Tom Hiddleston in a tuxedo for BFI London gala: dashing, handsome or cheesy?

FFN_Ritchie_Guy_FFUK_100615_51871619

We’re cycling through film festivals so quickly! Last night was the opening gala for the BFI London Film Festival, which will be running until October 18th. The gala event was the BFI (British Film Institute) Luminous Fundraising Gala and it was held at the Guildhall. As you can see, Lord Dragonfly was in a tuxedo and looking rather dashing (and slightly orange). Tom Hiddleston was one of the few big-name people at the gala, if we’re being honest. The other attendees were people like Erin O’Connor, Cressida Bonas, Guy Ritchie and Rose Leslie.

Tom was invited to the gala because he’s just been named the BFI’s first official ambassador. He will also premiere High Rise at the festival on the 9th (Friday). For the honor of being named BFI ambassador, Lord Dragonfly said many words:

“Film is an art form – one of the most powerful, accessible, democratic and transformative in our society. It allows us to see the world around us, and the lives of others. It plays a vital role in establishing our national identity and gives us confidence as a nation. The BFI looks after the most significant collection of film and television in the world. It should be treasured and protected, in the same way we treasure and protect all our great cultural collections, from art and music, to libraries and museums. The BFI’s mission is to ensure that our film culture is kept alive, and to inspire the next generation of film talent. It’s the reason the BFI exists and why I am committed to being a BFI Ambassador.”

[Via Deadline]

Sure. Bless. You know who else is really, really involved with film preservation? Steven Spielberg. Martin Scorsese. Robert Redford. Woody Allen. And now Hiddles.

As for the tuxedo-clad Hiddles, he desperately wants to be part of the conversation about who should be the next James Bond! Yes, James Bond could be a goofy posh boy who is more puppy than man. No, if you watch the video, he makes it clear that it’s entirely hypothetical and he doesn’t even seem all that into it, saying: “In an entirely hypothetical situation…Of course it would be… that would be such a huge… I think I would enjoy the experience.”

Oh, and here’s a video of Tom talking to reporters on the red carpet last night:

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

      More for me… 🙂

    • leah says:

I agree, Tom is dorky and charming. But he doesnt have sex appeal. Fassy and Idris those have sex appeal.

      • p'enny says:

it’s all in the eyes of the beholder

        he does to me.

      • icerose says:

Fassy yes ,Idris oK but most of it comes down to their acting for me

      • gure says:

Sorry but why do you say this to us? Why do you think we need to know you don’t love Tom? It’s some kind of attentionwhoring I don’t understand. I don’t like Fassy but I never go to his news to talk some shit.

      • leah says:

        *gure
        Excuse me?
I said he isn’t sexy to me, but i did say he is charming, how does that translate to “talk some shit and attention whoring”.
Why do you feel the need to insult people over their opinion?
(and i don’t know who “us” are, this isn’t a fan site for hiddleston, its a gossip site where we comment on different celebrities.)

    • Leah says:

@lurker My nether regions disagree with you. Very sexy man.

    • carol says:

I don’t get his appeal as well. To me he reminds me of Lumiere the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast

  2. kri says:

He is so good at wearing beautiful clothes. He looks lovely. Tbh, he may have the body of a grown man, but I think a Sloane Ranger is trapped in his brain..

    • antipodean says:

You are so right, a suited and booted Hiddles is a thing of beauty.

    • seesittellsit says:

+100. He’s preternaturally elegant because of height and body type and breeding and education, and I wouldn’t say he lacks sex appeal . . . but something going on behind his eyes doesn’t compute with the public image, or something that should be going on behind his eyes, isn’t. I can’t quite figure it out. Something soft and genuinely romantic is missing, something . . . turned outward. He needs to watch as he ages that he doesn’t turn ferrety.

      • Sochan says:

Personally I think it’s insecurity. I don’t know why. He has everything to be secure about — smart, talented, handsome. But this business really gives people’s self-awareness and sense of security and confidence and general sense of themselves a real beating.

    • neutral says:

      Amateur psychiatrist at work?

    • RLL says:

I’m sure he has a stylist.

  3. Lilacflowers says:

We decided to go orange last night in tribute to Roald Dahl’s oompa loompas.

