Film critics bash Sienna Miller’s mustache

Sienna Miller’s performance in The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is so bad, critics are making fun of her mustache. That is bad. New York Post film critic Lou Lemenick declared the film terrible, saying in his review “You know a movie’s got problem when the most memorable thing about it is Sienna Miller’s moustache…That growth above her lip is clearly visible in two scenes, once in profile.”

Not to defend Sienna, but it sounds like more of a lighting problem. But it speaks volumes about her performance that film critics were so utterly bored, they were pointing out lighting and grooming problems. The British papers have picked up on the criticism, and they’re basically declaring an end to Sienna’s career.

After a series of box office flops Sienna Miller’s career is badly in need of a hit.

But according to critics her latest film is so bad that most interesting thing in it is the star’s moustache.

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh opened in the U.S. this week to damning reviews.
New York post critic Lou Lemenick wrote: ‘You know a movie’s got problem when the most memorable thing about it is Sienna Miller’s moustache.’

‘That growth above her lip is clearly visible in two scenes, once in profile.’

The film, directed by Dodgeball’s Rawson Marshall Thurber, premiered at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in New York on Tuesday. Sienna, 27, attended the premiere alongside co-stars Peter Sarsgaard, Jon Foster, Nick Nolte and Mena Suvari.

It is a coming-of-age drama based on a novel by Michael Chabon, set against the backdrop of 1980s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The New York Times called the film ‘a clumsy and confused adaptation’ and said ‘just what accent Ms. Miller is attempting is hard to guess’.

Sienna did not endear herself to the American public when she described the city of Pittsburgh, where she was filming, as ‘S**tsburgh’ after being refused entry into a bar.

Angry residents hit back at the actress with a range of anti-Miller merchandise including T-shirts, aprons, mugs, pillows and coasters.

The novelty items are in the Pittsburgh colours of black, white and yellow – and showed a giant finger pointing Sienna in the direction of the UK, saying ‘Give Sienna The Finger. London’s That Way.’

Another range had ‘Team Pittsburgh Say Sienna Go Home’ emblazoned on them.

Sienna later apologised for her comment.

[From The Daily Mail]

Excuse me while I chuckle to myself. Sienna was never going to be the next Meryl Streep, but at one point she had a promising career. So what damaged it? Besides the badly-lit moustache, that is. Was it her party girl image – has Sienna become something like the British Tara Reid? Think about it – Tara Reid was once a promising, young, blonde actress too. Or did Sienna take a ricochet hit from the Jude Law-nannygate scandal? I actually doubt that one. Most likely, her career took the biggest hit when she took up with the married Balthazar Getty in such a public way. Or maybe it really is the moustache.

Here’s Sienna leaving Beach Blanket Babylon in London, and arriving home with a male friend on March 19th. Images thanks to WENN.com .

Yeah I agree, although I am not a fun of her’s (I have never seen any of her movies), I think it has become like an easy trend to jump onto the anti-Sienna Miller bandwagon, fueled even more so by her affair with Balthazar Getty. It is a shame, last year she was the ‘IT’ girl and now she is the butt of all jokes.

  2. Tommy says:

It’s not so much an anti-Sienna bandwagon as people starting to realize that this fluff and flash was all there ever was to her, and now they’re getting tired and bored with her now all this drama is getting old. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.

  3. bros says:

whatever-I still have the hugest girlcrush on her-she is fantastically pretty.

  4. Kiki says:

please, who cares about her films, just where did Sienna get her tuxedo blazer?

  5. j. ferber says:

I was just reading about the silent film “It” girl Clara Bow, who had a truly horrendous and traumatic childhood, and she too was universally despised in Hollywood for her wanton ways. I guess in Hollywood you can only do so much sleeping around (to give buzz to your career?) before people condemn you for it. Maybe it’s a fine line, but however fine, Sienna has clearly found it and stepped right over it. Obviously, a double standard exists, because there’s no such vehemence about males doing the same thing. I did hear she was good in the Warhol pic about Edie Sedgwick, but I’ve actually never seen her act.

