Viola Davis covers InStyle: ‘Unwritten racial casting rules absolutely still exist’

viola1

I find Viola Davis to be one of the most inspirational of all the Hollywood actresses. Viola does not tolerate fools, but mostly my admiration for her comes from her complete and utter honesty about her experiences as an African-American woman in this country, and in her industry. Her Emmy speech this year will probably be included on many of the “best of the year” lists, I’m assuming. Viola covers the new issue of InStyle Magazine, and she talks about aging (she’s 50 years old), her spa addiction, racialized casting and how she feels about being an adoptive mother to her daughter Genesis.

She’s didn’t always have high fashion: “Back in the day, my style was whatever was different and cheap. I was an artist, and I wanted my clothes to reflect that. I now understand fashion in a way that I don’t even have a language for. I know designers. Before, you could’ve put a gun to my head and asked me to name just one designer and I would’ve been dead.”

She’s a spa addict: “I am addicted to spas. If we go to a hotel, we’ll be the only people in that spa for hours. We’ll start at 5 in the morning sometimes.”

On aging and her value: “What’s released me most from the fear of aging is self-awareness. I’ve never determined my value based on my looks or anything physical. I’ve been through a lot in life, and what has gotten me through is strength of character and faith.”

Adopting her daughter Genesis Tennon: “I always tell Genesis she was born from my heart, not my belly. There are so many ways to mother rather than to carry a child in your body. So many children need parents, and so many of us want to mother. Know that you will experience motherhood to the full extent.”

Renewing her vows to her husband: “I’ve learned that it’s not always about you. Marriage is a dying to yourself, but [also this] renewing and being born into a state of commitment, of understanding the value of partnership in life.”

Racialized casting: “Unwritten racial casting rules absolutely still exist. I’ve played many best friends, crack-addicted mothers, next-door neighbors, or professionals with no personal lives. It goes back to perception. There is a limitation to how we are seen.”

[From InStyle & People]

There’s so much truth to everything she says. I believe this: “There are so many ways to mother rather than to carry a child in your body.” Like many women, she came to motherhood through adoption and her daughter is her everything.

I also love that Viola still challenged Hollywood – in her quiet, determined way – about the inequities she still sees around her. And she’s right, she’s played the second-fiddle characters for so long, which is why she loves playing a fully-fledged hot mess in How to Get Away with Murder.

    Great interview. Very insightful

  2. Elisa the I. says:

    More Viola Davis, please.
Also, I love the top she is wearing on the cover. Totally my style.

  3. Sasha says:

I really enjoy her as a celebrity. I think I will purchase this copy of InStyle to show support about the kind of people I want to see on magazine covers.

+1. Same with preferring movies where the leads are women, PoC, minorities in general. Movies directed by women, written by women. Aren’t we all kind of tired of bro movies where the leads are always white men looking badass and getting the (younger) white girl?

      • Elisa the I. says:

I’m tired of any movie where old unattractive idiotic dudes get the hot young smart girls. I’m looking at you, Adam Sandler.

  4. Capepopsie says:

    Wow!!
    She is gorgeous and smart!
    Love her

  5. Shambles says:

    She said it all.

    She’s beautiful in every way.

  6. vauvert says:

Very insightful, very warm and very real. Some people have both brains and emotional intelligence- she was also blessed with talent and beauty. I wish her the very best. And yes, you can see the racialized casting all the time. How many shows or movies have a minority in the main role?

  7. lucy2 says:

She is simply the best. Every time she does an interview, she makes excellent points on hard hitting subjects, and leaves me feeling inspired. Plus she’s incredibly talented.

  8. poppy says:

she melts my cold crotchety heart.
she is amazing -smart talented beautiful gracious.

  9. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Her skin tone is gaw-jus on the cover!

I also really enjoy hearing her speak. So much of celebrity is artifice and nonsense and so many times it’s just enjoyable to hear a knowledgable grown woman speak the truth. The best thing about Viola is she doesn’t bite her tongue and I love her for that. Her daughter is truly blessed to have such a wise mother.

