Alicia Vikander didn’t pretend that she was ‘asleep’ for the Oscar nominations

wenn23264691

I usually don’t care enough to cover the actors’ reactions to their Oscar nominations. You know why? Because they usually say the same stuff. They were asleep. Their publicist called them and woke them up. Or maybe their spouse, or mother, something like that. The point of the “how I found out I was nominated for an Oscar” story is to seem like you forgot the nominations were coming in, or that you were too cool to care. Alicia Vikander didn’t get that memo. Which makes sense, because she’s been very open and forward about waging an Oscar campaign and what she thinks she deserves or has earned for her work. So I ended up finding her story to be pretty honest. She called into Today and said:

“I just woke up and I was trying to look at the live thing and as soon as it came up for the Best Supporting Actress category, my wifi just went off and then I got a call and I was really nervous to pick it up.”

[Via E! News]

I like this. I like that she doesn’t feel compelled to make up a story about sleeping or “forgetting” that this was the day the nominations came out. She wanted an Oscar nomination. She said as much throughout 2015. She shilled for it. She worked for it. And she was up on Oscar nomination morning trying to see if her work paid off. Oh, and her boyfriend Michael Fassbender got nominated too. I bet his official date will be his sister or his mother, but Fassy and Alicia will go to all the parties together afterwards.

Other reactions… Brie Larson was in Australia working on Kong: Skull Island (with Lord Dragonfly) and she called into Today to say: “I am feeling incredible…I can’t even believe it. I am just sitting here in complete and utter shock over all of this. I feel like I’m in a very bizarre Alice in Wonderland dream right now. Just the nomination alone is so incredible…it’s so cool. I feel like I get to join this cool club of people that I love.” Well played, Brie. We haven’t given her enough credit for her really brilliant and quiet Oscar campaign.

Saoirse Ronan also called into Today and told her story: “I was asleep…My mom ran into me, tears streaming down her face so I knew it was either good news or bad news and it was the best news ever. We’re delighted.” You can read more reactions here.

Let’s start rewarding and applauding chicks that are openly ambitious this year, yeah?? cause this: ” she doesn’t feel compelled to make up a story about sleeping or “forgetting” that this was the day the nominations came out. She wanted an Oscar nomination. She said as much throughout 2015. She shilled for it. She worked for it. And she was up on Oscar nomination morning trying to see if her work paid off”

    Is refreshing as hell

Also let’s stop with the bf thing, cause to be real He is a GREAT actor that still can’t open a movie in the U.S. so her profile can’t be raised thanks to him, when he can’t do that for his own self, ya know?

    • Squiggisbig says:

The issue with the bf thing to me is that while I don’t think Fassy can raise her profile, because as people have pointed out he can’t even raise his own profile, it comes across like SHE thinks he can raise her profile and it feels like she’s constantly trying to remind us they’re together.

      • Minxx says:

        Exactly!

      • tealily says:

I wonder if she is just completely smitten with the guy, and maybe he isn’t quite as smitten with her. I haven’t seen her in anything, so I have no dog in this race, but maybe she just has no filter and is laying it all out there. Based on this comment, I think that’s possible.

      • FF says:

Yeah but so what? That just sells the story that she thinks the world of him (obvs the world doesn’t share this yet but…)

If they’ve been seeing each other for a year why can’t she call him her boyfriend? She’s not KStew, or something.

    • Sixer says:

      Yes, yes and thrice yes.

We’re always going on about women having more agency. Then along comes an actor who actually believes in her own agency and uses it to great effect and we all go FAMEWHORE! THIRSTY! GET AWAY WITH HER!

      • Insomniac says:

Yep. Good for her — she’s not ashamed to go after what she wants and to be open about that.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Thank you Sixer. My thoughts exactly.

      • teacakes says:

consider this co-signed – she’s honest about her ambition and isn’t trading on faux too-normal-for-it airs or anyone else’s hard work. She wants recognition and has the chops to potentially get it, why can’t we celebrate her having this as a professional goal instead of going all ‘you’re not supposed to care about anything but the ART!’ on her?

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

YES! I’m actually liking her more & more, yeah she’s ambitious hell yeah she worked for it & she should be proud. Ambitious is not a bad thing, she knows what she wants & she’s had a good year. I’m rooting for her, she deserves that award. Go Alicia!