Did the BBC reporter have any questions for him other than her stupid Bond query, which she has turned into a gushy, misleading story that resulted in him being asked about it several times in interviews last night?

LFF showing of High-Rise is Friday so Tommy will be decked out again.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And yes, we’re still drinking champagne to celebrate the BFI ambassador appointment. Colin is walking about with a tray of glasses.

  4. leah says:

But did he do any impressions?

  5. Astrid says:

I didn’t watch the video and I’m sure a lot of people fantasize about being Bond. I can’t see Lord Hiddles as Bond. Now Idris is an entirely different story – Idris for Bond!

    • Lilacflowers says:

He pretty much says he doesn’t see himself as Bond either and he likes what Daniel Craig has done with it

    • I think he is still a bit young to be Bond, but I think given another handful of years on him, he would be an excellent Bond.

    • seesittellsit says:

Too old for the 5-6 picture deal Bond requires. Even Craig is pushing it and he got the role at 38, five years younger than Elba (admits to, anyway) now. Hiddles is right age, but I dunno – that goofy smile . . . I like him more as a Bond villain, using that goofy smile to shock . . .

I’m personally rooting for Aidan Turner: dark, hot, only 32, gorgeous body, moves well from his years as a ballroom dancer, and those long red lips and dark curls . . . I had heard somewhere he was being considered. Finger crossed . . .

      • icerose says:

i think the Night Manager might surprise us all

      • SloaneY says:

I lurrrrve Aidan Turner like nobody’s business, but I can’t see him as Bond. I couldn’t even tell you why…it’s just something about his demeanor.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I think I’d like him as Bond! He’d be a happy medium between Craig’s grittyness and his predecessors’ cheesyness. My personal choice is Michael Fassbender or Tom Hardy though.

  6. InvaderTak says:

Dashing, handsome and cheesy. All of the above. I’ll take one to go please.

No to bond. Is that the same shirt he wore during the avengers press tour? (In the video)

  7. vauvert says:

I find his speech entirely appropriate and on point for the occasion. I don’t see what else he should have said?? I really like him, obviously, or I wouldn’t be commenting, but I am a bit sad that on one hand Kaiser is giving us almost daily posts about Tom but the tone is always mocking. A lot of sarcasm seems to be directed at a guy that, from what I can tell, doesn’t do anything offensive or rude, comes across as a really decent person, is well spoken and always supports the causes and movies he is associated with. When did that become a bad thing and why? I am sincerely asking.

    • Hannah says:

Why are you sad about something like this? There are so many other things in the world that sincerely deserves your empathy. Some actor not getting praised by everyone the way you think he should be. Come on, that’s not worth it.

      • neutral says:

But those other things are for another place not Celebitchy. We can’t be saving the world on every website.

      • Hannah says:

I think the word sad is a bit over the top for something like this.
You Tom stans are getting a bit too precious of late!
This site makes fun of him pretty gently. Seems to me it’s good natured fun.

    • icerose says:

it is about representing British film as abroad he said not internationally so it was very appropriate and he has an impressive knowledge of films across the world so a great choice

    • et alors says:

@vauvert, I don’t think Kaiser was being snide in the post. Yes, she poked fun at Tom for talking too much (although I think that’s the released statement up there, not his speech from the gala), but so did some Tom fans yesterday in the last post, albeit in a joking way. No matter how big a fan anyone is, I think we can all acknowledge Tom can be long-winded. In reference to the Bond bit, she clarified that Tom doesn’t really seem all that interested in the Bond role for those people who look at clickbait headlines and automatically assume Tom is desperate to play Bond. I didn’t see anything else in the post that could be construed as negative.

Other than the one about the Graham Norton appearance, the tone of the recent TH posts have been mostly positive. It’s the same handful of people who pop into almost every TH post to make the same comments (“I don’t like him” or “He’s ugly”) that put a damper on the proceedings, but you know, learn their names and skip over their comments. Then these posts can be enjoyed for what they are, a fun, harmless way for people to discuss celebrities who have no bearing on our personal lives.

      • jammypants says:

yea I didn’t think she was making fun of him. She started that way jokingly but went on to say that he’s just answering an offhand question benignly.

