Benedict Cumberbatch did ‘otter poses’ for his fandom: cute, cringey or try-hard?

cumby4

Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Depp appeared on The Graham Norton Show on Friday in the UK. I guess Black Mass is only coming out in the UK now, where it came out months ago in America. You know what? This was surprisingly the most I’ve liked Johnny Depp in a while. He sort of gives a vibe that he’s taking himself too seriously, but he seems to genuinely like both Benedict and Graham Norton, and Depp plays along with many of the jokes. As for Benedict… people are already tweeting me to say that Benedict was “extra” just like Tom Hiddleston, but I’m not really seeing it. If Tom is an overeager puppy who piddles on the carpet from excitement, Benedict is…the more mature dog who likes to look out the window and bark at birds. Excitable, but not really noteworthy.

Here’s the section where Graham once again talks about how Benedict looks like an otter and Bendy gamely tries out “otter poses” for the fandom. It’s cute until Benedict takes the giant bear down. But I still didn’t cringe? Like, is this supposed to be cringey like Hiddleston? It’s not. You can tell it’s not cringe-y because Depp gamely plays along and kisses Cumby for the photo.

Here’s the brief clip of Benedict talking about the Cumberbaby and Sophie Hunter, neither of whom he mentions by name.

And here’s a low-quality longer video of Cumby & Depp.

All in all, a decent appearance by both of them, I’d say. They seemed rather affectionate with each other too. Plus, Depp didn’t seem sh-tfaced, which is a nice change.

Man… He is really unfortunate looking. It baffles me to no end that he has fans who go crazy for his looks. I think otter is too cute an animal to compare to this alien.

    • Mimz says:

      +1

I cant see what the fuss is about him as well, same as i cannot see whats so sexy about Cilian Murphy.

Baffles me. But i guess to each their own, right?.
I didnt watch the video but the photos are cute.

      • SloaneY says:

Have you seen Peaky Blinders? Cillian is the sex. It’s not beefy, generic sex, though.

      • Bettyrose says:

X1000 But I’ve always thought Cillian was really beautiful.

      • FLORC says:

Cillian is hot, but not for characteristics he shares with Cumby. It’s an overall look. How he carries himself. And his face imo is much more appealing over BC.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’ve gone back and forth over Cillian through the years. He’s painfully pretty and those eyes of his seem otherworldly. But Peaky Blinders Cillian is just pure sex.

      • EN says:

When I first saw Cillian in something, some supporting role, I was struck by how otherworldly beautiful he was and went and researched him. He is not sexy to me, but unimaginably beautiful.

      • qwerty says:

Did you really just put Cillian in the same sentence as Cumberbitch?

      • mayamae says:

With Cillian Murphy (for me), it’s the eyes, mouth, and voice. But it’s also contingent on how skinny he is and how long his hair is. The longer his hair, the less attractive I find him. I adored him in 28 Days Later, but he was just so skinny I didn’t find him attractive then. In Red Eye he was so mesmerizing that I had to keep reminding myself he was the bad guy.

I don’t find BC super attractive or unattractive. I actually think his individual features are beautiful, but don’t work so well combined. He really creeped me out for years and I couldn’t pinpoint it until someone posted it here – his role in Atonement. I had never seen him before, and didn’t see anything else for years. I also remember him talking about his mother wanting him to change his name so slave ancestors wouldn’t attempt to seek reparation. Not a flattering story to tell about your mother.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@qwerty, some of us need the pleasant diversion.

      • AG-UK says:

Cillian is other worldly but unfortunate he is about 5’6. His eyes are beautiful and love Peaky Blinders

      • hermia says:

I saw Cillian in Ballyturk at the National Theatre and I was in the front row. He’s so beautiful it’s almost unreal. BC is unusual, but Cillian could be a model.

      • hermia says:

@AG-UK Actually, seen from up close (he passed us in the street, after the show) he’s not that short. He looks like a skinny boy, much younger than his age. If you are into that sort of look (I know I am) you don’t notice his height the way you do with Freeman, for example.

      • Lilacflowers says:

When, oh when, will we see the next season of Peaky Blinders!

