Princess Sofia of Sweden announces her first pregnancy, she’s due in April

sofia5

Told ya so!!! I’ve been saying this since late August, when Princess Sofia stepped out with Prince Carl Philip and there was a small roundness to her abdomen. Princess is pregnant! And it happened really quickly too – Sofia and Carl Philip were just married in June, and she’s already past her first trimester. You have to give it to her, honestly. Out of all of the new princesses and duchesses we’ve seen over the past several years, Sofia is The One. She’s the one who truly hit the ground running. She’s the one who was immediately ready to take on a royal role. She’s the one who understood that people love royal babies and she got to business quickly.

A new little royal is on the way! Sweden’s Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip are expecting their first baby in April 2016, according to an official statement from the Swedish Royal Court.

The newborn will be fifth in line to succession to the Swedish throne, Swedish official diplomatic sources confirmed to PEOPLE. Sweden’s royal family are thought to have delayed the announcement until now to avoid distracting attention from the christening of Prince Nicolas earlier this month. The couple were married this summer in June at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm.

Since their wedding, the prince and princess have toured the regions and represented the Swedish Royal family at numerous events. In September, Princess Sofia undertook her first solo outing, traveling to South Africa where she addressed the plight of Syrian refugees.

Princess Sofia will be able to enjoy her pregnancy alongside her sister-in-law, Crown Princess Victoria who is also expecting a baby next year.

[From People]

I think they delayed telling people because Sofia – correctly!!! – believed that Victoria and Daniel should be getting the attention and that they should announce their pregnancy first. The fact that Sofia waited to announce, giving her sisters-in-law their own news cycles speaks to this whole “Sofia is doing the duchessing thing really well” theory. Well played, Sofia. I have high hopes.

    The Sweeds are fertile.

  2. Lora says:

    My favorite couple…

  3. dr mantis toboggan says:

Are we supposed to like this woman? She just seems to me like a Swedish Lara bingle, but she married a prince instead of a washed up movie star

    • Jessica says:

You could say the same thing about Kate Middleton.

      • Truthful says:

@Jessica: not really… except if I skept news about Kate middleton being a crass reality star, and posing for trashy crude pictures… plus Kate, as lazy as she is, is educated .

    • OhDear says:

I’m not her biggest fan either, but she seems to be doing well in her role so far.

      • Liv says:

If I didn’t know about her past I’d think she’s pretty perfect as a princess. She’s very pretty, takes her job seriously and seems engaged with people. I’m not fully convinced that she put her past behind her or that she’s a smart girl, but I guess time will tell.

    • The Original Mia says:

You know…that’s a rather apt description of her.

    • Lora says:

      Well, why shouldn’t we?!

    • Nic919 says:

She managed to travel on her own within three months of her marriage while pregnant in order to deal with a serious issue that is not sports related. Just doing that is more than Kate has ever done.

She seems to understand that because royalty is basically redundant, they need to constantly justify why tax payers support them.

    • FLORC says:

You don’t have to like her, but I do. To judge her not from her past, but from her current actions she’s doing very well.

      • OverFirstAve. says:

“”No changes in the schedule of The Couple’s public engagements are planned during the fall of 2015.” The Sweidish Court”

KATE TAKE NOTE….Sofia will be continuing her regular schedule!

        Congratulations to the Couple.

      • inthekitchen says:

@OverFirstAve. – well, Kate actually IS continuing her “regular schedule” …her regular schedule of doing the almost nothing (except shopping, and getting her weave adjusted, and vacationing)!

    • Jib says:

Well, most people forgive Angelina Jolie for her racy past, so why not this woman? She seems to be doing very well in her new role, doing events while pregnant , on her own, and continuing to do so, unlike the Pampered Duchess. I like her, too!!

  4. Allie says:

I don’t mind her, but while the prince is good looking, I just don’t like him. He seems sketchy to me or just a real bore. She’s really pretty though and I’m jealous of that. Just going to have a quick pity party, excuse me.

    • Cali says:

“She’s really pretty though and I’m jealous of that. Just going to have a quick pity party, excuse me.”

Lol, glad it’s no just me who feels like this! She is so stunning, naturally😢

  5. Lambaby says:

    I love this girl.

    I don’t know why.

