Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen: one of the worst looks of the Globes?

You just don’t get it. YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND. Life is so serious. The world is dour. Nothing could ever make Rooney Mara smile. Nothing will ever be light and simple and fun. Even when Rooney Mara wears a terrible dress, she will not do it with wit and humor. No, it has to be the most seriously bad dress ever, super-serious and super-dour. Rooney wore this Alexander McQueen gown which, if I’m being honest, photographs a lot better than it moves. When she was in motion on the red carpet, this was easily one of the worst gowns of the Golden Globes. When you see it move, you can get a better idea of how the skirt of this gown looked like ratty toilet paper. I don’t understand why Rooney’s afraid of color – she almost always wears black, white or nude. She would look fantastic in a red or a blue. But then she might actually look like she’s having fun. And we couldn’t have that. No. Never.

Caitriona Balfe also wore Alexander McQueen. To me, this looks like an old-fashioned nightgown and robe ensemble, the kind that Joan Crawford would have worn in 1948. Still, Caitriona seemed to love it and she looked like she was actually enjoying herself, which goes a long way towards me liking the dress. I mean, it IS funny. She’s got tulle puffs on the hem. It’s crazy.

And here’s Amanda Peet in Alexander McQueen. Oh, honey, no. Ruffles on the bodice? NO. I feel like we might need to do an intervention for Amanda.

Caitriona is gorgeous!!! I think she makes that dress work…

  2. Ankhel says:

What is up with all the ugly vintage nightgowns? And somebody should sedate and collar the pack of feral chihuahuas that mauled poor Rooney. Girls should be safe in their own beds.

    • Ally8 says:

Yes! Such a weird trend. They all look washed out and sloppy in these nude sacks. I know the 90s are back, but Courtney Love’s disheveled nighties should not be on any designer’s inspo board.

  3. littlemissnaughty says:

I love Caitriona Balfe, that’s all I got. I’m ignoring the dress. And I actually like Amanda’s look? I’m no fan of ruffles but she looks good here. Rooney Mara … oy. I can’t with the shy and retiring flower routine. Girl, pull yourself together. You’re dragging me down.

    • Rachel says:

This is far from the worst dress Amanda has ever worn. For her, it’s a definite win.

      • QQ says:

I was about to say Myself!! Amanda Peet?!? theee amanda Peet that makes the Fug Clothes bracket every single year ever?? this is almost a Triumph for her! Never have i seen a woman so gorgeous Hellbent on dressing ugly for the sheer fun of it LOL

  4. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I kinda love that dress. The bottom is too busy but the top…I love how it’s nude and clingy, surprisingly gorgeous. Rooney however is a stone pretending to be human.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

I like the dress. Do I think it’s the best look of the night? No way, but it’s far from the worst.

I actually like Rooney, too. I’ve seen plenty of interviews/pics of her smiling and being humorous. She comes across as shy, not like a stone come to life.

      • Esmom says:

I’m with you. I like the dress and I’ve always liked her style. I also think she gets a bad rap.

      • mee says:

I like her too, and generally like her style. I have warmed to her particularly after I saw the short video clip with the NYT where she spoke about her favorite love scene being the scene in Toy Story III where the toys get one last chance to play with Andy. She was so warm, sweet, and open in that moment and perfectly described the bittersweet ending. I think she’s actually just a very sensitive person. I can identify with her serious demeanor and think she probably just doesn’t know how else to be.

      • V4Real says:

I fine her unconventionally pretty. So what she doesn’t smile.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I kinda like the dress too.
And I’m kinda annoyed for the writers constantly asking her to smile. Maybe she’s uncomfortable on the red carpet. Maybe she doesn’t like her smile. Leave the woman alone. I never smile in photographs because I hate my smile ( yes, I’m totally taking this personally, lol). Also, no colours FTW.

      I kinda like Amanda’s dress.
      Catriona looks awful.

      • Goats on the Roof says:

I was watching the red carpet arrivals last night, and it all looked so exhausting. Having to smile and look a certain way, being yelled at to turn this way or that. There were some, like Taraji Henson, who did a great job smizing and striking poses, but I could see how that’s not for everyone.