      • prissa says:

Cilian Murphy is gorge!!! Those eyes & lips!!!
Kinda like Jared Leto; his eyes are his best feature. And they both are aging fabulously.

    • seesittellsit says:

This . . . . . plus the older he gets the more like a self-absorbed out of touch twit he seems to be.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        A giant prat.

      • what'sup says:

There was a story ages ago in the neighbourhood about a neighbour being locked out and asking if he could wait at Cumberbatch’s house and he said no – flat out. But then he ran into the same neighbour a few weeks later and complained about this role he was up for and how stressed he was – not even mentioning the locked out incident. There might have even been another post on this I think. I think he’s very into his issues, his problems, his life and it’s only now that this is getting to be seen a bit more publicly.

      • Betti says:

Yes thou i think it relate to the more successful he becomes. He thinks he’s more famous than he is. I cringe for him when he plays along with this Otter thing – its rather old and people should let it go. But props to him for going along with it.

I was talking to a friend who is crazy about Sherlock and he went off on me when i dared to suggest that Bendy will drop the role for Hollywood. I said that we might get one or 2 more series from him before he drops the role that made him famous.

      • hermia says:

Well BC is clearly self-absorbed; he has even admitted to it.
I don’t think you become that famous unless you are focussed on yourself 100%.
The problem is his acting is not getting any better. Let’s face it: the attention he gets these days is due to his crazy fandom rather than his acting talent. Which is why McAvoy got the best actor award and BC’s Hamlet wasn’t even nominated at the ESA this year.
Bill Murray on fame: “The truth is, anybody that becomes famous is an ass for a year and a half. You’ve got to give them a year and a half.”
Is BC already out of time?? 🙂

      • Gwen says:

….he is, his breakthrough was about 2011/2012 at least 2013 ……. not everybody is made for fame, you can see it, some celebs are ass****s for their whole career, other are rather humble, the latter are rare…..

        *playing Humble doesn’t count*

      • EN says:

@ hermia – exactly right, it is impossible to reach a star status otherwise.the amount of self promotion and networking and bargaining and compromising required is unreal. You also get an echo chamber effects as well as these people lose the link to everyday life. Most celebrities are forced to live in isolation because otherwise they are constantly interrupted and mobbed and are stared at by everyone.

It is even more extreme with politicians. It is impossible for a decent nice person to reach high levels in politics, they have to make so many Machiavellian bargains along the way they either don’t get there or they get there very much changed regardless of their intentions in the begging.

      • hermia says:

@EN My point though is that you have a choice: you can either go the Ben Whishaw’s route and be private and focus only on your acting or go the BC’s way and become (to be fair) a bit of an arse.
I know you want to hear only good things about him, but despite the fact that I like him as an actor, I think he’s been prone to making spectacularly bad choices (NOT talking about his private life btw). Maybe he’s surrounded by too many yes-people.

      • EN says:

@hermia, I am not so happy about Ben Wishaw lately either, now that he is becoming more visible.
None of them can make it and not sell their soul.
Either they have to give it up or get with the program.

      • hermia says:

What’s the Whishaw done except for being brilliant and 99.9% getting a BAFTA for London Spy???? 🙂 🙂

ps Jokes aside, the man couldn’t sell his soul if he tried. I have seen him at the q&a for Bakkhai and he was twirling his hair and stuttering, while Carvel was yammering BC-style. He’s just not made for that kind of visibility.

    • Eden75 says:

I don’t think that he is good looking either but I do love his acting. I don’t watch too many live interviews with any actor/actress. I find if I do and I dislike them, I can’t watch anything that they are in anymore. I refuse to ruin Sherlock for myself.

As for Cilian, I find his eyes to die for. I don’t find him super attractive otherwise but again, he is a great actor.

      • Eggland's worst says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. However, I do “love” Aaron Eckhart and he seems like such a good guy in his interviews. Very humble and nice. Maybe he’s a jerk and just that good an actor, but I do agree with you about watching interviews. I just starting telling people I like the work of an actor/actress, not the actor/actress themselves.

