Here are some photos of Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan at last night’s LA premiere of Suffragette. Meryl wore a Marni dress that looks like it was made in the 1970s and I don’t mean that as a compliment. What the fug, Meryl? Carey didn’t look much better in her lilac Oscar de la Renta dress with unfortunate ruffles, although I’m more willing to give Carey a pass because she just gave birth to her daughter Evelyn a month ago.
Meryl Streep has been remarkably quiet since she totally screwed up the promotion for Suffragette a few weeks ago. She refuses to self-identify as feminist (calling herself a “humanist,” which has nothing to do with this issue) and when asked point-blank about the controversy, Meryl gave one of the most infuriating answers on record. So, in the past week, someone told Meryl to simply be quiet about the whole thing. Which means that we don’t have any juicy new quotes from Meryl about how she loves men too much to want women’s equality. Carey did tell a nice story about Meryl standing up for her during the promotional tour though:
Carey Mulligan is not only busy promoting her new movie Suffragette, but she’s doing it while caring for a newborn baby.
“The last couple of weeks have been pretty stressful,” Mulligan said with a laugh last night at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event, where she was among the evening’s eight honorees. “Doing press and doing it with a tiny baby, timing has been very important and babies do what they want, which is a challenge. But it’s really helpful when you have Meryl Streep backstage at events shouting at people on your behalf—telling them to hurry the hell up because you have a nursing mother here.”
Well, that’s nice. Eh. What do you want me to say? I still can’t believe Meryl screwed up so badly and I still have some negative feelings towards her. Do I believe that Meryl is all about women’s rights and that she’s looking after the younger ladies? Sure. Do I believe Meryl needs to find a better way to discuss feminism and everything else? Yep.

I adore Meryl Streep, but she’s never been a great dresser, usually too fussy. She should hire the stylist from Devil Wears Prada.
Amen! I’ve been saying that since that movie came out! She’s never looked better AND the hairstyle suited her too!
I think her somewhat frumpy after thought style is what she thinks suits her but I love a pulled together Meryl!

Meryl has never had the greatest red carpet style. This dates back many years. It’s always been pretty bad. But, I still love her no matter what. It’s like she can do no wrong in my eyes. Even when she flubs interviews. I think my throw in the towel.moment will be if she supports Donald Trump… If anyone does that I’m pretty much done with them.
Too much print on too much dress..don’t really get pairing geometric earrings with granny pillow floral–that is not 70s (though the boots are)..both look pretty bad

I’m glad to hear Meryl has a mom’s back when she needs to feed her baby. The dress is terrible. I’m also disheartened to hear her backtrack on being a feminist. That’s a bummer.
Perhaps it is because I was a child in the 70s and couldn’t wait to grow up and wear all the clothes my mother and her cohorts were wearing, but I have a special place for a good 70s vibe – fug or not – so I like Meryl’s look. As others have pointed out, Meryl is not known for very high marks on her red carpet report card, something a feminist would say should not matter as she is there for her work and not how pretty she is. But since Meryl doesn’t care about being a feminist, I have no problem discussing the fact that she doesn’t know how to dress herself.
Well, it’s not like she won’t support women or colleagues. She’s just too shortsighted and privileged to realize that supporting them on issues that have also concerned you personally or are still a personal concern to you is not enough. She’s a mother, she knows what it’s like so she’ll support her friend and colleague. To not be able to see beyond that is – to me – a sign of either lack of intelligence or living in a bubble.
Fug. I’ve seen better material used for curtains.
I think Meryl’s dress would be a pretty fabric for a black wicker chair. That’s the best I can do.

I’m not *outraged* by La Streep’s remarks per se maybe a little confused. The main issue I have with her comments is that I don’t quite understand why she dodged the question the way she did. I wasn’t sure where she was coming from because I’ve associated “humanist” with religious or non-religious beliefs rather than a social issue. Unless I’m wrong? The whole thing came across to me as if she didn’t want to rock the boat with the big wigs and maybe a little bit divaish. I’ve had the opinion for several years now. It makes me not trust her motives for her push for equality because of these comments and other unrelated comments in the past. Again i could be wrong, Just my opinion.
No, I think your understanding of the word “humanist” is better than hers. I agree that she has said some things that disappointed me.
I don’t have a big problem with what Meryl said. People like to blow things out of proportion.
I can totally see Meryl being a diva when she wants to be. She has that air about her – that she doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Ive seen her make mince meat out of reporters with just a stare or a passive aggressive remark. I love it!

Meryl Streep has earned every right to express her opinion. You either like it or you don’t. I don’t understand why we, as a society, are obsessed with labels. When we label people as that or the other, we segregate ourselves and lose the sense of a larger community. In the end, we are all humans who should care for each other and embrace an individual’s foibles.

Having said that, I have the impression it’s more of an American (USA) affliction.
No shade intended, that is my impression. Here in Europe “labelling” of this kind is much less rampant (and the backlash against political correctness seems much stronger, too).
I actually sort of love this in a crazypants way, though I wish it were longer.
Oh my god it’s awful. Looks like some crazy 70s sister-wife on steroids. Why can’t she use the same dresser as Helen Mirren and look elegant but sassy.
