Above is a post which Uzo Aduba instagrammed with a side by side photo of her prom date (checking her Wiki – that might have been in 1999 as that’s when she graduated) and her SAGs date, Mark. Uzo took her good friend with her to the SAGs, where she took home the statue for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. This is Uzo’s second SAG in that category, she previously won in 2014, and she also has two Emmys for the role. And Orange is the New Black won for Best Comedy Ensemble for the second time too! Apparently Uzo’s date is a guy named Mark, they’ve been friends since they were little, and she’s still very close with him and posts photos of him all the time. Here’s US Magazine’s report on this:

The actress has shared several photos of Mark on her Instagram in the past, calling their long-lasting friendship “priceless.”
I went looking for more photos of Mark on Uzo’s Instagram and I found these photos from when they were kids and now. These are giving me 90s flashbacks. (Do you guys watch The Goldbergs? I know that show is set in the 80s but these photos are reminding me of it.)
These are the cutest. I need to dig through the pictures at my mom’s house for more photos from when I was a kid. Can you imagine how many pictures this generation of kids will have of their childhood? It’s going to be incredible.
Uzo also tweeted a clip from her Dateline interview earlier last month. This aired on January 9th but I’m just hearing this now. Uzo talked about the gap in her teeth, her diastema, and said that when she was a teen she wanted to get braces but that her mother, who is Nigerian, told her it was a sign of beauty in Nigeria and runs in their family. I love how she imitates her mom’s fancy accent. She also has such an infectious enthusiasm and is a superb actress. I’m looking forward to seeing much more from Uzo.

I liked the story about the gap in her front teeth, too. I’ve got the same gappy teeth my mother had, so that even though she’s been gone 20 yrs, I still see her in the mirror everyday.
My mom has a gap, too, which is almost closed up now that she’s in her 70s, oddly. I had one too but alas she allowed me to get it fixed (it only took wearing a retainer for about a year to close it up) since I was so self conscious about it. She tried to convince me to keep it, citing Lauren Hutton as the ideal of beauty but I didn’t buy it. I just wanted to fit in without being teased. Sigh.
I have a minor gap, and I jam toothpicks in it when I’m sitting around or reading or whatever to help keep it from closing up. Reverse braces.
She seems to be an awesome lady, and I’m very happy for all of her success.

Not all African cultures, although many do. Where my dad is originally from, they used to file down a fragment of cow horn and used it to plug the gap. But of course Uzo is beautiful, gap and all.

“infectious enthusiasm” is great way to describe Uzo’s appeal. There are some actresses that are overly bubbly and are completely annoying. But not Uzo. You just can’t help but to like her. Maybe because she comes across as authentic.
