.

    • Emma says:

It is Iggy’s fault because it’s how she handled the criticism that led to her downfall. I remember when Kesha came out people hated her far more than they ever hated Iggy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen hate for a celebrity that came anything close to what Kesha experienced. But Kesha didn’t whine. She didn’t play the victim. She remained positive. She was always supportive of other artists and never got into beefs or petty disputes and things changed. More and more people started to like her. If anyone did pick on her, people would respond and ask why hate on Kesha when she’s completely harmless. Critics started to give her music positive reviews. How you behave can have a big impact on how people start to see you. Iggy lost a lot of former fans who became annoyed by her lack of self awareness, Twitter beefs, and her refusal to respond to criticism in an intelligent and thoughtful manner. Every celebrity gets hate. It’s how you handle it that matters.

      • mimif says:

Well said. I was always impartial to Kesha but actually started to like her because of the way she responded to all the negativity being hurled at her.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Yup and on the Ke$ha front I think Iggy’s mistake was trying to be something she is NOT.

She’s not a hard Southern based rapper but that was her whole identity.

Ke$ha, Gwen Stefani…I was even thinking about this with Macklemore. He doesn’t write songs or create an identity that isn’t his. His songs are playful and about topics he’s passionate about and are authentic to him. Conversely Eminem comes across as a hard rapper but his hardness comes from his own blatant honesty about his past child abuse, his position as a white man in rap, his views on American culture etc. Yeah both men are white but they’re also miles apart in persona and style BUT they’re true to themselves.

With Iggy you always got the sense she was ready to ditch her ‘persona’ the second things got dicey. Whenever she did interviews with hip hop stations she was growling in that Southern drawl but when it came time for Jimmy Kimmel or a more pop based station suddenly she was all prim and proper Amethsyt. That disconnect kinda killed it for people who wanted to like her.

      • WRO says:

I read reviews for Iggy’s The New Classic and most reviewers complained she didn’t tell her story. They said moving from Australia to America at 16 is a good story that she should’ve told. She could be authentic and have success but instead she chose to put on an act that was offensive to African Americans and then ranted on Twitter when people called her out for it.

    • Wren says:

I used to like her, but not so much anymore. If she had just shut her mouth and not responded to anything and everything the worst possible way, I’d probably still like her. She could have had a solid career as a supporting, featured artist. Her bit was the only reason I liked that Ariana Grande song they played incessantly a year or so back. Maybe I just have a soft spot for her because we have the same body type (or used to have, I suppose) and you don’t see that too often in entertainment.

      • WRO says:

I expected her to be a female Pitbull. It seemed like everyone wanted to work with her and she could have had a long successful career like he’s had. But she threw it all away because she couldn’t ignore her haters or deal with valid criticism.

  6. Farah says:

She criticized her for airing out her grievance on twitter, and goes on twitter? Man, this girl doesn’t have a clue. I think it’s too late for T.I he’s forever branded as an Uncle Tom on most Urban sites and black twitter. A lot of people lost respect for him because of his association with the unapologetic racist.

    • Kitten says:

She put him in a terrible position. I think he was just trying to protect his investment….Poor dude didn’t anticipate that his investment would turn out to be a disrespectful, bigoted loud-mouth.

    • snakecharmer says:

dude she must have no PR people. i would confiscate all ner devices

  7. Loopy says:

My Word this girl can never keep it shut, one thing about Beyoncé I appreciate is that she never lets anyone see her break a sweat. Water off a ducks back smh

  8. Farah says:

I do agree that the backlash against Iggy was due to poor timing. After the Macklemore thing, and continual harassment of black people, Iggy became the prime example of white mediocrity and white privilege.

Also I don’t think Iggy being Australian gives her pass. Racism happens all over the world. She should use her common sense. Hell, Australia is extremely racist too.

    • De says:

As an Australian, I 100% agree with you – it doesn’t give her a pass at all.

    • mimif says:

Prime example of white mediocrity and white privilege…

And because time and time again, she’s proven herself to be a bigoted arsehole.

  9. leigh says:

FOr the love of god iggy stop talking. Someone needs to take her phones away from. She is the one shooting herself fin the foot. The best thing she could do for her career is let the music do all the talking. No interviews. No Twitter, no nothing.

  10. Greenieweenie says:

Never realized how tiny he is.

