Claire Danes in chained Prada at the Emmys: beautiful or budget?

wenn22910772

There were a few women who sort of blended into each other on the Emmys red carpet. Maybe it was because so many ladies were SO BLONDE and so melty from the heat, but I kept confusing Claire Danes for January Jones. Also, it was really funny to me that Claire was the second major actress on the red carpet to have chain details on her dress, and when Ryan Seacrest told her that Taraji Henson had chains too, Claire had a moment, just a flash, where she looked slightly pissed. She thought she was going to be the only one with chains!

Anyway, Claire’s dress was Prada. I’ve gotten to the point where I really, really do not like Prada’s gowns (unless Lupita Nyong’o is wearing them). This dress is sort of a study in how to f—k up a perfectly simple and classic design. If this had just been a simple, sequined slipdress, it would have been lovely and Claire might even be one of my favorites. But the chains just take this to a really fug level. First of all, the chains are GIANT. They’re, like, industrial chains. Second of all… I just hate her hair. It ruins the look. Celebitchy called this “Republican spouse hair” and she’s right. Also: Hugh Dancy’s haircut is awful.

Here’s Morena Baccarin (who isn’t on Homeland anymore but whatever) in Reem Acra. This is… bad. It looks cheap.

Nazanin Boniadi from Homeland… beautiful girl, horrible dress. She was on the red carpet really early too, and people were like “WTF?” to this Stephane Rolland boob-drape dress. Why would you do this to a young woman going to the Emmys?!

I like the chains. The color is gorgeous. I despise the scoopneck.

Boniadi has to be a contender for Worst Dressed. Illusion netting needs to be killed with fire.

    • mia girl says:

The scoopneck didn’t flatter her, but I didn’t hate the dress. In fact, I kinda liked it.

    • sarah says:

@Matador, I totally agree, I love the dress but the scoop neck creates a shortening of her (crazy long, in a good way) torso. I’m also SO OVER SPRAY TAN, IT NEEDS TO DIE! It was so obvious who had spray tanned because it was literally melting off of them on the carpet. The fake tan also makes Claire’s skin look gross.

      • Dr M says:

I love the dress. But on CD it looks terrible. And her HAIR!! Sack the hair stylist. A high ponytail (with extension help) and some great smoky makeup would have made this look the bomb). She really does look like a Republican spouse who got to carried away with the Aqua-Net.

  2. dr mantis toboggan says:

Claire’s dress is the worst of the night.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I agree that it’s terrible (though who could out-bad Heidi Klum’s Yellow-Fever gown?) – too bad, because the color is gorgeous on Claire, but the chains are SOOO BOGUS! (Prada has always seemed tone-deaf to me…no one else can make so many lovely women look so ugly. And Claire’s hair is almost funny. No, not almost.

    • OverFirstAve. says:

Heidi Klums is worst of the night.

I didn’t dislike Claire’s dress. It was just the chains were odd addition.. I didn’t like Claire’s hair though.

    • Matador says:

Not by a long shot is Danes the worst.

  3. Singtress says:

I have nightgowns that look like the red dress.
    And. Yeah, they were cheap.

    • Tara says:

Pretty though. At least she wore a pretty, pretty nighty to the Emmys. That’s more than be said for most of them. Craptabulous night fashion-wise IMO.

  4. Dtab says:

Morena Baccarin’s dress is too try hard, like a slip from a 1980s TV show where the mistress is lounging on the foot of a bed and the wife comes home to catch her……is she trying out for a dynasty remake??

Claire Danes, looked better walking away than from the front….the front was just unflattering.

  5. minx says:

    All bad.

  6. snakecharmer says:

claire is so stunning! that dress did not flatter her in color or cut. the other ladies looked reeally beautiful

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

I really like her hair. It’s very 1950s ice princess on her. It’s not even that I’m over the moon about it on her so much as I remember her from her So Called Life beginnings and it’s such a surprising change on her that I feel like, wow! Perhaps it’s a little orange though.

The dress however is the kind of material that makes your boobs look dried up and your stomach biggish even if neither of those things are objectively the case.

      • Shambles says:

I agree that the hair isn’t even bad, it’s just completely wrong for this look. She needed edge for this. Slicked back, a la Kristin Stewart.

      • Esmom says:

Yes, with that dress, edgy hair is the only way to go. Her hairstylist really blew it.

      • gavin says:

@weareallmadeofstars. I think you are right that she was going for a 50s ice princess vibe with the hair. The dress is a play on a nautical, preppy theme. The red and blue stripes of a Breton shirt. The chains and grommets representing ropes on sails. I understand her instinct with the hair, but I think it was the right era, wrong tone. The dress juxtaposes hard and soft, formal and sporting, but the hair comes off as too stiff (literally and figuratively). Something a bit more playful, like a bouncy ponytail (think vintage Barbie), would have been a better match for this unique dress.

  7. We Are All Made of Stars says:

Man, I’ve only read two posts so far and it looks like it’s shaping up to be a night of showcasing dresses that got people thrown off Project Runway thus destroying their careers in fashion forever. Well, you would have thought it would have destroyed their careers in fashion forever. 🙂

  8. Nev says:

Loved her dress!! A little Prada, a lot Versace though. Haha

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

The second two are awful. Claire Danes is very pretty but there’s something so awkward looking about her. I don’t know if it’s her posture or body language, I can’t put my finger on it, but she always looks so uncomfortable in a gown.

  10. Crumpet says:

Hugh Dancy – the chemo haircut. And Claire’s dress looks so budget there are no words. The fabric, the drape, the cut – all awful. My take away is it looks like the first dress I ever made for my Barbie on my mom’s sewing machine.

