Azealia Banks was arrested for assault in NYC after biting a security guard

I am not a believer in Azealia Banks. You can argue that she’s talented, or that she’s a truth-teller or whatever, but mostly she just seems (to me) like a violent, homophobic, unhinged famewhore who occasionally stumbles upon a valid social criticism. Should her occasionally correct social criticisms validate the rest of her existence? Not so much. It’s like she’s unmanageable – it’s one thing to start a Twitter beef to promote your music, it’s quite another to develop a career where you’re just being an a—hole on Twitter full-time.

Anyway, Banks has had another brush with the law. Back in September, Banks got into some kind of ridiculous altercation on a plane because a French couple temporarily blocked her path (they were retrieving their bags from an overhead bin). She spit at them, punched them and hurled obscene homophobic slurs at them. Banks wasn’t arrested for that, because the couple declined to press charges. And now this happened:

New York rapper Azealia Banks, who’s rumored to be on Rihanna’s new album, was arrested outside Meatpacking club Up&Down on Wednesday after she allegedly went berserk and attacked a female security guard by punching her and “biting her in the boob,” sources said. She was later arraigned and released on her own recognizance. Banks, 24, was at the club for a private party when she got into a dispute with bouncers and was tossed at about 12:30 a.m. Police sources said she was taken to the Sixth Precinct on a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault and held there for evaluation till Wednesday evening.

The arrest comes after Banks was nearly busted in September for an outburst on a Delta flight from New York to LA that was caught on video. She was also investigated after allegedly assaulting a security guard at Break Room 86 in Los Angeles in October.

This time, spies said the trouble began when Banks arrived with an invited guest for the birthday of one of the club’s owners, Ronnie Madra. “It was an invite-only party,” said a witness. “You needed a stamp to get in.” When Banks tried to enter the private downstairs party and was told she had to go back upstairs to get a stamp, an altercation broke out with bouncers.

“There was a female security guard and a male guard,” a source said, adding they “didn’t recognize Banks” — who began “screaming at the top of her lungs, cursing” and using racial slurs. A club owner noticed the commotion and “gave her a pass to let her in,” but “once she was 15 feet inside she starts to curse at the guards again, explaining who she was, that she’s on Rihanna’s album.”

When security approached, Banks allegedly, “spit in the [female bouncer’s] face,” a spy said. As they escorted her out, “she bites the [female guard] in the breast, almost breaking her shirt . . . as they took her out.” A police source added the bite “caused swelling and redness.”

Outside, Banks weirdly declared, “I’m gonna call the cops!” a source said, and approached an NYPD Traffic Enforcement car. But the source said that when she returned to the front of the club with the cops, she “punched” the female bouncer and was taken away as she asked, “Why are you arresting me?” Her reps did not take our call. Sources said the bitten bouncer declined medical attention at the scene.

[From Page Six]

This sounds horrific. I’m laughing/SMH at “15 feet inside she starts to curse at the guards again, explaining who she was, that she’s on Rihanna’s album.” Gurl, no. Rihanna doesn’t want any part of your stupid drama. She doesn’t want you to drop her name to get into the VIP. The delusion of fame is one thing – and that alone is Lohan-esque – but it’s quite another to go from “I want to get into the VIP” to “boob-biting and face-punching” in a matter of seconds. I really hope Banks goes to jail. Maybe that will sort her out.

Sounds like she a) needs an anger management class and b) needs to learn how to act. Like how you act on the block around everyone you grew up with is not how you act in public. Time to grow up.

    • JenniferJustice says:

Sounds like she needs to do some time and be held accountable for her actions. You hit, bite, spit, kick, or in any way touch another person in anger or have any of your excrements touch a person, your a$$ should be in jail.

I also hope Rihanna puts her in her place and whomever their label is (JayZ?) drops her. But in their world, her actions are probably considered PR hype and will boost sales.

      • vauvert says:

In what universe would a “normal”, non celeb get away with this behaviour without jail time and fines? There is no excuse for this. I don’t care of your childhood was bad, if you dark or whatever. Nothing gives you the right to assault a person, whose only fault was doing her job. I hope the bouncer presses charges, I hope the record label drops her and that she gets to do time in jail. This is outrageous.

    • BossyKat says:

Anger management, and some form of meds to go with. Weird thing is, she wasn’t angry about not getting in VIP, they never said she couldn’t get in, just that she needed the stamp -she was angry about having to go get a stamp. That’s when she threw a fit. The club owner should have escorted her inside.

