Alicia Vikander in Mary Katrantzou at the Critics’ Choice Awards: pretty or twee?

wenn23374570

Alicia Vikander made it on stage at the Critics’ Choice Awards twice last night. First, she won Best Supporting Actress, then she accepted an award for Ex-Machina on behalf of the director. While she came across as genuinely pleased and perfectly fine, I joked on Twitter that she would be impossibly smug after this. Everything is coming up Vikander, and if the Oscars end up going like the Critics’ Choice, we might have some problems.

Anyway, Alicia Vikander wore this custom-made Mary Katrantzou gown. People were going crazy for it on Twitter, but it’s not really my jam… on Alicia. Like, if Cate Blanchett had worn this, I probably would have loved it. But on Alicia… eh. I feel like she’s so small, the bead work comes close to being too heavy and almost overwhelming her. But! I do like that she went with a more styled look. My complaint about how she looks too undone for red carpets has fallen away – she wore makeup, she got her hair done, she put some effort into it. Alas, her boyfriend Michael Fassbender wasn’t there to support her or himself. Late last week, he was in London, partying with Leonardo DiCaprio, then he flew to Norway for work.

And here’s Gina Rodriguez in Safiyaa. I really like Gina, I think she’s absolutely beautiful and she has gorgeous coloring. But I have issues with her style. She veers too often into prom looks and bridesmaid looks and it’s not great. Last night, it was a bridesmaid look. Besides that, it’s totally the wrong color for her! You have to TRY to make Gina look washed out, and that’s exactly what happened. Girl, get a better stylist!

Both looked gorgeous. Alicia’s dress was stunning, even more so in motion. Loved it, my favorite of the night. I thought Gina’s dress was more of a 1940s silhouette than bridesmaid (maybe more the color issue?). She looked sleek, elegant, and pretty imo.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I love Alicia’s dress, and she should wear her hair up more, it looked great.
Gina’s dress is beautiful, a darker colour would have been nice, but the dress fits her like a glove.

      • embertine says:

Agreed, peach is a hard shade to wear and I’d have preferred a richer tone, but the silhouette is great on her. I do like the scarlet lippy though, works well with an orange-toned dress.

(I thought Alicia looked beautiful but the placement of some of the detailing on the dress was a bit unfortunate, like Evil Cuttlefish Boobs Are Judging Your Life Choices unfortunate)

      • ichsi says:

Oh yes, finally! The dress is really nice, it fits her slender body and SHE DID HER HAIR! She always has a pretty face but this dress and get-up make her look age-appropriate and not like some creepy Lolita fantasy. I’m so glad that she’s ditching the LV designs, they did her no favour at all.

    • ell says:

mary kantrantzou’s spring collection is absolutely gorgeous. pre-fall is a bit meh though.

    • Calcifer says:

I like Alicia’s dress, in my opinion she has a consistent style: a bit Bohemian, a bit folkloristic, not too ‘done’. It’s a look might be easy to appreciate for people from Northern Europe (as I am), as many women here like to dress that way. Scandinavian brands as well as Isabel Marant are very popular here, especially with women living in big cities. Alicia wears the night-time equivalent of that look.

And I agree with others here that her skin is luminous, one of her best features.

    • kate says:

The cut of Gina’s dress is perfect for her, but the color is such a bridesmaids colour. A jewel tone would have been stunning.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree about the color, though it fits her beautifully and she looks very pretty.

      • senna says:

I love, love, love the cut of her dress! It’s a shame about the colour. It’s like she picked the wrong pastel, since I think any other pastel would have been nice, or any bold jewel tone.

  2. Amelia says:

Her skin tone is so ridiculously gorgeous.
I actually hope she gets onstage at the Oscars, I know she’s not the most popular around here, but she’s really grown on me this awards season.

    • Locke Lamora says:

She’s grown on me too, I’m starting to like her more and more. But having seen The Danish Girl, I just don’t think it was an Oscar-worthy performance.
But they’re giving Oscars left and right to quite bafling choices these days ( How Penelope Cruz got an Oscar for VCB will forever remain a mystery to me) so who knows.

  3. Betti says:

I like Alicia’s dress and she generally has good style. I really need to watch Ex-Machina, even if its just to swoon over Oscar Isaacs dancing.

    • layla says:

      Oscar Isaac dancing in Ex Machina has become my E V E R Y T H I N G ! ! ! ! !

It is a FANTASTIC movie… with great performances all round. So unique and quietly mesmerising. Oh yeah, and Oscar Isaac dancing!!!!!!! #wheresthatgif

    • senna says:

I adored this movie so much, and she’s fantastic in it.

  4. Magpie says:

Ex_machina was my favorite film last year and while she was good, I thought issac and Gleeson were amazing. Gleeson had the most subtle role and he nailed it.