    • EN says:

Shouldn’t people admire him for the fact that he made it despite his looks?
Yet every time people say – how can you like him, he isn’t good looking? I have eyes , I can see he is no Marlon Brando, it is his acting I like.

First of all, he is still better looking than your average man, and still there are plenty of people who like and fall in love with those average men. Looks aren’t everything, looks go away at some point .

And second, none of us can do much about our looks. Should we not even try to do what we love if we are not good looking enough?

      • Who ARE these people? says:

These were really nice things for you to say. It’s what’s inside that counts.

Plus, he was a good sport for doing this.

      • qwerty says:

        He’s way below average looking.

Also, plenty of Cumberbitches claim to by drawn to him specifically because of his physical rather than internal qualities. Let’s not make it into something deeper than it really is.

      • EN says:

        > Let’s not make it into something deeper than it really is.

Let’s not drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator maybe?
I find self-confidence, education, brains, humor far more attractive than anything on anyone’s face. Empty eyes are not attractive to me regardless of how prettily they are shaped, there has to be something behind them. I am a person who finds Churchill attractive for his wit and strength of personality.

Plus, the standards of beauty change through the times. If we had some Egyptian queen come alive today or a Roman or Ancient Greek beauty, we wouldn’t find them beautiful. But I think strength of their personality and confidence would still come through.

Standards of beauty change exactly through such people, they act as is they were beautiful, and others believe them. it is very similar to acting.

      • Gwen says:

Well lately his eyes are dead, he is not the brightest, and he has def a hot body, like a Male Model, and he knows it.
Despite his acting talent, he seems rather insecure and mediocre, like so much Men.

      • Crumpet says:

        THIS.

      • bettyrose says:

EN – Given his posh origins, I’m not super impressed that he made it despite his looks, but I also think his looks become secondary when he’s acting. He’s so fun to watch that he becomes attractive.

Has anyone else watched the scene in Master of None where three straight(ish) dudes and a lesbian are watching Sherlock and they’re all seriously crushing on Cumby?

      • jammypants says:

eh…not sure what average dudes you’ve seen, but I’ve seen some decent looking ones, so…

        average dude > BCumbs

      • EN says:

Well, the average 40 y.o. American guy one would see in the office, restaurant or movies is not better looking. But that is besides the point.
The point was that no matter what persons looks are, if that is a decent .person, they are deserving of love and success on their character merits alone.
Women keep saying they don’t want to be assigned value based on their looks but what are you doing here? You are doing exactly that – setting an expectation that value of people working in entertainment is based on looks. You have to change yourself first if you want to change the world.

      • jammypants says:

I’m allowed to have an opinion and my opinion is he does not look better than the average dude. Talking about his looks and his career are two different things. He’s doing fine and he won’t be begging for a job anytime soon.

I am not setting an expectation of people working in the industry. You said it yourself that he looks better than the average dude. Average dudes are not in the industry.

    • Nikki says:

      I don’t get Bradley Cooper’s appeal either..

      • McLori says:

And he looks more like a weasel than an otter.

      • EN says:

A very good actor can overcome the looks . Bradley and Leo DiCaprio and Cumberbatch and Depp (these days) and Maggie G. all fall into this category for me.
Bradley’s transformation in the American Sniper was impressive.

      • bettyrose says:

        B. Cumberbath > B. Cooper.

      • jammypants says:

He always has a cherry red bloated face. What’s up with that?

      • Lilacflowers says:

I didn’t get Cooper’s appeal until I saw him one day last winter when he was here filming joy. He still doesn’t do anything for me but I can understand what attracts others. He’s a really good looking guy

    • DesertReal says:

      Thank you. This +1000

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    It made me giggle.

  3. Jane says:

I was uncomfortable watching this. Shudder….

    • SloaneY says:

Someone on this couch needs some serious therapy. And the other one needs rehab.

      • Jane says:

I couldn’t agree more. Depp doesn’t talk much to begin with, but I got the feeling that Norton was just going to go for the $h*ts and giggles from BC to get the laughs. It was all too cringe-worthy in my taste. Either that or I have turned into a curmudgeon LOL.