I love her face. She is so beautiful and looks fresh and happy and her husband looks genuinely into her. And I even love her saucy past. She seems real.

    • Pip says:

      +100
Agree. And she agreed to delay announcing due to sister in law CP Victoria – very dignified, gracious and fit in as a genuine SRF.

The new year will have lots of babies for the SRF.

      • m says:

Except she probably didn’t delay the announcement since she is due in April meaning she is 3 months, this was the right time to announce it

      • MET says:

@m – rumors about her being pregnant have been swirling for over a month so like others I think they delayed the announcement in deference to Victoria.

    • SHARYLMJ says:

Me too!!! they seem really into each other and she’s SO pretty and he’s SO hot!!!
She’s definitely got the “How to be a Duchess” thing down already

    • Rae says:

      I agree with this comment.

Whilst I admit to having doubts about her originally, due to that saucy past, I am loving just how well she has done so far.

My appreciation of Sofia has grown at the same rate as my dislike of Duchess Kate has….Coincidence, I think not.

    • Anon says:

+10 she seems like the fun friend in college who was a great time and maybe a little wild, but ultimately had a heart of gold and was an awesome friend. YOU GO, SOFIA!

    • Elisha says:

      Right there with ya Lambaby

    • I like her too. But I think she needs bangs. (Fringe, here in the UK). That is all.

    • OverFirstAve. says:

Me too, I like her and I wasn’t a fan at first, but she seems to actually to be doing well in her role and she actually seems interested and genuine when she is out on the duties I’ve seen her on.

    • Mary-Alice says:

That’s why I like her- she has history and is not perfect. Perfect is boring. Faken perfect is cheap. She is just right.

  6. bobslaw says:

    Happy news!

  7. Betti says:

Congrats – it will be one cute baby.

  8. Shelby says:

Happy for them! I agree that he looks really into her, lovely couple

    • belle de jour says:

They seem so light and happy and together in a comfortable, breezy way, don’t they? It always lifts my mood just seeing what the photographs manage to capture about them.

  9. antipodean says:

I am now going to unashamedly do the “told you so” dance. I spotted her pregnant bosom at the Christening. My thirty five years as a midwife has not been wasted!

  10. Laura says:

Princess Sofia is “The One” indeed! She has taken to her role as Royal with enthusiasm and accessibility from the start. That she and Prince Carl Philip delayed their good news also shows their sensitivity to other Royal family members. It seems that these Royals truly do care for one another. Congratulations Princess Sofia!!

  11. kri says:

Congrats! I like them alot. That’s going to be one gorgeous baby. In that last pic, she looks like Claudia Schiffer a bit.

  12. zinjojo says:

You called it, Kaiser! You’re a true gossip bloodhound and sniffed this out early! I had reservations that she was pregnant this quickly into the marriage, but here it is.

  13. ldub says:

i can, and kinda enjoy, imagining them…. “making babies” LOL
while kate and bill just seem like…..i don’t know….cold fish types…..like, they wouldn’t be into it.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Lol yes, ITA. Will must be soooo beyond boring in that dept…and every other dept come to think of it

  14. Kate says:

Awe, yay! Congrats to the happy couple. While I hope the baby inherits his teeth (am I a bad person for being inordinately obsessed with her dental situation?), I’m sure it will be a beautiful child. On another note, I’m also due in April, and my fatness compared to hers (or, rather, her lack thereof) is a little depressing.

    • michelle says:

Not a bad person, just a superficial one. Her teeth look fine, healthy and natural – perhaps she should get them ground down and then fitted with veneers like Kate?

      • Kate says:

Oh, relax. Why engage in the media fabrication of “duchess vs. duchess,” like two women can’t exist on the same planet without their physical appearances being examined in every minutiae and compared like livestock? While comparing their work ethic and performances as modern royalty is fair game, comparing their beauty regimes is moronic. As an American, I guess I’m accustomed to seeing famous people undergoing cosmetic dentistry as a matter of routine, so her decision not to is perplexing. On the other hand, I made it clear that I still think she’s beautiful (hence her having a beautiful child), and it’s totally her prerogative what she wants done (or not done) with her teeth. I don’t get my panties in a wad if someone gets veneers (or doesn’t). My use of the word “obsessed” was obviously tongue-in-cheek because who’s actually losing sleep over this person’s teeth? I do find it interesting that while their spouses are compared endlessly, little comparison is made between William and Carl Philip. The former’s disdain for duty is well-known, but until marriage improved his image the latter was seen as a playboy and lay-about with little visible means of support. Whether one wants to forgive the mistakes of her thirsty youth or not, Sofia has been very good for repairing CP’s public image.

