Melissa McCarthy premieres holiday fashion line: pretty and travel-friendly?

melissa-mccarthy-02-600x800
Melissa McCarthy, holidays and clothes – some of my favorite things (you are welcome to hear Julie Andrews singing that last line if you like.) Melissa is having a good week, first her Golden Globe nomination and now her Holiday line for Seven7 is out:

In the new holiday 2015 campaign, McCarthy models crystal-adorned tops, black skinnies and her signature high-heeled pumps (all of which are available to shop now!) while decked out in holiday lights and wreaths.

And the rest of the holiday collection incorporates a mix of party-ready favorites (in the form of a jumpsuit and sparkly skirts) with travel-friendly pieces as well (just check out the comfy-meets-cute track pant and jeweled sweatshirt!).

Melissa’s personal fashion has evolved for the better. There have been some hair moments we would all like to forget and some questionable print choices but she can really rock a suit. I feel her red carpet game is about 50/50 (kind of like her movies) and her Holiday line falls into that pattern – a couple off pieces don’t deliver but the bulk are good basics, which plays well for work parties and general holiday shenanigans. Many of her fancy tops are simple shapes with sparkle; I tend to gravitate to bling – I live in LA, they promote a “HEY, LOOK AT ME” dress code so I dig them (I love me a dolman sleeve.) Plus they all look like they travel well and there is nothing worse than trying to pack swanky clothes for travel… okay, there are about a million things worse than that but when you are in the moment, it feels really big. She’s showing a ponte pencil skirt that is begging for me.

Melissa is selling clothes; as much as I adore her, I am not going to pretend like she is a champion of justice here. However, “she’s on a mission to mainstream sizes in shopping departments” because, as she says, she is selling clothes to women, not just a certain sized women:

“I know what it’s like not being able to go shopping with my friends because ‘women like me’ have been hidden away on a different floor next to the tire section,” she told PEOPLE.

I agree with all fashion being mainstreamed; style is style and unless you are in your 40s and wearing children’s clothing, we all belong together (somebody start Kumbaya, would you, please?) I would love to be able to browse Seven7 in my local store, especially for its ponchos, capes and cutecocoons;” because let’s face it, some days are screaming for you to wear a cocoon.

Melissa doesn’t need anything but her smile, to make her look beautiful!

  2. Jenn says:

I was excited to see her coming out with clothing, but was very disappointed in the first pieces. Yeah, I’m fat but I don’t want to wear a shapeless tent of a top, and that’s what most of them were. Here’s hoping the newer stuff is better

Sadly her designs, do not follow the #plusisequal thought.
The plus sized chain she is selling at, her designs are big and boxy, and no way give any shape.

Plus they are overpriced. JMHO of course.

        Please, people, understand this:

Plus-size women do themselves no favors when they want all their clothes to be full of colors and prints. White or pale pink leggings make almost no one look good.

Embrace black and a tailored, sleek silhouette instead of gaudy colors and unflattering volume.

Don’t believe me? Buy a 3-way mirror and see yourself the way the world does.

There are lots of ways to camouflage areas or fool the eye if you work at it.

You can add color in accessories, shoes, boots, jewelry, etc.
And a big beautiful woman who wears a sexy tight outfit with confidence always looks good.

        .

      • Jenn says:

Joan-because I’m fat I can’t wear colours? You know what they say, opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one and they all stink.

      • PsychoCat says:

@Jenn – as a fellow fatty, I want to hug you right now. Magnificently and eloquently expressed.

Where are the colors? Any different shapes to compliment curves? Ugh. I’m a plus sized girl but I don’t dress like a granny and I actually am able to find nice clothing in lots of places.

A lot of people assume plus size means that all larger women are built the same. No. They all have their own shape and wearing potato sacks doesn’t do favors for anyone. This doesn’t seem to have much thought put into it; still love Melissa.

    • joan says:

Don’t you use accessories? Scarves? Jewelry?

Even a fashion model doesn’t necessarily look good in a lot of color. It depends on if the color flatters her coloring.

