Rachel McAdams was one of the only women in a floral gown last night. During the pre-red carpet coverage on E!, Giuliana and Brad talked about the trends to expect and they mentioned florals but acknowledged that it was a risky choice. I think McAdams sort-of pulls this off, there’s something really cool about the gown’s pattern close up, it’s like an abstract floral and has these big splotches of color that approximate flowers and greenery. I wish she had done something different with her hair though. The style is perfectly fine but the highlights look cheap. Maybe they’re for a role. It’s not like she’s going back to True Detective though, that series was run into the ground. (She’s filming Doctor Strange now, with Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton.)
Also in Lanvin we have Julia Louis-Dreyfus in black strapless lace. She always seems to wear variations of this dress, but she knows what works for her and she’s not one to show off. Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for best performance by an actress in a comedy, which she’s won for the last four years in a row, for Veep. That award finally went to someone else, to newcomer Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Melissa Benoist, 27, of Supergirl was another celebrity who wore a print on the red carpet, she’s in Monique Lhuillier and I saw some negative reviews of this gown on Twitter. (Tom and Lorenzo questioned whether it looked like wrapping paper or a bed sheet.) I sort-of liked it. It’s different, it’s flattering and there’s something whimsical about it. (I think it’s the birds, I’m partial to prints with birds.) She is definitely one to watch. Melissa was there with her husband of 10 months, actor Blake Jenner of Glee, 23.
Also in Monique Lhuillier is Leslie Mann. Lhullier can be hit or miss (although when they get a gown right it can be amazing) and this falls flat for me. It’s the pepto pink color (I used that expression a lot but I have to credit The Fug Girls for reminding me of it on Twitter last night) and the fit is just off with that loose top and all the tulle around the skirt. Not cute.
Let’s end on a high note: Emmy Rossum in red formfitting Armani Prive. Holy crap this looks amazing. Emmy was kind of faltering in her red carpet style for a while, but she’s been bringing it lately and also wore Armani to the SAGs last year. Emmy is engaged to “Mr. Robot” creator, Sam Esmail, whose show won for Best TV Series: Drama. Ooh and I love her diamond wrap necklace. Jennifer Lopez had a similar necklace on last night and it was just to die for.

My favourites here are Melissa and Emmy, I don’t hate Rachel’s dress but I’ve seen her look way better.
I think the dress is lovely, actually but you’re spot on that she doesn’t look good in it – it’s the too severe top regions, especially the hair. Needed drop earrings and softer hair.
I like Rachel’s look mainly because it’s unique, nobody else had a dress like this. I have to admit that Emmy Rossum’s dress is fabulous though Emmy still makes me gag (I have to admire the dress from the distance) 😉
Completely agree on Melissa’s dress. It’s different, understated and very flattering on her body.

I loved Melissa’s dress. One of the evening’s best. I was disappointed in Julia Louis Dreyfuss choice of dress. She usually knocks it out of the park but this time she kind of looked drab.. very boring.

i love lanvin, and i like rachel’s dress, it looks different (i can only take so many dresses looking exactly the same). rooty blondes are popular atm, the problem is that her highlights look too chunky. but her hair is a lovely colour when she wears it down, so maybe they should have parted the do differently, so the super thick highlights wouldn’t be so obvious.
emmy rossum’s make up is appalling, that eyeliner is way too thick for round eyes. and her dress is boring.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks amazing, i want to look like her when i’m her age. the dress is a bit meh though. given how beautiful she is, she could experiment more.

Celebitchy and I are not in sync today – loved JLaw and did not like Rachel’s dress, at all. Emmy, however we agree, rocked it!
Hell no, Rachel can do so much better. Her dress looks like my grandma’s couch print. And that hairstyle is just awful, same the colour.

When I was young, we had “frosted” hair that they pulled through a cap and bleached. It always left about an inch around your face that didn’t get any color. I think Rachael McAdams is trying to bring back the look.

Yes! That’s what it looks like. I really like Rachel and I appreciate that she doesn’t constantly over emphasize how gorgeous she is and likes to experiment. But A LOT of her hair experimentation goes horribly wrong.
Rachel could have worn shrubbery last night and it would have been fine by me because she brought Sacha Pfeiffer, the Boston Globe reporter she portrayed in Spotlight, to the ceremony with her.

Emmy looked gorgeous. That dress fit her like a glove, and the color is beautiful. Julia always looks great. I love Rachel and thinks she’s so pretty. I actually love her dress, but the hair not so much. Maybe if it wasn’t sculpted so high?
I liked Rachel’s look. I like Melissa’s too, except why is the dress so bunchy looking at one of the hips? I don’t know why, but I’m not loving Emmy’s look as much as others seem to be. Something is just off for me. As for Leslie, I think if the top had been more fitted and then flowed out into that skirt, I could have appreciated it.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus didn’t win last year; Gina Rodriguez won for Jane the Virgin. JLD had won for years before that, but GR took it last year.

I really like Rachel’s dress! I agree that florals (especially a big print like that) can be hard to pull off, but she makes it work. And, while I can see what you’re saying about the highlights, I think it’s good that she kept her hair fairly simple and limited the makeup to red lip, it definitely keeps the dress from teetering over into the territory of “too much”.
Rachel doesn’t look good here and that’s disappointing becuase I think she is lovely in her own way, but that hair is totally bride of frankenstein and the color looks grey. She’s prettier than this. What happened?

Normally, I want to kill Rachel’s stylist for her. Rachel MUST have fired her. While I don’t love this, it’s a damn sight better than ANYTHING I’ve EVER seen on her. And kudos to whomever talked her out of that hideous 1 color, not-for-her bleached hair she’s had for so long. YIKES!