      • Snappyfish says:

I have always liked this girl & I thought she looked lovely for the globes in the LV. She was good in ex machina, cute in Man from Uncle & Oscar worthy in The Danish Girl. I like her strong minded & go after what I want attitude. I truly hope she wins

    • jammypants says:

I quite like her. She was wonderful in Ex Machina and The Danish Girl. I find her blunt attitude refreshing.

    • Bridget says:

I’ve never really gotten the dislike toward her. Is this really what we want – for women to work hard but then to have to pretend that their success just kind of happened to little ol’ them?

    • OhDear says:

Heh, I checked the Oscar live blogs to see if she was nominated just because I wanted to predict how people would react 🙂

I find her refreshing as well.

    • mia girl says:

QQ – I’m with you on this. So with you.

PS I haven’t been on CB as much as I’d like lately, but the posts I do come on, I am noting the absence of @mimif. Where has she been?

      • antipodean says:

@mia girl, you are right, we haven’t seen mimif for a few days. I hope she didn’t get eaten by a giant CROQUEMBOUCHE, we all know how much she loves those. Yoo hoo, mimif, where are you?

    • Grumf says:

Exactly.I like her. She’s ambitious, self aware and very good at her job.

    • TreadStyle says:

+1 QQ totally agree. She’s not rude about any of it, she’s very earnest. She comes off very sweet in interviews, especially ones w co stars where I think she struggles less. She’s just who she is and she’s not trying to hide that. I like that she’s stuck to her more understated style and appearance too. She’s a great addition to the young actress group in my book.

    • I Choose Me says:

      A-freaking-men!

    • Carol says:

+ 1000. She worked hard, she recognizes that she did good work, she promoted herself (like all working women should – men do it so should women!), wants the recognition for her efforts and appreciates it when she gets it. What’s wrong with that? I don’t think she is anywhere near some other actresses before her, like Sharon Stone, who demand and require accolades.

      • Farhi says:

“she promoted herself (like all working women should – men do it so should women!), ”

Exactly! I think at least part of the reason that Scandinavians have more equality between men and women, not just on paper but in action. They don’t expect women to be simpering little nothings , their women are equal. So to Alicia such behavior is natural, she doesn’t know anything else.

In the US there are still different rules and expectations for men and women behavior. This is why you are seeing such phony reactions from the US actresses . They can’t come out over ambitious and aggressive. They pretend things happened through lucky circumstances and their were completely and totally unaware. It is the same in the workplace.

    • dana says:

LOVE THIS and true. I’m still not over how hard Julianne Moore threw herself everywhere last year so lets stop pretending everyone isn’t working the Oscar card. As for the bf thing, AGREED. No one works MF, sorry. Had he been Johnny Depp i’d maybe rethink it. Also you can’t go comparing a woman who’s been in 4 successful films in her own right, nominated and won tons of awards this year with Kate Bosworth. Sorry. Acknowledging your dating and not hiding from it is not her being a famewhore. And comparing a mans chatter about his GF and a woman’s is expected. Ofc she’ll give more info than him. But he’s still there holding her hand, giving her his jacket and being open about his Girlfriend.

    • Otto says:

How about the vogue article about her where he is being mentioned? I don’t get it. It’s so lame, why do you have to mention your boyfriend’s name when given the circumstances people can interpret this as thirsty, clingy. Of course, he can raise her profile which he did and she herself said it this year. These articles are crafted together with the actor’s pr team, you can imagine that she knew that and she agreed upon… The first time she was recognized was when she was with him on the street and they recognized him first. How about the two of them in Cannes ‘catwalking’ for the paparazzi… And when they suddenly got attention she grabbed her LVuitton bag and put it in front of her so as to promote it! Not to mention how fake and self-conscious they were – ‘definitely’ not a planned move…hilarious…

  2. Abbott says:

I’ll say it: I’m starting to like Alicia. A lot. She’s not hiding her ambition with an “aw shucks” routine. And she seems really sweet in her live interviews and I like the sound of her voice, sorry not sorry Kaiser and CB.

    • Dani2 says:

With you there. I’m here for it. She’s good at what she does and she’s ambitious too. Love it.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I love her reaction. I love her hustle. I’m just underwhelmed by her acting.

