Duchess Kate spent more than $4300 going back & forth from Anmer to London

wenn23461292

When the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out on Sunday, many of us wondered what was up with her. She looked really tired, and some people thought she looked hungover. Her harsh makeup didn’t help matters at all. So much so that the Daily Mail had a bitchy, faux-concerned story about Kate’s eyebrows. The piece is called: “What has Kate done to her eyebrows? She can’t leave them alone! But critics say the results are unflattering – and ageing.” Kate is attempting the “power brow” or a thick, heavy brow that comes from powders and pencils. Kate’s brows are close to being “Scouse Brows” as they’re known in the UK. Anyway, you can see the Daily Mail piece here, they have a great side-by-side comparison of Kate’s brows through the years. Just like her hair, her brows manage to get thicker every year.

Meanwhile, guess how Kate got to London for her big Air Cadets event? By royal helicopter at a cost of £3,000. It wouldn’t be so notable except that the Queen made the same journey by train at a cost of £54.90.

Looking chic in a grey coat flecked with sequins, the Queen arrived in London today after her extended Christmas break in Norfolk on a scheduled train service. The cost of her first class ticket? £54.90 for a one hour 40-minute journey. Quite a contrast, then, to the Duchess of Cambridge who made the same journey by helicopter on Sunday with a return cost to the taxpayer of around £3,000.

While the two trips aren’t entirely comparable – not least because Kate made the journey to and from Anmer Hall, the mansion she shares with Prince William on the Queen’s Sandringham estate, on the same day – the difference between their modes of transport is certainly notable. On Sunday Kate, 34, was attending a service in London to mark the 75th anniversary of the Air Training Corps, her first engagement as its Honorary Air Commandant.

It is understood she took the Queen’s Flight, the distinctive burgundy helicopter used by members of the Royal Family on official engagements. It is paid for from money given to the Queen by the Government to fund her official duties as head of state. The aircraft landed at Kensington Palace, Kate and William’s London residence, allowing Kate time to change into an Alexander McQueen suit and Lock & Co hat before heading to the engagement for 11am.

The 110-mile flight would take around 45 minutes. The helicopter was then seen taking off again after the engagement had concluded at 1pm, Kate having changed into a more casual outfit for travelling.

[From The Daily Mail]

I understand why British people have such affection for their Queen – she really does seem to keep her eye on the finances and she seems genuinely interested in thrift. I really don’t understand how the Queen thinks taking the train is perfectly fine and safe, and yet Kate NEEDED to take the helicopter to and from London. Surely the royal protection officers would be more concerned about the Queen’s safety than Kate’s? And if the Queen is perfectly safe on the train, then Kate should be too. It just goes to what I’ve always said about William and Kate: they spend money out of boredom and because no one is telling them “no.”

Last royal story… Will and Kate had a date night on Monday. William had the “night off” from the air ambulance, so they went out to a pub in East Rudham. The pub? The Crown Inn. Kate apparently wore skinny jeans a navy sweater. Kate drank water and William had white wine.

Time to buy her a train/bus pass.

    • anne_000 says:

But public transport is so…. déclassé! How very middle class to travel on such. But oops, wasn’t it reported that ‘middle class values’ was the greatest thing that Kate and the Middletons brought into William’s life?

    • laura says:

Funny, if you book in advance the train from London to Norfolk is £8 one way or £15 first class….

      • Citresse says:

That price seems very reasonable when you consider it averages close to a 200 dollar fare to travel business class on via rail from Toronto to Ottawa.

  2. Zapp Brannigan says:

Duchess Kate spent nothing, the taxpayer did and they are getting a poor return on this investment.

    • anne_000 says:

      Yup, and love your name.

It cost the taxpayers $4500 plus whatever her attire and hair cost just for her to ‘work’ two hours. So that’s $2250 per hour at the very least.

      I wonder if it was $4500 one-way?

    • MinnFinn says:

Zapp – So sad, isn’t it.

At this point, there is little hope of her having any meaningful impact on her charities which means her charities would benefit more if she stayed home and BP donated the expense for her visits directly to them.

Give her $20k for hair and clothes in exchange for showing up for Remembrance Sunday, Trooping and Christmas Day walk to church. She does not do any other events. Donate directly to her charities, what she would have spent on her hair, clothes and heli for the year. That is easily $80k directly to her charities. Everybody wins.

      • paddingtonjr says:

+1,000. Put her name on the cheque and then she can say she’s helping. Didn’t she (Poor Jason) say she was “energized” and wanted something on the books every week? That lasted about as long as my New Year’s resolutions.

  3. Megan says:

But she had to get back to her kids… Because no one can take care of them except her… Eye roll

    • anne_000 says:

Yup, and those two hours she saved using a copter were two vital hours the kids needed so that they wouldn’t forget what their mommy looked like.

    • MinnFinn says:

I figured she wanted to get back because Willy was not working.

  4. anniefannie says:

I would feel total shame knowing my 90 year old mother in law was kreptsing on a train while I swoop in on a heli!! The optics on that couldn’t possibly be worse.
    on a superficial note:
The brows are really overwhelming. I’m not sure about the shape but I’m certain she needs to go lighter.

    • CG says:

I love how the Mail focuses only on her eyebrows and makes absolutely no mention of all the other work (veneers, nose jobs, Botox, etc) she’s had done over the years. You can plainly see in their college-to-now timeline of pics how different her face looks. And no, it’s not just aging/losing baby fat!0

    • ArtHistorian says:

I’m curious: what does “kreptsing” mean and where does this expression come from?

  5. Original Kay says:

Some days kate makes it difficult to be an apologist. This is one such day.

