Kate Winslet on Leo DiCaprio’s shot at an Oscar: ‘Everyone wants it for him’

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have been friends for so many years. You might even say that excluding his mother, his relationship with Kate is the most long-standing relationship he’s ever had with a woman. They bonded while making Titanic, and Leo still talks about her fondly and refers to Kate as his “girl.” He gave her away when she married Ned RockNRoll (seriously!) and at the Golden Globes, Leo and Kate were apparently thick as thieves. So when Kate was asked about Leo’s Oscar chances and whether she was rooting for him or for her Steve Jobs costar Michael Fassbender, Kate had to be honest.

It’s Leo’s time! Kate Winslet is totally ready for her former Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio to win an Oscar — and she thinks 2016 is going to be his year.

The British actress, who played opposite the 41-year-old Oscar nominee as the Rose to his Jack Dawson in the 1997 blockbuster movie, told BBC News at Sunday, January 17’s London Critics Circle Film Awards that she (and the rest of the world) will be rooting for DiCaprio.

“I think you can sort of feel it, and I think that everyone wants it for him,” Winslet (who herself won the Best Supporting Actress gong at the awards ceremony) said. “It would be amazing.”

But while she admitted she would be very “surprised” if DiCaprio didn’t receive the recognition he deserves, Winslet did reveal her loyalties are slightly split as her Steve Jobs costar Michael Fassbender is also up for the Best Actor award.

“It’s slightly difficult for me too, because Michael Fassbender has been nominated, and I was his right-hand woman for three months while we were making Steve Jobs and I saw how hard he worked,” the actress admitted. “I think his performance is so extraordinary,” she went on. “But I think yeah, you can sort of feel the temperature. It’s probably going to be Leo’s year.”

[From Us Weekly]

I think if it was any other year and Kate didn’t have to shill for Steve Jobs, she would probably be actively directing Leo’s Oscar campaign. I’ve heard, over the years, that Kate is great at Oscar campaigns. Like, she’ll go to every industry screening, she’ll make sure that every voter gets a handshake and a photo, like she’s running for office. That’s why she walked away with an Oscar nomination this year – it’s not that she was all that great in Steve Jobs (she was not), it’s that the Academy members LOVE her and she’s a great campaigner. And I bet she is giving Leo some advice. She probably tried to give Fassbender some advice too, but he wasn’t into it.

Here are some photos of Kate at the London Critics Circle Awards on Sunday night. Her dress was basic and I honestly think she might have gotten a boob job?

I’m sure Cranston, Damon, Fassbender and Redmayne all have their fingers crossed for Leo.

  2. Yeses says:

I think Leo’s Oscar has been a long time coming, What’s eating Gilbert Grape, The Departed, Django Unchained…so many deserving roles….just watched The Revenant over the weekend, just give him the Oscar already, don’t even need a ceremony…just give it to him, he was so awesome in that role, regardless of what his activities may be off screen, the man is a fantastic actor!!

    • Jegede says:

I can’t believe how well its doe at the Box Office. (close to $100 million domestic already)

One of the few expanded ‘prestige projects’ that did not die on its ar$e.

    • Wilma says:

But people didn’t give him an oscar for those roles. And that’s what makes me wonder who’s going to vote for him. Does he have the pull he needs? Has he cultivated relationships with voters?

  3. Abbott says:

Yes, we all do want it for him… mostly so he’d stop with the full-tilt Hathaway begging.

    • yes yes no says:

Can you imagine Leo’s meltdown, though, if he DOESN’T win? I would feel like it would be epic and fascinating to watch, so I almost don’t want him to win.

  4. nches says:

Who remembers Kate’s acceptance speech for her golden globes that year? the one where she said she loves Leo so much. I hope when Leo wins this oscar, he says something similar about her…. and maybe she’ll leave rocknroll and realize that Leo is the one for her and then my heart will go on forever

    • Esmom says:

I do remember that. Although I can’t imagine them together, lol, they seem like very solid friends, nothing more.

    • TAM says:

Yes — I remember Kate’s GG speech when she pretty much professed her love for him.. If I were Sam Mendes, I would have felt a little awkward lol! And she hugged him first when her name was announced. Sam was just standing next to her waiting for his turn..

    • yes yes no says:

Kate Winslet is over the age of 22, though, and has never been an underwear model. She also has opinions and reads books. So, she’s doesn’t meet Leo’s criteria for a romantic connection. 🙁

  5. Jegede says:

He’s also godfather to one of her children.

When Kate’s first marriage to Jim Threaplehorn (sp) fell apart, there were many credible stories about how Kate was in very much (still) in love with Leo but had resigned herself to him only seeing her as a friend.

I do think she had a very soft spot for him beyond ‘just friends’ but has moved past it now.

  6. Christina says:

Leo gets a bad rep for the models but he’s very talented and seems like a good humanitarian

    • sunshine gold says:

I agree. But in terms of his dating life, sometimes it seems a little odd as he gets more accomplished and politically active that he still picks such unchallenging women. (Much like George Clooney, until Amal of course.)

  7. TAM says:

Leo should have won an Oscar for playing Arnie Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He is a good actor but I can only tolerate him when he’s partnered with Kate Winslet. I can’t stand how he talks, he still sounds like an adolescent boy.

