Zac Efron skips the High School Musical Reunion, angers fans

Zac Efron and Robert De Niro show off slightly different physiques as they both go shirtless while filming a scene for 'Dirty Grandpa'

In “This might make you feel old” news, the Disney Channel phenomenon High School Musical is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. In celebration, the network is throwing a reunion of the original cast members for a special to air on Wednesday on the network. Some of the original cast members, including Monique Coleman, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale filmed the special on Saturday. Notably absent was Zac, who played basketball hero Troy Bolton in the original movie, which spawned 2 sequels. The 28-year-old actor filmed a video message for the special, but apparently that’s not enough for voracious HSM fans.

The guy is just trying to promote his upcoming “I’ll wait for Redbox” movie, Dirty Grandpa with (Academy Award winning) actor Robert De Niro (Oh, how the mighty have fallen…sigh…) and he can’t even post a picture to his Instagram account without getting bombarded by negative comments – and some thinly veiled threats – about his absence from the reunion special. Check out this comment (caps and lack of apostrophes courtesy of random HSM fan): “BOLTON, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ONCE A WILDCAT ALWAYS A WILDCAT. HELL NO I THOUGHT WE WERE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME MAN. IM SOARING AND FLYING TO COME STAB YOU IF YOU DONT GET TO THAT REUNION.” Egads.

Ashley Tisdale, Sharpay herself, posted a photo of some of her cast mates, including Corbin Bleu, Monique, Vanessa and Lucas Grabeel to her Twitter.

She later tweeted, “It’s so important that throughout success we remember where we came from. Always be grateful and always remain good people.” This tweet must have gotten the HSM fans frothing, so she quickly added, “Please don’t take my last tweet out of context. It’s strictly about my experience yesterday and how much I ❤️ them.”

I feel kind of bad for Zac. He’s busting his butt on a number of projects. In addition to Dirty Grandpa, he’s got 2 other projects being released this year, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. In addition, he is currently filming The Disaster Artist, James Franco’s behind-the-scenes look at the making of Tommy Wiseau’s cult classic The Room (which I honestly can’t wait to see). It’s not like he’s sitting around and counting his money. He’s a working actor, and more power to him, I say.

Hey, I am crossing my fingers tightly for a Spice Girls reunion (don’t hate), but am I going to flood Victoria Beckham’s Twitter feed with hate because she’s not going to take part? Nope. Wouldn’t anyway, because I’m 100% Team Ginger, but that’s another story. Zac isn’t discounting the career boost he got from HSM, he’s just a busy guy.

Eh, he could have filmed something, even a tiny bit. After all, HSM made his career. And his career isn’t all that either.

Also, did he have a nose job? Buzzfeed did a HSM where are they now and his nose is much smaller now. He was never attractive to me, but his old nose looked better.

    • mom2two says:

I agree. How hard would have been for him to film a 5 minute bit? HSM is what inflicted him upon the world, he should be thankful for that.
      Is Vanessa Hudgens involved?

    • Naya says:

Well, he couldnt film something because that would defeat the purpose of his not attending. That purpose being of course, to put distance between Zac Efron and High school musical. The “break out star” always does this. Always. And if these other actors had any chance of a “proper” career, they would probably do the same. I get it. But its still a major turnoff to witness.

    • Runcmc says:

It says right in the article that he did film something. Look at the end of the first paragraph.

Also that comment/”threat” is kinda hilarious. It has a bunch of HSM quotes in it so …I’m guessing the fan was joking, even if it’s dark humor:

      • Kate says:

He did film something, but poor Troy Bolton’s fans are freshman and sophomores in high school now ( I know, I have one lol) and they are bummed he won’t be there.
I told my daughter and her friend, when they said first One Direction is over now Troy won’t be at the reunion, that this is what happens. You wait for the reunion, thinking it’s going to be awesome and it’s just eh…. Take all the NSYNC fans, we’ll be waiting forever!! I’m looking at you Timberlake!!! Lol

    • K says:

The article says he filmed a video message he just didn’t attend. The man moved on, there is something seriously wrong with people that they won’t let people move on to where they are now. He made it, he has never said a negative word about high school musical, he filmed a video message what more do people want?