  10. Cynthia says:

Not liking the cover, she looks a little bit oily not dewy. they could have styled her better and show off that amazing body.

  11. AlmondJoy says:

I love her so much. Such an inspiration! And while she’s physically flawless I don’t always notice it because she has this great beauty that shines from within. You can actually FEEL it through her words. Thanks for posting about my favorite actress, Kaiser! 😘

  12. senna says:

Her line about her daughter made me weepy. She sounds like a lovely human being. (psst…all you spa addicts need to check out Therme Vals in Switzerland. I went there for my honeymoon and it was everything).

  13. Alex says:

I’ve had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a few things recently and let me tell you I could listen to her talk forever. She is so wise and speaking to her struggle and bringing it to the table as a larger issue. Very eloquent. She’s done so much since she’s had the spotlight and I need more.

Her daughter is the cutest and sounds super proud of her mom. She dressed as Viola for halloween which was hilarious

Sidenote: I’m really sad this this thread will have a low number of comments as opposed to the KKlan thread of the day 😔

    • poppy says:

me too. because she is loved, no less!
must comment so our beloved reporters here keep covering her, as they should, since viola is a RARE Hollywood creature.

    • Marty says:

Same, I try not to post on any KK’s posts if I can help it.

  15. I Choose Me says:

LOVE her. Love the cover. Love everything she had to say.

  16. MildredFierce says:

Ahh, yes The Julliard grad…is a privilege she NEVER ACKNOWLEDGES. It is a privilege most actresses of any color would give their left arm for. And there is “unwritten radical casting” in Julliard and In Yale School of Drama MFA. And these actors from these schools in particular are given the privilege to be looked at first in the elistist theater world in NYC. Theater directors are snob and it is virtually impossible to break into legit (non musical) theater without going to maybe 5 schools, Juliard, NYU MFA, Yale MFA, ACT and Old Globe.
I thinks she is wonderful actress, but she doesn’t really ever acknowledge despite her color, she has a distinct advantage over other actresses from the get go because she went to an elite school.

    • renee28 says:

You do realize she got into Julliard because of merit and not some family connection. That’s not privilege that’s just talent. And even with a degree she’s still at a disadvantage. She not offered the same roles that white women are. You sound like Nancy Lee Grahn with this imagined privilege.

  17. maggie says:

    Lovely woman.

  18. Cat says:

@MildredPierce, do you realize that her Julliard credential is her very own accomplishment which testifies to her merit and talent as an actress?? You made it sound like it was handed to her without an iota of hard work.

  19. Marty says:

She is such a beautiful woman inside and out. Het Emmy speech is one of my all time favorite specches. She managed to make such a powerful statement with a single sentence.

  20. Kco says:

I just love this woman! She should be a guest on EVERY women in Hollywood panel. She speaks so much truth and life into this industry, which is VERY reflective of racialized life in this backwards country. I think Hollywood fears her, and her straight forward, doesn’t mince her words, honest self.

    More Viola!!

  21. i feel like people say her and Lupita are “so stunning” but dont really mean it…. because they would look twice at a woman with those features and looks in everyday….

but i mean it when I say viola is really beautiful… in the strip it all away and what have we here…

she is the type of person who only needs lipstick and her kinky hair is like art….. i just could go on about her…. i love that rich deep ebony almost blue black hue….. She’s like a walking statue and work of art… i find myself staring at women or men with this look…. they look otherworldly to me…. (I feel this way about tilda swinton and julianne moore and a lot of alabaster red/hair combos as well)

  22. Pinetree13 says:

She’s 50!?!? Holy smokes I must be aging horribly!!!!!! I would have never guessed that as her age she looks mid 30’s to me :O

Her midsection also looks like that of someone much younger.

I done being shallow; she also seems smart!

  23. KCAT says:

    Yes Viola. Spill the tea.