  6. Granger says:

Seriously? You seriously think Tara Reid was once a promising young actress? Honestly, I can’t remember when.

  7. Codzilla says:

Maybe her career is suffering because she’s a shitty actress?

  8. FF says:

It’s not her party girl image – it’s her whiny sense of entitlement that beached her career – of which, what career? Her body of work is measly for all that we keep hearing about her.

Endless moaning about the paps, thinking she a fashionista when all she does is rip-off Kate Moss (who rips off Marianne Faithfull but that’s another story), the boinking her co-stars, then the Getty thing.

And then her films are always being hyped up to the wazoo with practically zero substance – while the selling point often seems to be that she’s appearing semi-naked in them – and her personality sucks. What’s there to like? So she’s got a great body? There are plenty of those to go around in Hollywood.

Unmemorable and easily recast with someone better, who the audience not only likes but can identify with. That seems to be about the size of her problem. Then add to that her moustache.

  9. kiki says:

she is not a bad actress, But she plays herself a woman whos selfcentered and F**K’s around on screen She was In Alfie with Jude Law who she ended up having a affair with I think the persona she played on screen a party girl who sleeps around is not far from who she really is. She also did a film with Steve Busemi (spelling) forgot name of where she played a actress who plays mindgames with Steves character

  10. Zoe (The Other One) says:

Mustachioed, husband stealing wh0re. I wonder when people will stop suggesting her ‘promising’ career is up and actually stop giving her work so we don’t ever have to see or hear from her again.

  11. sarah says:

It was the home-wrecking that did it. Before that, women really loved her. There was a look named after her “The Sienna” was boho-chic. Women don’t like seeing pictures of a topless chick kissing another woman’s husband… especially when that woman has 4 children at home. It’s over.

  12. HashBrowns says:

She’s a bad actress. The end. It’s like Megan Fox. She’ll do well for awhile and then slowly taper off because she just isn’t a good enough actress.

Sienna Miller is pretty much screwed though because she has no distinctive look. Angelina Jolie gets away with bad acting in some of her films because she has a distinct look. Jessica Alba: bad actress, distinct look. Jennifer Aniston: bad actress, distinct look. Scarlett Johanssen: bad, bad actress, very distinct look. Eva Mendes, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz. All fairly bad actresses, but they all look “weird” i.e. like no one else so they get away with it.

Sienna Miller has a boring, bland, completely forgettable face. And the only thing she’s really known for is her affairs and not her acting. She can’t do that if she thinks she’ll have a lasting career.

  13. Ned says:

It was the picture of her without a bra on a boat with Getty grabbing her.

That single picture made her look trashy and a home- wrecker.

I must be the only one, but I actually believe that it was Getty who made her think he was seperated from his wife.

When a couple is seperated, even before they go through the official divorce, it’s a different story that to be “the home wrecker”.

  14. Ned says:

and I actually believe the movie industry really needs some pretty faces with cute bodies.

Sorry, but more and more ugly or horsy looking women are being cast in the “cute/ pretty girl who steals your heart” roles.

Not to mention that I think Sienna is one of the prettiest British actresses ever.

    I feel bad for her.
A face like hers is deserving to be on the silver screen, not Jen Garner, Claire Danes, Anne Hathaway and the list goes on.

There used to be times when talented beauties graced the screen.
Now it’s all about unattractive women with a great PR agent.

  15. I thought she did a good job in Factory Girl but then I’m fascinated by the life & times of Andy Warhol so I’m prejudiced.

  16. Ggirl says:

I have seen some movies that I actually liked Sienna in: Alfie, Factorygirl and Interview with Steve Buscemi. I like her as an actress and I think that entire London crowd, Sadie Miller (Jude’s ex) and Kate Moss along with Balthazar Getty’s ex have had their jealous knives out for her for a while. Sienna is young and the old bats need to get off of her already. Ms. Jolie has done her own share of enticing allegedly committed men (BBT included) and some people want to nominate for sainthood because of her adoption fettish. All I am sayin is that eventually it all evens out.