And, Saoirse, I love you, but bullshit on being asleep.

    • Miss M says:

      Co-sign, Abbot!
I have been her fan since I saw her in Ex-machina. What a great year for her! Enjoy, Alicia!

As for Brie, all my friends that saw “room” has great things to say about the movie and about ber performance (unfortunately, i was writing my dissertation when it was shown at Coolidge). So i dont undertand why everyone is so surprised with her nominations.

    • vauvert says:

Me too. I don’t like her interviews, and I think her fashion sense is very blah, but I think being ambitious and asking to be recognized for hard work is admirable and should be encouraged. I hate faux modesty and I would much rather someone stand up and say ” I worked very hard, I did a good job, I am pleased with my work and I want to be rewarded in this very competitive environment”. I still don’t find her particularly beautiful, but I don’t see that the degree of beauty one has should influence the quality of their work or the reward that goes along with it. Good for her.

  3. Dani2 says:

I like this girl more and more as time passes. She was phenomenal in Ex Machina, the best part of TDG for me, great in A Royal Affair and also in Testament of Youth. And she hasn’t hidden her desire to be celebrated in her field, I appreciate her honesty and transparency.

  4. Alexandra says:

Pretty bummed that she was overlooked for Ex-Machina; she deserves more credit for her talent than she receives.

    • Original T.C. says:

      +1
I still have the chills from when she went from nice curious robot to menacing stare and the words “Nathan is not your friend”. Like her co-star in the film I did a double take and a big ‘WTF did I just imagine that look?’.

Also I wish she would get more credit for her language skills. She acts in languages that are not her original language and does a great job in them when most actors in Hollywood-men and women can’t.

P.S. Love her honesty. We FANS wake up early to hear the nominations so OF COURSE the actors who stand to win nominations do too. Who are they fooling?

  5. anon says:

this girl is even more overrated than Jennifer Lawrence. I’m sure someone is buying her nods

    • jammypants says:

What on earth?? Jennifer is the most overrated actress in Hollywood right now. She is getting noms by default, and not for her talent. She got her golden globe because of questionable “technicality” whereas Brie got Best Actress for an actual strong performance. Vikander got recognition because of her hustle and hard work. Jennifer gets by from her past recognition and no longer present work, which to me, lacks any range. She’s also miscast in her O’Russell roles and horrible as Mystique. Her last Hunger Game film was just her staring off to space and screaming the other half. Time for Lawrence to take a seat and get owned by Larson and Vikander this year. Jen was the It girl three years ago. It’s time people move on.

    • Josefina says:

Idk. A lot of people here think she’s genuinely talented. Maybe some Academy voters do so too.

  6. Shaunna says:

I thought her performance in The Danish Girl was incredible. Only cheering for 3 actors this awards season. Christian Bale was amazing, Leo was excellent and Alicia was fantastic!!

  7. Lindy79 says:

How can you be in bed “asleep” when there is a chance you’ll be nominated for an Oscar?? Saoirse I expected better of you.

If she’s in Ireland, it was 1.30pm when they were announced. Likewise LA it was 8.30am, not exactly middle of the night. Get up ffs! Or watch it on you tube on your phone in bed.

    • Hawkeye says:

Lindy, I’m wondering the same thing! I would be eating my weight in Cheetos in anticipation as well!

    • Jen says:

+1…remember all the news coverage talking about people waking up at 2 and 3 in the morning to watch William and Kate’s wedding, something that had nothing to do with most of the world? You’re waking up at 1:30 or whatever if there was a chance you were going to find out you were nominated for an Oscar, let’s not kid.

    • M.A.F. says:

No it was not 830 in LA. It was 530 am. How do I know that? I was up getting ready for work and saw the announcements.

      • lindy79 says:

Ok fair enough my bad calculations but still.. i get up at 6.30 most days so.. youre pretty much a guarantee oscar nominee in your early 20s… youre awake not sleeping peacefully in the land of nod. Besides if her mothers anything like mine and she was up, id have been up too

      • M.A.F. says:

Well, it would have been 8:30 on the East Coast…so she could have been up? Or maybe she deiced to sleep in?

