Bradley Cooper praises Jennifer Lawrence for demanding equality in pay

Jennifer Lawrence

Yesterday, CB covered Jennifer Lawrence’s fantastic Lenny letter op-ed that discussed why she stood up for herself in demanding equality in pay compared to her male co-stars. JLaw took a remarkable stance by putting her opinions out there. Even after the Sony hack revealed the incriminating salary data (in reference to American Hustle), she could have been considered “difficult” or “spoiled” for saying what men say all the time. But JLaw used the information to her advantage, as did Charlize Theron. It’s hard to believe that — in 2015 — two Oscar winners had to fight for equal pay as their male co-stars (one of which is a freaking beefcake, even if Chris Hemsworth does seem charming), but that’s Hollywood for you (and the rest of the world, for that matter).

JLaw handled her essay with both a professional air and a little bit of humor when referring to the “lucky people with d*cks.” She did place part of the blame on herself for being a poor “negotiator,” which softens the blow against the industry because, yeah, they will consider her difficult for writing the letter. E! Online caught up with Jennifer American Hustle co-star, Bradley Cooper, and Sienna Miller, who recently ditched a Broadway play after finding out she’d receive half the pay of her male co-star. Both were promoting Burnt and were supportive of JLaw:

While promoting his upcoming movie Burnt Tuesday morning, close friend Bradley Cooper learned about the op-ed published in Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter. While he had yet to read the article titled “Why Do I Make Less Than My Co-Stars” in its entirety, a brief synopsis of the piece immediately intrigued him.

“One thing I could say is that’s interesting because if you think that you only deserve a certain amount and that’s not correct, it’s about changing that mindset and sticking up for yourself the way that Sienna did,” he shared with E! News. “So that’s a great thing.”

As it turns out, Lawrence may not be alone. When Catt Sadler asked about the article Tuesday morning, Sienna Miller shared her own personal story of experiencing a wage gap.

“I walked away from a play that I wanted to do because I was offered less than half of what the other man was offered and it was just the two of us,” she explained before Burnt hits theatres Oct 30. “[I did] what we have to start doing, unfortunately, at the expense of our creative dreams.”

The gender wage gap is real in many industries, and I know some people didn’t appreciate JLaw’s so-called “first-world problems,” but why shouldn’t she get paid an equal (or greater) amount as her male co-stars? When the Sony hack happened, people also tried to justify her lesser paycheck by saying she only played a supporting role in American Hustle, but Amy Adams got stiffed too, and she played a leading role in the film. For salary purposes, it doesn’t really matter what role an actor plays in the film. JLaw put just as many or even more butts into seats as Jeremy Freaking Renner, for crying out loud. Who saw American Hustle because of him? Good on BCoop for speaking out for the ladies.

How 90s of her. Cant wait until the ladies start confusing sleeping around with being modernand a progressive gal 😉 then we’ll def know the trend-issue machine is in the 00s

Not gonna lie, I didn’t read this. I did read JLaw’s essay, but I don’t care about Bradley’s thoughts.

I’m only commenting to say that something about him these days looks Behind the Candelabra-ish to me? He ooks me out.

Also I LOVE that red dress Amy wore in the first picture.

  3. vauvert says:

So Brad spoke about Sienna or JLaw? Not that it matters, it is good to hear his stance regardless, and hopefully more male stars will speak in support of pay equality.
I really don’t like JLaw at all, and I suspect the essay was ghost scripted, but I fully support everything she said in it. Whether it is about millions or cents on the hour is irrelevant. Gender pay inequality is very real, very entrenched and change needs to happen. If a multimillion award winning actress helps shine a light on this issue, great! It is far easier for her to be a spokesperson than the single mom who can’t afford to walk away from a job because she needs to put food on the table daily.

I really loved Jennifer’s letter op-ed!! And what i loved the most… was the way she also defended Angelina Jolie in her letter. That was very nice!! 😄

“A day late and a dollar short”, wouldn’t you say. No one heard heard a peep from anyone when the known psychotic “producer” was having a tantrum over a (woman) having her own vision how a character should be portrayed.

But it seems everyone is jumping on the bandwagon for equal pay for women in HW. Meryl, Lawrence, everyone and their sister, but till women stand up for each other in all things, maybe they should just STFU, and STHD. Lawrence had a dud of a film not long ago, and not a word was uttered by anyone, maybe she’s getting paid what she’s worth.

Well since Bradley Cooper was a producer on American Hustle maybe he should have used a bit of high mindedness when it actually mattered and not just as a soundbite. That man makes my skin crawl.

  6. Skins says:

Of course she should make more than Jeremy Renner. She sells tickets, he doesn’t. I mean, has anybody ever said “Hey, lets go see the new Jeremy Renner Movie”? I doubt it. I’m sure she doesn’t really need the extra money, but thats not the point. Its how you keep score. You have to know your worth and try to get it in any walk of life

    • Alex says:

If they thought anyone else could sell AH they definitely wouldn’t have changed the entire marketing strategy to revolve around Jen. There’s NO way she should’ve made less than Renner and Cooper who were in supporting roles.
If you want to use Jen who has less screen time to get people to see the movie then yes you need to pay her.

    • lola says:

      @skins
      One word, “Serena”.

      • Beth says:

… which bradley cooper also starred in. Whether you like her or not, the fact that she has only had one really unsuccessful film in the past few years speaks to her profitability. She was, as others have pointed out, also used heavily in the marketing of AH, so studios apparently agree that she sells seats.

Sony can start repairing its very damaged reputation by voluntarily fixing the American Hustle pay problem immediately.

  8. buzz says:

Donald Trump just said 2 days ago that women would get equal pay if they were good enough to earn it.

  9. lizzie says:

considering this to be a first world problem irks me. it implies it is a lesser problem somehow and it isn’t. women are economically oppressed in many cultures. in american culture we have it great comparatively but the wage gap is a deeply ingrained form of discrimination that insidiously keeps a thumb on a woman’s economic standing. it isn’t forcing child brides into premature marriages but 50-60 years ago – it did. societal pressure on 17 and 18 year old women to marry for stability is very recent history. to this day – it forces some women to stay in dangerous relationships and endangers their children. it isn’t just about being “unfair”. it is a form of opression and it is a very big problem. i applaud anyone who steps up to confront it.

    For ensembles it does

  13. Idon'tCare says:

I just can’t seem to care about this issue! I do believe in pay equality, but in this case, they’re all Overpaid and should be happy with the opportunity to earn way more than they ever deserved. Just my opinion.

    • PoliteTeaSipper says:

Someone can easily say the same thing about you and your job (if you have one).

      You’ve completely missed the point.

    • A.Key says:

So because they’re overpaid they don’t deserve to be equal?

      WTF

Because Bradley Cooper deserves to be more overpaid than Jennifer, simply for having a weiner.

      Sure.

  14. iheartgossip says:

Oh please. Anybody can put words together. Where was he when the women were all making less than him? Bleh.

    • Melanie says:

Is it possible Bradley didn’t know that the actress’ were getting paid less? I mean, is it common knowledge on a movie set how much everyone is making?

      • tracking says:

Of course, it’s possible, but he just comes across as insincere to me. Like he just goes with whatever prevailing wind goes by.

  15. Corrie says:

Loved JLaws letter. Its not about how much – but just the even scale of standing up for your worth. Every now and again, we need a public reminder. Also, its always trickles down to other actresses.
