Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy for Veep for the fourth year in a row

The 67th Emmy Awards Pressroom

Veep took home a bunch of Emmys last night, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, which went to Tony Hale, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fourth year in a row, or basically every single year the show has been on the air. It was Drefus’s seventh Emmy overall. She’s an incredible comedic actress but I feel sorry for Amy Poehler especially, as Poehler has been nominated every year since 2010 in this category for Parks & Rec and she’s never won. This was her last shot.

Poehler poked fun at this by wearing a hoodie and sunglasses while this category was announced. She pretended to nap as Dreyfus gave her speech. It was hard to ignore as Dreyfus cracked a couple decent jokes, especially her opener in which she claimed to be quoting the show but then revealed that Donald Trump had actually said that line. “I think it would be appropriate at this moment to quote our American politics show. ‘What a great honor it must be for you to honor me tonight.’ No, wait, no, I’m so sorry, Donald Trump said that.” I checked and she’s right of course.

Dreyfus wore a classic, simple one-shoulder Safiyaa black dress accessorized with some diamond statement jewelry. She looks incredible.

Amy Poehler was also all in black, she had on a Michael Kors dress with side cutouts. She looks very fit but I think this look is kind of ruined by messy styling. Plus she looks so different to me with dark hair.

Edie Falco, like Amy, has been nominated in this category every year for the last five years. She won the last time in 2010 for Nurse Jackie and has three other Emmys for her work on The Sopranos. She was in this loose pleated Prada gown which just looks like a nightgown. Something nice: it was probably comfortable in the heat and her hair and makeup look great.

    She is a wonderful actress.

    • Denisemich says:

@Qat agree. She is consistently a good actress. Veep is a show you can watch multiple times and see an episode very differently.

No one plays a narcissistic bitch like Julia

    • whybenice says:

Hat’s off to Julia for another win, but Amy stole it. She is long overdue.

      • Anne tommy says:

Never seen Veep but Amy is great – as is the whole cast – in Parks and Rec. The Emmys seem to gave a pattern of fixating on a number of shows and giving them multiple awards over a period of years. If I saw Jim Parsons one more time I was going to scream. Other shows – Community for example – never get a look in. Not saying the winners aren’t good, can’t make the call if I haven’t seen them but is this really the first year that Jon Hamm was best in a drama?

    • Jib says:

I loved her on Seinfeld, but I have watched a few seasons of VEEP and I just don’t get it. Whining for 1/2 hour isn’t entertaining to me. I don’t find her funny in it at all. I’m flummoxed.

  2. dr mantis toboggan says:

I think Amy poehler looked great. That darker hair really suits her.

  3. Tiffany says:

As long as JLD keeps getting work, she is most likely to win. I think she is one of the best comedic actors working today.

    • Alice says:

      Agree. JLD is wonderful.

    • Liberty says:

Agree. She’s amazing. I hope you saw her with James Gandolfini in “Enough Said” too.

    • funcakes says:

I second that sentiment. Glad to see a mature actress still working and kicking butt in the emmy department.

    • Kloops says:

I think this is true. I’m usually not a fan of repeat winners. I like to see it mixed up a bit, and that’s still true, but JLD is just so damn good. She gets better with age in every way. She is phenomenal.

    • emma says:

      the Meryl Streep of comedy.

I do think she’s a great actress, but I don’t understand how the same show can win four times in a row. Does the voting block watch other shows? Do they take into account other things besides their personal taste?

  4. Bridget says:

I love Veep and JLD is fantastic, but I really wish Amy had won for Parks & Rec. Though both ladies look lovely.

    • lucy2 says:

Same – I was rooting for Amy, she deserved recognition for all seasons of P&R, but I can’t argue with JLD winning. Veep is great as is she. And wow, she looks amazing. I love how she always goes for very simple, modern looks.

  5. OverFirstAve. says:

Good actress but the show just seems so terrible, I can’t get through one episode and I’ve tried many times, because I adore her as a comedic actress.