    • Ethelreda says:

It seems Saoirse is in the US right now (I believe she’s based in New York?) so it would have been early morning when the awards were announced. Like you, I’m not buying the ”I was asleep” line. This is a huge event in her career, but she wasn’t bothered to get out of bed in the morning to hear it? Nah, not buying it.

  8. SusanneToo says:

Danish Girl hasn’t opened here yet, but she was great in Ex Machina and I’ve liked her in all I’ve seen her in. I like her very much. Go, Alicia!

  9. Minxx says:

What a surprise she was up to watch it, I bet she didn’t even go to sleep. This girl showed up for her Vogue interview 30 minutes early at …. 5:45 a.m. Talk about eager! I also remember a story that, before she was famous some director told her “look me up when you’re in NYC”.. and she jumped on the plane the very next day. LOL.
I respect ambition, hard work and talent. But not this is eagerness that borders on compulsion. And I’m very underwhelmed by her performances and screen presence. She has no charisma, IMO. But she will probably get an Oscar, God bless her, she hustled for it. I always felt the same way about Reese Witherspoon, btw. Sweet on the surface, bitchy and controlling underneath. Just not my cup of tea.
On the other hand, JLaw getting another nom for Joy is just plain ridiculous. Enough already!
I root for Brie Larson for Best Actress and Kate Winslet for Supporting. I’m very glad Rachel got a nod. And I believe that Saoirse slept, not EVERYONE is consumed by ambition to this degree, really.

    • BadAssCompass says:

co-sign! still don’t find her appealing, tho’ I’m starting to give her credit that she might be just head over heals for Fassy and he’s just like, mkay until something else comes along. If he does not finally introduce her on the Oscars rc, it’s never going to happen. I would dump him for sure 😀
as for JLaw, she’s offically becoming next Meryl Streep in the noms department. I’m happy for Rampling, preparing to watch 45 Years soon, it seems quite nuanced and difficult role.

      • danielle says:

I like her even more now. Alicia may sound a little eager, but she knows what she wants and goes for it. I respect that a lot.

    • Juls says:

What movies with Vikander have you watched?

      • Ariadne says:

Not Ex-Machina from the sound of it ..

      • BadAssCompass says:

I’ve seen her in Karenina and Ex Machina, the latter being more impressive due to sole focus on her character but honestly she didn’t do anything Sean Young for instance hasn’t done in Blade Runner. Also, it’s heavily atmospheric movie with Isaac and Gleeson being great as well but nobody’s mentioning them. So I’m not saying she’s a crap of an actress, she is solid and possibly better than J Law but just not my type of a person. I prefer actors who love the job not the game.

    • Ariadne says:

I don’t think she’s a bad actress at all TBH. Better than JLaw.

And I can’blame her for hustling a bit in an industry where women have such a limited timeframe to make an impression

    • korra says:

…..Why is it so bad? You DON’T want someone professional, passionate, and so on time they’re actually early?

I do think Saoirse doesn’t care. She’s working on the Crucible (so there are probably late nights) and she’s trying not to get attached or get her hopes up for this. I get that attitude. Plus her Oscar campaign is just nowhere near as blatant. She just doesn’t strike me as the campaigning type a la fassbender. She’s young and pretty whereas Brie is quickly approaching 30 and is apparently not considered pretty enough or ugly enough to last in Hollywood. I don’t know. I still love her.

    • isabelle says:

IMO its ambition & drive. Men do it all the time. When men network they network, they don’t let invites slide and she isn’t either.. ..and as an early arriver, time conscious person, love that she shows up early for her interviews.

  10. Peach says:

Add me to the list of people who appreciate her honesty. I’ll take her response today over the phony “aww, shucks! Who ME??” responses to appear “shocked and humbled” (as if they didn’t for months they’d be nominated lol)

The “sleeping” thing is pretty lame too.

    • Farhi says:

“as if they didn’t for months they’d be nominated lol”

Yeah, given that they campaigned for it for months . They don’t know if they’d be nominated for sure but they know their chances and they have to work for it. They are all dying to know if they made the cut.
An equivalent would be for presidential candidates to pretend that they slept while the results were counted.

    • danielle says:

Yeah, come on, there was little surprise to those Oscar nominations, these people are being nominated for every award out here.