    • Jellybean says:

I think it was ok! Hiddleston’s last appearance made me cringe, but in this case it seemed that Cumberbatch was humoring his host rather than trying to be the centre of attention. I did feel that Norton focussed on Cumberbatch a bit too much, Depp is a huge star and could have done with a bit more grown up questioning; but that is down to Norton.

      • Betti says:

Norton is a very experienced host and I suspect that he focused on Bendy because he wasn’t going to get much from Depp. He’ll target people that he knows will play along with him.

      • Jellybean says:

I know what you mean Betti, but I think he could have put a bit more effort in with Depp rather than being so silly with Cumberbatch. I do think pretty highly of Norton most of the time and the way he handled Harrison Ford a while back, pairing him up was Jack Whitehall, was inspired. I am not really a Depp fan, but I haven’t seen him interviewed very often and I was quite interested to hear what he had to say.

  4. vauvert says:

At some point seeing both JD and Ben at the same time would have felt like treat. This is just.. blah.

  5. Elsa says:

I loved it when Johnny talked about his daughter and his visits to children hospitals. Such a humble and nice guy . Still not a huge fan of Benedict even though I love him as Sherlock.

    • sarah says:

I 10000% can confirm this. My friends mom used to work as a nurse at CHOP in philadelphia in the (forgive me, I don’t know the correct medical title) but the “terminally ill children patient center” where children with cancer or life threatening medical complications are cared for. It is mostly the “cancer patient center” since majority of the kids are recieving chemotherapy treatment or temporary medications to ease pain from terminal illness.
Either way, Johnny most certainly visited CHOP numerous times, as she would tell us stories about the kids he visited and how amazingly good he was at making the kids laugh. I cannot remember the details, but one particular kid (she passed probably 3-7 years ago) loved Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny kept in contact with her until her death.

      • Kitty says:

        What an amazing man.

      • Carey says:

Thank you for sharing. Depp comes across as so sleazy sometimes, I’m glad to learn he has a generous side we don’t know about.

      • chloe says:

Great story, it’s nice to hear something nice about Johnny.

      • Jellybean says:

That is lovely to hear. The media and especially social media is such a blunt tool, if a person fails to meet certain standards in one part of their life then they are scum. Clearly Mr Depp is doing some good work in a very understated way.

    • Jellybean says:

That was the highlight for me too and I am not a fan; not anti, just not a fan.

  6. Felice. says:

I am Johnny during the otter segment.

  7. Miss M says:

John sisnt enjoy that Cumberbatch was called an otter. He felt uncomfortable. So did I.

    BC is cringy too.

  8. InvaderTak says:

That meme is played out isn’t it? Kinda surprised that GN went there again. Was he really that at a loss for material? Eh whatever. Johnny Depp is just sad.

    • Kitty says:

Why is Johnny Depp “just sad”? Did you actually watch the interview? He came across well.

    • Arock says:

I agree, it’s like he can’t get out of character. All the ooze is melting him, he’s starting to look like a high street Cory haim:(
      Meh to cumberwhatever.
      Graham Norton is still adorable.

  9. lucy2 says:

Johnny is such low energy. Blah.
I don’t follow BC, so I don’t know how he normally is, but the otter pictures are cute. I guess it’s good he doesn’t take it seriously and can have fun with the comparison, but it also felt like he was put on the spot a little with it.

  10. Beth No. 2 says:

    Cringey as hell. Yikes.

  11. AlmondJoy says:

    Well that was uncomfortable.

  12. icerose says:

Otter stuff was boring and repetitive and past it’s sell by date .It reeked of click baiting.Apart from the hospital stuff which I knew about anyway Depp was pretty monosyllabic .
Definitely preferred the second half with McAvoy and Radcliffe but I am beginning to find Norton repetitious and only tune in for people like Brannagh and Helen Mirren who can talk intelligently as well as be witty.

    • Sochan says:

      @Icerose

You made a great point: Norton seems to enjoy holding certain actors up for ridicule and self-mockery, but the legends he treats with respect. I think both Cumberbatch and Hiddleston are perfectly capable of being both intelligent and witty, yet time and time again Norton devises embarrassing scenarios for them to play out in front of older, more idolized actors. These actors need to stop saying yes to these stupid charades.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Hiddleston has only been on once – something he brought up when he did his imitation of Norton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzqWPDnYEik

But, as you point out, Cumberbatch is a frequent guest and to some extent, he must agree to some of it.