  5. vanessa says:

    both look absolutely gorgeous.

  6. Carol says:

alicia’s dress looks like the insides of a lady bug.

  7. Cc says:

Love both dresses. Alicia’s is stunning, I love all the colors and shapes against the black. Gina’s dress has a simple yet beautiful cut, she looks lovely.

    • Esmom says:

Agree with everything you said. 🙂

    • Azurea says:

Alicia’s dress is one of the most gorgeous I’ve ever seen!

    • Cc says:

It’s funny because I don’t usually like dresses with too much going on, say like Alicia’s, but somehow that dress is the exception, it has all those little things embroidered but it’s not overwhelming. And she looks fantastic in it.

  8. GlimmerBunny says:

Exactly what kind of “problem” will “we” have if Alicia wins an Oscar? She’s a good actress and very deserving of the award, and whether you like her style or personality shouldn’t factor into it at all…

    • Valois says:

No, she does not deserve an award this time. Simply because she was not a nsupporting actress and it’s so silly thatbthey are allowed to campaign for it just because it increases their chances.

      • Amber says:

+ Ding, ding, ding. I was hoping voters would ignore her and Rooney Mara and stop allowing this crap where lead performances sneak into supporting categories. (The Globes have their own category fraud issues but they didn’t allow this one this time.) It’s not fair to the other nominees competing against a lead role, and those spots could’ve gone to someone else to start with.

      • Farhi says:

What happens if a movie has 2 leads, though? Her and Redmayne are both leads and Mara and Blanchette are both leads. That is why one ended up in supporting. This is not new.

      • Amber says:

That is not why one ends up in the wrong category. I don’t understand your question @Farhi. What happens if multiple actors from the same film are worthy of a nomination? Well, they get nominated. Even if it’s in the same category. It happens all the time. Especially for supporting roles. There’s not a limit on representation in a category per film. If there’s four supporting actors worthy of a nod, then they compete for recognition. If a movie has more than one lead, then it has more than one lead. Susan Sarandon and Genna Davis get nominated for “Thelma & Louise” they’re both nominated as leads. For “Walk the Line” Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both represented the film in the lead acting categories. Redmayne is the lead; Vikander is the lead. They just know she wouldn’t have a chance competing in the lead category, so they campaigned/submitted as supporting. Just like Mara wouldn’t have been nominated at all if she was trying to compete in the lead category this year. The Globes didn’t allow it. Though BAFTAs let Mara slip into the supporting category. No, it’s not new. But it’s cynical bullsh*t that needs to stop.

      • Bridget says:

This one doesn’t feel as bad since Vikander would have likely had that Supporting Actress slot anyhow, for Ex Machina. For all we know she could have had the votes to be nominated twice in the same category, but since that’s against the rules they went with the role that had the most votes.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

I didn’t get that either. She’s already working a lot. If that’s the “problem”, it’s already there. I don’t see it that way, nobody forces me to watch her. And unless we look outside the nominations, she wouldn’t be the worst choice. If Kate Winslet gets an Oscar for that magic Polish accent that came and went during the movie, I’ll freak.

Anyway, I think she looks super pretty here. Also, I feel like the “twee” accusation comes up more with her than many other actresses because she has such a small frame and almost no curves. Everything tends to look a bit more twee on her than it would on others.

  9. Sixer says:

    I. Like. Her.

Why does this make me feel like some kind of rebel? She’s just a pretty kid who is quite good at acting, has a bit of open ambition, and some actual thoughts of her own.

What’s NOT to like? I don’t get it.

    • Kip says:

Yeah, me too, I am puzzled by the coverage of her here.

      • SugarQuill says:

        Same.

        Preach it, Sixer!

      • Armenthrowup says:

Me too – I always do a massive eye-roll when I see who has written about Alicia (or Jen Aniston for that matter). You shouldn’t expect an unbiased opinion. Alicia looked gorgeous, is a fantastic actress – shame some people can’t see past their jealousy over who she’s dating.

      • Allie says:

@Armenthrowup I like Alicia too, after watching the Royal Affair this weekend. That said, I HATE when people say it’s jealously when someone doesn’t like someone else. I don’t like a lot of celebrities, but it’s not because I’m jealous of them.

      • Sixer says:

I really wouldn’t know about jealousy as I’ve no idea who is or isn’t a Fassbender fan. But it doesn’t really look like jealousy to me. People seem to dislike her for HERSELF. And it seems to be a genuinely held dislike. That’s what I don’t get. You’ll always get a few proxy fan wars but the dislike of this one seems beyond that to me. And I honestly don’t get it.

