Leo DiCaprio accepts SAG Foundation award, debuts Serious Oscar Face

This ^^ is Leonardo DiCaprio’s Serious Oscar Face ™. God, this awards season is going to be so much fun!! I really hope Leo goes all out and officially becomes the Cumberbatch/Aniston of Oscar campaigning try-hard this year. As we learned last month, the studio is kind of worried about The Revenant, especially since the cost of production bloated up to $95 million, and that’s not even counting the millions of dollars it will take to promote the film and wage an aggressive Oscar campaign. “Every awards consultant known to man” has been hired to get Leo that Oscar. And Leo is playing the game like never before, hence the Serious Oscar Face ™.

These photos are from last night’s SAG Foundation’s 30th anniversary gala fundraiser in Beverly Hills. Leo was awarded the SAG Foundation’s Actors Inspiration Award. It wasn’t just about his career – he was also being recognized for his charity work, and his foundation which has given away $30 million to environmental and conservation causes around the world. You can read more about the event here. When Leo got up to the podium, he told the assembled crowd: “I accept this with the belief my work is just beginning.” Of course he can say that – he’s a 40-year-old white man. He’s going to be a leading man for the next 30 years.

As for Leo’s Oscar chances, the Gold Derby site (which tracks reviews, buzz, stats) has Leo’s chances for a Best Actor Oscar below Michael Fassbender. As in, Fassy’s buzz for Steve Jobs is much better than Leo’s buzz for The Revenant. Still, The Revenant won’t be released until December/January, so Leo is playing the long game. Fassbender might have the buzz right now, but no one is voting in November. Fassy might be peaking too early.

Star Magazine also had a rumor that Leo was canoodling with a lady who was not Kelly Rohrbach several weeks ago. A source told the tabloid, “Leo was drinking with an attractive blonde – no surprise there – but she definitely wasn’t his girlfriend…Leo had his arms wrapped around her, whispering into her ear and sending her into a fit of giggles.” Serious Oscar Face ™ aside, most successful Oscar campaigns play on happy-family public images. I’m not saying Leo needs to suddenly turn up with a wife and a baby, but maybe not flaunt his bachelor shtick for a few months?

Oh, and here are the new posters for The Revenant:

Poor Leo gets no love on this site. I have no feelings one way or the other. I will always remember him as Jack in Titanic when he was young and sweet and had a much much much thinner face. What happened there I wonder. Anyway my heart will go on and on……

  2. Livealot says:

    Lmao @ serious oscar face

  3. ds says:

This Oscar game is fun to monitor, especially since I really, even with all my marketing and PR knowledge, do not understand why it’s not enough for actor to get this silly statue simply based on merits? Who cares who he bangs, or what a jerk he is in private if he delivers at work?

  4. Bishg says:

If he gets an Oscar for The Revenant I’d be very disappointed.
I haven’t seen the movie, just the trailer, but by the look if it, it’s an artsy-fartsy project with little to no appeal. Seems very boring and tedious.
Leo is a fine actor and he could have gotten an Oscar for many different movies. Not this one, please.

“If he gets an Oscar for The Revenant I’d be very disappointed. I haven’t seen the movie…..”

      Good one.

  5. Fifedogg says:

Does anyone else notice Leo’s resemblance to Brad Pitt’s current visage?
And Brad is 10 + years older!

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Everybody’s face gets wider when you get older.

Both Pitt and Dicaprio have the heavy-lidded thing going on over their eyes and the high forehead ever-so-slightly-receding hairline.

    • jessia says:

You mean Brad copying Leo? Nice try but Leo is younger and looks younger then Brad. Brad is not aging well.

  6. Skins says:

Leo shouldn’t worry about whether those tools from the academy decide he is worthy of an oscar or not. He has put a lot of quality work out over the years and that is all that counts really

  7. Tiffany says:

He has the kind of desperation of a C list model trying to get her name out there.

*inhales* You can smell it from here.

  8. Kori says:

A lot of attention was paid to the Fey/Poehler crack about George Clooney but I found their crack about Leo equally hilarious. As they introduced him they said ‘And like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.’ He was actually blushing, red in the face when he walked out. Not the classiest joke in the world but I just about died when they said it.

  9. Lora says:

What I don’t understand is, he is a good actor why does it matter who he bangs? Not that its cool to bang one supermodel after another, just to make it clear…

    • Naya says:

Well, how do you objectively measure “good acting”? Acting awards in the end are really just popularity contests and Leo does himself no favors there. Its not even the mulitiple gfs, lots of past winners had high gf turnover. Its the sum total of his lifestyle. He parties too hard and he treats women as interchangeable shells. He still rolls as king of an entourage and when older members grow up and settle down, he just recruits new members. Leo cant skate by as just an Old Hollywood playboy OR as rock & roll cool. He comes off as fratty and douchey and totally unlikeable. Nobody wants to reward a douchey fratboy, especially Academy members who feel succcess is squandered on him.

      • Josephine says:

Hmm. Not sure how success is squandered on him. He isn’t in and out of rehab, hasn’t killed anyone, does seem to genuinely care about and contribute to some causes. Why would anyone think that he needs to settle down? Somehow I’m guessing that his model girlfriends understand that he isn’t looking for marriage. The “poor young models” line is strange to me, as is the need for him to be married. He grew up very poor, has worked since a very young child, and perhaps knows that he would stink at being married and having kids. If he’s cruel to the women he dates, that would be horrible, but I don’t get the sense that this is the case.

