I am STOKED. I will just let the force awaken me.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Just putting this as early in the thread as possible–BE WARY IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY SEEN STAR WARS! There are definite spoilers further along this thread, and they are NOT all tagged or warned of in advance.

  2. mimif says:

Paging QQ, you must share what your friend J had to say about the line up waiting for Star Wars….

    • QQ says:

bwahhahahah How If all the theaters caught fire at the same time last night all the sexy cool people in the world would be the only ones left? like the next generation will be so sexy ( he said this as we both were sending each other dispatches from our respective lines no less LMMFAO)

P.S. J and Narnia BF Liked but felt it wasn’t “nostalgic ” enough, you KNOW how I hate that term even, Me? i LOVED it, It course corrected a lot of shit I LOATHE about these movies and i didnt struggle falling asleep like i did with all the other ones ( even though i was high and the other ones i wasn’t just bored) , plus I could follow the plot

  3. Mia4s says:

No spoilers, but thank the maker it is good! Faults? Sure. But it had more humour and heart in the first half hour than in all three prequels.

Oh and my Oscar Isaac obsession is 100000000000X worse! 😉

    • MP says:

I just got home from seeing it and my facebook status currently reads: Thank the maker it was actually good!
So, so happy! I was so afraid to get my hopes up but it delivered big time.

      • Jenna says:

Yup – far better then I dared hope. And even more of a relief, it was good enough I didn’t have to listen to my Star Wars fanatic husband (I enjoy SW. HE made lightsabers – combat capable – for the groomsmen in our wedding, had us walk into the reception to the Emperior March under a lightsaber arch, and has a full battle on the dancefloor. The man is nuts. Wonderfully so. But still nuts.) rant on the way home after as I feared. He enjoyed it and I breathed easier. Plot holes, yeah. A massive “no, not that!” Moment. But overall? Pretty dang good.

    • V4Real says:

I saw it, loved it. Would like to hear what people on C/B thought about their darling Lupita’s performance.

    • Dangles says:

      An Oscar for Oscar?

    • Kasia says:

I liked it but I didn’t love it. Too many forced references to the old films. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were terrific. But the plot disappointed me a bit. Yet another Death Star? Yet another Darth Vader? Carrie Fisher was also disappointing. She was more focused on keeping her permanent duckface than on acting. Gosh, I am so mean. Sorry.

      • xpreson says:

No you are not Kasia, I’m with you on the plot… this felt like a remake of A New Hope. Yet another cute droid that has something important to be delivered to the resistance. Yet another canteen scene… I mean I wouldn’t mind a couple of winks to the past but a more original plot would have made this movie amazing.

      • tracking says:

Kasia, I was so so disappointed in Carrie Fisher’s performance. Godawful, and she was the one I was most eager to see.

    • Anne tommy says:

I saw it this evening and was a little underwhelmed. It was entertaining and it was good to see the old gang back, but I didn’t share the views of those who found it a very emotional experience. Very cute new droid though.

  4. Anguishedcorn says:

    That review is spot-on.

  5. Elisa the I. says:

Meh. Stars Wars super-fandom is one of the things I will never understand.

    • AtlLady says:

Spoiler Alert for The Big Bang Theory:

One of the funniest parts of last night’s The Big Bang Theory was Wil Wheaton showing up for the Star Wars movie dressed in a Spock Star Trek uniform complete with ears and getting booed by the other folks in the theater. Wil’s explanation of the costume was he was on Star Trek and was representing the home team. His response to the heckling? “Live Long and Suck It!” This needs to be on a tee shirt ASAP.

  6. Tiffany27 says:

Y’all I’m developing a huge crush on Jon Boyega.

    • Mom2two says:

Oscar is attractive but John Boyega >>>Oscar Issac for me.

    • QQ says:

he has the looks and charisma of a young Sydney Poitier Like .. so ADORABLE

      • Tiffany says:

        Dead on comparison, QQ.