      • Fluffy says:

This is the only forum I’ve seen her discussed at all so I’m sure I’m not getting a full picture, but at least on here, the anti-Alicia comments are explicitly about her relationship. Even the odd comments just going “I just don’t like her or her acting” are from posters with like 764 comments about how she’s forcing poor MF into a PR relationship and how she’s turned him into a monster, because what kind of monster doesn’t keep the existence of their SO a Pentagon-level secret?

    • Div says:

I don’t get the hate thrown her way either. She’s a talented, pretty girl who seems polite enough and hasn’t had any big gaffes. Frankly, I prefer her reserved yet straightforward attitude to the celebrities who go overboard with the golly gee and overly self-deprecating act (which sometimes strikes me as a PR move to seem relatable). I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve seen her, especially a Swedish film called “Pure.” I also think the comments about her using Fassbender are nonsense—he’s a talented man with a lot of credibility in the industry but he’s internet famous….not famous famous….and at this point I think the general public might be more aware of her.

      • Calcifer says:

@Div Agree with everything you’ve said!

      • SugarMalone says:

I like her too! The vitriol she inspires around here is bizarre. I think she’s one of the better actresses in her age group working right now and I’m glad she’s getting some deserved recognition.

I just watched PURE this past weekend – she would have been maybe 20 when she made it and she was phenomenal. I highly recommend checking it out. Also, it’s written and directed by a woman so it qualifies for 52 Films By Women, if any of you are doing that this year.

    • ell says:

i like her as well. she did that interview in which she didn’t come across very well, but i mean she’s human and it happens to say stuff that sounds a bit off, i’ve heard far worse anyway.

i find her generally lovely and quite funny, and a good actor as well. admittedly i though the danish girl was boring, but that wasn’t her fault.

    • SusanneToo says:

Here at CB it’s just the same few names who dislike her and their comments make it obvious WHY they dislike her. She seems to be doing fine elsewhere. I liked her as an actress the first time I saw her and I like the reserved yet confident personality that has emerged over the past year. Her entire look at the CC Awards was beautiful.

    • lila fowler says:

The same few don’t like her for the same reasons they hated on Hathaway: she’s young, pretty and dares to be unapologetically ambitious.

      • Dani says:

Oh yes, Lila. That’s totally it. The only reason anyone could dislike her or AnnE Hathaway is jealousy! /sarcasm

I dislike her (although I love Brie Larson, who is also young, pretty and unapologetically ambitious, something must be wrong with me!) But I hate Vikander’s style most of all. This dress is better than her WWI nurse gown, but still ugly overall. I keep waiting to be impressed by her, to have just one wow moment, but it never happens. I don’t think it will. I don’t get the love for her (and I’ve seen all her talked about movies now), but I also don’t need to insult the people who do like her.

  10. lilacflowers says:

    Alicia’s dress looks lovely.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

I like it too and don’t think it overwhelms her — if anything, we used to say that with her slender figure, “She can get away with it.”

  11. Abigail says:

Fassbender finished Assassin’s Creed on Friday and starts The Snowman today, on Monday. (Yes, I follow him that closely.)
    Now to Alicia:
Of all the dresses Alicia has worn this season, this one is at the top for me–simply a beautiful dress in its own right, and it moved well.

    • AG-UK says:

Yeah so Assassin’s Creed hopefully before the end of the year?? My son will be pleased me too 🙂

  12. Pituka says:

    I love Alicia’s dress

  13. Kiki says:

Alicia’s dress is beautiful and I don’t know who has a “problem” with her winning an oscar i know it’s not me who has a problem with her wining an Oscar. I for one want her to win an oscar, and in my ver fibre of my body I hope she does win an Oscar. She will enjoy what it is to be more famous when she travels alot, getting as much film roles as JLaw and hopefully everyone will love her to pieces while she has a star in her eyes when people says her name alot while her “hubby ” hold her purse. Oh wait, I hope she geta mr roles than Fassy, she will keep her fingers crossed for that Oscar.

And Michael Fassbender is partying with Leonardo DiCaprio? Alicia and Michael..
A gorgeous couple, good luck you Love Birds you sure will need it.

  14. vauvert says:

I like her makeup and hair here, much better than anything I have seen this far. Sorry, but I still don’t like the dress, and I would not like it on anyone. I find it so busy and distracting with that beadwork dizzying pattern, and is that a sort of vest on top that is flying away at the waist? Big fat no. On the other hand with her makeup and the better hair I find her almost pretty here whereas usually I don’t understand all the praise she gets for being beautiful.

I find it baffling that people want Alicia to win while at the same time saying Eddie shouldn’t – his performance in Danish Girl was great. (She was good too, but not better than him, and she is miscategorized). She gets credit for ambition and hustling, he gets criticized. Like anything else in life, I guess we are all biased by our own preferences and our minds are already made up about the issue. If she wins, good for her. She couldn’t be any more insufferable than JLaw.