    • Guesto says:

@Lora – agree, it shouldn’t, he should be judged on his work.

@Naya – so let me get this right: Leo should pander to people who are unable or too stupid to separate his work from his lifestyle? Good God.

    • EN says:

His personal life doesn’t matter to me when it comes to his work. But I am aware of it.

He is a mixed bag – he supports environmental causes, which is a plus, but I don’t understand (beyond the obvious) what he gets out the endless models he is with. Doesn’t he want some sort of companionship?
He dated Gisele for years, Gisele loved him, they were a good match. But he didn’t want to settle. Fine. I guess he is just not a family man. At least he is not a Jude Law.

Anyway, he is an excellent actor, and when I watch him on the screen , I forget that it is Leo, so none of that matters.

  10. Marny says:

When he says his work is just beginning I’m sure he’s talking about his charity work. He’s been involved with this stuff for at least a decade so I think it’s really cynical and unfair to say this is all in the name of him winning an Oscar.

  11. Mia4s says:

All these comments about “merit” and “why does it matter who he bangs”! Easy answer. The Oscars are not about merit. They are about the overall “story” of the nominee. This allows the Academy to feel important about awarding the “right” performance. Plus it funds a whole side industry of media, cocktail parties, Q&As and side awards like this one. All in the name of revenue. Sure you could argue you vote for favours and on who might help you going forward. But remember much of the Academy is old/retired/traditional and have no need for that. Sometimes there are surprises but most of the time the “story” is written long before the ceremony. Leo doesn’t have the right narrative for much of the Academy (plus you can’t campaign too hard or they will think they look too easily influenced).

    • EN says:

Yep, very true. Oscars are often about politics and image.

Last year with Redmayne there was a link to helping people with disabilities, with Cumberbatch it was the gay rights. And it is not bad that the spotlight helps those causes. But it is true, they had to come up with a narrative which would appeal socially and politically, it wasn’t just about the quality of work.

    • Korra says:

This exactly. Im surprised anyone takes the oscars this seriously. It’s a bloated dog and pony show that can never come under time or reach the demo they really want. We all know who’s going to win because of the 100 other industry sponsored events that awarded all these movies already lmao. The narrative, the marketing, the dresses, the interviews are a campaign end of. The actor gets an accolade but the movie….the movie makes BIG bucks.

  12. Arlene says:

I like the posters, they look great.

  13. Jane says:

I hope he doesn’t even get nominated.

    • Chris says:

His face makes me think that he expects to be nominated. I’m going to really enjoy it if this film tanks. Like, a lot.

  14. Tippi says:

I can’t wait to see this movie, it looks amazing. Leo is probably the only person I’m actually a fan of, he was my first crush in Romeo and Juliet and those teenage crushes are very special. I feel like a teenager again whenever I watch his movies. He deserves an oscar, it’s long overdue.

Unless he starts hurting people or dates a Kardashian, I’ll adore him as an actor forever. He can sex a million models for all I care, lucky them, I don’t understand why people resent him for that. Nobody’s obliged to settle down, it’s weird how strongly some women seem to feel about where this man places his love stick. It’s like they’re personally insulted that they’d never have a chance with him because they’re not a twenty something model.

    • EN says:

I also think the movie looks amazing, from the trailer.

“Love stick”, lol, that is a new one for me.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Perhaps Leo is some kind of Warren Beatty type. Beatty was known a womanizer extraordinaire and now he is happily married to Annette Bening.
Bening once said that perhaps Beatty just had to get it out of his system …
So Leo perhaps just needs some more time.

Btw. perhaps it is better to not get married if you aren’t into it (yet) because a divorce is always a strain on at least two people. It is kind of honest if you admit to yourself what would work and what wouldn’t work and if you don’t give in to pressure from other people over something you don’t want to do.

    • Sash says:

I completely agree, Tippi, except he was never my crush. Just love his professionalism and I like 80% of the films he picks. And he’s a great actor and gives it his all. I think his acting style is more cerebral than emotional or physical though. I’m impressed by his enviro work and don’t care about his dating life (unless he became a pedo or something).

    • Sash says:

@Pondering, I think everything changed for Warren Beatty got his heart broken by some supermodel (think it was Stephanie Seymour) who ran off on him with someone else. Then he met Annette Bening and told her he wanted someone to make him good.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

So we just have to wait until some lady breaks Leo’s heart seriously and then he will want to be made good..?

  15. Chelly says:

He’s lost a lot of weight. God, I hate how easy it is for men to slim down quickly. Anyhoo….I want to know where his star on the walk is. How are people like Sofia Vergara & Reese Witherspoon unveiling their stars (that i frankly feel they didnt deserve) and he has nothing! This Hollywood game is a joke

  16. Sash says:

Good luck, Leo. You deserve it! It’s time!

  17. Mary Carol says:

Rumor is he’s HIV+. Look at the pics again and what he said from that perspective. I’ve never seen that sadness in his eyes before. Where is his usual swagger?

    • Sash says:

What a random rumour. He’s sober like all the environmental scientists who work on the front lines of climate change that you meet. They’re all depressing as hell to talk to ’cause they can see what’s happening firsthand.

  18. dandy says:

@mary Carol I heard that the actor in question is most likely Charlie Sheen…

  19. Ally8 says:

Aw, I came for the “beardy boy movie” jokes and I was disappointed.