Going at 6:15, doo da, doo da, oh the doo da day.

      • Trillion says:

QQ that’s IT! He had so much chemistry with everyone he interacted with. Perfect casting. Perfect. He made the movie for me. (although there is a LOT to love here). I kept looking over at my husband and 7 y.o. son throughout the film and caught my husband with tears in his eyes at several moments. My son was riveted. The woman who played Rey was excellent but I was sometimes distracted by her Keira Knightly mouth-weirdness. Anyone else notice that?

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Trillion: THANK YOU for saying that. I thought I was the only one. She’s like a tuff girl version of Kiera–meaning she certainly doesn’t look fragile. I actually really like KK, but it is going to distract me in future showings. The first time I was too taken up in the joy and wonder to do more than note it for consideration after the movie.

      • Bridget says:

Trillion: I caught that too! I spent the entire movie thinking “why did they hire a Kiera Knightly clone?” – because the same voice, way of speaking, even the underbite!

      • Cocao says:

Hey, Daisy R is nowhere as annoying as KK, who pouts and clenches her jaw in every role. Insulting comparison for DR, who’s much better at acting than KK anyway.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Daisy totally reminded me of Keira with her voice, her accent and her mouth in particular.

  7. zan says:

Joyeux Noël from Montréal!! Thanks Celebitchy Crew 🙂

  8. Norman Bates's Mother says:

After all this hype I’m now tempted to go see it in the cinema, but I’ve never watched a Star Wars movie in my life (even though I love sci-fi). So I have 2 questions for those who have already seen it:

    – Do I have to watch all the previous ones first to be able to enjoy and understand this one?

    – Less importantly, but I’m curious – (without spoilers) how much screen time do Oscar Issac and Domhnall Gleeson have? From the promotional side of things it seems that Oscar is more of a supporting actor while Domhnall is basically an extended cameo?

    • MonicaQ says:

      1) There’s a lot of “homage” and “call backs” but it’s very much the first Star Wars (Episode IV) remixed. You’ll be fine if you go. They lay out the relationships very early on.

      2) Um…let’s go with “larger cameo”. Like they’re important but um…you sense there is more coming since this is a trilogy.

AND IF YOU ARE A MUSIC NERD JOHN WILLIAMS IS AMAZING. I got goosebumps. Literal shivers. Two parts nostalgia, two parts band nerd, seven parts “chord progressions can make me cry this isn’t Schindler’s List stop it”.

      • word says:

Oh God this is a trilogy? So we have to go through this heavy promotion 2 more times?!!! I watched Star Wars as a kid and all, but the hype for this movie is ridiculous. It’s been going on for 2 years. How could you not walk away from this movie disappointed as the hype has been so explosive that it can’t possibly live up to the expectations. On the other hand, Star Wars fans are so die hard, that they will say it’s “the best movie of all time” even if it isn’t.

      • MonicaQ says:

@word, I’m more Star Trek fan (and loathe JJ Abrams for what he did even though I am in the minority) but am OK with Star Wars, not too die hard. It wasn’t the best movie of all time but it was not too bad. I think since the Prequels were so bad, anything would be great in comparison.

I also don’t think the promotion will be as bad (or no more as bad as say, Avengers) for the next two. Well I should say the next one. Episode 9 will be “THIS IS THE LAST STAR WARS EVER—until we redo it again because we like money–BUY STAR WARS TAMPONS!”

      • word says:

Hahaha @ buy Star Wars tampons. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens. They bloody have Star Wars EVERYTHING right now. It’s annoying.

      • Larelyn says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE JW INFO!!!

        (band nerd… i can’t help myself… i seriously have a john williams problem)

      • Ankhel says:

        @ Monicaq

Oh man, they ARE going to make Star Wars tampons, aren’t they? Printed like little figures, so you can collect them. R2-D2, obviously, and an Ewok or two. Darth Vader. Jabba the Hutt, for extra absorption. Thanks, Disney!

