Bradley Cooper to direct Beyonce in ‘A Star Is Born’ remake: amazing or nah?

wenn23084471

Can Beyonce act? Why is Bradley Cooper a thing? These are questions I really need answered. It’s one of the biggest surprises to me that B-Coop has emerged as a fully-fledged movie star and leading man, especially since (in my opinion) he just plays variations on the same character in every one of his films. But Bradley is seen as successful enough to make the jump to directing his first feature, and soon. As for Beyonce… I don’t think she can act, at all, but I enjoy seeing her try. And so we’ve come to this! The long-gestating remake of A Star Is Born might be happening again, with Bradley Cooper directing Beyonce. OH YES.

Bradley Cooper is moving ahead with his planned directorial debut — a remake of the classic “A Star Is Born” — and Beyoncé is on board to star with him, sources tell Page Six. But insiders added that although Cooper’s now meeting with producers in Hollywood to back the project, the film won’t be ready to go before cameras until the end of next year, or possibly January 2017.

As a result, Cooper is now trying to squeeze in an acting role before going into preproduction on “A Star Is Born,” but sources said he needs to find the right script that will let him “disappear” into a part and shake off two bombs — chef drama “Burnt” and Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha.”

“Beyoncé is a go,” said a source of Cooper’s remake of “A Star Is Born,” which originated in 1937, was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976 with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand. Our source added Cooper’s still seeking the rest of the cast. “He’s out to find the rest of the cast, but he may take another acting role [in the meantime]. He’s furiously making everything he can.”

Beyoncé’s reportedly been taking acting lessons and looking for “an iconic dramatic role.” She was originally said to be interested in the “A Star Is Born” remake when it was to be helmed by Cooper’s “American Sniper” director Clint Eastwood, who then dropped out. After “American Sniper” raked in more than $350 million at the box office, Cooper impressed critics on Broadway in “The Elephant Man,” then landed in two underperfoming movies. Also, his role in “Joy” was just snubbed by the Golden Globes.

“He is looking to really disappear into his next role,” said a Hollywood source. “That’s where Bradley’s best — in ‘American Sniper,’ ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’” Either way, one lined-up role he’ll really disappear into is as CGI character Rocket Raccoon in “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2,” which won’t hit theaters until May 2017. He’s also been rumored to direct another movie starring Robert De Niro, “Honeymoon With Harry.” Reps didn’t get back to us.

[From Page Six]

Ha, I didn’t realize it but yes, Bradley has had a terrible year. Burnt barely made back its production cost and Aloha didn’t even come close. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal, except that American Sniper made SO MUCH money and everyone thought B-Coop could sail into anything after that and still be successful. I don’t think it’s fair to put Joy’s box office (it hasn’t been released yet) or nomination-snubs on B-Coop though – from what I understand, he’s just got a supporting part. The film rests completely on Jennifer Lawrence’s shoulders, so if it bombs, she’ll get the blame. Still, Bradley’s got two bombs this year and Hollywood is still willing to reward him by financing his move to the director’s chair. I wonder if the money would have been there if Bradley wasn’t a white guy?

So, are you feeling B-Coop’s transition into director, especially with a remake of A Star Is Born? I am not. But I think it will probably be so bad, it will end up being a delightful hate-watch and it will achieve some kind of cult-like status. Especially if Bradley directs himself in the Kris Kristofferson/James Mason role. OMG. I NEED THAT TO HAPPEN.

I think this would have been a great idea 10 years ago. B is too old now.

    • SamiHami says:

Unless they switch it up and have her be the older, established star on her way down. Which I’m sure she would never tolerate.

Seriously, why are they remaking this? It was a mistake when they remade it with Streisand years ago and it’s a mistake now. Ugh.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

@Samihami Hollywood loves remaking movies because in their mind they’ll make money since people already love them. What they don’t know is that I’ll refuse to go if it’s crap & stars someone who can’t act. If it was an original script I would say go ahead but stop with the remaking find some good scripts out there.

      • SwanLake says:

Sami, I’m with you! Well said.

    • BossyKat says:

Wha? Who says the Star is Born female lead has to be a youngster? Streisand’s version with Kris Kristofferson wasn’t and it was a hit that spawned many chart Toppers. Streisand was probably older than Bey is now when she made it.

The biggest problem with a Bey and Bradley Cooper remake…..

Is that while I think Cooper is a good actor, I just don’t believe his on screen chemistry with various leading ladies. He comes across as too self aware, or just not that into them…or something. Don’t think Bey would be any different.