And Tom is known for talking too much, so it’s stating a fact haha

  8. Sixer says:

I believe Tommy owns a face-oranging mask that dates from first year at Eton days and needs resizing to rid him of the White Hairline Stripe.

Kaiser! The LEGS photo should be at the top. You know I only click for the LEGS.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The LEGS are everything. I had to climb them repeatedly to try to get that damned wing collar tie thingy straight.

    • neutral says:

I’m puzzled by the orange because if it were just makeup wouldn’t someone have made sure it followed the hairline by now. And on some of the photos it isn’t noticeable. 😕

      • Sixer says:

Told you. Face mask. Perhaps he’s doing early onset cryogenics or somesuch? So long as it doesn’t reach the LEGS, I don’t mind.

      • Dara says:

Some of it could be the lighting, but can we officially blame his British ‘groomer’ Amanda Grossman? I think I saw her agency taking credit (or is it blame?) for his look last night. He had a different person in Toronto for TIFF and in NY for Crimson Peak and looked sooo much better, she managed to make him look not orange at all. I need to track her down and send a fan letter.

      • jammypants says:

Is that why he looked great at TIFF? It’s only in London he looks so…orange. I don’t get why he still employs her for red carpet events. I can’t stand her makeup work. He looked amazing this whole promo tour with foundation that actually matched his skin tone…then there’s orange Amanda in London.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Amanda or whoever works with her also has no clue what to do with his hair and always pushes the front up too high. He’s tall enough; he doesn’t need to add height

      • SloaneY says:

Maybe she’s trying to give the impression of fullness with the hair? In any case, I agree with the rest of you. The London lady needs to go…

      • Catherine says:

Actually I think the orange is still the sun exposure from shooting TNM, you can see the uneven skintone.

Edit: Dara you’re right it’s Grossman again, that’s probably why he looks orange:
        https://twitter.com/AFrankAgency/status/651696597181579265

I remember at the Oliviers he looked great, pretty sure he wasn’t using her that time, there was definitely some grooming but it was subtle. Whoever was helping at TIFF and for CP promo also knew what they were doing Bronzing is really obvious on pale skin.

    • frisbee says:

Had to scroll up to have a look and you’re right, it is WEIRD! Looks like he’s lost a centimeter of hairline since the fake tan application. Why did no one notice? Other than that I must admit he does look good in a Tux, but then he looks like he’s stepped straight out of a 1930’s Fred and Ginger film to me anyway…

  9. neutral says:

Actor dresses appropriately for function. Actor responds appropriately to boring question about Bond (probably for the umpteenth time).

Think some folks got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.
    .

  10. p'enny says:

a no vote to Tom being Bond. He’s too good for it, he has a big career ahead of him [i hope] in good films worthy of watching, Bond is too boring and cheesy and unintelligble today’s modern world.
i’d rather he become Dr Who than Bond…

    • neutral says:

p’enny I’d rather he didn’t become either, I have a feeling they are both approaching their sell by dates. And I wouldn’t want him to get tied into another franchise at this stage of his career.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He’s tied into the King Kong franchise at the moment.

      • neutral says:

Lilac, oh yes. Do you know how many films this entails?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@neutral. No. Legendary hasn’t mapped out the plan yet and since nobody has seen the current script or information on what characters anyone is playing, it is difficult to guess. The studio has made moves to unite the franchise under the same umbrella as Godzilla because a Kong v Godzilla film is in the planning stages.

      • neutral says:

So he isn’t contractually tied in yet, apart from the first movie?

      • Lilacflowers says:

@neutral, there has never been any PUBLIC talks about anyone’s contracts beyond the first movie.

      • Gingerly says:

I think we have to wait until the first film succeeds. In case the first one bombs, there will be neither the second one nor the Kong vs. Godzilla film. When and Skull Island is a hit, they will speak about their plan more in detail.

    • icerose says:

      that is my feeling to

    • Dara says:

‘p’enny, I love you but I have to veto Doctor Who – yuck.

Hopefully The Night Manager will tick the ‘action spy’ box for Tom. I’ve mostly loved Daniel Craig as Bond (I think I was one of the few that did a dance of joy when he was cast), but let’s face it- aside from some cool stunts in even cooler locations, there really isn’t much there for a serious actor to sink their teeth into.