      • kath says:

Kate, I can’t believe you’re getting all worked up over a stranger’s comeback to a comment you made about another stranger’s teeth. Get a grip, girl!!

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Kate,

This has to do with cultural differences. It is not really that common in Scandinavia to get veneers and other costmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening has become more normal but putting veneers on perfectly healthy teeth is something that dentists in Scandinavia isn’t too fond of. It is still health before cosmetics in this area in my part of the world.

      • FLORC says:

        Michelle
Your 1st sentence made me giggle:) Thanks

People make these remarks about her teeth and in the same breath compliment her beauty. There’s something off about someone’s praise overall while isolating and highlighting an imperfection they have.

As a side point I never realised so many people over these last few Sofia threads assumed crooked teeth and poor health go hand in hand.

      • Mary-Alice says:

In both my parts of the world, Central Europe and Canada, is absolutely unadvisable to do anything to healthy teeth. Kids get braces, that’s all. The artificial whitish all straight and the same look is laughed at. And rightly so.

    • Rachel says:

It doesn’t make you a bad person, I just don’t really understand *why* it bothers people so much. It’s not even that big a gap, so I don’t get why people are so obsessed with it. It’s not like a gap between her two front teeth is in any way indicative of her oral hygiene. Is that what it is? Does it make you think negatively about her oral hygiene in general?

I think it’s lovely and adds to her personality. I like it when people have a feature that sets them apart. In some cultures, that gap is considered very desirable.

      • Amy says:

I have a similar – albeit slightly smaller gap – between my two front teeth and when I’ve considered getting it fixed family and friends, but most especially my husband, told me not to. They love my smile. I think we’re so desensitized by the veneers that are everywhere now, we forget what natural, real teeth look like. They’re not blindingly white and the size of pieces of gum. She looks lovely to me and it’s nice to see someone who isn’t changing their appearance to fit a mold.

      • lowercaselois says:

I agree, I think she is really pretty. Has a natural look about her. Her teeth remind me of the super model Lauren Hutton. Lauren Hutton said, her teeth were part of her look.

      • Marie Alexis says:

It’s not so much her gap, IMO. A tiny bit of bonding could fix that. The unattractive teeth are the ones she has BESIDE her two front teeth. They are super short; one is almost non-existant.

    • Jayna says:

I have a feeling her husband loves her smile (teeth), one of the things he probably loves about her, and doesn’t want her with fake veneers.

    • Betti says:

You’re not a bad person – I’m one of these people that’s not only obsessed with my own teeth but the dental hygiene of others. I used to have crooked teeth but spent a small fortune getting them straightened out and fixed up – for vanity and a need to protect my teeth from future decay as it was proving tricky to properly clean the crooked ones (they were the ones that got all the fillings). They just need whitening a little bit – i have one tooth that had the root removed and its gone a bit of a ‘off colour’.

Anyway, apart from the gap they look fine and as for veneers why should she go there. I hate those things.

    • Deedee says:

Lauren Hutton was told to fix her gap, too. How idiotic does that sound now? Kate’s big Chiclet veneers are the worst!

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I think we can call out a bunch of bad HWood veneers..TSwift, Hilary Duff etc. I like the natural gap too. It’s cute and endearing. Michael Strahan has that gap too and it’s great-looking on him as well, IMO.

    • noway says:

No you are not a bad person and as someone said I really think it is society. It’s funny in the US orthodontic and cosmetic dentistry really is the norm. I remember talking with my child’s orthodontist and asking if he needs braces, and he said well it would improve the look. I made a joke that if we lived in Britain or when I was a kid we wouldn’t even be talking about it. The orthodontist agreed. They know and are making tons of money on all of us, because guess what your teeth move throughout your life so you will probably need more later too.

  15. Pip says:

Congratulations to the Prince couple – Princess Sofia!

  16. Hannah says:

I woyuld be pregnant too with that husband 😄 He’s the only Royal that would be considered hot even if he wasn’t a prince.