    • QQ says:

Nevermind the fact that Beysus acting is PURE HILARITY, is like watching pinnocchio in its wooden Boy phase but with a sexy southernly accent, NO

      • Jib says:

Beyonce can’t sing, so her not being able to act will be business as usual. 🙂 This should be good. Get the popcorn.

    • FingerBinger says:

@cleveland girl Beyonce is about the same age as Barbra Streisand when she did film. She’s not too old.

    • Me Three says:

Nah…it was boring with Streisand and it will be worse with B. It will tank. For some reason studios keep pouring money into sure losers as long as male stars like Bradley are involved.

    • Sabrina says:

      GOD NO!!!!!!! Beyoncé can’t act

  2. NewWester says:

Is Beyoncé side-eyeing the idea of Bradley directing himself in the Kris Kristofferson/James Mason role?
I think this may end up like the Mommie Dearest movie with Faye Dunaway. Like Kaiser said a delightful hate/-watch

    • Breakfast Margaritas says:

,,IIRC, Clint Eastwood was supposed to direct Beysus in this a few years ago but Beysus cooled to the idea after Eastwood did his dementia frosted “Empty Chair” performance about President Obama at the Republican National convention. Beysus is part of the Obama Squad

    • Jellybean says:

It will be bad. I can’t stand Cooper, he is in all ways creepy.

  3. Mimz says:

I don’t think she’s a terrible actress, I’ve seen much, much worse, and if someone will portray a great singer, i’d rather have a real singer acting on it, than some good actress not singing for real (i really, really hate lip sync in movies).
But I also think Bey is too old for that now, she’s going to be almost 40 when it comes out, so I don’t know.
But hey, I don’t think Brad cooper is as a great actor either, but both people are known to bring big bucks so, what do I know?

  4. Sixer says:

    I am not either.

But it’s almost Christmas and I think a B-Coop post without booty shorts is most dreadfully Scrooge-like of you, Kaiser. I clicked only for the booty shorts.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ha – great minds and all that.

      • Sixer says:

I think our glorious leaders should give us a Photos for Christmas post. Beige booty shorts, Katie Bucket’s helicopter hair – any other suggestions? We could end it with The Bloke + dogs?

      • lilacflowers says:

Something with Idris. The Bloke and some more dogs. Fake Baby. Cheez-its.

And for me, Christmas just came early with the High-Rise trailer.

      • mimif says:

The end of the year recaps are going to suck because it’s aaaaall about Bendy and his 700 comments that you nut jobs are contributed to. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Mimif, but we didn’t actually talk about BendyOtter on those threads

      • Sixer says:

I cannot believe that you would take the holy name of Bendy the Bouncer in vain like that. It’s an outrage.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Of course he had a bad year once he took off the beige booty shorts.

I can barely remember A Star is Born, but wasn’t that a pretty mediocre film to begin with?

  6. tifzlan says:

No. No. No. No. Never. No.

Queen Judy Garland and James Mason were perfection im those roles and in that movie and it does not need a remake in any way, shape or form unless Bradley and Beyonce were to resurrect Queen Judy from the dead and refilm the whole thing with her.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And that was a remake of the Janet Gaynor Frederic Marsh version

    • Jellybean says:

I think it is a pretty standard theme and could be done well in a number of ways, but these two actors hardly stand up well against Garland and Mason.

  7. Sochan says:

Middle-30’s Beyonce? She’s all wrong for the role, even if she takes off all her makeup and loses 5 years. Also, enough with the remakes!

  8. CK says:

I’m torn. I’d love to see a remake of this classic, but not with Beyonce. I’m a huge Beyonce fan, but I’d rather see Aniki Noni Rose, Patina Miller, Shaniece Williams, etc. etc. before Beyonce. Actually, I need to see this remade with Anika Noni Rose in the lead part. It could be a delightful musical hate-watch. Those are always fun. Remember Burlesque?

  9. LAK says:

I love all versions of this film, BUT Beyonce in the role of the ingenue doesn’t pass go for me.

It says everything that she’s searching for ‘an iconic dramatic’ role. Somebody clearly thinks a lot of their own talent. Not to mention that she could try finding said iconic role on her own and produce and act in it.

This just reminds me of DREAMGIRLS and the schedenfreude of Beyonce watching Jennifer Hudson walk away with that film. To extent that Beyonce invoked the award clause and no one was biting.

