Charlie Sheen’s daughters had to hear on the news that their dad had HIV

Denise Richards is fighting back after years of silently taking Charlie Sheen’s abuse. This woman has stayed admirably quiet up for so many years. In the very few interviews Denise has done about Charlie, even after his spectacular meltdown, she’s said that she’s worked to have a good relationship with him and that she’s tried to model friendly coparenting for the sake of their daughters. She’s been nothing but classy about the entire situation, even when Charlie’s teeth were out of his mouth and hookers were talking about the enormous checks he was cutting them and all the drugs Charlie was doing, Denise kept mum. Now she’s finally leaking some details to the press and they’re heartbreaking.

Denise apparently knew for some time that Charlie had HIV. According to details from her latest legal filing (as reported by Radar), he told her about his medical condition in order to get her to move down the street from him. However Charlie’s daughters didn’t know that their dad was sick and they found out the way everyone else did – from the news.

“When the HIV news came out, Charlie never told them. It broke when they were at school and Denise [Richards] didn’t even have a heads-up about it. She had to explain that issue much earlier than she anticipated,” says our source.

Learning their dad’s HIV status in the media isn’t the only humiliation the girls have endured during their parents’ tumultuous relationship. We’re told they were rejected from several private schools in LA because of Sheen’s past erratic behavior. Sheen has gone on Twitter attacks in the past against their former school, Viewpoint.

“They applied to 10 schools and weren’t accepted to any of them. The schools were concerned after the situation with Viewpoint. They didn’t want to take the risk and have something about their school in the media or if he were to lash out at another child,” said our insider. “The rejection was hard because they feel like they did something wrong. Charlie explained to them the reason they couldn’t get in was because of him.”

Sam and Lola have since been accepted to another school via a family connection, but are back in the spotlight after Richards filed a suit against their dad last week for allegedly evicting them from their Mulholland Estates home, which he gifted them in a trust. Richards rented a $15,000-a-month home near their school and is suing Sheen for $1.2 million.

A source close to Sheen told us the lawsuit comes “from Denise wanting more money. She owns a $7 million house in Hidden Hills, but she didn’t want to drive 20 minutes to the kids’ school, so she decided to rent a place closer.”

But a Richards source points out she had the home before she married Sheen: “Her house has nothing to do with the trust. It’s not a part of her divorce and it isn’t part of her settlement. It doesn’t matter if she has an apartment or 10 homes. He made a trust [for their kids] and that’s what he put in it.”

[From Page Six]

Earlier this week, sources close to Charlie told Page Six that Charlie still keeps in touch with his daughters and that he still sees them, but that Denise (rightfully) insists on being there. Despite everything that Charlie has done, Denise still lets him see his kids. So Charlie keeps in touch with his girls and with Denise. He knew when he was going to go to the press with his HIV diagnosis. He had to get ahead of The National Enquirer’s reporting, but he knew it was happening and he easily could have spoken to his daughters and given them some reassurance that he was getting treatment and is doing ok. Better yet, Charlie could have told Denise so that she could gently break the news to them before it came out. Instead, he let his 11 and 10-year-old daughters find out when they were in school. He probably did it just to hurt them, that’s the kind of terrible person he is. His girls are better off without him in their lives.

It’s worth noting that Charlie did tell his 30 year-old daughter about his HIV diagnosis a few days before he went public with the news. He even discussed with the press how he broke the news with her. So he easily could have told Denise the story was coming out and/or he could have sat down with his daughters. This was deliberate.

This photo below is of Charlie and his ex wife, Brooke Mueller, with Charlie’s daughters in 2007. Brooke is currently in rehab. She’s been in rehab over 20 times. (That’s not an exaggeration.)

I am going to say something terrible. The sooner Charlie Sheen departs this planet, the better off his kids will be.

    • Esmom says:

Terrible but true. He already looks embalmed. I honestly don’t know how he’s still functioning.

I’ve never even thought about how his behavior could affect things like the girls getting into the schools they want. That’s just horrible.

    • Christin says:

He’s the type that will probably live to be 90, and still be a pain to everyone in his path.

I keep forgetting about Cassandra. How is it she has managed to stay out of this cluster***.

  3. Christin says:

Yes, he should have provided advance notice before he went public. However, rumors were swirling for weeks before he made the announcement. He was the most popular guess for who the unnamed actor was.

Hard to believe Denise did not have any inkling, as several mainstream sites had articles about it. And even Charlie’s people gave notice a day or two prior to his interview. I think I would have put two and two together.

    • Tiffany says:

I think she knew as far back as 2011, which is why she moved in his neighborhood. He was manipulating the situation and snatched the rug from under Denise and the girls. The school situation is not helping matters and calling Charlie a a-hole is being kind.

      • Christin says:

What I meant is that she had to be aware that his big TV announcement would likely the diagnosis. The interview was publicized in advance, just not the subject matter.

It’s terrible if those young girls had to hear it at school, but that’s where I have to wonder why Denise did not realize what he would be revealing on national TV that day.

    • blahblahblah says:

Right, because the burden should be on Denise to somehow know or guess that Charlie Sheen was going to out himself without giving her a warning. What if she’d guessed wrong and told the kids when they didn’t need to know? Maybe she wanted to err on the side of caution for the well-being of her kids, especially given their likely conflicted feelings about their father.

Why do people fall all over themselves to find a way to blame Denise or hold her accountable for his being a total goddamned monster?

