Michael Fassbender is ‘baffled’ by Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar snub for ‘Steve Jobs’

The last time Michael Fassbender went through an Oscar campaign, it was two years ago and few people were paying attention to him. Mostly because it seemed like he was going through the motions, plus he barely walked red carpets and didn’t even show up to some major events. That campaign – for 12 Years a Slave – came two years after Michael thought he would get an Oscar nomination for Shame. Fassy talked about how he felt burned by the Shame situation of actually putting in some Oscar campaign effort and it not paying off. So he barely put in any effort for his first Oscar nomination, and he became a non-factor that year.

But, as I’ve said several times over the past few months, Fassy has been more approachable and dare I say, campaign-friendly this time around. He hasn’t been shaking hands at every screening, but he shows up when he’s invited, he poses happily, he’s more talkative and giving. I think he’s sort of found a way to campaign his own way, where he doesn’t get his hopes up and he just goes to these shows to be professional and have a good time. There are worse ways to handle it. So when I saw the headline “Michael Fassbender is baffled by Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar snub,” I thought “Oh, God, he’s going to bitch about it and come across as unprofessional!” But he doesn’t. He just sounds nice here.

Michael Fassbender wasn’t himself when he found out he was nominated for Best Actor on Thursday morning. The actor told EW he learned about his Oscar nomination while in the makeup chair for Assassin’s Creed (due out Dec. 21). In the video game adaptation, Fassbender plays two characters, Callum Lynch and the character’s ancestor Aguilar, and when he heard about the Best Actor nom, he was in the middle of changing from one to the other.

“I just feel very lucky, very privileged,” Fassbender says about the nomination. “It’s been such a great year for cinema, even films that haven’t been nominated.”

This marks the second nod for Fassbender in three years; he was also honored with a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. Asked if things felt different this time around, Fassbender said no. “I don’t think it ever changes,” he says. “The first time, again, I was very humbled by the consideration. It’s the same this time, especially considering the company that I’m in and the performances that haven’t been considered. It’s always very exciting. … Well, not always, just the twice.”

While Fassbender was pleased to his about the nomination for his Steve Jobs costar Kate Winslet, the snub of screenwriter Aaron Sorkin left him confused. “It’s baffling, but that’s why I was saying that I feel privileged. You can never take these things for granted,” he says. “I’m just baffled by that.”

[From EW]

Well, at least he didn’t say he was sleeping! I appreciate that he wasn’t trying to play that game. He was at work, which is probably the best thing for him. Fassy also told EW that after he wraps on Assassin’s Creed, he’s off to Norway of all places to film Tomas Alfredson’s The Snowman, then after that, he’ll be doing Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, the sequel to the awful Prometheus.

Fassy also chatted with USA Today about his nomination this year – he was asked about whether he had spoken to his girlfriend about their his-and-hers nominations and he said, “I haven’t really spoken to anyone. I’ll call people once I wrap tonight.”

Yes. Fassy, I appreciate that you don’t want to talk about your other girlfriends in front of Kaiser and me. Call us once you wrap tonight.

  2. Jayna says:

He’s so hot. I’ve joined the adore Fassy train.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

I’m on his adore train too. He’s my bae along with Idris and maybe TH.

    • La La Land says:

I’ve been a closeted Fassy train wreck for a sometime. Oh well. (Movie still sucked). I really think Fish Tank was his best film yet …. even more than Shame … or at least second to Shame.

  3. Mia4s says:

    He’s learning. Well done Fassy.

  4. InvaderTak says:

Yes I can’t imagine why he would get snubbed for a movie that has been done before about a man that,if you ask his actual employees and people who knew him, was a major jerk. Audiences apparently weren’t interested anymore with perpetuating the mystique around him either as the film bombed.
    Baffling indeed.

    • raincoaster says:

Actually, the film got flack from the Apple fanboys for making Jobs look bad, but Wozniak said it was the most accurate portrayal of that side of Jobs.

  5. Penelope says:

His teeth could look better–they’re off-color.

    That said, he’s a cutie!

  7. Katie Oh says:

Given that Assassin’s Creed is shooting in Malta, where the Oscar noms were announced at 2:30pm in the afternoon, it wouldn’t have looked good if he had told everyone he had been sleeping…

  8. Bridget says:

Meh. Aaron Sorkin wrote another Aaron Sorkin-y script, about a topic no one was dying to learn more about.