      • Norman Bates's Mother says:

Thank you MonicaQ! In fact – I am a music nerd. It made me wanna see it even more. There’s nothing better than hearing a great score through those big speakers. I still regret not seeing Mad Max in cinema. Everyone says how great the score was and I barely even registered it while watching on my laptop.

      • NUTBALLS says:

MonicaQ, you weren’t the only John Williams nerd. The score was incredible.

    • Josefina says:

If you watched the previous ones, you’ll understand the story from the get-go and some jokes will probably be funnier. But nah, watching the previous ones is not necessary at all. I’m not a die-hard fan myself, either. I’ve never actually sat down and watched a Star Wars film, but my bf is a massive fan and invited me.

I definitely recommend it. It was so much fun. And for those who were wondering – Daisy Ridley is a lot better than what the trailer showed. She’s no Bette Davis but she played her part well enough.

  9. lucy2 says:

I’m not going to see it until next week, hoping to see Brooklyn this weekend instead. I’m so worried someone is going to spoil Star Wars for me! I should probably stay off the interwebs…

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot does look good, nice to see Tina in a semi-dramatic role too. Disappointed in the casting of the 2 main Afghani characters though.

    Office party tonight, wohoo!

  10. Elle says:

Not gonna lie.. I totally wished Courtney Cox and Matthew Perry was happening..

  11. InvaderTak says:

Ok, I admit it I intentionally read spoilers. I’ll still see it but I’m not thrilled.

  12. Tiffany :) says:

The Steven Fernandez thing is really troubling. He’s only 15, I am confused how he can be arrested for being with a 12 year old. I heard only a brief mention that he was in the car with two adults and then the 12 year old had some kind of encounter with the older men. If this is true…it would seem that the 15 year old is also being manipulated by the adults, and a victim himself? It seems like he was being used as bait to get children back to the true criminals, the adults.

    • Colette says:

You are assuming ,it wasn’t HIS idea to use his celebrity to get a girl for his ” boys”.If he recruited the older guys to help him rob a man ,all three would be charged with the robbery.

  13. Samtha says:

I saw it last night…and I pretty much hated it. Too much ripping off of story lines from 4, 5, and 6, without the heart. Plus…[mild, nonspecific spoilers below]

I really wanted a reunion scene (at least one) with the original cast, and that’ll probably never happen now.

    • sunglasses aready says:

Saw it this morning – brilliant! John and Daisy future stars. Domhnall is my new (in my mind) boyfriend.

    • msd says:

Samtha – sigh, yes. I liked it a bit more than you, or at least was entertained by it most of the time, but that’s very JJ Abrams to my mind. He ‘does Spielberg’ (see Super 8) or he ‘does Lucas’ (The Force Awakens). You end up with movies where the surface is basically right but under the surface there isn’t much there because it’s essentially a facsimile.

      • tracking says:

I completely agree, not bad, but very surface compared to the original trilogy in both characterizations and writing. I enjoyed it, and am interested to see how it develops going forward, but other than that one big spoiler scene, was less emotionally involved than I expected.

  14. Pablo says:

Pleasently surprised with Daisy Ridley. She was fantastic and judging by the trailers I was expecting someone very bland.

    She can be a star.

    • MP says:

Agreed. I was very pleasantly surprised. Although I think they all did a great job. J.J. did well with the casting.
      VERY MILD SPOILER AHEAD

It’s funny though how GC and LN have been very visible in the promotional tour and yet they had two of the smallest roles. Maybe they will be more visible in the next parts.

    • Bridget says:

She was good in the movie, but of course she can be a star – she’s a carbon copy of Keira Knightly. Down to the underbite.

