David Duchovy on X-Files: ‘I don’t want Mulder & Scully in couples’ therapy’

Fans of the supernatural, rejoice! 2016 marks the return of two beloved cult classic series, Twin Peaks on Showtime and The X-Files, returning to FOX on January 24, for a 6 episode event.

Once the original show ended its run in 2002, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprised their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully for the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe. After the film’s release, David told The Hollywood Reporter, “it didn’t seem that Fox was interested in doing another movie. I had figured, unless they turned around on that — which I really think they should have — that we were pretty much dead. And that was OK, because life goes on.”

Life definitely went on for the show’s stars. David, 55, went on to the Showtime series Californication and NBC’s Aquarius, which has been picked up for a second season. Gillian, radiant at 47, went on to play a psychiatrist on NBC’s Hannibal and got accolades for her portrayal of Blanche Du Bois in A Streetcar Named Desire on stage in London.

Sadly, the relationship between Fox and Dana is over, as discussed in an extended trailer for the series. In the video, writer-director-executive producer Glen Morgan says that the series will be a combination of stand-alone episodes and mythology-builders. “We knew the first and the sixth were mythology episodes and then the ones in the middle would be stand-alones that was really whatever Jim [Wong] and Darin [Morgan] and I came up with.” David added, “We want to satisfy the mythology of it, and then there’s going to be stand-alones and of those stand-alones there’s going to be one that’s funnier than the others.”

Even though Dana and Fox’s relationship didn’t last, the actors have been getting along famously while filming the new series – unlike the tense working relationship they had back in the 90s. According to David, “We’re good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show was our work together.” Gillian concurred, in a recent interview with New York Magazine, saying, “We’re probably closer today than we’ve ever been. It’s just the two of us that have had this particular unique experience. I don’t think that was necessarily important enough an element to draw us together [but] I think we’re old enough to realize that there’s value in our staying onside and supporting each other.”

That being said, David assures fans that the demise of the on-screen relationship is going to get in the way of the supernatural mystery. “We’re not bickering while we’re running with our guns out,” he says. “The relationship was never played [before this]. It was never … the predominant aspect of the show as written. It was something that was unspoken. I think it remains that way. I personally don’t want to [sic] Mulder and Scully sitting in couples’ therapy; that’s not what the show is. You can find that on other shows.”

The new series also stars Joel McHale (RIP, The Soup), Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani, Flight of the Conchords‘ Rhys Darby and William B. Davis, better known as “Smoking Man.” In casting news that is probably only exciting for me, D.J. Pierce, a/k/a/ Shangela from RuPaul’s Drag Race will make an appearance in an episode. Halleloo, indeed.

The X-Files returns with a 2-night event, with part one airing on January 24 and the second half airing the next night. Do you still believe?

Okay, I’ll say it. Gillian Anderson is still an exceptionally attractive woman…but dear Buddha, she needs to eat a hamburger, or two. That is all.

    I can’t wait!

I’m binge watching the original series now so I’ll be ready for this.

So glad this iconic series is returning, albeit for six episodes, which is bettah than none. Gillian and David have what is arguably the BEST on-screen chemistry on a television series, well, aside from Lucy and Desi, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore, and Mary and Valerie Harper.

A friend of mine saw the first 2016 episode at a sneak preview – he said it was awesome, and definitetly “old school” X Files. The rest of the audience loved it, too.

I’m not quite so sure Gillian and David’s ’90s working relationship was THAT tense…just go on Youtube and watch all the X Files seasons bloopers/outtakes, and you witness a LOT of laughter and love between these two.

    SO happy they reunited.

The most recent X-Files movie was pure shite, but with Rhys Darby and Joel McHale added to the cast, I have some hopes for this series. It’s just too bad Vince Gilligan wasn’t at the helm. I’m stating to think he was the real genius behind this show because Chis Carter has shown himself to be quite a hack. Am I wrong, or did the mythology part of the series never make any sense, really? Felt like it was made up as they went along …

    • BeeBee says:

I agree, the last X Files film sucked, big time. Don’t know what exactlly was going through Chris Carter’s mind when he greenlighted that atrocious script. Just do what I and other X Philes do…we have erased it from our memory banks….or….perhaps secret black ops Government forces at work erased them for us??? 😉

      • BeeBee says:

Yeah, the mythology part was most definitely made up as they went along. That said, it wasn’t a total loss for me (first five seasons) – some of it was pretty good.

I rewatched everything last year – including the 2nd movie, which I loathed, but I felt like I had to see the whole binge through. (Actually, watching the 2nd film again was kind of hilarious because I realized I didn’t remember half of it. My brain must have repressed the trauma). It was really clear that they had no idea where the conspiracy would head at the beginning of the show, but given the shaky start and the making it up as it goes, the conspiracy plot holds together reasonably well until the middle of the 6th season – then it’s off the rails.

As someone who never missed an episode when the series was originally on the air, I was really happy/relieved to see how well it holds up in general.

I’m excited for the show, but Joel McHale being on board does nothing for my confidence in it. It anything, it lowered it. I’ll still watch! I’m just afraid it’ll be like IWTB.

Does anyone remember that absolutely horrific, highly disturbing, yet weirdly captivating episode “Home”, about the inbred Peacock family of Pennsylvania…the sons impregnate their mother, who has no limbs, and lives under the bed and is literally wheeled out from under it whenever the family needs to reproduce? LOL! My brothers and I were traumatized after watching that one years back. Recently re-watched it on Blu Ray…it’s pretty damn sick, but a VERY well produced and acted episode.

  8. Ainda says:

I can’t wait… I’m such a 90 girl and I loved Mulder and Scully sooooo much! I never missed an episode. Ohh yes this creepy Home episode is burnt into my memory… Ughhh…
What made the series special was that unspoken love they had for each other. I really hope it’s like David said… It shouldn’t change…

So excited for this to happen!!!