    • Pandy says:

She needs medication and an attitude adjustment! Good for gossip though lol.

  2. Size Does Matter says:

    What an entitled brat.

    • Jwoolman says:

If she was sober- this is way beyond brat. She needs a thorough physical and psychological evaluation. Something really is not right with her. Hope it’s treatable.

  3. aims says:

I don’t know a lot about her, and the little I do hear is from here. Isn’t the general feeling is that she’s verbally abusive and an overall pain in the ass? Either way,it’s totally unacceptable for violence against anyone.

  4. OSTONE says:

I don’t care how much of a “social truther” she is on Twitter. She still is an asshole and deserves to be put away for a long time or for someone to put her on her place. Can’t stand people like that.

  5. Sayrah says:

I really despise this person. I was horrified by her behavior on the airplane and this is worse. She needs to be on medication and away from society for awhile.

  6. Lama Bean says:

Lol. Usually someone says “I have a top selling album”. Better yet, if it’s top selling, they don’t have to say anything at all. They ARE the VIP section. “I’m on Rihanna’s album” is like saying “my second cousin is the sound engineer for Rihanna on tour”.

  7. Wentworth Miller says:

Still no good music just more headlines about your bad behavior, huh, Azealia.

  8. Santia says:

WHO DOES THAT???? Azalea needs a serious time out (preferably away from the limelight).

    • Jenna says:

Someone who is going to seriously get her ass handed back to her one day, and then all hell is gonna break loose. I’ve worked security AND had that particular injury happen (to be fair, I’m a EE, they are kinda out and about in sadly dangerous range – After I was bitten, I now almost always wear at least a leather vest or even a really heavy duty full coverage corset for protection if I get a gig.) and the pain was worse then when I took a hit that broke my collarbone and 6 ribs. And I’ll confess, I went from doing my best to calm the situation down using reason and quiet persuasion to the next second dropping my attacker to the ground, hard. And only managed to refrain from kicking the unconscious body in front of me a few times by the skin of my teeth. She is so freaking entitled, whips out that ‘do you know who I am’ crap all the time while justifying her bad behavior as ‘truth’ and proof she is constantly being kept down by the establishment and only by incredible luck has she not been seriously hurt. A man WOULD have been absolutely beaten sideways by now – only because she IS a she and folks often hesitate to punch a woman, even to protect themselves has kept it from happening already. I don’t want her to get herself killed, but at the rate she is going, I’m actually a bit afraid for her. She’ll go after the wrong person who has a similar rage issue and it’s going to be bad. Woman needs to sit down and get herself pulled back into order while her biggest concern is still just getting dropped from work and losing fans and not dropped out of a window or losing her life.

  9. Mimz says:

Girlfriend has serious issues. When there are posts about her I rarely comment because I have issues with … everything that involves her.
To me, she has some sort of mental issue, she mentions very casually her horrible childhood experiences and how she sleeps with much older men for money (?), and every time i read a new article about her sexual history or the violence in her home, I think to myself “oh that explains all of this”. She is one angry child, to me, and I don’t have a lot of hope for her. She might say something right every once in a while, but she’s a homophobic, spoiled, entitled Mess.

I feel sorry for her, and I hope she can get some much needed help.

ANd BTW, namedropping is tacky. Remember when Iggy namedropped Beyoncé “I’m going to be opening her tour” and was axed 5 seconds later? Yeah.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Same with how Azealia name dropped working with Gaga and got dropped from that too.

Agree on her past, she truly has one of those bios that’s genuinely horrifying and the fact she’s so calm about it tells me how prolonged her abuse was

    • Lea says:

That’s how I feel too. I can’t imagine anyone growing up to be a mentally stable person with her upbringing and abuse suffered. I just wish she got some help by anyone in her team.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree, Mimz. She has issues more significant than wanting attention or feeling entitled. I worry that she may harm herself or someone else, and I think she needs help. I understand people saying her behavior is unacceptable, and it is, but it’s so extreme I think there’s something major going on inside there.

  10. Kitty says:

I don’t hate her, but I don’t think she’s amazing either. I think she’s young, hot-headed and probably slightly unhinged for a myriad of reasons. Violence is never acceptable, but she’s still no worse than some of these other starlets out here in terms of the self entitlement and the taking of oneself too seriously.

    • Jay says:

Uhhh…. she’s way worse than the vast majority of other starlets. There have been MANY instances of her spewing homophobic crap. I also love how her awful comments about white people get swept under the rug, because apparently being prejudiced against whitie is A-okay. She’s an immature, disrespectful twat.

