Tom Hiddleston is not dark & brooding: ‘I love Beyonce. I love puppies too!’

wenn23017507

Here are some photos of Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska in NYC for the unveiling of the Crimson Peak-inspired window at Bergdorf Goodman. My body language analysis says that Chastain gets the giggles around Tom and he really does try to make her laugh. My take is that Mia is a total pro, almost to a boring degree.

So, what’s new in Dragonfly Land? There’s a new interview with Tom in Today Online – you can read the full piece here. It’s written by a true Dragonfly who adores him and wants to marry him, so… you know, you have that to contend with. Some highlights from the piece:

His Crimson Peak character: “The character I read in the screenplay was not a villain. And everyone knows I play villains before. But this character was different. And I wanted to make him different. Because in Thomas Sharpe is the tension in the film between the past and the future. He is absolutely trapped by his past. Trapped by his guilt, his shame and his responsibility for the past. But he is struggling to free himself and live in the future. And be a better man. And the arc for me, is one from a place of darkness into light. Edith is the light that shows him it’s possible to be good.”

Ghost experiences: “It’s funny you know? Round the campfire as a teenager, when you’re on holiday with friends and people start telling ghost stories, I thought I had a couple of experiences when I was a child. But I am sure they were just projections of my overactive imagination. I don’t know if you’ve had this, but I’ve walked into a building and felt a strange energy. And then found out that some terrible things happen there. I don’t know if buildings can somehow retain an echo of things that have happened in the past. Like when I was at this very old hotel in Reims, France, and there was very weird energy in my room that night. Plus, it was overlooking the one of the most famous gothic cathedrals in the world (Notre-Dame de Reims). Pretty spooky.”

What scares Lord Dragonfly? “What really scares me? My imagination mostly. My imagination is responsible for my fear of sharks, for example. So I’ll be swimming in the sea and suddenly I’ll want to swim back because I can’t see what’s beneath me. It’s just the fear of the unknown! I also think hysteria is terrifying! I find collective hysteria very scary. I think when people or a crowd gets whipped up to a place where they can’t think logically anymore, I find that energy quite frightening!”

What he learned from Tilda Swinton about showing his butt: “I worked with Tilda Swinton (in the film Only Lovers Left Alive, where they shared a naked embrace). And I remember her saying, ‘Oh we are all born this way. It’s not like we’re showing anything new! So, yes, definitely, the psychological tension was harder.”

[From Today Online]

I think a fear of sharks is pretty reasonable, especially if you’re the kind of bloke who swims in dark, deep, shark-infested waters. Mass hysteria is also legitimately scary, especially if you’re one of the few people with a level head.

Here’s a video interview that everyone is talking about today – around the 2:10 mark of this video, Tom is asked why he’s always cast as these dark, brooding or villainous characters and whether he’s the kind of guy who hates puppies and Beyonce. To which Tom replies, “No, I love Beyonce. I love puppies too! I was just talking about Beyonce this morning in fact.”

I must say, Tom seems to amaze me a lot more. He loves Beyonce and puppies. I beginning to have a soft spot for him in my heart.

    • Amelia says:

      I’ve got a soft spot for him everywhere . . .
      If you catch my drift.
God, I really need to get my mind out of the gutter, at least until Hump Day drinks this evening.
      ….teehee. Hump Day.

      I’ll see myself out.

    • chelsea says:

I don’t think you can get much darker than loving Beyonce.

      • Anna says:

Chelsea, how racist! I’m white and I love Beyonce. Many white people all over the world do. Leave the bubble every once in a while. It’s good for you!

      • Mary-Alice says:

Holly s**t,you people are nuts there! Didn’t you get the reference to “dark and brooding” which happens to be in the title, Anna? Wow. You seriously have some issues with racism, colour and etc. If any type of colour, shade or tone ised in a sentence starts you on the same tirade.

  2. MexicanMonkey says:

The times talk that he did yesterday was fantastic and I would recommend it to everyone, even if you’re not a fan. He had some very interesting answers and perspectives about acting.
Not a bad way to spend an hour.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I second that… his Times Talks (this one and Madrid) are some of the best interviews he’s done. Here’s the link for those who missed it yesterday:

      http://www.timestalks.com/detail-event.php?event=guillermo_del_toro_

He was asked to sub for GdT at the last minute and did a fine job.

      • Dara says:

Me too! I think I’ve already watched last nights talk 2 1/2 times. I loved the Popcorn Taxi interview in Sydney as well – part 1 is gold, part 2 (with the audience questions) is a little cringe-worthy in spots, but it is classic Hiddles.