      • Gwen says:

        +1000
…i think he knew what was coming and agreed, that says a lot…..

      • icerose says:

Graham uses stars like Hiddleston and Cumberbatch as click bate although I did find some of the conversation between Tom and D Niro interesting -the otter stuff was just stupid and repetitive made Benny look like a bit of a buffoon.

    • neutral says:

Icerose – I got to see Branagh in a Winter’s Tale on Thursday courtesy of NT Live. Have you caught it yet?

      • icerose says:

no we are booked for an encore after Xmas but it did very well numbers wise on the day. Branagh’s theatre shows which have sold out and have taken over as most wanted tickets for live shows

  13. Kitten says:

    Cringetastic.
It’s good that he can make fun of himself I guess? I don’t know…I find the late-night talk show formula so uninspired and redundant so maybe I’m the wrong person to ask..

    • Nancy says:

Kitten: I need to get my husband to take me out more because I have not one clue who this man is…..other than seeing him on this site and others like it. He is odd looking and find his wife resembles him. Anyway, guess I’m a social misfit. One holiday down, one to go….hope yours was good with your fancy French name!

    • Sochan says:

Graham Norton is one of the worst. I don’t know how/why he’s so popular. It’s the same dumb stuff over and over. His treatment of Cumberbatch is horrendous. Who parades out a grown man and makes him pose as pictures of an animal — and right in front of more iconic actors? It’s not even funny. It’s asinine and played-out and stupid.

      • Bettyrose says:

SOCHAN, ITA, but the look on BC’s face when he first sees that enormous teddy was priceless. I also sort of enjoyed that he was a good sport about the whole thing as I imagine him rather stuffy IRL.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And BC would have agreed to it beforehand.

      • Fluff says:

He used to be hilarious, when he had his original late night show. Now he’s trying to be mainstream and it doesn’t work.

      • icerose says:

and why does Benny allow it -he can say no

      • j says:

because it’s promo and i don’t think they had a lot of options. talk show bits are often run by guests when they arrive or the same day of taping, so it’s not like they had hours to come up with alternatives. sometimes you’ve got to just suck it up.

they can’t talk about projects too much besides black mass here, but bc’s role is small and depp did not appear capable of handling the interview. he seemed really out of it.

good news for the charity tho that vid making the rounds could help increase bidding

  14. MexicanMonkey says:

Well, I didn’t really find TH to be extra, just a bit fangirly, I guess. And this was fine, less cringey and more boring because he’s talked about the otter thing on GN before. Although the attack was a bit OTT.
McAvoy was Charming as usual, he’s one of my favorites to watch. But this whole season of GN has been really disappointing so far.

    • Clairej says:

I loved Tom on Graham. He was fully fangirling out and beyond excited – either that or had snorted a lot of coke. I can’t wait to see this as I love Benedict, always think he is a good sport and very cool.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And he waited his turn, didn’t interrupt the others and performed on command with some obvious nervousness due to the presence of DeNiro, who took it in stride.

    • Jellybean says:

I thought McAvoy was filthy, in a very understated way. I loved it!

    • icerose says:

McAvoy was great but if I was his mother I would wash his mouth out with soap but at least it was not repetitive .The best thing about Tom’s appearance was that it had Kenneth Branagh in it as and I was hoping we would get some interesting conversation but GN went for all the imitation stuff and it became tedious as well and it was only the tidbits about the film which made it more interesting.
To be honest i found the discussion circles prior to the Oscars more interesting and witty and it was often the more obscure actors like Timothy Spall who came over as having more humility and were naturally witty and less repetitive

  15. Fluff says:

    Cute.

  16. Bettyrose says:

JD consistently had a drink in his hand ..but maybe he was just slowly nursing a single drink? One time in 7th grade, I was gazing at him on 21JS, thinking I’d give anything to kiss a boy that cute just once. Didn’t have that same reaction this time.

