Taraji P. Henson’s Emmys look was a case of forcing the audience the love her even when the look really isn’t that strong. Taraji wore this custom Alexander Wang gown which… in these photos, I really dislike it. I was sort of okay with it on the E! Red Carpet show though, you know why? Because Taraji was having fun with it, she was enjoying herself and you could tell that she loved her dress and that made me like it more. But, as I said, look through these photos. It’s actually a bad dress. Alexander Wang could have done much better. Between the cutout, the sheer skirt and the chain straps, there are just too many bad gimmicks here. Also: I’m not really loving the bob cut and the center part on Taraji. She’s beautiful, but NO.
Sarah Paulson’s Prabal Gurung didn’t even register with me on the red carpet, and now that I’m looking at photos of the dress… it still isn’t sparking anything. Like, I’m really looking at this and I have no feelings about it either way. She looks fine and/or boring.
Here’s what I love about Frances McDormand: everything. I love that she has no f—ks to give. I love that she’s basically in Amish couture. I love that she probably isn’t even wearing makeup. I love that when she won the Emmy, her speech was “My colleagues Jane and Lisa have already given the thank-yous that need to be said. We’re all here because of the power of the stories that need to be told. Sometimes that’s enough. Thank you.” And that was it. BOSS MOVE.

She is a beautiful woman, but I really really hate cutouts in a dress. Just stupid. Although I suppose the extra ventilation was welcome in the heat.
Taraji looks stunning, she is such a beautiful woman.
Love Francis, she is such a standout talent in Hollywood, love her.
Sarah Paulson’s dress is beautiful, I love her style, she never dissapoints.
Tara is really beautiful but I’m tired of the transparent skirt part of the dress in Hollywood. The top is bad too
I find Henson’s dress horrible.
Agreed. It looks trashy. Chains, cut out & see-thru lace long skirt? Maybe good for a dominatrix or submissive?
this!!
Agreed. One, maybe two of those traits you mention, but not all three. Too much. It’s not flattering. She’s a very pretty woman, but no need to show it all off because it just takes away from her.
I heart you Frances.
I saw Olive Kitteridge when it premired on HBO. Frances is a great actress not afraid to play unlikeable roles. Olive Kitteridge was a good mini-series but the character was not likeable.
She plays it like she doesn’t give two f but she is married to a Coen Brother. Probably doesn’t have to give two f’s.
I loved the book. Would you recommend the mini-series? I wouldn’t say the character in the book was likable, either. I had some compassion for her at times, but didn’t like her.
Hated the mini-series; can’t believe it won so many awards. The FD character is so unlikeable, the husband is a fool & you just wonder why all the other characters have anything to do with her. Ugh…
@GoodNamesAllTaken,
Sometimes the movie version is good but only for people that didn’t read the book. I didn’t read the book and am not sure if that is the case. I can say I would be very surprised if it wasn’t a very close adaptation of the parts chosen from the book.
I did not read the book but I did see the mini-series and really liked it. All of the actors were excellent. I found it very touching-a few scenes moved me to tears. I thought Richard Jenkins in particular was great.
The chains on Taraji’s dress look cheap, molded boob cups are almost always a mistake, another sheer-skirt-and-granny panties on view and WTF with the triangular inner-boob cut out? Thumbs down.
+1. Loved her hair & makeup, though.
Taraji looked great but the dress is a bit gimmicky for me. Back in the Benjamin Button days, she was my red carpet favorite though.
Frances is awesome.
I don’t know, would it have killed Francis to at least comb her hair? She looks like an escaped mental patient.
I like that Francis walks to her own beat.
Even though I’m a lady who loves a chance to get dolled up, for a night out, I totally understand her just not wanting to bother.
lol!
I agree, Crumpet. Fine if you don’t want to wear makeup, but it’s sort of, I don’t know, fake or something to not even brush your hair. Like I don’t give a toot about this show or award – but then why did you come?
Yeah. As I said on the Amy Schumer thread, I don’t think actresses have to be fashion icons but I at least expect them to look groomed and clean, which is the same standard I hold for the men.
I thought she looked amazing in it as she walked out on stage to present.
I loved Taraji’s dress alhough I shouldn’t. Yet it was approrpiate for the event and for the weather, and she was comfortable in it. Also there’s a wink to her character imo made here.