Does anyone know if James Lipton still does the Inside the Actors Studio shows? Tom would be a gangbuster guest for that show.

      • neutral says:

I think both Tom and the interviewer did really well for saying they had so littler notice. Because it couldn’t have been easy for her either.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, I’ve long longed for him to be on Lipton’s show. His favorite swear word would have to be Loki’s infamous line and he would probably love the interaction with the students.

The Times interviewer tweeted her appreciation that he came to their rescue last night.

The Madrid one, part 2, the funniest thing about the cringe-worthy Hiddlestoners was that Jeremy Irons was their leader.

  3. Lilacflowers says:

A shout out to the ladies who collectively watched the TimesTalk last night. That was an unexpected bit of fun and great to share it with you while it was happening. Likely Tom is getting extra points from GDT, Legendary and the NYT for stepping in like that on such short notice.

Very, very busy day ahead of us today with the Today show, The View, The Daily Show and other CP activities so Colin is going all out to keep us well stocked with refreshments. Enjoy!

Tom confirmed during Times Talk that he disappears next week to Monkey Island.

    • neutral says:

Bet it will seem wonderful not to wake up in a different country every day.

    • M.A.F. says:

I hope the link still works. I have zero time to check it out right now

    • NUTBALLS says:

The Times Talk was an unexpected treat at the end of a long day for me. Thanks for posting, Dara dear!

Lucky Brie, she gets him for the next few months, and in Paradise! I can’t wait to see ROOM.

M.A.F., I posted the link above and it works.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

That was a lot of fun! And yes, Tom is definitely the Company Man. Loved seeing him in his suit and glasses. It will serve him very well.

I get exhausted just thinking about his upcoming schedule. I’m scheduling time with my acupuncturist in sympathy. I will also happily take his nap for him since he clearly has no time.

    • Gingerly says:

I watched the video again from the first. The NYT lady who introduced the host and Tom was really grateful for his being there. He is a good company man and he loves his colleagues and projects. I like the purple tie.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes, that poor woman came across as someone who had just had a major freak out in the sanctity of the ladies room as everything fell apart, only to now be so relieved and grateful that her pleas for help were heard and answered in such a delightful way.

    • p'enny says:

i havnt seen it yet, looking forward to laters. 🙂

    • jammypants says:

Not a lot of new information at that talk but it was still refreshing to watch.

I always felt that way. It is a body – meat, bones. Yes, it is sometimes nice to look at and sometimes it is gross. But it is the mind and personality that actually make a person.

I never understood the savage reaction to a naked body. Like it is an invitation to take it, posses it, as if an owner of a non-clothed body is no longer an owner of it, has no will. I can’t even call this urge animalistic, because animals don’t do that. But it is something dark and ugly.

This is why I cover up, I am the owner of my body, and my will I don’t want to invite predatory glances or thoughts. I want to be seen as a person, not as a body.

Maybe a good thing will come out of all the availability of naked images on the internet, TV etc. People will get used to naked bodies and will not feel that a naked body is something shameful or exposed.

    • evermoreOriginalhere says:

That film Only Lover’s Left Alive, was sooooo cool! I loved it.
It was the anti Twilight…as far as Vampire genre’s go.

      • antipodean says:

I loved OLLA too. Very atmospheric, and the characters were so well drawn by La Swinton and Hiddles. The fact that they were both vampires was almost incidental, and it was the love story, and centuries old devotion to each other, which was the main focus to me.

      • Cran says:

My favorite part is when his character gives hers a night tour of Detroit and he points out where Jack White lives. The way Tilda says “I love Jack White!” is just perfect to me. For some reason this particular moment stands out in my mind. I love them together in this film.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Totally with you on nakedness. My home has always been clothing optional. Neekidity improves everything.

    • Gingerly says:

The nude scene in OLLA is great. Two gorgeous alabaster bodies on a dark sheet. In that scene Tom and Tilda look like a perfect couple, mirrorring each other.

      • Lilacflowers says:

The dialogue that was edited out of that scene cracks me up. They’re lying there so beautiful and he asks her to explain how Stonehenge was built.

    • A.Key says:

EN, I love your take on nakedness, very insightful, made me think.

      • antipodean says:

It’s how we all come into this world, and how we all go out. We all have the same basic equipment, with just a few variations. No big deal.

