Tom Brady was the only MVP to get booed at the Super Bowl: sad or funny?

I honestly didn’t know it was thing, but apparently the NFL decided to celebrate 50 years of Super Bowls by bringing out Super Bowl MVPs of years past. Which meant that there were some star athletes past and present at the Super Bowl. Including Tom Brady. Tom was called out along with the other MVPs ahead of the game, and when he walked onto the field, the crowd booed the hell out of him. It was kind of funny. As Sports Illustrated reminded me, Tom grew up in California, and he attended lots of 49ers games as a kid. But Frisco HATES him. Yahoo also pointed out that Tom was the only MVP to get booed by the crowd.

Here’s the NFL’s video. If you just want to see Brady get his ass booed, skip ahead to the 6-minute mark. San Francisco really hates him.

Here’s a Vine of Brady getting booed, although you can’t hear it as well.

Ohhh, the hateration in that dancerie! LOL. I can’t stand him or his wife. Ugh.

    • Lama Bean says:

😂😂😂 hateration in the dancerie? Excellent use of MJB.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

      Kri,

I agree with you completely, except in my case, I actually despise Bunchen even more than Brady. At least, Tom has talent.

As for Brady being booed? It came as no surprise and I had a huge New York Giants grin on my face. 😉

  2. Lurker says:

I laughed out loud when it happened.

    • Lucky says:

Me too. He’s such an arrogant SOB. I am a huge Giants fan so I’ve been watching a lot of Super Bowl 42 & 46 shows. He acted like such a jerk in both those games

      • InVain says:

I’m sitting right next to you Lucky. Big Blue for life!! He’s such an ass.

      • doofus says:

people I watched with last night were drawing parallels with his reactions in those games to Cam in last night’s game.

as in, both he and Cam expected to win and kinda fell apart when they didn’t. entitlement can kill your game.

though I’d disagree that Brady fully “fell apart” in the two SB losses against the Giants, I do agree that entitlement probably had something to do with it and his “I can’t believe I’m losing!” face was easy to spot.

the REAL arrogance displayed, IMO, was that of Belicheat. the way he ran off the field before the clock even ran out?…way to steal the other team’s (win) thunder by behaving like a sore loser.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

        Doofus,

Bellicheat is another example of poor sportsmanship, and imho, a snake in the grass.

As for Brady, I guess he couldn’t believe that he lost to our team at the hands of Eli.

    • Karen says:

+1. He must have been pissed being in the audience this year. There are many reasons to dislike him, but I have noticed that when his players miss one of his passes he gives them a dirty look. That is unprofessional. And also the famous Giselle interview when she complained that the Patriots lost because Tom’s teammates couldn’t catch the ball.

      • lilacflowers says:

That was not an interview. Giselle and Bianca Wilfork were being harassed by Giants fans while trying to leave the stadium and she responded to one of the ruder jerks.

      • Dani says:

As a Colts fan I automatically dislike the Patriots and Tom Brady makes me completely unapologetic about doing so. He is unlikable and childish.

      • Karen says:

Being a Giants fan, I don’t care! Best win ever.

Anyway, she has been in the public for years and should have known how to handle herself. She creates another layer of drama for the Brady haters.

      • what says:

Karen: Wow! You are so ignorant.
Famous Giselle interview? Famous? That WASN’T an interview!
“Being a Giants fan, I don’t care! Best win ever.” Of course you don’t care. But you should. You are a woman. It was childish and rude. You don’t like her and you don’t know WHY.

  3. Tate says:

It made me laugh but I am sure it barely touched his tremendous ego.

  4. jc126 says:

He has four rings. It’s jealousy.

    • H says:

Joe Montana has four rings and no one hates him. It’s not jealousy.

      • Tate says:

        Bingo

      • jc126 says:

Nonsense – if they did this when Brady was retired, he wouldn’t have been booed. He’s STILL out there beating other teams.

      • Lurker says:

Yeah right. Brady won’t ever become beloved.

      • georgia says:

Lots of people hate Joe Montana because he’s a lousy tipper.

      • yes yes no says:

I love the Patriots and Tom Brady (it’s a sickness, I know), but Brady will never become beloved outside of New England. He’s too arrogant, and he’s not charismatic enough to make his massive ego palatable.

      • Scal says:

Terry Bradshaw has four rings to, and I didn’t see him getting booed.

People just don’t like the Pats. They are this era’s Dallas Cowboys.

      • V4Real says:

” He’s STILL out there beating other teams.’

Yet it was The Panthers and the Broncos in the Super Bowl. 🙂

    • Jess says:

      He’s a cheater.