  17. Kate says:

On another note, if she’s due in April, she’s just completing her first trimester. While no doubt she didn’t want to steal anyone else’s pregnancy announcement thunder, I don’t think this is sufficient to call for her beatification. No one announced publicly during the first trimester because of the very real risk of miscarriage, which decreases significantly after the first 13 weeks. Anyhoo, I like this couple, and I’m happy for them.

    • Jessica says:

Yeah, she’s due in April which means she may have delayed announcing by, like, a week or so so as not to coincide with the Christening but it’s not like they waited for Victoria to announce or something. Victoria is simply ahead of Sofia in gestation and would naturally announce first.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Also, Vicitoria’s announcement would naturally steal the thunder from any other woman’s announcement, so it’s not like Sofia had to wait out of politeness.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Well, Jill Duggar Dillard announced practically on the day she conceived… 😉

    • Gabrielle says:

So did Duchess Kate because of her hg both times.

      • Saywhatwhen says:

That lazy @$$ Duchess announced early to call out Normal Bill from his lascivious outings and she announced early the second time to shut up her detractors who keep asking why she isn’t working. That’s my take and am sticking to it.

Congrats to the Princess with the pretty refreshing smile!!!! And to her pretty boy husband too.

  18. TessD says:

It’s easy to be such good princess when you have a prince who so obviously adores you 🙂

  19. Ang says:

Congrats to them and I think they will make a beautiful baby

  20. Jayna says:

Wow, talk about pitting one against the other. She’s the one. She’s perfect. She’s been a princess for only some months, but she can do no wrong,. Look how amazing she is and how horrible the other one is. And she’s pregnant right away but didn’t take the thunder from Victoria. She’s so wonderful. Well, no one would in that circumstance. But she’s barely at the point where she would announce it anyway.

She is not even under one-tenth the strain that Kate is, who is married to the future King of England. I just don’t get this need to pit one against the other.

I like both, by the way..

    • Olenna says:

IMO, Kate doesn’t seem to be under much pressure, so I’m curious to know what strain you believe she’s under and who is causing it. Also, IRC, Kate was wildly and internationally popular (much more so than Sophie), and received a lot of praise in the first couple years of her marriage (from me, included). So, I don’t think the glowing remarks here are OTT compared to what Kate generally received.

    • bluhare says:

I agree with you, Jayna, even though my first thoughts about Sofia were that she’s embracing her role much more than Kate ever has. She may have better support within the family; who knows. I’m trying to not compare; I really am. 😉

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I think a lot of it is in regards to work ethic as well..Sofia does still have a lot to prove, being that she is still so new to the role. But everyone is beyond irritated by the Cambridges bc they are known for hating royal duties and only appear when they are on vacay, or at a sporting/entertainment-related event. I want to like Kate but she (and Will) needs to step up, which is nothing new.

    • TessD says:

What kind of pressure is she under? Genuinely curious here. She is raising her children in a beautiful house in the country and only works when she chooses to. No one is expecting Prince Charles to abdicate and no one is pressuring his son and daughter-in-law to do anything at all at the moment.

  21. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Aw, sweet! Lycko önskningar,

  22. ladyg says:

    Congrats to them!

I wonder if Will and Kate know what this couple is up to. I wonder if “poor Jason” is watching the Swedes like a hawk — and explaining to W&K, “Hey guys, you’ve got some stiff ‘royaling’ competition now.” Does Ma Middleton follow them? So many royal gossip questions!

    Royal gossip rocks.

    • wow says:

      Lol.

Why do people do this? There is no competition. Sofia is a princess. Kate will be Queen Consort. Both ladies are doing what is expected of them in their royal positions. If they weren’t then they would hear about it from those who’s opinion matters to them.

  23. EN says:

She rubs me the wrong way even though most people seem to like her.
She is just too simple like there is nothing is going on behind those pretty blue eyes. She reminds me of Duggards, I can’t help it.
May be I am wrong, time will tell.

  24. Rose says:

I put her success as a princess to her reality TV experience.

    • Jezza says:

I agree. Plus, she’s had to fight hard to get where she is because of her past, so she’s out there trying to prove the doubters wrong. No shame in that game. I think that’s why she’s hit the ground running.

  25. LAK says:

Kaiser, you definitely deserve a round of ‘I told you’ jig.