  11. kri says:

Damn! If someone bit me, I would flip. I work in a hospital, and one of the things that freaks out all of us the most is a human bite injury. It’s relly awful. I know it says the guard’s skin was not broken, but still. UGH. WTF is wrong with her? She sounds like she has serious issues, maybe mentally unbalanced. I hope she gets some help, but this bullsh!t has to stop.

  12. teacakes says:

Seriously, she needs to go away and sort herself out. And take anger management classes while she’s at it. And reflect on what kind of person she’s become.

I can’t believe she pissed away her career on bloody Twitter. TWITTER!!

  13. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Uh? Not sure why my previous comment was zapped.

I just said she’s mentally ill and she’s in danger of really getting hurt because of her uncontrollable behavior.

  14. ET says:

    She’s bipolar… End of story

    • H says:

Speaking as someone who is bipolar…no, she’s not. I’ve never bit, hit or spit on anyone. I’d say she has anger management issues, maybe she even has some anti-social personality traits is the more likely diagnosis.

      • Miss Grace Jones says:

Uh. You realize bipolar varies with some people so while you may not be violent othersmmost definitely can be. Me and my father both have it and this sounds exactly like one of his manic rage induced episodes-sudden, violent, and seemingly over nothing. Meanwhike my bipolar mostly manifests itself as depressive lethargic episodes, repetitive thinking and occasionally manic episodes that result in overspending and risk taking but is more easily handled with one of the lower doses of seroquel. I get wanting to end stigma towards mentally ill but denying that there are more negative symptoms in them that include violence in some cases does nothing to help either. None of these episodes Azealia has sounds like someone mentally stable and denying her that especially in lieu of her abusive past is probably exactly why she hasn’t gotten any psychiatric help now. It’s gotten past the point of a celebrity just acting out and genuinely sounds frightening.

    • Lille says:

That is what I think too. With all of these things occurring within a f months of each other, I would say she is definitely on a downswing.
I have heard she suffered some major abuse, and it is not uncommon for people in that situation to grow up to be bipolar.
She does have talent, but it needs to be channeled more productively. She is very pretty too, and could be a mega star if she could manage this stuff a bit more.

    • paranormalgirl says:

She doesn’t present as bi-polar to me.

    • BossyKat says:

      @ET

Yes, I think she’s bipolar too.

Regarding @H – bipolarism can present in different people, different ways.

There was a woman manager at my last company who had a tendency (before her diagnosis/treatment for bipolarism) to fly off the handle for little to no provocation, and she also roughly pushed them into conference rooms and put hands on them when having her one on ones. Made a few women cry she could get so nasty and scary.

Not saying all bipolar people are aggressive and violent, but that *can* be a symptom.

    • paranormalgirl says:

She presents as more antisocial or borderline personality disorder than bipolar, if I were to hazard an off the cuff armchair diagnose without treating her, which I’m not fond of doing. But hey, what do I know, only went through 12 years of schooling and training and over 20 years of practice in the field.

    • PennyLane says:

I’ve known borderlines and I’ve been married to someone with bipolar disorder, and quite frankly this sounds like borderline personality disorder to me. The tendency to resort to physical violence combined with superficial charm with nothing nice underneath are hallmarks of someone with borderline personality disorder.

People who are bipolar can often have good qualities that get lost in the ups-and-downs of their illness, but that goodness is still there somewhere inside them! Big difference.

      • jc126 says:

Yes, from this article, it does remind me of a very few HORRIBLE people I’ve known with borderline personality disorder (most I’ve met aren’t remotely in the ballpark). But, I believe that some people are simply amoral a-holes who don’t care about others, they were raised that way, without having an Axis II diagnosis specifically.
I wish some of the people she’s attacked would sue her, at the least. I also still believe the people who are expressing sympathy for her, as opposed to her victims, would change their tune if they were assaulted by someone.

  15. Mina says:

    I like her.

    • Sarah B says:

I, too, like violent, homophobic, racial slur slinging, spitters…

    • coolkidsneverhavethetime says:

I think she’s way out of line and totally unhinged but I think it’s unfair to trash her when she clearly has some adjustment issues and she calls out the gay community for misogyny. She has a lot of anger directed toward cis gay men, true, but I can see how tokenizing women’s bodies and reducing them to nasty one liners could be offensive to some women. She herself is bi. So I don’t think it’s homophobia so much as mostly misdirected and overstated but maybe sometimes valid anger toward gay men for things like calling each other “fishy” based on how feminine they look, playing the “snatch game”, making horrific and demeaning jokes on TV about women’s vaginas and menstruation. Why do we give them a pass? Because they’re gay? I’m sorry but if she’s one of the few people in the spotlight calling out this brand of woman bashing that is seen as acceptable and comical coming from the gay community, I can’t hate her completely.