  11. Greenieweenie says:

Iggy, to me, doesn’t get how America works. It isn’t NZ or Australia. This is a huge market and it’s for professionals. And professionals don’t take to Twitter to personally respond to everything. Or expect the public to magically forget social media. She needs to learn what an image is, learn who Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice were, get a sense of American history, and stop claiming understanding because you watched a few US TV shows or spent a few years in the States. Up your game or get eaten–why do you think so few British singers make headway in the US while relatively more Canadian ones do? Familiarity.

  12. funcakes says:

I loved her music when it first came out. I was on her side when other musicians bashed her. Then she made the mistake of interacting instead of rising above it all by concentrating on the music.

  13. Harrison says:

Are some of the harsh criticisms leveled at her because she’s white?

    • mimif says:

      *exits immediately*

    • Kitten says:

*jumps up and down, waves hand frantically*

Oh! Oh! I know the answer to this one!!:

      NO.

Mimif come back! ..and please bring the vodka.
      We’re gonna need it.

    • FingerBinger says:

      No. It’s because she’s a lousy rapper.

    • Emma says:

To some extent yes. There was a feeling her act was too much like a minstrel act. If she had rapped in an Australian accent instead of using an imitation of a black, Southern accent, I don’t think people would have been so upset. I can’t stand her but she’s honestly not a bad rapper. She’s not great either but she’s pretty decent. If she had understood and acknowledged why people were offended I think her career would still be going strong. Instead she whined about sexism and never seemed to comprehend what the problem was.

    • Palapa says:

Yes, you’re right. It IS because she’s white and not because she said racist crap about Asians (saying an “asian bitch is about to learn English today” for taking her seat) or the racist body-shaming about Mexican women (“Mexicans have the box body locked down” when her cellulite on her fake butt is off limits tho) or the derogatory slang against homosexuals ( I’m not even going to repeat that garbage) OR because she was petty enough to start beef with one of the most harmless people in the industry, Britney!

Yes, it’s ALL because she’s white and zero to do with her obvious racism, bigotry or inability to play well with others. Never mind her gross minstrel-like performances…ugh

    • Bob Loblaw says:

For sure. If she were black and co-opting her rap schtick there would not be this hullabaloo about her. She is only an issue because of her race combined with her atrocious personality and senseless yammering. People like to pretend racism only exists in one specific form but it doesn’t, racism exists in all groups, as does bias. Why should anyone care if she does her crap rap? Rap is not some pure art form that will be forever tarnished by some clueless Aussie and the pile on mentality against her does nothing to persuade me. She’s an ass, but no one needs to boo-hoo because she’s not “black enough” to rap, anyone putting that idea out there is only reinforcing racist notions. I’m not defending her, she’s clearly a jackass, but racism is racism, no matter who is espousing it.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Damn, no wonder you’re a supporter of her’s. You display the same passionate lack of knowledge but fierce defensiveness and argument.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

Did you read my comment? Great that you chime in but your implication that I’m a fan is way off base, can’t be a fan if you’ve literally never heard any of her nonsense. My point is about perception and perceived racism, maybe it does reflect a lack of knowledge, but your insults and half-baked notions about “fierce defensiveness” are hardy persuasive.

  14. LauraH says:

You know when you’re really emotional and a relationship isn’t working and you go out have too much wine have a low moment and send long rambling texts that you just regret and cringe at and get so annoyed you sent?

I feel like that is her entire Twitter. She needs a career equivalent of giving a good friend your phone so you don’t embarrass yourself. Basically, PR!

If she doesn’t see that she must be totally arrogant or delusional and that just stops me having any sympathy for her.

  15. Adrien says:

She looks like The Mask, nit the Jim Carrey movie but the Eric Stoltz /Cher movie.

    • FingerBinger says:

She doesn’t look like Rocky Dennis. She looks like the characters from white chicks.

    • Adrien says:

Omg! Just found out the character Eric Stoltz played was a real person afflicted with lionitis. And apparently he was a greatl guy. Damn, now I feel bad comparing Fizzy to him. So sorry.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Yeah I sadly only found that out this year and was shocked.

Poor guy did seem like an amazing person from everything I’ve read about him.

      • FingerBinger says:

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the film but doesn’t it start by saying based on a true story. How do you not know Rocky Dennis wasn’t a real person?