  11. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Nazanin Boniadi’s dress is just awful. Why would anyone look at it and think: “it’s the perfect look for the Emmy’s – everyone will love the novice-nun-veil-superglued-to-the boob look”?

On a sidenote – the way in which her description was worded, with the focus on her being young and being a beautiful girl, made me think she must be in her early 20’s, which was confusing, because she played Barney’s fiancee on HIMYM years ago and already looked around 30. But no – she’s 35.

  12. lucy2 says:

Nice color on Claire, but don’t care for the style. Morena’s looks like lingerie. Nazanin’s is terrible. Three beautiful and talented ladies, but their stylists did them no favors here.

  13. Tig says:

I liked the color of Claire’s dress, but that’s about it. I will be reading these posts to see if there were any that DID look good- tuned in late and so many looked so bad.

  14. Giddy says:

I fantasized that somewhere there was a drawbridge missing its chains because CD stole them for her dress. Those chains and their grommets were huge, and even though they were shiny and golden, they looked industrial in their size. Morena Baccarin’s dress really did look like a cheap nylon nightgown. That was unfortunate because she is so beautiful.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I personally think Claire’s dress would have been almost a win if the side chains and grommets were not there. Chains as straps only would have been much better, imho.

  15. Nancy says:

I liked the dress. Her style, hair, seems so simple, it was nice to see her in something edgy. I do, however, like her better in Angela Chase red hair.

  16. boredblond says:

From the Prada dept at Home Depot..

  17. Qat says:

Yikes! Three more bad dresses. The white dress is an extremely poorly designed and crafted mess. That woman is beautiful, but even she can’t pull the dress off. Dane’s dress looks like a coat of armor with chain link straps. It swallow her petite figure. Her makeup is really harsh and her hair looks like a helmut- this does not help her situation. The red dress looks like lingerie. The color is great on the actress.

  18. serena says:

Claire Danes’ dress has too many faults: first it makes her seems really flat, second it gives the impression (true or not, I don’t know) that she has no waist at all and finally those chains are really awfully giant. Let’s not forget that horrible haircut/style.. how would anyone in their right mind hire a million dollar stylist to do that?

  19. shannon says:

Claire has done the fake bob look before – not sure why she would choose to do it again. She and Hugh look done. That said, Angela Chase forever!

  20. vauvert says:

Both Morena and Nazanin are such gorgeous ladies, but their outfits are horrible. Morena’s colour is great, but the style is Frederick’s of Hollywood polyester 70’s glamour. That dress needs to o away and hide. And she should really grow out her hair, I remember how stunning she looked in Firefly (I know, get over it, it has been a decade…)

  21. QQ says:

LORDY!!! Nazanin’s dress is horribleness, Claire just looks Like a dried up crone between the extreme slimness, the Boehner coloring and the old timey socialite hair..

    • Christin says:

Among other things, Nazanin’s dress looks like a cut up panty hose was loosely pasted to it. Yet I guess compared to her days with Tommy Boy, the dress probably wasn’t all that bad.

  22. jc says:

The scientologists seeking revenge on Nazanin Boniadi, that is the only reason I can see for that dress.

  23. DavidBowie says:

Wow, I’ve seen nicer looking paper towels at the grocery store than that awful, awful white dress. I feel so bad for Nazanin.

  24. Dancinnancy says:

Claire and Janury have looked alike since they both had the same nose job. I have to look closely.

  25. Cinderella says:

Claire is too tiny to support chains.

  26. Tiffany says:

Morena may no longer be on Homeland but she is on Gotham, which airs on Fox. Soooo…legit reason to be there.

  27. Stacey says:

I like Claire’s dress, but it would have been improved with the scoop neck being changed to a deep V, the chains are fine, but they should have known when to stop with just the shoulder chains, and killed the side chains as they look uncomfortable and bulky. Clair’s hair is indeed “Republican Spouse” and it’s way too light.

  28. redd says:

Are you sure this isn’t January Jones, circa Mad Men? With that horribly dated, one-color blonde Bob – yikes! While I love that Ms. Danes has stopped stealing other women’s husbands, she could stand to spend a little more time with a fashion mag in her hands, under the care of a good colorist somewhere. BLECH!

  29. FingerBinger says:

Claire’s hair ,makeup and dress age her. That’s not a good look.

  30. Tiffany says:

Hugh’s awful haircut is the final nail that Hannibal is done. *sigh*

  31. kri says:

Apparently there was some sort of Nino effect and Claire Danes walked through a toxic Trump Smog cloud that blew in from the East. What in the hell was her makeup (graffiti) artist not thinking!!?

  32. cakecakecake says:

I love Claire’s work but not that dress. The color is very pretty though.

  33. taxi says:

Claire’s hair is very unattractive & the dress isn’t good either. Morena had to wear a cheap try-hard nightgown? Yuck. The white outfit is absurd. Does the long flap blow open in wind?

  34. suziekew says:

I couldn’t get past the hair on Clare to even look at the dress. That’s the worst hair I’ve ever seen on a smart, youngish actress. Why oh why would she want to look like her grandmother? Her hair stylist should be fired but I suspect that it was Clare’s decision.

  35. captain says:

I like dress, chains and hair, really do. I don’t like her make up or facial expression, I’m not sure which one. From the back she looks better.

Red dress needs a long brown cigarette with a mouthpiece. And stockings.

  36. amilue says:

Hugh Dancy needs to keep his Will Graham curls always. This George Clooney/Caesar haircut makes me very sad. 🙁

  37. siri says:

    Is she pregnant?

  38. Sammy says:

Hugh Dancy’s cute curls are one of his attributes that make him so attractive. Why the hell would he cut those adorable locks off? I hope the hair grows out soon.

  39. Beth_12 says:

Claire Danes is not aging well. It could be the hair color, which is totally wrong for her coloring.