  9. Original T.C. says:

I appreciate him pointing out that there have been great performances all around that were not nominated. He doesn’t just stick to his peers “nominated” but also those not nominated. I suspect he is Team #IrdisandSamJacksonwererobbed. So he still sounds like he is not falling for the Oscar hype since that GQ interview but he is just saying it in a more subtle “grateful for the nom” way so people who missed his point don’t freak out and call him bitter.

P.S. Fassy did media interviews to promote 12 Years a Slave, what he and Brad Pitt did not do was to push themselves ahead of the Black actors and Director who were the most important part of the film. Had they both showed up to the Oscar screening and media roundtables, it would have been all about the White guys. I applaud how well they handled such a delicate situation. They showed class and respect for their teammates.

    • Abigail says:

Thanks, T. C., this is absolutely right. Fassy doesn’t get enough credit for being the class act that he is.

      • Addison says:

He is a class act, that is for sure. But many people misinterpret his words and that can’t be helped.

He has always sounded honest in any interview and always expressed how he feels about having the opportunity to work in this industry. I think it took him a while to realize that he was going to be working steadily in this industry.

  10. Kiki says:

I am so disappointed in him. I wish he should just be “very grateful and privilege ” for everything and just shut it. I am still angry at the “White Awards” and no one says anything.

Michael Fassbender, you broke my heart this time by what you said… Which is little. I hope you and your “Twinkle Toes” girlfriend have a very famed and fortuned life.

    • Eggland's worst says:

Thank god someone said something. This “feeling privileged” crap is irritating. He has been pouting this whole time because he felt entitled to win for Shame. I think the only reason he is more public this time is he is sleeping with someone who has just as strong a sense of entitlement as he does. That’s why they’re together, they are both madly in love with themselves.

      • Kiki says:

I honestly don’t care about their relationship at this time because i hace some hope they will break up this time but what really irritates me is that if you going to say something about the elephant in the room then juat say it flat out or don’t say anything at all.

      • Addison says:

Ha, ha, this is hilarious, Michael never thought he felt entitled to an award for shame. It’s so interesting what people believe.

Michael did not think he was going to get a nomination for that. As Shame started playing, there were many people who saw this movie and thought this performance deserved an award. They started telling him he was going to get nominated (he should have won that year). The more people told him, eventually he started to believe it. So when the names were announced and his name was not, yeah he got mad.

But he did’t dwell on it. By the next day (or maybe a few days, I can’t remember) he was more angry with himself for letting all of those comments get the better of him. He also realized that there is a lot of politics involved in this, and that he himself was not a politician but an actor. That he would concentrate on that.

I don’t think he will ever actively campaign, if he is filming somewhere far he won’t, if he is closer he will do some. I hope he never moves to LA for months just to suck up to people. THAT would be beneath him. But if he does I guess I can’t blame him. I would rather he not. He has such an amazing talent his performances will be looked at long after we are gone. While not all of his performances are Oscar Worthy, he has more thumbs up than down from me. Ha, ha, hope the estates of Ebbert and Rodgers don’t come after me for using that reference.

  11. hogtowngooner says:

I’d love it if he won. Not only because he’s a fantastic actor, but he was REALLY good in Steve Jobs. Unfortunately I think it will take a miracle to derail the Leo thirsty train this year. The writing was excellent as well, not as preachy as Aaron Sorkin’s stuff can often be. But he’s already got a writing Oscar, I guess.

    • Josefina says:

I love Fassy as an actor but I felt this was one of his weaker performances, actually. I think it’s because of the overall material, an actor can elevate something crappy only so much.

I guess it’s because I never really understood all the massive circle jerk around Steve Jobs. I mean, he created a brand of overpriced electronics. He didn’t invent phones, or computers, or mp3 players. I just understand what’s so revolutionary about a white cell phone.

  12. SashimiV says:

    I want him!

  13. petitehirondelle says:

Very cool that he is talking about the ones who are not nominated and i don’t think i have listened that with the others…. and he is right. i’am sure he thinks that some nominations are bla

for the girlfriend question, he answers subtly without avoiding the question

  14. Andrea says:

He doesn’t talk to his girlfriends much when he is working, why he has stated many times him and long term relationships do not mix.