    • Dani says:

Why would fans be jealous. We aren’t all little Eli Manning’s out there pretending to cheer. Football fans love the greats (!!!!) even if they are still playing. Everyone is talking about Cam Newton’s apparent unsportsmanlike behavior at the post game breakdown but Brady has an entire career of sulking and cheating rumors to overcome. He comes across as a DB QB who doesn’t have the benefit of blaming it on youth and inexperience.

    • iheartgossip says:

Why oh Why do certain types ALWAYS drop to the lowest denominator – you jealous. People can dislike others without jealously being involved. Hater. Jealous. Ugly. It’s where ‘certain’ types always go cause they have zero other argument.

      • jc126 says:

Probably because commenters can’t cite something concrete to hate Brady for? You can say “he’s a cheater” all you want, but the judge overturned his suspension, nor can you point to any instance of him cheating. Plus even this year, with the NFL LOOKING for problems, he was still awesome. So what’s to dislike him for? At least some people admit it’s because the Pats beat their teams.

      • Melanie says:

Football is not my game. I know next to nothing about it. So when I say I hate Tom Brady, jealousy has nothing to do with it. I only know him from gossip columns. He has a punchable face, he comes off smug and utterly fake. And I thought it was really shitty the way he dumped Bridget Moynahan. He was cheating on Giselle and Bridget at the same time. When people call him a cheater nowadays, I know why. But my first thoughts always the Briget thing. Those are my reasons for hating him.

Iheartgossip, I agree with everything you said.

      • jc126 says:

If you follow gossip so closely, you should know that Bridget M and Tom announced a breakup before he was dating Gisele. “Hate” is a pretty strong emotion to have towards a guy in a sport you don’t follow.

  5. Eliz says:

Lame. Not to mention poor sportsmanship, which is obviously lacking these days.

    • annaloo. says:

Absolutely. I think the lack of respect shown these days in public settings is horrible. It’s everywhere: politics, schools, sports… In this case, it displays a lack of grace and sportsmanship.

      • Eliz says:

Yeah I’m not a Pats fan but I appreciate the team and Brady as well. First rule of ball: Don’t hate the player. End of.

    • erika1985 says:

Agree. Disrespectful. Like him or not, there is no denying Brady is one of the greatest QBs ever. He deserves better.

    • Embee says:

      Yes! Thank you.

      • Bonnie says:

        Preach. #GOAT

      • Casi says:

Better than most people want to admit because if you’re not a Patriots fan, he’s just not very likable? Definitely.

GOAT? There are a LOT of quarterbacks in that conversation and I don’ t think that he’s at the top of this list.

      • Robin says:

He’s nowhere near the GOAT. He’s an outstanding pocket passer. But if he’s pressured and has to scramble, he’s just average, and he is NOT a running QB. He’s one-dimensional.

  6. H says:

Besides Giselle and a few random Patriot fans, I don’t think anyone likes Tom.

  7. Catwoman says:

I bet that reception really deflated what was left of his balls.

  8. Miss M says:

Tacky and disrespectful. I did not know people from “first world” countries didn’t have manners.

    • Kitten says:

American sports are really ugly like that, though. Brady smiled throughout, handling it like a pro.

      • dAsh says:

Sports fans can be so rude and lame sometimes. They dislike the guy for being good in football so they resort with booing? Bitter.

    • Belle says:

Agreed 100%, this was rude and distasteful and didn’t inspire any desire to laugh out loud,

  9. Les Kat says:

I laughed because I knew it was going to happen, especially when he came out with sunglasses on and didn’t stop to acknowledge the crowd or camera. He looked like a douche canoe and he got the reception he deserved!

    • negave says:

“and didn’t stop to acknowledge the crowd or camera…” What? Are you blind? Look at that pic!

  10. Marin says:

He was booed the loudest, but other players (Deion Branch, Joe Flacco) were definitely booed, too.

    • noway says:

Yes there were other not as loud boos, and it was pretty rude. No matter what you think of the person it was before the game honoring the living super bowl MVP’s people need to get a grip and get over it. If you don’t like the guy don’t clap as loud, but don’t boo at a celebratory ceremony.

      • lucy2 says:

I agree – I don’t like him or the Pats, but save the booing for a game when he’s playing your team – not at an event honoring the past MVPS like this.

  11. Laura says:

I thought it was great & my Patriots/Brady loving friend also loved it. She said the Boos gave her life & “haters gonna hate”.

  12. Nancy says:

I don’t like him but booing a champion when he is being honored is tacky.