    • Nancy says:

Lol….thanks for sharing Bettyrose! Bet you kissed a lot of cute boys since then….!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Everyone drinks on Graham Norton’s show.

      • Nancy says:

Remember on Seinfeld when Kramer redid the Merv Griffin set and had guests on, like George and the zoo guy….well I’d like to be a guest on Graham’s show….even though it’s 10:23 am on a Sunday, I could use a Scotch rocks seeing how I’m not a holiday girl…..but having kids makes that an unwise decision!

      • Lilacflowers says:

You could share the scotch with the kids and knock them out but that would have other repercussions.

      • Nancy says:

Liliacflowers: Yeah that might be a situation. But, don’t know why their dad can’t take them shopping or something. It’s just me, they all love that falalala la la la la business down at the mall. I’m going to put a plan in motion. Lol…I’m a bad mom, but they seem to like me.

      • Lilacflowers says:

My mom used to banish us from the house on weekends. My dad was always trying to find places to take us. I swear the staff at the local natural history museum would run for cover when they saw us coming.

    • Barb says:

Probably because he’s 52 yo now.

  17. Ally8 says:

BC seemed exasperated by the bit but played along anyway, then took out his frustrations on the bear. The mimicry was impressive, as was the athleticism and comic timing of the bear antics. I thought it threaded the needle of being professional then showing “cast me in other violent movies” range beyond the girlish fandom. (-:

I think it’s fine for that fandom to exist, obvs. but after a while I can see how it gets degrading to constantly be asked to comment on it or perform for it specifically. He’s an adult, not a cover boy on Lisa Simpson’s Non Threatening Boys magazine. That said, he did engage with it with the nightly stage door work, so maybe he needs to be more standoffish there, too.

    • Char says:

That’s how I read the segment. I think because JD tends to not speak much in interviews, the gimmick was a way to fill the air time.

The whole show would have worked better if all four guests were on the couch together instead of spilitting into two segments. Norton’s show is at its best when the guests are engaged with each other.

  18. Lilacflowers says:

    Cringeembouche! BEnEdict CumbErcringe.

  19. Des says:

Depp is so…. greasy. Ew. Take a shower. I felt for Cumby, being kissed by that.

Cumby was fine. I felt he rolled his eyes a bit when Graham pulled out the otter pics since he’s already been there, done that – and fair enough. Graham needs to up the ante.

    • Barb says:

It’s just all that gel in his hair that makes him look greasy. People who meet him always say he smells very nice.

Pretty sure Cumby didn’t mind the kiss.

Johnny Depp was charming, cute, funny, and looked good. Love him.

  21. TotallyBiased says:

Ah, Kaiser, you’re biased (as obviously I am, too, only differently.) That was world-class cringeworthy, and any pass given the Batch on this as playing along with the host should equally apply to Hiddles’ impressions–since it was clear at the time he was going along with Norton’s plan. He may have gotten carried away, but nothing like kicking and punching a giant teddy bear!

Also, I get they were team-promoting different movies, but why were the guests separate? Half the fun on GN is the group dynamic!

  22. EN says:

I was impressed with BC acting skills. But the otter comparisons are old. Nice of him to go along.

  23. Guest says:

Honestly….sometimes I wish people would stop to take everything so seriously. Some people seem to have a stick up their bums. Graham is a legend for me. May be I prefer him over other hosts because he makes all these superstars look like dorks. They are incredibly relaxed around him. I found Hiddles cringeworthy back then but here is the thing: my friend found him adorable and she is not a fan. For her he seemed awestruck by de Niro which made him look human. Her words. Not mine. I enjoy Cumberbatch at GN every time. He was not extra. He was witty and charming as usual. Love Graham.

    • icerose says:

Norton needs to look at his format it has become predictable, lazy and too fan orientated-it use to be much more interesting and witty.I have never felt Benny is sincere on GN and he definitely plays up to the fans ‘s not my first time of not being impressed by his GN appearance.
I am a Tom fan and definitely felt cheated that he did not get any time which specifically focussed on him and the work he has done with Branagh but I also felt that Graham’s attitude was very dismissive where Tom was concerned

  24. Camille says:

Cringe-worthy AND try hard. And he looks like an alien/lizard hybrid, NOT an otter. If he had done Komodo Dragon poses that would have made more sense.