    • Mary-Alice says:

The proper attitude towards a naked body is lost in growing up among adults who manage to turn it into a sexual object only. Children have the healthiest attitude towards their naked bodies and it doesn’t matter to them if we discuss an ear or a penis. It’s the adults around with their fake morality who instill shame ansd discomfort. It’s a hot topic for me now as I face tne sex ed protests where I live. People with middle ages mentality and complete lack of sexual culture trying to make everyone else feeling guilty for raising kids who know they have penises and vaginas and what they are for, and oh the horror, calling sex a pleasure! At the same time, sex ed starts or should start at home and with a healthy attitude towards one’s naked body as it is. It’s also the path towards loving one’s body as it is and having a fulfilling intimate life. I sincerely hope progressive and modern Canada will not allow a twisted use of tolerance to put 21 century kids in a situation when they call their reproductive organs Pippo and Pappa and learn to make kids in marriage only while having sex for any other reason is out of the question! Welcome teen abortions and sexually transmitted diseases.

  5. Ankhel says:

Oh, Tom. You like pop music and puppies, and you’re not dark and brooding. Okay. Tell me about how this water thing is wet while I trip Chastain and steal her dress.

    • InvaderTak says:

You’ll have to fight me for it…I’ll help with the tripping but after that it is on.

      • Ankhel says:

“Tom, honey? Distract that lady by accidentally loosing a bit of clothing? Oh, and what is best, cake or sex? Discuss!” *cackles madly, runs off with dress*

  6. Josefa says:

Love the short hair on Mia. She’s got such delicate and feminine features. The short hair makes her look harsher and older, but just enough. It’s so rare finding a young actress who truly pulls of short hair, when I finally find one I feel like celebrating, lol.

I don’t see the sex appeal in Hiddles, but he seems like a fairly decent, interesting and witty guy.

Veeeery excited for Crimson Peak. Penny Dreadful is muy ultimate guilty pleasure.

  7. NUTBALLS says:

I really like Chastain’s dress, but I wish she hadn’t shown up looking like she just got out of the shower. Her hair is so glorious when it’s full and here it just looks flat.

I wish she had been more available to do promo with Tom, the two of them have so much fun together. They seem very comfortable with each other and I suspect they share a naughty sense of humor.

  8. Miss Jupitero says:

Good solid review of CP from Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian), whose tastes I tend to like:

    http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/oct/14/crimson-peak-review-psychosexually-rich-soil-of-horror-guillermo-del-toro-mia-wasikowska

“Hiddleston’s voice is a silky marvel, with something of James Mason, and also Mark Rylance in the 1995 movie version of AS Byatt’s Angels and Insects. Crimson Peak is so addictively watchable and macabre, there’s no doubting Del Toro’s sulphurous showmanship.”

Glad to hear someone reference Angels and Insects! That film got mixed reviews, but I really liked it.

    • p'enny says:

and the Telegraph give it 4 stars too and praise Mia’s performance.

Go Peter, please review High Rise in the spring don’t leave it to that idiot reporter.

      • Gingerly says:

I expecet Kermode and Bradshaw to review HR. Wheatley retweeted Kermode who proudly declared his love of the film.

    • Sochan says:

I loved Angels and Insects! So beautiful to look at, compelling, and mysterious. I was genuinely shocked during the scene where they were playing word games. The set-up for the twist was great.

    • Lilacflowers says:

The Guardian always has the best descriptions for his voice. “Volcanic sand slaked with honey” was my favorite

  9. p'enny says:

i’d like to hear Tom sing, ‘if you like it, put a finger on it’

i can see the queues forming….

  10. Boston Green Eyes says:

Aw, come on. Who *doesn’t* love puppies? Or at least, admits to it.

Lord Hiddles loves to play it safe.

    • Leah C says:

The interviewer asked him if he hated Beyonce and puppies. It is not like he put it out there as a statement.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Exactly. What is he going to say? “I love puppies but can’t name one Beyonce song?”

      • Dara says:

Part of me thinks he not only knows all of Beyonce’s songs, but he has a special playlist on his ipod for them, and can do most of the dance moves as well.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Isn’t there a video of him dancing to “Single Ladies” somewhere in the oceans of internet?

I want to see him shake his booty and spank himself.

      • waitwhat says:

Not sure if there’s a video, but he did say Michelle Dockery and Jodie Whittaker taught it to him while they were filming Cranford. Cough up the video, ladies.

      • Sofia says:

Hilarious how you instantly assume he “can’t name one of Beyonce’s songs”. Please. The man has Shakira on his playlist. “Hips Don’t Lie”, at that.

  11. InvaderTak says:

He also admitted to having Shakira on his ipod in a Marvel press tour. Silly silly boy.