I’m always surprised when Veep or Parks and Rec wins anything. I just don’t get those shows.

And Amy Poehler I usually love her humour but she was so annoying in the audience. So attention seeking.

    P.S. Is that Edie Falco?

    • Matador says:

Julia always plans something with the other nominated ladies/colleagues for that category. No question she knew what Amy was going to do and was in on the joke. I think it was last year, Tony Hale followed her up on stage and fed her the thank-yous in Gary-like fashion, while Anna Chlumsky typed away on her mobile device, ignoring them both, from the audience.

Update: That was 2013. Last year was her big smooch with Bryan Cranston on the way up to the podium.

    • Bishg says:

Sorry but if you don’t get Veep or Parks and Rec, I’m not your friend.
(just kidding, but seriously those shows are both amazing).

      • OverFirstAve. says:

Hate Parks and Rec… Just can’t watch it, think it’s terrible.

What’s going on w Falcos face? Is that Botox , fillers chin work?

        Julia looks stunning,wow.

    • Katenotkatie says:

Amy has a chapter about award shows in her book- she says that she likes to plan a bit with the other actresses as a way of distracting from nerves and making the whole thing more fun for everyone, that’s all!

I wish Amy had won because Parks and Rec is everything, but I love JLD too, so I’m torn.

    • Big Foot's Love Child says:

Gasp!!! Although I watched the first episode of Veep a couple times before finally buckling down and getting into it. I think it’s one of ode shows that takes an initial investment but after that it is amazing and worth every second.

    • Jib says:

I just said upthread that I hate VEEP!! I watched a season, and came away thinking it was one of the stupidest shows with the most shallow main characters ever. Not funny at all. And I adored Elaine in Seinfeld~~

  6. embertine says:

The side cutout trend is everywhere this year and it needs to die. Well done! You have abs. This style still makes you look like a floating torso.

  7. Matador says:

JLD really did deserve to win again, even though generally repeat winners annoy me. With Ianucci leaving the show, I suspect there will be a decline and the field will be more open next year to a serious challenger.

  8. Astrid says:

Julie was best dressed last night IMO

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Julia looks beautiful. I saw her in person once and she is really tiny.

    • Jib says:

Most of these actresses are tiny. The bobble heads came from these women – very small with big, huge heads in comparison. They look good on the screen, but very odd in person.

    • imqrious2 says:

A couple of years ago, when VEEP just started, she and her family were coming out of Hillstone’s Steak House (in Santa Monica) when my family and I were going in. I stopped and smiled at her, she smiled back, and of course, I just had to tell her I was a big fan. She chatted with me for a few minutes until the valet brought their car; she was funny and gracious, and yes, VERY tiny: about my height (5’2″) and if she weighed 100 lbs soaking wet, that’d be a lot! VERY petite!!

  10. QQ says:

Julia and Tony Totally deserved those awards they are incredible in VEEP That show is everything!

    • Katenotkatie says:

Tony Hale deserves the Emmy just for Gary’s range of terrified/perplexed facial expressions. And no one throws an obscene tantrum like my girl JLD.

  11. Chelly says:

She also won a few Emmys for New Adventures of Old Christine & it was cancelled its 5th season. And I believe she had another show before that that lasted about 1 or 2 seasons before getting cancelled. Her shows are so funny & she delivers such comedic work but it seems like her shows never carry beyond 5 seasons (no matter how well they seem to do) & i HOPE this show continue for at least another 4 seasons cause like her others, its just that good

  12. Tina says:

Veep is amazing and JLD is amazing in it. But Iannucci HAS to come back to the UK and do more Thick of It because between Corbyn and Pig-gate, UK politics is beyond parody at the moment.

  13. K says:

JLD complete deserved that Emmy but it is just wrong that Amy doesn’t have one. She should have won all those years fey took it home. veep is brilliant and deserves all the awards it gets, the hard part of comedy is there are a few shows that do and this year some of the deserving shows weren’t even nominated. Really need modern family to stop getting nominated so good shows can.