  26. Chelly says:

Idk much about her but appreciate her scraggly teeth. She could have totally gone the hollywood route & gotten them sawed to fit veneers but instead embraced her imperfection & shows shes still beautiful. Shes perfectly imperfect…..this chick has my vote 🙂

  27. Vava says:

I read other blogs where people seemed so critical of her, I suppose because of her past work. She really has hit the ground running, though – and it’s great to see. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a groom so over-the-moon on his wedding day. The two of them are so cute together and so here’s to a happy marriage, great family life, and successful royal adventure. The British Royal Family could use a young couple like this!

    • FLORC says:

They do appear so in love. My heart goes awww…:)

    • wow says:

” The British Royal Family could use a young couple like this!”

      They already have one.

      • Jib says:

If you are a big fan of Kate and Will, you would love the conversations over at Go Fug Yourself!! They are the biggest fans and sycophants over there, ever!!!

  28. moo moo says:

    Love her.

  29. Comity says:

I’m pregnant just from looking at him.

  30. Betsy says:

I like both of them. Congrats!

  31. Eliza Rose says:

I think part of why she’s working so hard and doing so well is because she actually is middle class. Not the PR middle class of the Middleton’s. So she gets the need to hustle and work and earn that tax money.

  32. wow says:

Yay! Congrats to them! She and Victoria are pregnant at the same time.

It’s funny reading posts throughout several royal boards. The hate people hold on to towards Sofia and Kate is alarming.

  33. Ncboudicca says:

I’m just here to bump this story’s comment count up. digging this couple!

  34. LisaT says:

Congrats to them on the pregnancy. I am amused by so many buying into her PR so quickly. She has the support of many in the tabloid press (some of whom interacted with her on Facebook) and the Court is extremely heavy-handed in shaping her PR . Sofia has always wanted to be a celebrity and now she has a public role, of course she is going to run with it. The real truth is that Cal-Philip does not have a really well defined public role, so it remains to be seen how long the Court will push Sofia. The longer the Swedish Family is covered, many will see the difference in how the married-ins are treated.

  35. sauvage says:

And she even managed to wear sensibly-heeled elegant shoes early in her pregnancy! Take note, Kim Kardashian.

  36. nicole says:

Okay, I am in no way a Kate-apologist. She seems like she has zero interest in her role a as public figure, even if that means she has the opportunity to do good. That aside, I do not really care for this website saying how Sofia got pregnant faster than Kate and that she is somehow better than her for it. I get what you are trying to say, she’s doing all the right things that one would traditionally expect from a royal, but we don’t know what kind of fertility issues she may or may not have had. Work wise, fashion wise, I think it’s fair game to compare. “Providing an heir”… probably sould be off limits.

  37. seesittellsit says:

I thought it fairly obvious that Pss. Madeleine was early pregnant on her wedding day a few years ago. Her first baby was born barely nine months later. It took Victoria much longer to get PG there were suspicions she was having difficulty. Given the nearly instant fecundity of her younger sister and now sister-in-law, I’m sure she’s relieved that she is also going to have a second child.

  38. anthromom says:

She iimpresses me. Before the wedding I read so much about her “past” and how she was thought to be a poor choice. They seem to be in love and really like one another. She is doing all of the right things and they look very happy!

  39. Lillylizard says:

Sophia is a natural people person her restaurant bosses in NY said all the customers loved her. Kate on the other hand is never natural, always awkward and too try hard when called on to meet the general public. I think Sophia will head in the direction of Princess Mabel of the Netherlands (the Kings sister-in-law), another royal with a somewhat wild non-PC past, who has grown into a major force for women’s and children’s social issues on the world stage, her wiki page is worth a look, her recent efforts and focus is on ‘Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage’.

  40. aquarius64 says:

I’ve seen comments on other blogs and sadly this pregnancy is not met with joy in some quarters. The baby is not even born and it’s already labeled a meat ticket and a prop for Sofia to get attention. The baby has a mean nickname and there are jokes that beyond the pale. Nothing goes away on the internet, and I feel for this kid if/when the comments get back to him/her when older. As for the mother’s past… I’m no fan of Sofia but the kids should be off limits.

  41. Aulty says:

Ohh I hope they have one big joint-christening for Sofia’s and Victoria’s babies.