  15. Amelie says:

I loved it but then I avoided all reviews except for one so my expectations were not too high or low. I was unfortunately spoiled for a major plot point by an idiotic trolly comment on Twitter which I tried to ignore but ended up being true… Oh well. I had one coworker who absolutely hated it because he thought it was just a rehash of New Hope. I haven’t seen the original trilogy in a long time but even I saw the multiple parallels between both movies. In the end though, all Star Wars stories are the same–battle between good and evil, the Force, lightsaber duels, weird character names, awkward romantic storylines (it never did romance well), and interesting hairstyles sported by the female characters… But I loved it and it’s what the fans wanted–a return to the feel of the original trilogy.

    • msd says:

      No spoilers from me …

I didn’t hate it, I quite enjoyed it but it was definitely a rehash of the very first one. A semi remake really. It’s like the opposite of George Miller deliberately destroying Mad Max’s car in Fury Road and then going off in a new direction. Way too many similarities, which got a bit tiresome after a while. I liked the first half a lot more than the second ie. before they kept bringing back old stuff over and over again. I think they were trying so hard to undo the prequels and to show everyone that the ‘old Star Wars’ was back that they wound up not doing, or trusting, enough new material. That may change in the next one now that they’ve got the excessive homage out of the way. People who’ve never seen any SW may actually be able to enjoy this one more as it won’t all feel so familiar. Anyway, it’s a lot better than the awful first prequel and generally entertaining. Ridley and Boyega were both good but I thought Adam Driver was the standout. And I did love Chewie!

      • Anne tommy says:

I thought Adam Driver was miscast, and looked like an emo/ goth band member who had wandered onto the wrong set. Chewie did not look a day older though…

      • tracking says:

I agree that Adam Driver was miscast. (Mr. tracking: “he’s supposed to be THEIR son?!)

      • msd says:

See, I was interested each time Driver was on screen. They didn’t do a lot with him but he was one of the few characters with any complexity and you could see him trying to go beyond cardboard villain. (Unlike Gleeson, who I actually liked for totally different reasons – he’s so gleefully hammy in it!) Plus, unlike most of the other new characters he wasn’t such a rehash.

He was a bit emo though, I’ll give you that 🙂

It’s a pity Christie had so little to do. Poor old Brienne barely registered on my radar as a new villain.

    • Cocao says:

“awkward romantic storylines (it never did romance well)”

Space opera style romances and very corny. Let’s see how Finn and Rey go in the future sequels.

  16. Abigail says:

Have a great holiday season everyone!

  17. M says:

Saw it last night. Blew my mind! Han Solo had the best one liners and the supportive, intergeneraltional female dynamics are amazing. So great to see wise, thoughtful, powerful, multifaceted character development in multiple female roles!!!!

    • Nibbi says:

i agree. i m a fan of this movie because it was actual Star Wars with Girl Power and in that sense was very new.

  18. browniecakes says:

I accomplished my quest of seeing it three times this week, saw it the third time by Saturday sundown. The quest comes from falling in love with Luke Skywalker in 1977 while a guest at another girl’s 13th birthday party screening. Got my dad to take me again that night and again that week – three times. I attended Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this year and met people who’d flown in from as far as Austria. Love it or hate it, the fandom is huge. Obviously I was going to love the new movie anyway, but JJ Abrams made it easy.

  19. Cocao says:

Very good reboot with a fresh modern feel but much along the lines of the original trilogy than the latter prequels by G Lucas. Rey is basically LSkywalker again, even down to the desert home planet. The prequels were rushed, poorly structured, etc. JJ did a very good job and obviously got boundless help from cashed-up Disney. Daisy was very good and the focus on friendships (Finn and Po) made the film stronger. The critic who wrote that R2’s awakening at the end was an deus ex machina missed the point: Luke obviously preprogrammed the robot to wake when Daisy was close so she could come find him. She’s either his daughter or ward or some sort. The best thing about the prequels by GL was the lava fight scene between Darth and Obi. Please include something as good in the two final movies.

  20. LAK says:

    Merry Christmas!!! 🙂

  21. justme says:

I love Star Wars and am so glad to hear this one is a much better movie. Hope it continues to the other ones.

In other news can we get a Rock post….. so adorable with his new daughter!
