A few weeks ago, we heard that Adele’s third album has finally been completed. Like, it’s totally done… four years after 21 became one of the biggest and most significant albums of the decade. The new album comes out in November and Adele has already plotted her takeover, a plot that includes exclusive appearances across NBC, probably any interview she wants to do, likely some major magazine covers and a complete hijacking of whatever passes for pop music today (sorry not sorry Taylor Swift). We also heard that Adele’s first single wouldn’t be dropping until the first week of November. But what if Adele wanted to give us a preview? What if she wanted to remind us that she can still give us chills (good chills)? This is what aired last night during X Factor:

Nah. There isn’t a single young female artist out there who has anywhere NEAR her vocal capabilities. Some of her lyrics are a bit trite, which she herself has said, but her voice…her voice is killer. I do hope she mixes it up a bit more and has some more songs like Rolling in the Deep and not have it be nearly all ballads.
Are you serious? There are a lot of young soul singers who have as much talent as her, voice and writing wise: like Lianne La Havas, Laura Mvula or Jessie Ware. I love Adele but I hate when people act as if she’s the first to do good soul-pop.

I’m replying to Neah23, fun fact, Adele actually gave a shout out and posted a link to Alabama Shakes a few years back. That’s actually how I found out about them, through her website. I’ve loved them ever since and got the pleasure to see them at ACL. She sounds EXACTLY like her albums, it was an amazing show.

Adele is blue eyed soul and as far as blue eye’d soul is concerned she is the ruler of that, but yeah, I find her overrated, but hey there is a lot worse out there.

@neah23, I love the voice of that singer, Britney! Never heard her before so thank you. She reminds me of Amy Winehouse who, IMHO, was a much better singer than Adele. I love Adele and think she has a decent voice, especially when compared to people like Bey and Rihanna, but she’s no Amy Winehouse. And I always thought Adele had throat problems because she wasn’t singing with good technique. She belts a lot, and I don’t know that she does it right.
She’s not that great of a singer. By pop standards, sure, but otherwise no. Her technique is awful and is going to destroy her voice eventually if she doesn’t get some proper training. She can’t recreate her falsetto/head voice outside of a studio environment, and she’s regularly pitchy. None of her songs are particularly difficult to sing either, she’s never out of her comfort zone.
She has good control and she’s a fantastic emotional singer, which is what most people are responding too. But her voice itself is just ok.
Yes I think she and Sam Smith are overrated.I do appreciate that she took some time away from the spotlight for a couple of years.Hopefully her new album every will be more upbeat,enough with the heartbreak songs.

That’s what I love about artists like Adele. They appreciate their success, bask in it for a little while and when they feel they’re overexposed, they take a break and focus on life and creating quality, not quantity. Young pop stars should take note!

Adele is not a manufactured pop star, or a lunatic going off the rails for attention. She does not need auto-tune to make an album, or eight simultaneous tracks of her own voice. She does not use recordings for her performances – or pyrotechnics, a dozen backup dancers, and skimpy costumes. We need more musicians like her – but they are very rare.
All of this! She is a true talent. All she needs is that voice. Her music is soulful and will always be relevant. That’s one thing most pop stars lack… Their music will not stand the test of time.

One of my all time fav Adele songs is her cover of Cheryl Cole’s Promise This. She kills it and owns the song! I heard Adele’s version first and then listened to Cheryl Cole’s original version. I’m sure Cheryl was a bit humbled, if not mortified on how true singing talent wins.
No they’re not rare. They’re just not mainstream or well-known.
If you would talk about musicians that have a similar genre as Adele, you would know she is most definitely not unique. No reason to wait 3+ years when there are musicians everywhere that make Adele-type music. One of my favourite young artists is Birdy, also a lot of piano and a soft soothing voice with meaningful lyrics. Or Lucia. There’s also Sara Bareilles. Yaël Naïm…
I don’t get why you list the typical shenanigans of what it entails to be a popstar/performer (autotune, high production value, dancing etc etc) when you know she is not a popstar. Comparing apples with chairs.
Not to get personal because many people express this type of sentiment but the only reason people seem to know Adele is because she was able to break into mainstream (which was unusual), not because people are such fine connoisseurs of non-mainstream music. Like, if you’re listening to the top 40, don’t clap yourself on the back for recognizing Adele’s amazing voice…
And there’s nothing wrong with popmusic. I don’t always want to stare out of the window and contemplate my life with Adele in the background. Sometimes, you want to get loose and forget your troubles which pop is perfect for. How dreary the world would be if only a few genres would exist =/

These Miley Cyrus’s always need to be relevant and in our face so we don’t forget, Adele left took time off and comes back and people are waiting with great anticipation for her.

The fact that it’s been 4 years since her last album and that she disappeared to start a family, and yet there is this mounting anticipation of her upcoming album speaks volumes about her and her talent. No crazy antics or high profile relationships to keep herself relevant and in the spotlight. Just raw talent that is obviously admired and celebrated (and rightly so). I, myself, can’t wait to hear the new album!

On an objective note – I was once a singer and gave up my training (opera) because I knew I could never be good enough. I was a technically proficient (some of my teachers said great, even) singer with no voice of her own, style, and soul. I was essentially a great mimic. I say all this because when I talk about my love of Adele, most people who know my musical past and current work are surprised. She is not the greatest singer. Her songs are Beyoncé/Taylor Swift-esque and sometimes trite and cringe-worthy. But inspite of all that, I just love her sound and listen to her CDs all the time. I once listened to her CD with my studio headphones – don’t do it! – and saw her live performance of that Bond song – meh – but I love her still.
Just curious. What was the problem with with the studio headphones?
Oh and yes, technical skill is no substitute for soul. There has to be some quality to the voice that evokes emotion. Which I agree Adele has in spades. Sia is another one whose voice always catches at me.
@I Choose Me – with my studio quality headphones, you can hear details you miss when just listening to the CD in the car or MP3 on iPhone. Also, her diction killed me and as a technician, it takes away from my enjoyment of her so I don’t recommend it :). Funny thing is, I also love 90s, indie, low-fi music and the headphone-listening to say, Pavement, doesn’t bother me. I guess it’s the expectation. Oh, and I love Sia, too!

19 was a great Album. 21 was pretty much the same thing. Count me as one of those who thinks she is overrated. I agree about the diction and enunciation; it drives me batty as well. There are lots of artists that are equally or even more talented than Adele when it comes to her type of music. Unfortunately, the stars haven’t quite aligned for them and they are not known to most people.
I would rather listen to a 30 second snippet of Adele on loop than an entire album from any one of today’s ‘pop’ stars.

I can’t wait for this to come out. I love that woman’s voice.
I love the genuine soul in her voice, think she has a great ear, and appreciate the old-school church in her music. But I admit I was hoping this time around that her lyrics would be a bit more abstract, and perhaps resonate with a few more stages and events in life as well (fingers crossed). She’s also quite funny, and it would be lovely to hear some of that in there, too.

Aww, this makes me think that tAdele is still sad. Much as I love her sad music, I was hoping she was in a happy place.
Adele kind of passed me like a ship in the night. The only song I like of hers is ‘Skyfall’ and I sort of like ‘Rumour has it.’ I just find her songs too sad and depressing. That said I like her as an artist because she has that old school quality of simply relying on her voice and talent and not gimmicks, sex, nudity etc so in that sense she is refreshing and has a certain sense of class and elegance.
I think the reason why Adele gets so much attention is because she is basically the only singer of that type currently in the mainstream (and at the time of her debut pretty much the only female singer of her type.)