  12. Sochan says:

I love that Tom Hiddleston can actually talk introspectively and analytically about his characters and the movies he’s in. He is a true actor, because I believe all actors should be educated enough (whether formally or through their own life experience and research) to analyze and criticize the work they’re involved in. I like what he said about his character. The only problem for me is that the woman who “takes him from a place of darkness into light” is MW, one of the most bland and uncharismatic of actresses. Because of her I just feel nothing when I watch the trailers. I don’t mean this comment as a knock on Mia. I’m disappointed because I want to love this movie. Am I the only one who thinks they’re terribly miscast for each other? Please comment! I feel like Mia should have been the sister and Jessica the wife.

    • Phoebe says:

I’ve seen Mia in many films and thought she was quite good- but just bland and shy in person. I haven’t seen Crimson Peak yet, but I think she is well cast as a young, innocent, naive girl who falls for the tall, dark handsome stranger. I feel like the sister part is much more sinister and “scenery chewing” and I’m not sure she has the chops for that.

    • neutral says:

GDT had Jessica down for the wife, but when she read the script she said “I want to play Lucille”

  13. NUTBALLS says:

Tom and Mia on the Today Show this morning:

Tight blue shirt on full display.

    Next up… The View.

    Ugh.

    • koko says:

I’m going to second the “Ugh” to The View.
I’m going to watch with one eye closed and one ear plugged.
Maybe then I’ll only hear and see him.

    • InvaderTak says:

Ooh he got a new one! This one is blue HEATHER. Nice.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Well that was short. I have a feeling The View ladies wanted to talk to him a whole lot longer than they did.

      • SusanneToo says:

They shouldn’t have yapped so long at the beginning of the show.

      • Lilacflowers says:

  14. Naddie says:

He’s just so nice, I’d be disappointed if I ever find out he’s some kind of jerk. He seems to be the type of person who just can’t be rude to anyone.

    • p'enny says:

well, i wont go far as calling him a jerk, but he’s been playing around with main ladies of Celeb these days. He’s got at least five wives, ten lovers and one who just hangs on his legs all the time.

      • InvaderTak says:

        Lmao priceless.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I can attest that he plays nicely in the bedroom. He submits to the ball gag, being tied up and being fed cake in creative ways.

Sixer is unabashed in her THIGH APPRECIATION, as are we.

I’m all about the GUNS, which have been looking rather robust for Night Manager and the Monkey Movie.

      • Dara says:

Can I call dibs on SHOULDERS? Along with ABS, and EYES…depending on my mood.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Hey Dara, shoulders are attached to the GUNS.

I’ll share, however, cause I’m nice and you seem an ok chick.

      • jammypants says:

I’m going to be crude and claim his family jewels.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He’s all mine and, although I do share, I will not have him cut into bits.

  15. koko says:

The image of a teenage Tom sitting around a campfire listening to ghost stories is pure fun. A fan of ghost stories myself the only thing that would have capped that is if he mentioned the consumption of the gooey, yummy S’mores.

  16. Lilacflowers says:

Who’ll be watching the Daily Show tonight?

  17. Wondering says:

who’s the black lady with him in the pics at rockerfella? saw on torrilla. she looks like she is walking with him then you see her again with him and luke?

    • jammypants says:

      stylist maybe?

      • SloaneY says:

Hopefully not turning him orange like that other chick…

      • jammypants says:

He looks human-toned. That means she’s doing it right. Tom, please, stop employing Amanda.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

New stylist probably, given that he is not orange. Where is this picture though? I went to Torrilla but did not see it.

      • Dara says:

The woman in those photos might be a pr person of some sort – she is not his ‘groomer’. This time around that honor goes to Cheri Keating – she was also with him in Toronto (I think), and the last time he rolled through NYC for CP.

I really need to send her a fan letter because A) she doesn’t turn him into an oompa loompa and B) she’s adorable. If you check out her Instagram feed https://instagram.com/cheri_keating/ , you’ll see her in a photo taken by Mr. H this morning – you can almost make him out in the window reflection. And a few weeks ago there was one with Olly the super-assistant.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Stylist would be my guess too.

  18. jammypants says:

To those who have seen it (anyone?), how many love scenes are there? This is a very important question.

    • Ana A. says:

One and a half. The one from the trailer and one where he is fully clothed, but some sexual action is implied.

  19. nicegirl says:

Confession: I am watching The View (while ‘working’ on the computer) – and just un muted the television, because I am seeing a gorgeous man –

and it is Tom Hiddleston. And now I can hear his voice. Wow.

I saw the Avengers with the kids, and had NO IDEA, until just now, how attractive he is . . .