  17. Bodhi says:

Exactly Codzilla. She is a shitty actress, nuff said

  18. LadyT says:

    Ggirl,

What the he!! has Balthazar’s WIFE done that indicates that her “jealous knives are out”? Are you really serious that she has no right to take any issue with Skanky Miller?

So Sienna’s young and everyone else just needs to get over it, huh? Well, you see, the thing about youth is it is the one thing that EVERYONE eventually loses. For some, it’s quicker (and I think Ms. Miller is falling into that group) And since she has no intelligence, skill, or talent, she is going to be in a world of hurt when that youth you’re blathering on about goes away. I will laugh my butt off when she ends up on UK’s Big Brother or living off of Daddy’s money.

  19. LadyT says:

BTW Ggirl Jude’s ex-wife is named Sadie FROST and she has actually spoken is Ms. Miller’s defense. Lord knows why. Probably for the press.

  20. Ggirl says:

Okay, okay. I am not an advocate of husband or boyfriend stealing. I wouldn’t want it done to me or anyone else. The London Daily Mail ran several stories about the “London set” having it out for Sienna because of Jude Law and Rhys Ifans. It seemed a lot like bullying. Then there were separate stories about Mr. Getty’s ex wife and her entire circle giving her hell also. So with youth comes foolish mistakes. But people seem to take it too far when they completely discount any talent she has. Jude Law’s career also took a little downturn after all of his messing about with the nanny while he was with Sienna. However, people in general didn’t downgrade his talent. It just seems that men get away with the cheating a little easier than women. Double standard. Didn’t mean to offend anyone or advocate cheating. It just seems people have been hard on Sienna.

  21. czarina says:

You don’t need to be Meryl Streep to have a decent career.
There are lots of pretty, adequate actresses (like Sienna Miller) who do quite well with rom-coms, light dramas, actions, etc.
The problem is that Sienna Miller has made herself SO unlikeable that it would take her giving a Streep-level performance to overcome her reputation.
On the other hand, I think Lemenick’s article was excessively nasty and that mustache thing was so catty and uncalled for that it made ME feel sorry for this woman!! (whom I otherwise don’t like).

  22. chutneycarnival says:

You all should watch her in the movie “Interview” with Steve Buscemi. I can’t decide if she was bad or good. I think her problem is not her acting so much as she’s just not memorable at all. It’s like she’s transparent. It’s easy to look right through her.

  23. yadira says:

When did this thread turn into a Angelina Jolie thing?

Let’s not forget that she was also wearing that stupid yaught hat when she was running around topless with a married man. Maybe it was the hat that made people dislike her? Or it may be the long stache she is carrying around?

  24. Pole says:

Ggirl, why should Jude Law’s talent be downgraded because of him cheating on Sienna?

Sienna’s talent isn’t being downgraded because of her affair(s). It’s being downgraded because it’s plain obvious by now that whatever talent she has, isn’t enough to make it on-screen. Her films tank and her private life has turned into a circus that steals away the attention. Add to that, that she always whines about her private life getting all the attention while catering the paps at the same time – this girl wants to be a celeb, not an actress and neither is working very well for her IMO.

  25. sheryl says:

Sienna’s hunger for tabloid attention is part of what has caused her to be overexposed. It’s her fault that the “Jude Law thing” was so overblown. It’s something that should have been kept private between the two of them because stuff like that, in all honesty, is really none of the world’s business. I mean, seriously, they weren’t married, but she paraded around trying to look like death warmed over for the paps every day…you don’t do that when you’re hurt, you don’t even want to be seen. So what she found there was a way to get exposure for herself in the way of sympathy. And she stayed with Jude on and off for many, many months until he finally had enough of her selfish ass. So the girl has done it to herself. She hasn’t been so much serious about acting as she has trying to become a celebrity.
And to whoever mentioned Interview, yes, I saw her in that on cable, and to me, she was obviously acting like someone very aware that a camera was on her. Overacting, actually.