    • Naya says:

I never understand criticism of this nature. Do you expect people to aim low? When I apply for that job at a prestigous company, is somebody sitting in the corner sneering at the upstart who doesnt know “her place”? Let Beyonce (and every other person, ESPECIALLY women of color) aim as high as she can dream. If the powers that be dont want her, I’m sure they have no trouble shoving her in the back of the showbiz bus in favor for any one of the talented (<sarcasm) white girls who shots like this are traditionally reserved for.

      • LAK says:

Naya: apple and oranges. Beyonce can’t act. Period. She’s more wooden than a piece of wood. Nothing to do with her colour. Also, who said anything about her colour?? Stop assuming criticism of black women is only about their colour. Afterall, Jennifer Hudson is a black woman, am I criticising her? Or is it that Beyonce must be praised and hired at all costs even if we have ample evidence of her lack of acting talent?

Further to your point that has nothing to do with my comment, Jennifer Hudson had no acting experience yet she produced a powerful performance AND sang her heart out. Star making role. I doubt Jennifer Hudson was thinking I can only audition for ‘iconic dramatic’ roles that will make me a star. She was just auditioning and probably thought herself lucky to be cast with Beyonce the Superstar. And it’s a matter of fact that Beyonce was put out that Jennifer the nobody stole the film and won an oscar to boot.

I reiterate that Beyonce has an inflated sense of her acting talent because she wouldn’t do justice to any ‘iconic dramatic’ roles even if those could be found hanging from the wishing tree.

There is a long list of actors, of all races, who aren’t on Beyonce’s level of fame, who are MORE talented than she is, who can turn a mediocre role into an iconic, dramatic role eg Jennifer Hudson, Lupita Nyong’o, Carmen Ejogo, since you insist on Black actors.

      • Caz says:

Beyoncé is already vain. Doesn’t need another vanity project. She is a terrible actress. Isnt believable onscreen. Nothing to do with colour.

      • Anne tommy says:

This site snarks people of every colour Naya ( not about their colour of course). But Beyonce isn’t exempt. Beyoncé wasn’t terrible in Cadillac Records but didn’t have an awful lot to do. This project sounds pretty boring frankly.

    • Pandy says:

Jennifer Hudson would be a better choice. Younger (ahem up and coming not 40 something already), fantastic voice and she can act. Unlike Beyoncé.

My only hope? Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake – what a match up that would be LOLLLLLL.

  10. Bee says:

Bradley Cooper is a great actor. And honestly you haven’t been paying attention to his career or movies if you think he’s been playing a variation of the same character. I’m really happy for him that he’s emerged as such a great star in these last few years.

    • Josefina says:

Me, too. Look at his filmography – the guy has done everything. Comedy, drama, animation, action, romcoms, etc. And in all those roles, he was great. I get the impression he’s quite a weirdo, but I don’t really understand why he gets so much crap here.

      • BossyKat says:

About Bradley Cooper….I think he’s a great actor (character) less so a ‘leading man,’ …and it’s mainly because I don’t believe his love/relationship scenes (more than anything ‘A Star is Born,’ is a love story) also…his weirdly feminine cheek fillers skeeve me out.

  11. Minxx says:

Bradley is a good and decent actor but he has his limitations and he’s terribly overexposed. But he seems to think he can do anything. Let him direct Beyonce in this.. maybe a huge flop will finally bring him down to earth.

  12. grabbyhands says:

    File under completely unnecessary.

Oscar baity ego trip project for both he and Beyonce (in their defense, it is a normal thing in Hollywood, but still).

  13. minx says:

Sounds like the prescription for a camp classic!

  14. Josefina says:

YAAAAAAASSSS MAMA YAAAAAAAASSSS. This will be such an epic, tacky disaster. Can’t wait.

  15. dr mantis toboggan says:

The answer to the question ” can Beyonce act?” Is : Austin Powers 3

  16. Lea says:

I don’t think Beyoncé is that great of actress, but she wasn’t that bad as Etta James in Cadillac Records. I don’t get why the studio is willing to give Cooper a big budget production as first directing job.

  17. Dancinnancy says:

Too soon for this remake IMO. No one alive is Babs, though many try. I’m not ready to see any of her work remade quite yet, it still holds up.

Has Hollywood truly run out of ideas?

  18. WILZ says:

He denied it saying ”just a rumor”

  19. Melanie says:

Bradley has already denied that he’s doing this movie.

  20. Reece says:

TMZ said those same exact words about Beyonce the other day. I think SOMEBODY’S PR is playing that old game of leaking info so it becomes true.

Whether you like BCoop or not he has always seemed pretty smart when it comes to his career choices. Taking on a big budget film your first time directing is nuts!