  11. Hannah says:

He’s not bond material just like he wasn’t Thor material. Every British actor in his 30s gets asked this question.

    • jammypants says:

“Every British actor in his 30s gets asked this question.” Exactly. Neither here nor there.

  12. NUTBALLS says:

Dashing, handsome, a little orange and the unfortunate recipient of dumb questions. How nice it would have been to ask him about one of the three movies coming out instead of throwing Bond and Thor at him last night.

No to Bond. Yes to Legs.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Or the real reason he was there last night, which was to support and raise money for the BFI. He got a few questions about that but an equal amount of nonsense about Thor directors and repeated questions about Bond, thanks to that clickbait-seeking BBC reporter.

    • Anne tommy says:

      Spot on as usual ladies.

  13. MexicanMonkey says:

They raised nearly half a million pounds last night according to BFI twitter. And as someone who’s a huge fan of British Cinema I just wanna say, thank you, Thomas.
Also, thank you for wearing that tuxedo.

    • Gingerly says:

That’s awesome. I wish reporters asked more questions about the Film is Fragile Campaign and Tom’s ambassadorship.

  14. Miss Jupitero says:

Great cause, great organization, and I am so glad TommyAnnE is ambassador– I think the role suits him.

Bond? No way. I think even he knows that.

I always like tuxedos and marshwiggle legs, but I wish he would lose that bronzer.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I think the role suits him as well. There’s a public image part to it, of course, which he’ll handle easily, but there is also a behind the scenes fundraising component with big donors aspect to it, for which he can exercise all that charm and earnestness and passion for film and all things British.

    • Ankhel says:

I love old movies, and it’s really sad how so many of them are lost forever. Not just artsy, small movies either, but big, successful Hollywood projects. The same for TV, many culturally important programs were taped over to save money, like old Dr. Who episodes. Monty Pyton’s flying circus was only saved because those comedians bought and preserved the tapes themselves, when they were about to be destroyed. I’m very glad to hear Tom speak up for this cause, as if I didn’t love him enough!

  15. MexicanMonkey says:

    https://youtu.be/21fPqWacmlk
And here’s Tom giving a perfect answer to another stupid Bond question and praising almost every single English actor working today.
Bless him, Fassbender really never stops and I hope he never will.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Sounds like he has watched quite a bit of The Bloke in the past year.

      • Dara says:

He’s been a Hardy fan for a while. I remember him praising Hardy’s work in the Warrior ages ago – and he was absolutely right. That performance was brilliant – painful to watch, but brilliant.

  16. Suzy from Ontario says:

So much class and elegance. He could never look cheesy…that accent of his makes it impossible!

  17. meme says:

He’s just so dorky looking. I do not see hot. No hotness there.

  18. koko says:

    “Cheesy” and “Orange”
    Ok, I’ll say it….
    Cheddar
    Yummo Tom

  19. Sarah01 says:

@ Suzy from Ontario – YES!!!

  20. Naddie says:

I like him so much, I’m always rooting for him, but I miss my old crush. Now, he just seem like that embarrassing guy who dances in a goofy way.

  21. Jess says:

He shouldn’t smile so widely, he looks like a nice old lady in that middle pic.

  22. Gingerly says:

      • Gingerly says:

That is a good article. I like the part where he discusses people’s online behavior and negativity. It seems tha he really enjoys playing the guitar.

      • jammypants says:

That’s a really good interview. Thanks for sharing. I love the way he thinks.

      • Dara says:

That’s one of the best articles/interviews I’ve seen in a while, just what I was hoping for from all the press he’s been doing for upcoming projects.

The photos are amazing too. I think I made involuntary noises again when I saw them…

      • neutral says:

        What a nice, sensible interview.

“At the risk of this becoming the most sycophantic collection of words this side of Piers Morgan’s internal dialogue,” Teehee.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! I’ve been waiting for one of these good solid longform interviews and of course, I have to bookmark it for later cause girl’s gotta run before school’s out.

He looks scrumptious in those snaps. Now, I really need to run off some sexual aggression…

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

      hum… two cats in one….

    • Miss Jupitero says:

They are trying to kill us….