  13. Sharra55 says:

I despise Tom Brady, but come on…Booing the guy! I really don’t like that.

    • mom2two says:

I don’t despise Tom Brady, but agree, booing him is tacky.

    • Robin says:

I don’t like him, either as a player or from what I know of him outside of the game, but booing any of those guys was just tacky and rude. If you don’t like him, fine, don’t applaud or cheer, but don’t boo either.

    • Robin says:

I don’t like him, either as a player or from what I know of him outside of the game, but booing any of those guys was just tacky and rude. If you don’t like him, fine, don’t applaud or cheer, but don’t boo either.

  14. Jill says:

He wasn’t the only one – the other Patriot fella was also booed right after him. It was more of a Patriot thing than personal against Brady. Recognizing of course that Brady IS the Patriots…what’s the old saying in the NFL – “I only cheer for two teams, the one I love and anyone playing against the Patriots”… – I am pretty sure Brady will be able to survive. And as a fan myself I thought it was funny. Totally appropriate and as good natured as rivalries can be….

  15. InvaderTak says:

Not sad or funny. TOTALLY DESERVED

  16. anonypuss says:

He was NOT the only former MVP booed — the other recent Patriots guy and the Seahawks player were too. He definitely received the loudest booing; I hope it was commentary on his Eurotrash styling.

It was disappointing that the SB crowd didn’t cheer/applaud all of these men, since it was amazing they could be gathered together to be honored.

    • Kitten says:

      Lol @ “eurotrash styling”. 😂

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I was expecting him for some reason to have a better hairstyle & clothes, you know because of Gisele. But I think he looked sooo bad, was his stylist or anyone close to him on vacations?

      • Locke Lamora says:

Did he ever have a decent haircut? Every picture I’ve seen of him he has awful hair. This isn’t even the worst, one. His face also doesn’t help.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

Not really now that I think about it, but Gisele could’ve spared him some nice clothes. At least a better fitting suit, in my mind they were booing because of his suit & hair.

  17. KJ says:

The booing was tacky as hell, but he looked like he actually liked it. I think he kind of gets off on being a “heel” at this point.

In any event, he wasn’t the only one who got booed. His Patriots teammate Deion Branch was booed, as were Baltimore Ravens Joe Flacco and Ray Lewis. Considering that the stadium was full of Broncos fans, I wasn’t surprised that they booed MVPs from their conference rivals. It seemed like the wrong time and place, though, considering the occasion and how awesome it was to see all those MVPs together that way.

  18. CornyBlue says:

He looks good with sunglasses on. His looks like a bald eagle’s.. looking two ways and confused.

  19. Colette says:

As others have said ,he wasn’t the only one booed but I’m sure the headline will stay.Tom didn’t look bothered. It will probably motivate him for next season.

  20. Christina says:

Joe flacco wasn’t booed. Ray Lewis was because he’s a murderer. People either like flacco or are meh about him. Brady was booed the loudest and then Deion branch cause he’s a former patriot

  21. jc126 says:

“Ignore the boos. They usually come from the cheap seats.”

  22. Michelle says:

I cannot stand Tom Brady at all, but he should not have been booed at this. He is a so-so QB in my book. He may have the numbers that previous QB’s don’t have, but what he doesn’t have is class. Walking out there with no tie on when just about all the others (at least the ones before him) all had on ties. You are not the supermodel, your wife is. Dress like a man and not some douche playboy.

  23. zinjojo says:

Kaiser, I love you, but don’t call it “Frisco”. No one in San Francisco calls the city Frisco, and it’s only tourists who do. Call it SF, San Fran, or the city (which is how it’s referred to in the Bay Area), but never, ever Frisco.

Okay, got that off my chest.

    • Birdix says:

Ack! Don’t call it San Fran, that’s worse than Frisco. And the game was not in or near San Francisco, it’s was 45 miles away, closer to San Jose, so saying that San Francisco hates Brady is a stretch. I knew all of two people who went to the game–that was not a local crowd.
That said, he looked so fancy, like the editor of Hamptons magazine showing up at the game. It made me laugh, the open shirt and artfully ruffled hair.

      • zinjojo says:

HA! You’re right, San Fran is bad too so strike that, and keep it to SF or the city.

And I hear you about the Santa Clara game — despite SF being taken over by armed-to-the-teeth police, drunken crowds, shut down streets and a crazy airport scene — the game is not in or near San Francisco, but much closer to San Jose.

      • Birdix says:

Yes! I avoided downtown as much as possible. But anything west of Van Ness was totally fine, so much so that a friend said she felt like there was a huge party that no one living here was invited too –in short, they can’t win!