I find all of this hard to believe.

  21. LilyLizard says:

I feel like BCoop was only interesting when he was dating Renee, now with his string of super young model girlfriends and his snoozefest roles I’m wondering why the hell I still know his name.

  22. AJ says:

NOOOOO. No. NO. nO. No no no N-O.

  23. kri says:

Oh my god. Talk about a vanity project! Can this please not happen….I don’t feel well.

  24. Farhi says:

BCoop is a good actor, he knows Beyonce can’t act.
What is this about? How is he getting financing for this. Does the studio think that Beyonce is a big enough of a star that he fans will come and spend the money anyway, regardless of the quality of the product? It is a possibility, But has there been a precedent for this assumption?
It seems a lot of movies with big stars are bombing lately if they are not good enough,

  25. Tulsa says:

Why does this movie need to be re-made?

  26. lisa says:

i cant understand a word she says and he is so overrated

  27. HK9 says:

If you’ve seen the version with James Mason and Judy Garland (which is really good and was nominated for an Oscar) you know this is going to be bad. I think they have to go to Jenifer Hudson with this (she’s the one with the Oscar and it’s for a reason) or get a Broadway actress to do it. I love Bey but no-you need real chops with this one.

  28. kimbers says:

Boring. Beyonce needs to stop trying to be some great actress bc she just doesnt have “it”. She’s a great female vocalist and that’s great…

This idea of a remake is been there done that and i get Bey needs to rebrand herself, but picking such an over done movie that has numerous remakes and adaptions? Very unoriginal and not gonna get her an oscar.

Bradley as a director? I dont have confidence since his picks for a movie and actress are just about the most boring, generic and unoriginal ideas I’ve heard in forever. Sucks bc I would have rooted for him if it was an idea out of the box and not from the recycled bin.

    • Smoky says:

I don’t even think she’s a great vocalist; performer? yeah, somewhat. Been marketed to high heaven? Definitely. But when compared to vocalists for greatness Broadway has many, many, many..younger and older…that have much more natural talent than her. Not saying she doesn’t deserve/hasn’t earned a certain level of her place in music, but to me she’s always been overrated. JMHO

      • Breakfast Margaritas says:

She has vocal talent just as Cristina, Pink, Mariah, and Aria do. That their style is not Broadway doesn’t diminish their talent.

      • Smoky says:

I didn’t say not being Broadway diminished her talent; what I said was her talent (on it’s own) as a vocalist is not all that, imo. My thought for a strong VOCALIST was a Broadway voice that is strong, agile, supple, etc., but I could have pointed out others in R/B, past and present, country, pop, adult contemporary, etc. I just chose Broadway as start. My point remains, while Bey is talented vocally, she is not above and beyond, imho. Her Oscar stint when she performed all the nominated songs still irritates the hella out of me…I mean, really? Those who sang them should have been allowed to do so…but marketing. She is a decent enough singer but she is not a world class vocalist.

      • Jib says:

@BreakfastMargaritas, if her voice is so reliable, why does she lip-sync every live performance?? Did you ever see the video of Beyonce falling down the stairs in concert?? She “sang” all the way down the stairs. LOL!! Whenever I am feeling blue, I watch that video because it’s so funny – and thankfully, she was fine, except for her ego.

      • lisa says:

i dont think she is a great singer. she’s better than a lot of other pop stars but that doesnt mean she’s that good.

  29. Gg says:

In my mind they have a steamy onset affair!

  30. FuefinaWG says:

I think a better choice would have been Adele.
I’m not a hard-core Adele fan, and I’m not crazy about the songs I’ve heard, so far, on her new “album,” but her voice is something that just makes you stop and listen.
    Beyonce is too “common”, IMHO.
    I hate common …

  31. Lilacflowers says:

Cooper has said that this story is not true

  32. Dr. Funkenstein says:

Beyonce can’t act to save her life. That, and the fact that the only part in this film for which she’d now be suitable is as “older sister,” or “teen mom to startlet,” means that it’s DOA.

  33. this is gonna be a slaughter house of hilarity.

  34. Dj says:

I agree with Kaiser. Why is B Coop a thing? B Coop does not have charisma or the “It” factor for a leading man. He does not seem to have chemistry with his leading ladies. Only my opinion though.

  35. Harryg says:

Oh great! She’ll be gyrating and mumbling, and he’ll be manic with manic eyes!

  36. Rockin Robin says:

What did we do to deserve this? Ugh.

  37. kitty-bye says:

It isn’t April Fools yet is it? 😀 No!