  5. Khadija says:

Out of all the Alexander McQueen’s I actually like Patricia’s the best. Her lipstick is nice as well. Patricia just cannot help that she has little to no personality.

    Catriona looks amazing.

Amanda normally looks like she fell into a pile of clothes blindfolded and then put on the closest thing to her. Having said that… she looks good here. A bit washed out but good, for her.

  6. minxx says:

What’s happening with Alexander McQueen? These dresses look awful! Rooney Mara looks like she just got defrosted a bit to walk the carpet but she’s going to hop back into the freezer right after the ceremony. Just looking at her makes me shiver.

    • Dani2 says:

😂 she photographs beautifully and she’s one of my favourite actresses but she just looks so miserable at these things and she’s attended so many events this season, but your comment made me LOL

  7. ell says:

all the alexander mcqueen’s dresses look awful. they look like old underwear stitched together.

  8. platypus says:

She looks like a post-apocalyptic bride (and I kinda love it).

  9. Div says:

I don’t get the Rooney snark or at least I don’t get the snark based on her being serious (the corpse bride snark though I totally get lol). She has very severe features, she doesn’t smile much, and she looks like she has consumption but it’s not like she’s drunk on the red carpet (cough cough Chris Evans) and she always looks rather polished and professional. There are a lot of dudes who also have a case of resting bitch face too. I actually like the dress but it washes her out and would look better in a brighter shade.

    Caitriona looks fab though.

  10. Betti says:

I like the dress but no on her – the whole look washes her out, she’s too pale skinned to carry off that colour. Am not a fan of Rooney, she comes across as pretentious and too try hard to be some sort of kooky actress wannabe.

    • holly hobby says:

She just comes across as dead inside or a real joy kill. Sorry if I had to pick who to sit with at a party, I’d choose Tarji Henson over this sad pale thing.

  11. Dani2 says:

I once saw a funny comment that encapsulates how I feel about Rooney at events perfectly: “Rooney, no one is forcing you to be there. You can act as if you aren’t above it for a few hours. Your real name is Patricia, for chrissakes.”

LOL she is a good actress but she looks like her soul has left her body at these events

    • Div says:

To be fair her middle name is Rooney and apparently the whole billionaire football dynasty family has several members that go by their middle names. It’s not like something she made up out of the blue.

      • Dani2 says:

Oh yeah I’m aware that it’s her real name, that was just a comment I saw on another site that made me laugh.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Rooney is her middle name, for chrissakes. It’s not like she’s the only person on the planet to prefer her middle name. Some people really take the snark and criticism to a ridiculous level, IMO.

      • Dani2 says:

like I said, that was a comment I saw on another site (ONTD) and it was just a joke that made me laugh. It’s not a serious criticism at all, relax.

    • Aila says:

That made me giggle, Dani2. Thanks for posting that.

I am sure there are pics out there of Rooney smiling — we just never see them. Is Dour Rooney more popular than Smiling Rooney?

      • qwerty says:

She always smiled before the Girl with the dragon tattoo. Wore her hair down and dressed girly too. Her style and demeanor changed considerably after her transformation for that role. Personally I think it’s for the better.

    • Kitten says:

LOL. That’s hilarious. She annoys me to no end.

  12. Blackbetty says:

Wow Alexander McQueen has gone down hill since he died.

  13. Nancy says:

I don’t dislike Rooney’s dress completely. The top is ill fitting. My problem with her is the attitude. Maybe she’s shy, or trying to go for a cool chick thing, but a smile certainly would help, she has a pretty face.

  14. Div says:

I think Brie, Saorise, and Alicia are all very talented but they are definitely out there campaigning (especially Brie) and I love that in comparison Cate and Rooney have showed up to handful of events and that’s it.

    • Dani2 says:

I don’t know about Cate but Rooney has definitely been campaigning just as much as the other three you mentioned – she was at the BAFTA Los Angeles a few days ago, she was at the W Magazine party for best performances of the year (she was also featured in that special), she was also at the palm springs festival last week, she’s participated in the Variety actors on actors studio with Steve Carrell, she’s been featured in the New York Times favourite performances of the year – over the last month. So she’s definitely campaigning like the others, but I can’t hate on that, Carol is still one of my favourite films from 2015 and she was phenomenal in it.