  24. Lbliss says:

It’s called payback for thinking he was above NFL regulations to reflate NFL footballs for NFL games. And getting a slap on the wrist for it, and not following through on the game restrictions and fighting the penalty, was the nail in the coffin as far as I’m concerned. How arrogant do you have to be to deliberately tamper with the single most important item in your sport to give you an advantage? It’s called cheating.

    • jc126 says:

Why, because innocent people WOULDN’T fight the accusations?
Do you dislike Peyton Manning because of the HGH scandal?

      • Delta Juliet says:

The difference is, the ball situation was all over the place. You hardly heard boo about Peyton’s HGH situation.

  25. Wren says:

Slightly off topic, but Frisco is in Texas. There is no such place in California. If you must abreviate the admittedly long name of San Francisco, it is SF.

    *End Bay Area native rant*

  26. EOA says:

Go ahead and keep booing. It will only give the Patriots bulletin board fodder for next season.

  27. lile says:

Shows what his peers think of him. Personally, I think he is a disgrace to the game.

    • lucy2 says:

It wasn’t his peers. I don’t know what other NFL players think of him, but it was the fans doing the booing.

  28. Jaded says:

I’m surprised some enterprising camera person didn’t find Giselle stamping her expensively shod foot and blaming the rest of the team for it.

  29. Daria Morgendorffer says:

I don’t really think it’s funny to boo a champion when he is being honored, but this kind of behavior is pretty common at sports events, at least in some areas. For example, Eagles fans are notoriously awful, famous for attacking the fans of other teams and throwing things onto the field.

People might not like Brady off the field because they think he’s cocky or whatever else and that’s fine, but credit needs to be given where it’s due. He’s an excellent QB and always has been.

    • mp says:

Daria, I was just about to write the same thing about the Eagles and how they built an in-stadium jail bc their fans are so bad.

And at Jets Games it is a half-time ritual that men stand with their sons to holler at women and ask them to show their t*ts.

Yikes. I guess I’m not surprised they booed Brady.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah, the Eagles fans can be pretty bad, and not just to the opposing team. Some family members have season tickets near the locker room tunnel and I’ve gone a few times, and if things are going bad, there’s a lot of yelling at the Eagles players too.
I think most of it is alcohol related, given the pre-game tailgating and in stadium beer purchasing that I’ve seen.

  30. Anon says:

A show of ignorance. I agree love him or hate him he is one of the all time best to play the game. Sad society.

  31. me says:

I laughed at the ones who couldn’t remember they were supposed to stop on the yellow dot, smile and wave, and then go ahead.

  32. Eden75 says:

I think his an ass but I cannot imagine booing anyone at something like this. Actually, I can’t imagine booing anyone at anything, unless it’s the Rocky Horror Picture Show and I’m suppose too.

My dad always has an etiquette for sports and booing a player would get my ass kicked. Always remove your hat for the anthem, stay still and sing politely, never boo the teams/players, this is their job, and never ever throw things at the field/ice/pitch. Also, while you may disagree with the ref’s, remember that they get paid jacksh*t and will be taking sh*t from player/coaches/owners, etc, so never be rude to them either.

    Classless. Very classless.

  33. Ya think maybe they booed him for hanging out with assfleck?

  34. Pants says:

Brady is a tool, it’s no wonder he got booed.

  35. feebee says:

All in good fun. I doubt he’s going to lose any sleep over it. He’ll kiss his four rings good night and jump into bed with his supermodel wife.

  36. Homework says:

Ms. Manners says you are allowed to boo at the opera, so sorry, football folks. Booing is allowed here, especially if you believe there is sufficient evidence he is a cheater.

  37. geneva says:

It makes you wonder..boo-ing Brady…reveling in the greatness of Peyton Manning but in the cold light of day will there be more to this human growth hormone scandal. To me that is so much worse. Brady is intense as is his coach. He has challenged a scandal and is still working at exonerating his name. Watching him play football every Saturday is unparalleled because they play such incredibly intelligent football. Brady shows up at every charity event, etc. as a perfect gentleman. He is very saavy and smart…It seems a strange target of hatred and booing. Booing is always in bad taste…but to be honest if you know Brady as a fan of his committment to the game of football..you know for sure that the booing hit hard. He didn’t let it show but it did.

    • jc126 says:

Oh, didn’t you read the other comments?? Btady’s a snob! Or something. Peyton’s rep -Ari Fleishcer – acknowledged that the company named in the Al Jazeera report shipped a package to Manning’s wife, but nothing to see here.
Personally I don’t call if old PM used HGH. It’s the difference in the press coverage between him and TB that is ridiculous.