    • Lilacflowers says:

That’s me disguised as a cat.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Always love Charlie Gray’s pics of Tom. He took my absolute favourite shot ever of Tom as Henry V–that exhausted, dirty bloody, full armor with sword standing pic.

  23. Sochan says:

There was some other photos … I think in Germany at a Crimson Peak thing with both GDT and MW … where he’s wearing black jeans (?) and a blue long-sleeve button-up shirt tucked in … the fangirls will know what photos I’m talking about even though i’m butchering the reference … anyway to me he looks more amazing in that shirt/pants duo than in this tuxedo. I love a tall man in a good pair of jeans and a long-sleeve button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up below the elbow. It is so handsome. Tom exuded more sexual energy in those photos than in most where he is dressed up. But to each her own.

As a side note, Mia is looking so drawn and unhappy on this tour.

    • Dara says:

Was the blue shirt in Rome? I think he looked positively delicious in that set of photos. Rome and Berlin (blue sweater, black jeans) were the highlights for me.

I doubt a big press tour will ever be in Mia’s comfort zone – but I was thinking she was looking more at ease the more she does it, but it’s a subtle shift to be sure.

    • icerose says:

I love slim tall muscular men with intelligence

    • 'P'enny says:

Mia always looks sulky & miserable its her thing

      • Allegra says:

Same here in this interview Tom and her did last week in Germany.

  24. TotallyBiased says:

Just a note about big names attending the gala–I’m a little confused by the sentence in the header post that says no one was there (essentially). I don’t consider Dame Joan Collins chopped liver.
    Or:
    Sir John Hurt
    Geena Davis
    Jonathan Price
    Terry Guilliam
    Jenna Coleman
    Tom Hollander
    Guy Ritchie
    Steve Coogan
    Jonathan Ross
    Lord and Lady Fellowes
    Lily Cole
    Anna Friel
    –just skimming the list.
(Best we don’t mention Sienna Guillory and her terribly tacky, easily avoidable wardrobe malfunction. Guess it was CHILLY last night! I wouldn’t drag on her about it if she hasn’t been so emphatic about appropriate attire on fans during High Rise–there was NOTHING appropriate about her sartorial decision last night!)

  25. Camil says:

He looks older in these photos. Makeup problems maybe? :/

However, his hands are beautiful. I love those pale hands u__u

  26. TotallyBiased says:

Charlie Gray, the photog on the ShortList shoot that did such a good job with Mr. H and feline sidekick Bentley, has released several pics not in the mag and promises another one on Instagram to entice folks over for a ‘like’ and follow.

  27. NUTBALLS says:

Tom will be on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah next Wednesday:

    https://twitter.com/HiddlestonersFB/status/651944402177363968

    • Dara says:

And for anyone who will be awake at such an ungodly hour (where I am anyway) – Tom will be on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show on Thursday morning UK time. Assuming by Tom Hiddlestone, they mean Hiddleston. Sigh – I really wish people would spell his name correctly, especially those that ought to know better. It would mean tracking this sort of thing so much simpler.

      http://bbc.in/1VDkJUc

      • TotallyBiased says:

The show is on now, but it is pretty inane. There’s only so much Taylor Swift and Bieber-pulls-a-Lenny-K news scoops I can take while waiting for himself.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yikes. Could the opening music for that show go on any longer or be more annoying? And spoilers about the Great British Baking Show winner.

      • Allegra says:

Starts at approx 1:40:00 then has 1 song in the middle.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Thanks, Allegra. I don’t think I could listen through all that bit about Justin Bieber and I would like to keep the Bake-off news out of my mind until it airs here next year. (We’re a season behind)

      • p'enny says:

Bake off is popular in the states? noooooooo

he was funny on Radio 1 this monring, doing stuff from the Family Man? show, ‘who killed the painting’ LOL turned out Sean Bean played the painting in the show.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@p’enny, yes, it is popular and I LOVE It. Two co-workers and I discuss it every Sunday morning but we’re a season behind so I don’t know who they’re talking about and didn’t want to spoil what will be he next season here so early.

Thanks to Allegra, I was able to skip all that. Yes, the stuff about Family Man was funny.

    • Dara says:

And I’m really excited for the Daily Show appearance.

    • Heather says:

The Daily Show what used to be helmed by Jon Stewart?!