      • Div says:

Rooney’s gone to several events but Brie has been lowkey campaigning everywhere… I love Brie so I have to admit the thirst makes makes me cringe a little but she’s been to at least seven or eight screenings (she’s always popping up on my twitter feed) along with nearly all of those events you named plus a couple of podcasts, interviews about Room with various newspapers like one that popped up in The Telegraph recently, and the THR roundtable. Room also came out in September versus Brooklyn and Carol which had much later release dates so it’s not like it is PR for the film.

  15. Tig says:

Rooney’s dress-what?? All I could think of was that breed of dog(Pouli??) whose coat looks like the skirt of this frock. And so agree- with her pale coloring- wear some color!

Not too crazy about the other two either. If the theme for this year’s Met Ball is going crazy with ruffles, there are two contenders right here for sure.

  16. kri says:

I don’t like any of these, but Rooney and her dead face bring nothing to the table. AT least Catriona looked like she wanted to be there. See, Roooney? You can be pale and slim and still look full of life!

  17. lilacflowers says:

Hasn’t Rooney worn that exact same dress, or something very similar, before? For me, the worst part of it was her hair. What was that thick thing she stuck on the back of her head?

    • holly hobby says:

She should move on from the dead look. Everyone knows she’s wearing shoe polish because her real hair color isn’t this. Sorry she won’t be in the Lisbeth sequel (there should have never been an American version. The Swedish one was just fine) so maybe she can get a better look.

  18. Neelyo says:

Mara’s moved into self-parody at this point.

  19. Karen says:

Rooney is probably happy you don’t like it. Shaved half teazed ponytail? Naked tore up dress? It’s art!

  20. Cee says:

Sarah Burton is the worst thing to happen to McQueen.

  21. felixswan2 says:

I actually really love Rooney’s makeup here. She looks lovely (the dress, not so much), but I’m so over her super serious shtick. It’s always the same when I see her in photos, so I agree with Kaiser on this one.

  22. ND says:

When is this “corpse pallor” trend going to die, already?? Mara’s dress looks like dead skin.

  23. Zigggy says:

I actually love Rooney’s dress! I wish it were a different colour, but it reminds me of something Courtney Love would have worn to an award show in the 90s.

    • cd3 says:

“it reminds me of something Courtney Love would have worn to an award show in the 90s.”

      …. Is that a compliment? 😉

  24. Rockin Robin says:

I want to burn all of these gowns.

  25. DiamondGirl says:

I like Amanda’s the best of the three.

  26. KCat says:

    Loved her hair

  27. Carmen says:

Those three dresses: ugh, ugh, and ugh.

  28. lila fowler says:

Rooney/Patsy always wears the same thing over and over. The dress has to be white, black or nude. The hair has to be slicked back. The makeup has to be minimal except for a dark lip. She is so lifeless and uninspired and frankly, boring. There is nothing behind those dead eyes, nothing. Someone needs to tell her that the asymmetry in her face is less noticable when she smiles. I know that her teeth are not great and she has a bit of a small mouth, but she needs to start working those facial muscles. Because the whole one side of her face being bigger and wider than the other is distracting.

Oh and her dress is awful. It looks like used toilet paper clinging to a nightgown.

  29. Em' says:

It really is a sad day. David Bowie is dead and Alexander McQueen has become the new Marchesa. Sarah Burton has killed the house

  30. What's inside says:

That dress look is about 4 years old and Mara can’t carry it off with a cart. She needs to get a different look that is not Queen of the Dead.

  31. Lindsay says:

Rooney Mara used to wear very girly clothing and smile on the red carpet, the she got the role in GWTDT and since then she’s convinced that she actually is Lisbeth Salandar and she’s this troubled deep thing who must wear dark lipstick and never look like she’s enjoying herself.

  32. Me ThreeI says:

I think we need to do an intervention with the designers! Yikes!!!! I must admit I just don’t get Rooney. Never have liked her and doubt I ever will. I guess I feel like she’s just like most of the other so called stars and “models” today…they seem to have bought their way into celebrity. Or their fathers did. Enough said. Sorry!