  26. fern says:

What damaged SM career/image? Sienna Miller.

How can anyone forget about her:
Exagerrated sense of entitlement. No respect for other women or herself. Victim mentality. Someone else is always responsible for HER actions. Whines about not having privacy and then tips off the paps/invites them into her personal life. The total disregard or lack of consideration for RG and her 4 kids as she performed a world wide show-n-tell of her affair with BG. Plays same roles over and over, which just happen to be variations of herself. Hypocritical(ie-berated JL nanny for sleeping with her man and then slept with RG husband). Doesn’t think about the consequences of her actions BEFORE she does them. Mentality of a 12 yo. Doesn’t think before she speaks. No remorse. Blasting women for not honoring the sisterhood. She won’t LAY LOW or SHUT UP. Using JH as a cover for her affair with BG and using his illness to get her name and face in headlines. Pops up in LA or at LAX to let people know that she “won” instead of keeping the affair discreet. Underestimating the public’s intelligence. Using police escorts to draw attention to herself. Insulting other actors because she was dropped from a film (ie-called RC fat and old, and implying that CB got the part because she already look old). Parents who enable her bad behavior (ie-mother sitting on boat and in hotel room with her and BG). Popping up in LA immediately following reports that the married man was reconciling with his wife. Perpetuates the idea that being “pretty” or wearing “pretty” clothes makes her immune to the consequences of her actions. Staging 5 photo-ops in a row at LAX and JFK to give the impression that she was popular.

  27. fern says:

Sugarcoating the affair to make it appear that “love” justifies her actions with BG. Spreading lies (ie-they were separated, marriage was already in trouble, he was unhappy)about RG to justify her actions with her husband. Rubbing the affair in RG face by wearing BG’s watch and shorts to reveal the bruises on her leg. Won’t stop whining about what JL did to her.

  28. Lee says:

Would you say she was not acting in The Layer Cake? She was devastatingly alluring in that one. I certainly could not be bothered to notice whether she was acting or not in that one. Did anyone else?

  29. cirque says:

Vapid and an airhead during interviews. Her acting was called “vacant”. What made people turn away in disgust was the affair with Getty that publicly humiliated his wife and kids (and she continued the affair without any conscience and remained unapologetic) plus her need for staged media coverage (self-entitlement, police escorts???, little known acting award she made appear like a big deal??). She may have the looks now (she is trying to cling on to her youth but looks like she is in her 30’s) but her character and amoral behavior destroyed her credibility and thus she lost most of public’s respect.

  30. poopoo says:

She is just another narcissistic actress. Nothing more nothing less. I once read an account of her trying to get a photographers attention at a restaurant. And he was so determined not to give her his attention. She asked him the time. She parading up and down in front of him and he just ignored her. Her mother was with her. And mom couldn’t believe the guy wasn’t interested in her famous daughter. Me thinks mommy raised a narcissist. Her parents were very self indulgent when she was young and she glamorizes it and the selfish parental behavior. At any rate it is always nice when a narcissist doesn’t get narcissistic supply. She should adopt a child. We know many people get attention and supply that way. Make sure said child is from another country and very different looking.

  31. fern says:

SM should adopt a child? So she can create a miniature caricature of herself with an exaggerated sense of entitlement who thinks nothing of it when he/she steps on someone else’s back to achieve his/her “happiness”?

People see right through these “reinventing oneself by adopting a child” PR stunts, she would be regarded in the same sense as all those other celebs who think children are band-aides who possess the power to heal their careers/image. These are human beings, not fashion accessories.

  32. Bodhi says:

Layer Cake is an amazing movie, despite Sienna Miller, not because of her. There are hundreds of pretty sexy girls who could have turned in a job as good or better than Sienna’s.