  16. JenniferJustice says:

Why the sympathetic “she needs help” or “she needs medication” attitude? She’s just a horrible person who keeps getting away with physicallly assaulting people. I’d be willing to bet if she did some hard time for it, she would stop. This woman does not need help or medicine. What she needs is to be held responsible like any other adult and pay the frickin’ consequences.

    • Lea says:

Because she has had a terrible upbringing and suffered abuse in a dynsfunctional family, there are many interviews about it around. Some people suffer abuse but still manage to become functional adults, I feel like Azealia didn’t manage to and never got any help.

      • Lex says:

You can’t make excuses for people who repeatedly assault others. Do you excuse Chris Brown too?
What about all the rapists out there, the wife bashers/murderers, the child molesters? It doesn’t matter if someone was assaulted, molested, had a bad time etc as a kid. You don’t get to do whatever you want as an adult with no consequences.

This person is a vile, physically abusive, homophobic racist. She deserves no fame, no attention, no money from said ‘fame’. She deserves to be punished and needs to repay her debt to society. And perhaps attend a few seminars on “NOT BEING A HOMOPHOBIC RACIST ASSAULT FIEND.”

      • renee28 says:

There are plenty of people who had horrible, abusive childhoods. At some point you have to be held accountable. Get therapy, get drugs, get a life coach…do something. A rough childhood isn’t a permanent excuse to constantly have violent outbursts.

      • jc126 says:

She’s an adult, and should’ve learned by now not to BITE people, at the least. I work with the mentally ill, and many of them have suffered unspeakable trauma and abuse as children and during adulthood, yet they don’t violently assault others.
And I suspect the people who are sympathizing with her haven’t been BITTEN by an adult, it’s a scumbag move to bite someone.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Because some people actually know and have read about her childhood. Kinda easy to be sympathetic when you know what’s going on with her. She’s a classic abuse and mental illness victim.

      • JenniferJustice says:

Balogna!! I know she had a rough childhood. LOTS of people have had a rough childhood. That is no excuse and it seems more on this thread would like to make excuses for her rather than see her punished/disciplined as any regular person would be. She doesn’t get a pass for having a bad childhood. Along that line of thinking, why should she get help or stop being a violent thug? She doesn’t get in trouble for it – in fact she gets sympathy? What’s going to happen when she has a child of her own?

I also don’t understand why it’s up to the victims of her assaults to press charges. I thought the police press charges regardless of the victims’ desire to or not. What gives?

    • Original T.C. says:

Because locking up mentally ill people in prison has never shown to help. It protects society from then while in prison but they receive no mental health treatment or anger management.

I agree that she should be held accountable for her actions against the security guard by paying her for bodily harm but she should be forced to enter a 30 day in-patient mental health facility or at least be placed on a 51/50 so she can undergo psychiatric evaluation and start medical treatment. Her behavior is obviously abnormal. I suspect untreated bipolar disease and possible borderline personality disorder.

P.S. She herself is bisexual and many of her fans are gay, additionally she dates White men. I think she engages in self hatred. She doesn’t only say bad things about Whites but also her own race. She is lashing out at everyone.

      • Pandy says:

She needs a stay in a forensic unit in a mental health hospital. She could be found NCR (Not Criminally Responsible) so that she serves her sentence in a hospital, where she can be treated, rather than a jail.

      • JenniferJustice says:

But you’re assuming she is mentally ill. I haven’t seen any proof of that. The only things re her being mentall ill I have seen are sympathetic people who think she is mentally ill. Why does she get this presumption of illness? She is a rager. A violent rager. I’ve seen alot of people who were abused as kids who end up being abusive themselves. It isn’t mental illness. It’s continuing a pattern they learned and a lack of coping skills they never learned. That’s not mental illness. That’s a person with a hair trigger temper and violent tendancies. Until I see documentation or some admission of mental illness, I’m not buyiing it. In fact I just Googled to see if there was somethiing out there you all have seen that I haven’t in the way of documented mental illness and there is nothing. All that came up were articles about her claiming “whiteness may be a mental illness.” She isn’t sick. She’s just a mean bitter hater.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Well said Original, obviously she needs to be handled in some way. This isn’t healthy or normal, but just saying “She’s a hating brat.” is simplifying the situation by half.