    • Gwen says:

That’s a good idea, you should bring it to Tumblr they will dash at it…:)

    • bettyrose says:

I googled “Is Cumberbatch an alien lizard” and the results were astonishing. There is quite a field of study out there on this topic.

  25. jammypants says:

I don’t know much about Graham Norton, but his program certainly doesn’t ignite any firings of neurons. It’s all slapstick and gimmick. Yawn. Does this man know how to interview without resorting to the lowest common denominator of topics to discuss?

    • neutral says:

      No.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I don’t think serious interviews are his job. However, his show can be quite entertaining. The appearance of Bill Murray, Matt Damon, and Hugh Bonneville was hilarious from start to finish. There is a lot of schtick but it does tend to be a bit more inventive than on other shows, like Fallon or Kimmel, and his guests do have a tendency to get drunk, which adds to it.

  26. Fluff says:

I think the main reason he’s attracted such an obsessive fanbase is the combination of his ‘unusual’ looks, and the characters he’s played: the borderline autistic who don’t need to conform to society’s norms because he’s a genius.

Sherlock (while he’s played other characters that are similar, most of his fanbase is from Sherlock) is basically wish fulfillment for everyone who can’t/doesn’t want to fit in with people and society, and is maybe bullied or made to feel like an outsider because of it. Sherlock doesn’t care about not fitting in or having good social skills, he’s just “fuck you, I can do whatever I want because I’m brilliant.” And the people around him, even the ones who dislike him personally, are forced to grovel to him because he genuinely is brilliant. That’s a fantasy for a lot of people, and it’s no wonder so many of his fans have a hard time understanding that Benedict is not Sherlock and not Tietjens.

That’s probably why part of his fandom went into utter meltdown when he married a conventionally pretty woman from a posh wealthy family who wears expensive designer dresses and poses for Vogue. Because it’s a betrayal of the “dorkybatch” persona that they’d created and projected onto him.

  27. Die Zicke says:

See, I didn’t find Hiddleston or Cumberbatch really that cringe worthy. Hiddleston definitely seemed more nervous though. I think late night shows are kind of silly and both of them have been kind of silly on the show, and they should be.

  28. LAK says:

    Oh Johnny. What happened?

  29. Juniper says:

It was obviously very planned out before hand – obvious that BC was told this was going to happen -so that saved some of the embarrassment of the whole thing by making him into a bit of a good sport. But it did get cringe-worthy. It seems to have been done perhaps because they were fully aware of just how difficult an interview Depp would be. With his excruciatingly slow delivery of every sentence he said and about things that really weren’t all that fascinating to anyone but himself…. well, it wasn’t great tv. Also, BC and Depp didn’t really have the greatest of rapports. Depp was looking at the whole thing like WTF?, which really didn’t help matters. And then, they both left, at which point Graham brought on James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. The contrast was so large it was almost as if to say, -‘Hey – here is what two people that have something to say to each other and like each other’s company actually look like.’

    • icerose says:

yes to this-cringe worthy is something that does not bother me but repetition and an overdose of fan click baiting does annoy me.

    • hermia says:

Depp was WTFing and BC was, as usual, sycophantic: “My friendship with Johnny had to re-start all over again when I met him months later” or something. Friendship????? You worked with him on a movie! I think that’s the thing about BC that annoys me the most, actually.
Radcliffe and McAvoy looked like they could be friends and neither of them was high or drunk.

    • Dania says:

I didn’t find Depp to be “difficult” at all. He seemed very relaxed and at ease.

You really didn’t find him talking about meeting Prince Charles and visiting sick children’s hospitals to be fascinating? Well, the video featuring him talking about the experience of visiting parents and children at Great Ormond Street Hospital reached over 1.6 million views, it got more views than the ‘otter pose’ video. The interview was a success from the looks of it.

  30. mmm says:

it was fun, despite that Johnny can’t seem comfortable at any interview he tried to play along with the fun of Benedict.