Most observers would not view Charlie as someone stable or capable of good judgment. That particular blind item about an actor having HIV and being forced out was on numerous mainstream sites for WEEKS, and Charlie was the common guess. His own publicist announced a blockbuster announcement as that rumor continued to gain momentum.

This account makes it sound like it was a total surprise. And it really wasn’t.

In this particular situation, Denise was either living under a rock or had her head in the sand. Just because he’s awful doesn’t mean she does everything perfectly.

It’s terrible those girls had to hear about their father at school, and who knows how it was described to them. I’m Team Kids on this one.

      • Bridget says:

No where does it say they learned about it from his Today Show interview, it could very well have been from one of the news reports leading up to it. And credible sites were only reporting on it for a couple of days beforehand, not weeks.

      • Christin says:

The NY Times recently published a timeline article. Reports started surfacing on a blog in 2014. The blogger ended up removing the posts, which caught the Enquirer’s attention. The latter was ready to go with the story in early 2015 (but waited until November).

The excerpt above says the girls found out ‘when the news broke’ identifying Charlie. That was the evening before the Today interview. Several outlets went ahead and identified him, after blinds had been floated for weeks. Those blinds were carried by reputable sites for at least 2 or 3 weeks (I read them at the time). The article even tells how the Enquirer was part of floating those blinds well in advance, to test the waters.

And lets not forget that Denise’s youngest daughter is really Charlie’s daughter with a hooker that Denise gracefully adopted to raise her with her 2 daughters. And also the the reason Denise why divorced him – She found child porn on his computers. So good for her for insisting on supervised visits.

  5. swedish chef says:

What’s happening with Charlie’s twin boys?

    • Esmom says:

I was wondering the same thing. I thought Denise sometimes cared for them but they seem conspicuously absent from this story.

    • Juliette says:

Apparently Brooke’s mother and brother are caring for them while she completes her 20th (or more) stint in rehab. They are all terrible people and those only ones I feel sorry for are the children and Denise. I agree they would all be better off without him in their lives at all, the psychological damage will take years to heal, if it ever does.

      Team Denise for life.

    • Naya says:

I hope they have a trust too although I seriously doubt it. If theres a trust, Brook and Charlie probably already broke it for crack money.

  6. swak says:

I don’t understand why Denise didn’t tell them sooner. Not when she first learned about it as they girls may have been too young to understand. But, unless Charlie was holding something over her, she could have told them last summer (2015) or sooner if she thought they could handle it. I’m not criticizing her for it, just trying to understand. We all do what we think is best.

    • lucy2 says:

She might not have known he was going to go on TV an announce it. I have to think if she knew, she would have told them so they weren’t blindsided.

    • Naya says:

Even assuming they are at an appropriate age to hear this news, thats still a pretty big secret to lay on a child. And Charlie had clearly made the decision to keep it private. Telling a child that their father who makes awful health choices now has a virus that could easily kill him given his lifestyle and then expecting them to not discuss it with anybody outside of the home, would be cruel imho.

    • justagirl says:

It wasn’t her story to tell, so I suspect she was being respectful of his wishes…it looks like she has always been careful to be respectful in this nasty impossible situation – an approach that is appreciated in custody disputes and reflects well on her.

And just revealing it would create so many questions. Much better to leave it to him to tell his kids, and to face their questions…and then after, when they still have questions she could address them.

    • serena says:

because they are so young and they could not understand, maybe she just wanted time to plan it (or Charlie didn’t want her to tell their daughters), we don’t know, but I don’t think she knew he was going to say it on tv.

    • Christin says:

When the blind item became a news story on multiple sites last fall, it was time for someone to step up, before they heard it at school. I cannot imagine how frightening and confusing it was for them.

Charlie should get the brunt of blame. Yet, given how the rumors were making into mainstream news, and then he was going on TV with a big announcement, I think Denise should have stepped up and told them something, however basic. She could have even kept them out of school that day, until it was clear what he was going to say in that interview.

  7. Lisa says:

At least with Denise keeping the “parental” visits going, being honest with her girls and allowing him to see them might prevent any future Daddy issues from ruining their lives. I feel so badly for his kids. To have everything so public, you need lots of stability to counteract his craziness. I can’t imagine what they must deal with because you know we don’t hear all of it.

  8. yep says:

A mom does whats best for her kids. She probably kept them as innocent as long as she could. And thats incredibly difficult in Hollyweird.
Discussing the HIV status of a father who has frightening, dangerous reactions to any situation, who wants to keep that secret…if the girls had mentioned it to dad, previously, it wouldve been catastrophic.
I see her decision. And i see who she is dealing with.

  9. miasys says:

I have nothing but sympathy and respect for Denise. I went through a very similar situation with my ex. The misery of having to explain that your father is gay to a six year old is only surpassed by the pain of getting protection orders and eventually telling your 12 year old son that his dad has AIDS. It sucks when your co-parent refuses to parent, communicate, or even act human. I shudder to think how much worse it could have been if my ex had any money.

  10. Bridget says:

She doesn’t “insist” on being there when the kids see Charlie, he has supervised visitation.

  11. Baba Ghanoush says:

All that money (when he does pay up) can’t make up for having that thing as a father. Luckily they have Denise, who seems like a great mom, except for her choice of a co-breeder.

  12. AntiBeiber says:

His daughters shouldn’t know about it at all – in the name of God they’re only little children. This idiot is wrecking lives left, right and centre without a care.

  13. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I think everyone should be EXTRA nice to those poor girls because 1) they’ve always looked traumatized, 2) their father is a POS.