Saying, “Well some people who had a (SEVERELY) abusive childhood don’t become jerks like her.” doesn’t really address what to do with the members of the population who do. In the real world abuse and neglect often produces negative effects, if it didn’t then poverty and mental illness wouldn’t be so closely tied to both.

      • Original T.C. says:

        @Jennifer Justice,
My reason for saying she has a type of untreated mental illness is that although Celebitchy only puts up a few of her posts, many Black sites follow her regularly. One day she is posting sweetness and sugar, the next day hatrd at something. Then some times she goes on a pressured posting spree. She will go on a White people rant one day then talk about how great White men are in relationships and how Black men are losers.

Her moods are just not normal, if you follow her and have had family members with mental illness you start picking up on the “tells”. She did a radio interview that is also streamed on video and she just worked herself into a crying fit. She is like 5foot nothing and weighs 100IBs but talks about how she can take on any man.

Traditionally mental illness has been seen as a taboo in the Black community and authority figures such as teachers miss it in Black kiddo and simply punish them for bad behavior. A similar behavior in a White girl would have them sent to the school nurse or have a parent-teacher meeting. So there is a high chance she never got help.

Again, not excusing her behavior, she needs to face consequences. Also to the person that brought up their names: Charlie Sheen, Chris Brown etc. did worse and didn’t have to go to jail for the particular crime. Community service.

  17. Melody says:

That awkward moment when you think you’re Naomi Campbell but the public has forgotten your 15 minutes and you aren’t dating a billionaire.

  18. jean says:

Seems she has gotten away with hitting people in the past — I know I’ve read about her doing this before. She must think that this is acceptable behavior. Glad she is being held responsible now. Going forward, she may want to grow up.

  19. Jem says:

Drugs and/or mental illness. She’s beautiful and talented and I hope she gets help.

  20. eggy weggs says:

She needs to check in with Foxy Brown and see just where this kind of behavior will get you.

  21. Paris says:

This woman is completely out of control, and dangerous as well. She will end up dead, or in jail, or she’ll kill someone else. She needs mental help and quickly.

  22. GoldenHouseSouth says:

I really think she’s a talented musician, performer, composer, singer, rapper, etc. In my opinion at this late stage she is clearly suffering from mental illness.

  23. tacos and tv says:

This girl (yes, girl) is vile, rude, obnoxious, inconsiderate, annoying, hypocritical and just the worst. Please stop covering her antics. She is not nice and is violent. I really can’t with her. I don’t like anything about her. She goes around attacking people, throwing around offensive comments and words like nothing but then wants to attack other people?! Ugh. What a waste.

  24. Cynthia says:

Is really so sad because she is so talented.

  25. Aenna says:

It does seem like a borderline personality disorder . Unfortunately with out treatment , drugs therapy the works, she will probably continue her violent aggressive behaviour .
My late Mother had BPD , she would be fine sometimes but then she would jump out of a car or
hit , kick, and or scratch some one ,anyone that got in her way.
Its a dangerous disorder not only to the person suffering with it, but for anyone involved
    with said persons life.
Unfortunately she probably wont get help until she’s forced to after becoming violent with another yet person in her general vicinity .

  26. Bread and Circuses says:

I feel so bad for her, because she is SO smart, and talented, and beautiful, and perceptive, but she’s also her own worst enemy.

She’s a monster, but I’m still pulling for her–I want her to get it together.

I also want her victims to never have been victimized in the first place!

  27. Veronica says:

I don’t want her to go to jail because, frankly, white celebrities (and non- celebs for that matter) get away with far worse. Beyond that, jail doesn’t scare anyone straight, just damages them more.

She does need to get her shit together, though. Shitty childhood or not, you can’t expect the world to work around you. Part of being an adult is acknowledging the parts of yourself you need to work on and getting help.

  28. Debutante says:

Sounds like she needs to go to a nice mental facility for a long while . Stupid twat.

  29. fiona says:

Damn. I really enjoy her music – lyrics not so much but love that 90’s trance/hip hop aesthetic she’s got going on. There’s nobody else like her, she could have been bigger if she didn’t keep screwing it up for herself. Poor girl has serious anger issues, I feel for her…And the people she abuses.

  30. Marianne says:

I doubt jail time would work. If anything I bet it would just fuel her fire more. If anything she needs some court ordered therapy/anger management classes.