Thrilled for JLD (who was one of the best dressed) but sad for Amy.

    • korra says:

Tina Fey biased here. She deserved it. Amy does too, not sure why JLD deserves her emmy over Amy but Fey doesn’t.

One of my all time favorite JLD moments is when she read this angry tweet on Jimmy Kimmel. Her laugh gets me everytime. “Oh look at me. I’m Julia Louis Dreyfus I was on Seinfield the show about white people eating pickles and sh-t. F-ck you bitch.”

      • K says:

I don’t think Tina is that good and honestly 30 Rock was incredibly overrated in my opinion. When it was brilliant it was brilliant but that wasn’t consistent it was consistently so so and had moments of brilliance. Plus Amy can carry a show like JLD and fey was carried. Fey is a great writer but not actress.

      • korra says:

I mean that’s fine you’re entitled to your opinion, but you’re making it sound like Tina Fey won every time she was nominated and was completely undeserving. She won the acting award once and didn’t win it again even for her final season. On top of which Parks and Rec wasn’t even a show when Tina Fey won for lead actress. JLD won it every year when both Fey and Poehler were nominated. I don’t disagree that Tina is the better writer and Amy the better performer, but it’s not like it’s Kim Kardashian up there with Amy.

I also don’t know if I’d call 30 Rock overrated and not say the same for Parks and Rec. Parks and Rec is both a critical and commercial success. 30 Rock was just a critical success, which is a goddamn shame. That show is brilliant and has some great one liners. But maybe I’m just a girl who relates to liz lemon. We both have a friend named tom, a weird foot problem, and dream of having it all.

      • OverFirstAve. says:

        Loved 30rock

  14. leah says:

Dreyfus is the Meryl Streep of comedy acting!

  15. Wallflower says:

Love JLD in the Adventures of Old Christine versus New Christine. Haven’t saw Veep yet but plan to see it. Love Amy Poehler as well and felt sorry for her.

  16. redd says:

Amy, Jesus Christmas – GET YOUR HAIR DONE FOR THE RED CARPET. Looks like she got out of bed and got dressed.

  17. taxi says:

Amy’s hair isn’t a flattering color & side cut-outs look better on a very taut midriff. Edie’s hair & makeup look great – much better than her usual event style.

  18. Lisa says:

Edie, my darling! She looked fantastic. Disappointed that Nurse Jackie didn’t win.

Poor Amy P; nobody has told her she’s white.

  19. HoustonGrl says:

I’m sorry, but Poehler is just not that funny to me. Her delivery is really systematic and predictable. She may be a better writer than actress. Dreyfuss deserved this…and she looks fantastic. I think Poehler’s demeanor during the speech was unprofessional, not something Dreyfuss would ever do.

  20. iheartgossip says:

JLD is like Jen A. They play their sitcom (Elaine or Rachel) in every role. I’ve watched VEEP – it’s okay, but TO ME – it’s just Elaine all pumped up on a manic caffiene high.

  21. Debutante says:

I hate to go against what everyone else says on here about Amy Poehler, but I don’t find her all that funny. I like her, I enjoy watching her, and I was a fan of Parks & Rec, but I just don’t think she has a quarter of the comedic talent that Julia L. D. has.
JLD totally deserves her wins. She is one funny Bitch on VEEP. Very talented lady and has been for years.

    • RedWeatherTiger says:

I agree with you. I like Amy. I admire and respect her. But in that part on that show, she doesn’t hold a candle to JLD on VEEP, and that’s just the simple truth the Emmy voters confirmed.

  22. ichsi says:

Call me weird but I really like the Prada gown. It looks simple and elegant and most importantly: different.

  23. Rubber Chicken says:

    Valerie Cherish was ROBBED.

  24. parissucksliterally says:

I absolutely love this woman. She is consistently hilarious in every role she plays. She also looks amazing. This is aging gracefully – she looks sexy as hell, but always tasteful.