Look at Red Carpet comments if you think wearing a whole outfit in eggplant works — even on a movie star.

Some plus-size women make themselves look bigger, and more dowdy, by gravitating to, say, pastels, or too much volume. I think they want to feel pretty. There are tricks to look sleeker, or at least not bigger.

Even models and actresses and celebrities are careful about choosing what shows off their best features and camouflages their worst. And even they don’t always succeed.

But they use tricks to look sleek and so do many other women.

      • Lindy says:

Joan, who are you replying to? Your comments to plus size women in the comments completely ignores what they are saying while imploring them to dress more fashionably. It’s really weird. Plus size women have to make do with the clothing they can get a lot of the time, it’s not that they are trying to look bad, it’s just that quality plus size clothing is prohibitively expensive and the choices are limited and only go up to s certain size. It’s really hard to build an entire wardrobe with so many restrictions. Anyway, when I see plus size women they are usually dressed pretty similarly to everyone else, it’s usually older plus size women who revert to the potato sack or all one color pantsuits.

Is her line a full range of sizes or just larger sizes? I think there are some cute pieces!

ETA – I just read her fit guide – it is a full range! I’m dying for the vegan moto pants!

  5. Tig says:

I like the photo shoot! The styling is too cute. Her hair is incredible in these pics! It maybe the lighting, but her hair looks redder than it has in the past-really makes her eyes pop. And shoes??? Will they be in stores or just on line?

    • Bridget says:

I always just assume that she’s wearing Brian Atwoods, since she’s tight with him. Plus I think the line is clothes, not shoes?

  6. Jayna says:

I don’t think the movie got great reviews, but I enjoyed her in that movie with Jason Bateman. Of course, I love any comedy with Jason Bateman, bad or good, but they had such great chemistry together. Identity Thief was the name of the movie. She’s so funny.

  7. lucy2 says:

She looks great, and I’m glad this is going well for her.
I just browsed most of the collection – not a big fan of the tops, but I’m seriously debating that skirt, and it’s nice to see jeans and pants displayed in something besides a size 000.

  8. Alex says:

Just love her. She always seems so positive and joyful. Beautiful woman!

  9. JustJen says:

She looks great! My curiosity is nudging me..wasn’t there a blind item about someone having Bariatric surgery? I wonder if she did…not that I have a problem with it (of course).

  10. K says:

Checking out her site. Some great patterns on the blouses, but good gawd do I hate the hi-lo hem. I find it very unflattering.

  11. EscapedConvent says:

Melissa looks really good here. Her hair is gorgeous; I don’t know why it looks so different to me. Glad she started a clothing line. She knows what it’s like not to be able to find clothes. And it’s great to hear that her sizes run a good spectum to include so many women.

  12. Reine_Didon says:

Good for her ! It is so important to mainstream all sizes and shapes, enough with the Gisele body type media dictatorship.
I went shopping with my friend here at Mtl and was shoked to discover she couldn’t dress at popular shops as nothing would fit her (in size and height). As a “normal” sized girl it never occured to me that someone would struggle to find clothes that fit. I felt so guilty and so bad. Also I used to work in a Beauty department and I discovered that a lot of black girls can’t find their foundation color in Dior, Guerlain, Clarins, etc… The companies stop at dark golden shades. There’s still a lot to be done. Good for Melissa for mediatizing one of these issues !

  13. Miss M says:

    I loved the movie Spy!
I wish her the best on her fashion line!
But what I really care about is to know if she will be in the Gilmore girls reunion.

    • Egla says:

Gilmor girls reunion?!???!! When?!??? They will just get together or there will be more episodes???? You can tell i miss that series sooooo much. I feel ashamed now…but still need answers

  14. mkyarwood says:

I think she’s looking a bit Hollywoodized. She’d better show up for the reunion. Also, I think the style of these clothes is meant to be more in line with what’s fashionable right now. Shapeless sack shirts are in for ‘normal’ women too. I usually belt mine, because a pear shape looks like a box in anything except bodycon dresses.