  8. word says:

Personal life apart, this dude is a good actor. He probably should have won an Oscar a long time ago. I’m pretty sure this is his year.

  9. Miss Grace Jones says:

    I don’t.

  10. kibbles says:

I have a soft spot for Kate despite her many annoying statements in recent years, and I really cannot forget my love for Titanic when I was a teen, so I’m happy to see that she and Leo have remained good friends for nearly two decades. I am glad that they never became an item because they would have broken up long ago. Their love for each other as friends will endure well past any of Kate’s marriages or Leo’s flings. It would be nice though, especially for us Titanic fans, to see them together perhaps later in life if Leo ever decides to have a real relationship and stop dating models in their early 20s. Of course Kate is rooting for Leo and I wouldn’t be surprised if she is secretly pulling some strings for him with the Oscar voters.

  11. nn says:

Could you imagine if Bryan Cranston walked away with it…ooowwiiieee!! All those Oscar consultants for naught.

    • islandwalker says:

Make this happen just so people lose their minds.

    • SusanneToo says:

A few years ago Clooney had it locked up for The Descendents, then Jean Dujardin swooped in and oops! Could happen again.

      • Anne tommy says:

And some years ago Mickey Rourke had deservedly won everything pre-Oscar for his great turn in The Wrestler but Sean Penn got the Oscar for Milk. Hope Leo wins.

  12. Elle says:

I want it to go to Matt Damon. I know it won’t but I just like him more. And he has also been in the industry a long time and wrote Good Will Hunting with Ben- which was amazing! He was only ever nominated for that role as best actor before the Martian. It was only the second time he ever one a golden globe. I think that’s why he noted that the last time he won was almost 20 yrs ago. He wants it. And id prefer him over Leo. I know that Leo had an extreme role this year and has a very diverse list of acting roles/nominated numerous times.. I just don’t like him as much.

I do think the relationship between Leo&Kate is quite endearing actually..

    • Guest says:

That article is great. So I guess Alicia Vikander is going to win eh? Oh and yes…. it is Leo’s turn….

  13. Armenthrowup says:

Not everyone 😛 (Matt Damon FTW)

  14. Zaytabogota says:

I love Kate as an actress, she’s wonderful to watch. Her and Leo have great onscreen chemistry. They even made Revolutionary Road a good movie, it would have been tedious with most actors in the two leads.

It’s Leo’s year, he’d have to join isis to lose at this stage. It’s a long overdue award. He deserves it for the revenent and he should have received it for Wolf of Wall Street and several others. Brilliant actor and he doesn’t make movies just for the money, he obviously puts everything into the characters he plays and picks his movies wisely.

My favourite actor and actress. They should do another movie together.

  15. Chris says:

I have to disagree with ‘Leo is a talented actor”. I think he was very talented as a kid–Basketball Diaries and Gilbert Grape in particular. But now I think he’s just a great Movie Star. I may be alone on this, but I found his performance in The Departed (along with the whole movie) to be lackluster. The Revenant? Tedious-almost silly. Leo is HOLLYWOOD. And Hollywood looooves itself. So he will win. But I think he falls into the category of actors who live such a rare and privileged life, that they forget how to act. They are so removed from ordinary life, they have nothing to draw upon anymore.

    • Josefina says:

I agree. It’s not that Leo isn’t talented, but every movie he’s in, I see him ACT (capitals are necessary). You don’t see a character, you see Leo ACTING that character.

      Go Cranston!

  16. Ethelreda says:

Boob job? Nah. If anything her boobs look quite flat. She’s just squeezed into a dress at least one size too small for her.

  17. Abigail says:

Kate is campaigning for herself, primarily, putting in everyone’s mind the idea of a “Jack and Rose” reunion. She is adopting Leo’s narrative for why he’s due for the award. And she’s also selling out her co-star–notice the subtle shading of “I was his right-hand woman,” and “he worked so hard.” Really not very nice of her. I agree that her performance doesn’t deserve the oscar, and after this I hope she doesn’t get it.

    • Liquorice says:

She’s definitely overrated and I find her ballsy woman persona x 100 (“but it’s all for Leo) really hard to take, as always. I think she thinks it’s genuine, but god dang it, leave others some room to breathe.

  18. OTHER RENEE says:

I’m not included in the “everyone” thank you very much. Over inflated egomaniac. On the cover of Rolling Stone this week with a headline of how he is on a crusade to save the planet. Geesh! Those who beat him out deserved their wins.

    • SusanneToo says:

I saw that cover and laughed. He’s also covering Cowboys and Indians magazine currently. What’s next – Consumer Reports, Tiger Beat(yep, it’s still around)?

  19. Liquorice says:

She obviously did a good campaign for The Reader too, because she really wasn’t that good. I think curvy figures are nice but she’s looking chunky rather than that attractive curvy. Does she work out a lot? She looks like she could give Ronda Rousey a good box. Personally not my type of body but she’s looking very toned but a bit chunky.

    • Anne tommy says:

Agree re The Reader, it was a silly film and she wasn’t great in it. I think she isn’t looking as naturally pretty here, a bit hard and artificial I think.

  20. Nicky says:

Well, Leo is the best among the five nominated and it’s his time. I hope he wins all awards!