Honestly, do you feel beholden to your first job? I don’t, I speak highly of the company and experience but that’s it…same for these celebrities that make it big or move on.

  2. Original Kay says:

It’s funny but I seem to prefer him with his shirt on. He looks almost plastic chest.
Not that I should be looking I think I am old enough to be his mother. Gah!!

  3. Katie says:

Sounds like ashley and company are a little jealous that they’re are sitting around remembering the good times because they’ve not been doing much of note?

    • FLORC says:

Not sure how you got that. Reunions are only for the desperate? Friends can only post because they have nothing else going on? This is all PR for themselves and not a nod to old fans?

  4. Kate says:

The same thing is happening to Matthew Perry right now. The ‘Friends reunion’ isn’t even an actual reunion show, just a short segment where the cast will talk about TV director no one’s ever heard of, but apparently Perry’s supposed to ditch the play he wrote and stars in and run back to LA. It’s not enough that he’s filming something for it, people are tweeting him awful messages all day long because he won’t be in the same room as the other castmembers.

If these people were actually fans, they’d be happy to see their idols busy and working, not sending them abuse for failing to keep their schedules open for a reunion of an old project.

  5. Neelyo says:

Forced nostalgia makes me ill, especially when something is ten years old or less.

And if you’re getting upset that one of the cast members of a manufactured Disney kids’ musical isn’t attending the reunion, it’s time to re-evaluate your life choices.

    • Esmom says:

      LMAO. Well said.

    • Josefina says:

Oh please. People who grew up on HSM are, at best, just entering college right now. 10 years means half of their lives. Throwing shades at teenage kids for being stupid? Were you designing rockets and curing pollium at that age?

      • Jay says:

Kids entering college should absolutely give zero effs about a HSM reunion. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to think this is dumb.

      • Josefina says:

If HSM meant an important part of their childhoods why are they not allowed to care? They shouldn’t be threatening Zac, by why are they not allowed to be excited? Who are you to dictate what people should and shouldn’t care about?

    • Rachel says:

      Exactly! Thank you! 👏👏

  6. Mia4s says:

I laughed. A lot. Oh but then he had to go and post this:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/zacefron/status/689283451241889792

    He’s an idiot.

    • FLORC says:

I’d wager he wouldn’t know where MLKjr. Gave his speech.
Maybe sour grapes with his ex being there?

  7. Trinity says:

Error I always feel like people make too much a deal of these things… Who cares lol. If he’d said furk off then fhats different. I actually think for a pretty boy actor who took up predictable roles, he’s doing pretty well for himself. Zac pushed out 2-4 films a year. Not bad and typically they make money, minus his first big bomb last year. More offensive, Zacs tweet about MLK day and him equating it go him 10mill followers. That’s offensive.

  8. Esmom says:

The headline and the header photo are priceless together. Brilliant.

  9. Lucy2 says:

It be one thing if he was just blowing them off, but if he’s really busy and can’t make it, what else is he supposed to do?
The people getting that upset about this to the point of sending threats and nasty messages need to seriously look at themselves and their choices.

  10. Violet says:

Good lord. Surely these rampant fans from 10 years ago are actual adults now?

  11. Miss M says:

The disaster artist about the room?! I am watching it!

  12. fiona says:

That was 10 years ago? Ugh. I feel old now. I couldn’t believe my year level was obsessed with high school musical when it came out. I was 13 and thought it was for babies. Such a dumb movie. I thought only 5-10 year olds liked it.

  13. Snowflake says:

He is so hot! Yum! Yum! Why do people pose with their lips puckered up? Is it to make your lips look fuller and your cheeks slimmer? Looks silly to me.

  14. Josefina says:

People take celebrity gratitude so seriously. HSM was Zac’s kick-start but ultimately, it was his own efforts that made him build the career he has now. He’s not an A-lister but we can all agree he’s accomplished much more than Tisdale and Hudgens. He wouldn’t be where he is without HSM, but if HSM really was all of that, Hugens and Tisdale would be much bigger.

He won’t be at the reunion because he’s busy. Big deal, doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. Sometimes I have to skip a family member’s or friend’s birthday party because I simply have more important things to do. Doesn’t mean I don’t value them.