  38. Millie says:

Why was Brady so cool to wear sunglasses? That stuck out to me. Dumb

  39. Kelly says:

Well Brady was booed much louder than any of them and its sad. I assume mostly by Denver fans based on what I have seen online. I don’t think the other players hate him, in a recent confidential NFL survey for ESPN Brady was voted the QB players want with the SuperBowl on the the line and the one player you would want on your team. Sorry but when you cheer even alittle for Ray Lewis who almost went jail for something to do with a murder and then boo Brady it shows how ridiculous you are.

I think Michael Strahan a former Giant who beat Brady in the SuperBowl summed it up nicely on his twitter account.

Gotta love how Brady walked out. Dudes a stud. Lol

    then

People love to boo Brady but secretly wish they had him as their QB! If people are hating you for success then you’re doing something right!

  40. Cheeky Squirrel says:

Unfortunately, he’ll always have the cloud of being a cheater (even though he’s rightfully talented and never needed to deflate anything except his ego). Would any team take him as a QB? Definitely, because he’s going to bring you closer to winning. But, his pristine legacy is straight up screwed.

  41. SwanLake says:

He’s a talented quarterback according to people who know. He set my low opinion of him when it was reported in the sports press that he and Gisele declined to attend the Patriot’s team party after the first SB loss to the Giants and when a few weeks later he snubbed Eli and Abby Manning at an event in New York. It seems that Eli spoke and Tom refused to acknowledge him.

  42. Stella in NH says:

Tom has four Super Bowl Rings. What NFL player as the same or more? No one. The NFL and Roger Godell screwed with Tom and his reputation. They are the ones to be booed. All those losers who booed would be thrilled if Tom was on their team. They are nothing but classless jerks.

  43. Emily C. says:

He can dry his tears with his massive stacks of money that he earned by playing a game. Seriously, poor Tom Brady is how we’re going now? Just because he got booed by people who are fans of a rival team? Oh poor little incredibly wealthy and healthy man with a beautiful wife, however will he cope.

  44. Heather says:

Tom was not the only MVP who got booed – the Broncos fans booed everyone who was still playing football, EXCEPT their players. It was utterly classless. They even booed Aaron Rogers – who doesn’t like him????? I mean, it was ridiculous and rude. But then again, Broncos fans boo their own players when they are losing a game, so I guess it comes with the territory. I cringed this year when they were booing Peyton back before he got yanked from all the last games.

I’m actually shocked that any news agency is saying Tom was the only one booed. Were you not watching the same game I was? They literally booed everyone who is an active player.

  45. Kori says:

As a Colts fan I loathe Pats with the passion of a 1000 suns and as a Manning devotee that goes for Brady as well. But I thought the booing at an event celebrating the sport and those who play it was childish and disrespectful. But I thought I heard 2 other boos and so did my hubby–at the time not afterwards reading about it–Ray Lewis and Deion Branch (also a Pat).

  46. TOPgirl says:

I think Tom is a great player and people are so full of crap to boo him.

  47. maryquitecontrary says:

Well, I am NOT a fan of the Patriots franchise, or Tom Brady. But he is the GOAT. We can’t really deny it…despite cheating scandals, did he / didn’t he, etc. He’s surpassed the records of those before him. Like it or not, the man has engineered some insane comeback wins and scoring drives that, as a football fanatic, are pretty amazing. During his time in the sport, he HAS been better than the rest, much as it pains me to say. Give him the credit for that, but understand that he is a polarizing figure because of his success / the success of his franchise in the Belichick / Brady era.

All that being said, those boos brought me some personal joy. I am small minded that way. 🙂

  48. HeyThere! says:

Pats have never been my team. I gasped when he was booed but as soon as he laughed and smiled, I did! He knows nobody likes him and most of the time it’s nothing personal, it’s the game! That being said, he didn’t deserve it. He’s married to a supermodel, has MILLIONS of dollars and four Super Bowl rings….he’s sleeping just fine at night! Don’t worry about TB!

  49. Bobafelty says:

Tom Brady has a monster head. Boooo!!

  50. Meg says:

I remember hearing a story about Dale Earnhardt and his thoughts when fans booed him at racetracks…he said something along the lines that, when the crowd stops booing is when you should be worried because you are either no longer great, or no one cares enough to boo you anymore. Plus, this only fuels Tom! I always want Tommy to have a chip on his shoulder always!

  51. Anare says:

I watched the Super Bowl in Mexico and Tom Brady got roundly boo’d there too. We just laughed. Nobody can stand him!