    • Mary-Alic says:

I loved Redmayne in The Danish Girl. I actually loved him more in it than in The Theory of Everything. I wasn’t a huge fan of his until recently but his acting won me over. An elegant, subtle, yet powerful act of art. I am all for him to win another Oscar but don’t think it’s realistic with “poorLeo” in the mix. And I don’t mind Alicia winning one either.

  15. alice says:

I have nothing to say about Alicia.
But I do have a bit to share about Gina Rodriguez. My friend in LA waited on her and her team at some past awards event. She was terribly rude and smug with the people working there, and would switch faking smiles and being gentle when meeting famous people. being half Latina myself I always felt happy for her increasingly success. But my friend, who’d never dream of talking shit about anyone, was so shocked and disappointed. She also told me her team in particular were tacky and desperate for freebies.

    • Lama says:

Awww that is so disappointing. She’s one of my favorite TV actresses, and I like to support a fellow Latina. She looked genuinely nice to me, but she is an actress after all. Sounds like her success has gone to her head.

  16. Loladoesthehula says:

I don’t hate the dress. Her makeup looks great, she’s so beautiful in a natural, down to earth sort of way.
I’ve enjoyed her in the two films I’ve seen her in and I love her brazen ambition , but I really hope neither her nor Rooney win, the category fraud is beyond absurd.

  17. Meatball says:

She looks very nice from the neck up. To me it looks like a lot is going on with the dress. Doesn’t really suit her. I like her simple styles much better.

  18. BadAssCompass says:

I like this look, from afar, up close it seems to bohoish, which I’m not big fan of, except on some people, like Florence Welch. Alicia is so childlike in appearance it clashes in my mind with her public persona. Kind of reminds me of a hybrid between Leigton Meester and Keira Knightley.

  19. lila fowler says:

Stunning. I’m happy that she won. I do wonder if she would have won the Golden Globe had she been in that category for Danish Girl. We’ll never know. Onto SAG!

  20. lucy2 says:

I like Alicia’s dress, it’s unique and pretty.
Gina’s would be perfect in a different color.

  21. Insomniac says:

I don’t like the dress, but I like it on her if that makes any sense.

  22. Minxx says:

I can’t make up my mind if I like Alicia’s dress or not but it’s better than the tampon/apron dress she wore to the GGs. 😉 Her hair looks better though, less twee, more grown up. I hope she wins though category fraud is pretty clear when it comes to her and Mara. BTW, where is Mara?

  23. kri says:

Gina looks so beautiful. Her figure is amazing, nd her styling perfect! Also, I have mad, inexplicable passion for Katrantzou. God, I love her work.

  24. Farhi says:

I like everything original/ folksy, so yeah! for the dress. Don’t like the puffy hair.

  25. Elle says:

She looks VERY pretty. I will admit I am biased because I find Alicia really attractive in general.

  26. T says:

I honestly don’t get why some people don’t like Alicia Vikander. I think she’s lovely.

    • Guest says:

She doesn’t pee in sinks. Oh and she bangs Fassy. Full stop.
I love Alicia. Double full stop.

      • Kiki says:

I don’t like her because she takes herself way to serious… I don’t care about her and her “husband”.

  27. TreadStyle says:

This might be one of my favorite dresses on Alicia! I think one of my fav parts is the deep rich colors in this dress then next the actual style. It is so pretty and unique! I agree her hair and makeup work perfectly. I actually think Ginas dress looks great and is super flattering minus the color. The color ruins the whole look. It would look so much more sophisticated in a darker color maybe?

  28. FF says:

Alicia looks lovely but I feel LV will be rearing it’s hideous head for the Academy Awards and after party. Liked her hair up too. (I may be wrong but I feel Gina needs to find people comfortable dressing higher than a 0.)

I’d like to hope AV wins an Oscar or that Ex Machina at least picks up Most Original Screenplay but I feel like they’re angling for The Revenant (may it put Leo on a three-year hiatus if he wins please), The Big Short, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs. So she might have to be content celebrating Fassy’s win. And more of the usual ‘she’s using him’/’it’s because she’s so thirsty/awful/smug’ narrative commentary from these quarters is to be expected.

  29. Cordelia says:

Does she remind anyone else of Pippa Middleton?

  30. Yabby says:

she kills it every time. i just want to spend a day in alicia’s closet. effortlessly gorgeous.

  31. Edie says:

It looks like deconstructed butterfly wings and I love it! It’s the best thing she’s put on all season and hair up is a plus. I was not feeling especially optimistic after the London premiere of “The Danish Girl,” but this is the loveliest thus far.