  16. Bridget says:

Iggy is awful. But I really dislike that TI had no problem with Iggy until she stopped making money. She was ALWAYS an idiot, it wasn’t something that was just sprung on TI. He inflicted her on us, and only now that she’s radioactive does he have an issue with the things she says.

    • Kitten says:

I know what you’re saying, but that’s business you know? She said that she’s still signed to his label and if that’s true, she’s f*cking lucky. A normal pleb like us would get fired for that sh*t.

      • Bridget says:

My point is, she’s always been awful. She’s always been a jerk, but he was happy to defend her when she was riding high and making money. It’s only now that she’s been wholesale rejected that he has an issue with her and the things she says and does.

  17. hadlyB says:

TIP? Seriously? Where do they come up with these stupid nicknames?

    Just use your real name.

    • Illyra says:

“T.I.” sounds a lot better than “Tip”. “Tip” sounds like one of those silly WASP nicknames.

      • pinetree13 says:

AGREED! Except my mind went to the gutter immediately. As in TIP of you-know-what. Com’on…surely I can’t be the only one that thought that?!?!?

  18. blogdiz says:

Lets face it , Iggy played her poor me , everybody’s picking on me cuz I’m a talented blonde girl rapper , they’re jealous etc, and it worked( even on this site)
The mainstream tide only turned on her after she started sh*t with Brittany

  19. Reece says:

    Holy Sh…! That’s not just a boob job. 😮

  20. anon33 says:

SHE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW WHO Q-TIP WAS AT FIRST. How are you gonna try to be a rapper in the US and you don’t even know Tribe????

    Take several seats, Fancy.

  21. Gina says:

Iggy is talentless and stupid and I never liked her. But I get how confusing it is for non-American to deal with all this “cultural appropriation/white privilege/white supremacy stuff” (which has been blown to ridiculous proportion. Like people are judged for hairstyles, lol) . You are like “really, privilege? I kinda left my friends and my family and try to survive in new world”

    • teacakes says:

yeah, she’s totally unfamiliar with the concept of cultural appropriation or racial privilege because there are no black or Asian people in Australia and it’s not like Australia has its own native population that gets harassed and discriminated against, or anything, right?

      Oh, wait……

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

You want to come to America to work but be totally unaware of how the country works and how to appeal to your audience? No wonder her career died so fast.

Also all this ‘stuff’ has been explained a dozen times on this site. I feel bad for people who think because they don’t want to recognize racial issues it doesn’t exist. Those who choose not to learn will be left behind with the other angry dinosaurs.

      • Gina says:

you are missing the point. It’s NOT ok to harras, discriminate against, assault or offend ANY person under ANY circumstances. Every normal person knows that, i don’t even get why we are still discussing it.
But all this stuff about “cultural appropriation” is not about civil rights or human rights, it’s just a motive to complain.
And I don’t think it’s applicable to you if your ancestors have nothing to do slavery in any way. Why should you apologise for mistakes of others?
My problem with “cultural appropriation” and “white privilege” is that it automatically means that EVERY white person is guilty of some crimes against people of color and every white person is privileged which is nonsense.
Especially when it’s all about the damn hairstyle.
P.s. Still dislike Iggy and think she’s dumb as hell

      • Gina says:

My nation was enslaved about only two generations ago (but we never had slaves OR African colonies ), it’s sad part of a history, but it’s not the reason to manipulate and call everyone a bigot.
+ at the time of slavery the population of USA was 10 times smaller and I feel like at least 30% of people of color nowadays don’t have any ancestors that were enslaved, like Barack Obama (whose father was born in Africa and just came to USA, made him and left)

      • Illyra says:

Yeah, being born white is almost like “original sin” for many, something to apologize for. Even dirt-poor hillbillies are said to have “white privilege”. Bizarre.

  22. Elisha says:

So….TI is trying to have the best of both worlds, appeasing the “it’s appropriation” crowd while encouraging Iggy to appropriate and paying her for it. Ok then, TI.

  23. kitty-bye says:

I don’t really know much about these two people however, don’t many actors/singers have “stage voices” vs their normal voice. I remember meeting talented Cyndi Lauper as a youth and was shocked in the difference between hers.

  24. LAK says:

Someone needs to take away her twitter. Silence will be golden in her case.

  25. jelynn says:

Side note but he was known as TIP early in his career. T.I.is the newer incarnation.

  26. EM says:

I can’t believe these people even have careers with the crap they label as music.