  11. nina says:

Talent wise, she’s just underwhelming for me. Not sure about the hype. But I agree that it’s nice to see an actress not campaign like Anne Hathaway

  12. M.A.F. says:

I can’t remember how I reacted to her declaration in the spring but as I said in the Oscar post, she is growing on me. I like the fact that she isn’t bullsh**ting anyone.

  13. Kiki says:

I must say this… I am beginning to feel better for Alicia Vikander. Although I still think she is a snob and privileged I believe her that she really wants this and really works ard for it. Ambition is very good and hustle well paid off. So even though I still think she should lighten up and let lose a little bit… I admire her hustle. And I really meant it I hope she does get the fame that she deserves as much more fame than her “Beautiful ” boyfriend.

  14. platospopcorn says:

I want to jump on this bandwagon! I have honestly never seen a film of hers (embarrassing!) but plan to remedy that post haste with Ex Machina, because that seems to be the one that most of my friends agree on. But I just fundamentally like everything I read about her here. I also thought that one pic of her and MF after the globes (she’s looking at her phone and holding his hand) was really, really cute. I’M IN!!!!

And I’m so so so so so so so so over Jennifer Lawrence, it’s not even funny. >:(

    • Edie says:

ITA. It’s so refreshing to have someone OWN it, I do appreciate her candor. Less gushing, more candor, we can handle it! Hope she can keep holding her own.

Jennifer Lawrence makes me want to cry. My heart sank when I saw her name on the list… ugh.

  15. TOK says:

Team Alicia. Talented, works hard, knows what she wants.

  16. Juls says:

Agree. I hate when actors pretend that they don’t care, like Leto. She has a terrific year with three critically acclaimed performances. Category fraud aside,it’s a deserved nomination.

  17. CornyBlue says:

She said way back when she expected to be Oscar nominated and she delivered. You can have my stan card Alicia. DO NOT DISAPPOINT.

    • KCat says:

She is. Everyone is falling for the hype like JLaw. That’s what mag covers and paylola will do for you.

  18. petitehirondelle says:

Hum she has a good year and has said it so she is in the list. I still have the feeling that being suddenly overexposed and hype is not good. she will be boring in one year

  19. lila fowler says:

I really like Alicia. Is she still in LA? She was up at 5:45 to watch? God bless her. I just saw on another site that Rooney Mara has MORE screen time in Carol than Cate Blanchett and is still in Supporting. And apparently she is officially the actress with the most number of minutes to ever be in the category. So that’s a bunch of crap. I hope Alicia wins, or Kate Winslet.

  20. Eru says:

Well i finally saw Danish Girl. Did not like the movie. Too exhausting and depressing. But Alicia was good in it. And not annoying. And not sad and bored like she usually looks on the carpets and interviews. Her character was nice and fun.

I dont hate Alicia anymore. Well I still dont want her to win awards this years because sit down. Not everything at once. Nominations are enough for now.

But I like her honesty here, There is something “non-Hollywood” about her. She is not trying to fake everything around her. And that story about wi-fi proves that again. I dont think most of the actors watch it live. But they surely search for it on news on the Internet right after. And all that thing about sleeping and not caring is bull. Of course they care and pray for it.

    • Josefina says:

That’s what I’ve always liked about her – how honest she is. She’s a newcomer actress doing Oscar-baity films, OF COURSE she wants an Oscar! She’s ambitious and proud of her talent. That’s great. We need more women like that, who have agency over their lives and are proud of it. That whole “oh shucks, me!” schtick has to go away.

I’m glad people are finally warming up to her.

  21. NN says:

Rooney and Alicia should be nominated for best lead, not supporting! What a joke.

    • Farhi says:

Would that mean that Remayne would have to compete in overcrowded supporting actor and Blanchett would have to be in supporting actress? It looks like the studios thought that Remayne and Blanchett were more bankable investments.

    • Edie says:

Yeah, I agree… “Carol” and “Danish Girl” both have *two* leads, IMO, but yes, Farhi, Blanchett and Redmayne are known quantities and bankable. Eddie befuddles us all, but he won’t shut-up, and Cate, to me at least, is rapidly a Meryl Streep/Katharine Hepburn figure.

  22. Pasco says:

Pretty good but not outstanding performance. Sorry folks, have seen better and most of the people here should better watch some true movies and performances so you can judge…