Yeah, I kind of liked it too, just because she seemed like she was enjoying it.
Isn’t that what matters – That she loved her dress & she felt pretty and she looked like she was enjoying herself and having fun? Since when is that something to find fault with
France’s McDormand is such a bad ass. I’ll never forget when she won her Tony wearing a jean jacket. She is life giving.
You said it. I LOVE that you can tell what her focus is, as well as her skeptical eye on all the nonsense that surrounds creating the work itself.
I thought she was going to bring it in terms of fashion but it looks cheap and low budget. Looks like she just threw it on without much thought.
Frances is my new style icon. I had a feeling people were going to sh*t on her for not glamming it up, but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that appreciates her style. “Amish couture” – Love it, and I love her.
What’s with all these negligee wannabe gowns? Frances M is a talented treasure, but does she never have anything to smile about? Natural is fine..but a little eyeliner doesn’t hurt.
Sorry Idk what is The center part of dress hate I Love everything about the chicks in this post
I didn’t care for Taraji’s dress, but the rest of her look is spot on, she is a beautiful, talented actress, I stopped watching POI when her character was killed off.
I love Frances’s attitude, she is an actress that is aging naturally and doesn’t give two F’s towards the glamour.
This dress is pure Cookie, on the edge between sexy and trashy (but the chains should have been gold). I love Taraji!
Sara’s dress is incredible , but SHE just bugs me to no end. I understand that she’s talented in AHS, but her face annoys me (and okay, I’m jealous she’s close with Pedro Pascal/Oberyn).
Agree with you on both points, Taraji makes the dress work and Sara bugs the crap out of me, too. For no good reason, admittedly.
I don’t like Taraji’s dress on its own because of the sheer bottom – I’m so bored with sheer everything – but she looks beautiful and glowing and you can tell she feels beautiful in it, so I sort of like it. Or I like her in it. Or something.
Taraji looks like she’s going to the VMAs circa 2005.
I HATE drop shoulder dresses, soSarah is a no.
Frances looks great, i’m 22 and would wear that dress.
I thought Taraji looked gorgeous – her dress was a very good choice and her hair looked amazing – all these wannabes wearing middle parts in their hair need to ask themselves if they would look as good as her and if the answer is ‘no’ then don’t do it.
She Really needs to change her Botox Dr. Those bows look like the joker
I thought her eyebrows looked a bit severe, glad it wasn’t just me.
I hate her eyebrows too, but I honestly think it’s just her natural shape. She had them as a kid.

Ahhhh….is someone upset that there was more than one color in the crayon box this year.
You could almost feel the dislike Taraji has for Terence Howard when they were presenting together.
It wouldn’t have killed Frances to put a bit of mascara on.
Didn’t the story about TH last week say that Taraji hand picked him for the role?
Yes. Unfortunately.
I honestly love it. She looks fantastic. I don’t think it’s too gimmicky. I don’t watch Empire, but given everything I’ve heard about her character I feel like this is understated lol.
Not everyone could look as good as Taraji does in that dress. She wore it well.
she looks absolutely stunning and like she is having a really good time! Love her!
She was kind of gimmicky last night, but it was overtaken by her genuine support for her fellow African-American actresses. She used her platform well, whereas Terrence “Baby Wipes” Howard was off putting.
Looved when she hyped the audience for Regina. Looved when she stood for Viola.
Just love her.
If it weren’t for her, I don’t think anyone else would’ve given a hyped, yet deserved reaction to both wins!
I actually liked not loved Taraji’s dress but everyone’s hair on the post was just ok. Including Taraji who usually over-delivers. But the Bob felt drastic with the heavy eye makeup.
I didn’t like Paulson’s hair at all. It made her appearance a bit dreadful. No life.
Looks great. How can something like that be called gimmicky?
I didn’t like Taraji’s hair or dress. I didn’t like Sarah Paulson’s hair or dress.
Taraji P. Henson is so annoying. She always looks pretentious
I’m meh on the dress but glad she had fun with it. I love the bob cut and center part. So much more refreshing than extensions. I’m liking Paulsen’s bob too. I just wish she’d styled it better.
This woman gives me a rash. The way she stood up and mugged for the camera when Viola Davis won-sit down woman, you lost. Sheesh.