    • Nikki says:

Yup, ORIGINAL KAY, I’m with you. So many times I think folks here are way too harsh on Kate, but I’ll join the pack of wolves on this one! I hope she learns a lesson from this; it makes her look soooo bad. I love the Queen…

    • HappyMom says:

Yes. I excused her for a long time-and William too-and I still think people on here are overly critical. I gave her a pass for a few years, and I do believe with small kids her schedule can be “lighter”-but now it’s just gotten too much to excuse. When you compare their work ethic with the Queen and Prince Philip, it is shameful.

    • Larissa says:

Here previous engagement according to the court circular was in the middle of December. So Kate has actually been on a vacation for 6-7 weeks. The few extra hours now for commuting wouldn’t have killed her.

  6. Nikki says:

Wait: William had wine but Kate only had water? Why isn’t the story she’s pregnant? (sorry; too used to tabloids here!)

    • Karen says:

She almost always drinks water in public. The only time I remember them saying she drank was right before Charlotte pregnancy was announced.

I assume the water is so it stops rumors….”she always drinks water, so she’s not suddenly stopping her wine guzzling because of baby.” Or it could be an empty calorie thing. She strikes me as a very strict dieter.

      • Jaded says:

She’s actually has always been a light drinker. During her party girl phase she clubbed too much like all twenty-somethings but it was a phase. In fact she has been credited for bringing Normal Bill back to drinking sensibly after years of putting up with him getting trashed regularly. That being said, I’m no Kate apologist and think she’s a lazy-arsed airhead, but she’s not a wine guzzler at all.

      • notasugarhere says:

Hence the many bottles of wine and frozen pizza in her cart one of the few times she was papped shopping in Wales. During one of their light events on the Australia tour she talked about how much she likes wine. She didn’t blink when downing one of the strongest whiskeys on the menu when they visited a whiskey factory in the UK. She’s not a teetotaler.

    • Elizabeth says:

I picked up on that, too. Maybe she’s trying ti keep the calories down.

      • Bettyrose says:

But it was a date!! I’m trying to cut my wine consumption by reducing the number of days I drink. Date night is for wine. Not that I can’t enjoy bf’s company without wine, but it certainly makes going out more special after several days of abstaining

      • Citresse says:

Doesn’t Kate stop drinking (and hopefully stop smoking too) in prep for getting pregnant? I don’t think a pregnancy announcement will arrive before the trip to India, but after? Yes, I think so.

  7. Betti says:

Date night = PR fluff about how much in love they still are and/or baby no. 3 announcement soon, particularly with the tidbit that she drank only water. There were date night stories with details before her other pregnancies as well.

Also re the helicopter use. What do we expect from them and she could have made use of the fleet of posh cars at her disposal. Given that they have police outriders barging them throu traffic she could have drove down from Norfolk in about 2 hours if the thought of the train gave her the vapours. Plus the cost of the heli ride is about the same as she spends on a brand new outfit for every time she steps out the door, guess that’s why she wore a repeat – it was the heli ride or a new McQueen coat dress.

    • LAK says:

      What Betti Said.

I’ve almost been ran over by their motorcade when it’s barging through traffic to/from KP. They really travel at speed!!! And the outriders ensure all other traffic gets out of the way in the same manner of ambulance siren clearing traffic. No need to observe traffic rules at all.

      • Tourmaline says:

Right I instantly thought of the very similar publicized date night where Kate daintily sipped sparkling water just before the announcement of baby #2. I am predicting, announcement of next kid in next month, and she will be too sick to go to India/Bhutan.

And love how the DM story on the date night referred to their busy lives juggling the kids with the “demands of their roles as royals.” Are they high? Correct if I am wrong but since Christmas, which is a distant memory to most of us working stiffs, Kate has appeared at 2 church services and that’s it until the other day. I find the faff about them being so hardworking to be insulting. Just admit they are pampered figureheads wheeled out on a sporadic basis and call it a day.

      • notasugarhere says:

She wasn’t drinking sparkling water that night. Cell phone photos of them through the windows showed she had her own large bottle of white wine and William had a glass of red.

  8. weirswalker says:

    Her eyebrows look so unnatural…terrible

  9. Micki says:

I don’t know about Kate’s eyebrows but I’m still waiting for the post slamming Adele’s eyeliner, which is as thick as Kate’s IMO.
And about her travel expences…I’m ready to get outraged at any given moment when she and Will spend more than the chunk of taxpayer money they get just because…but not before that.
Anyway I think that funding any RF is archaic and should be abolished.

    • LAK says:

I don’t think it’s outrageous to slam Kate for her thick eyeliner whilst not doing the same to Adele for the simple reason that it doesn’t suit Kate, whilst it suits Adele.

If she wore it differently, and it complimented her, no one would say a word about it.

I would compare Kate/Adele’s eyeliner habit to Kim K’s wardrobe before and after Kanye. She dressed for her figure and looked good before Kanye became her stylist and started dressing her in ways that don’t flatter her figure.

    • anne_000 says:

I think that when Adele puts on makeup for her professional appearances, she still comes off looking young, hip, and fresh.

In addition to the money W&K get from the taxpayers, they also get their expenses paid for by Charles and the Queen, who get their money from taxpayers, and they also got extra millions for remodeling both their residences. So yes, they are currently getting and using more money than they’re getting under the Sovereign Grant.

      • Micki says:

@LAK: I guess it’s a question of a personal taste. I don’t like eyeliner particularly and I don’t like it on both Adele and Kate. Probably the only one I buy it from is Dita von Teese because she embraced this 50s’ look so completely.
Surely Kate can improve her make-up style but even as she’s now (aged by it) she’s not much different from Victoria von Sweden or Mette-Marit von Norway or Maxima von Holland. All three of them look aged with their usual make-up.

@anne_000: But can’t we say that Kate wears it for her “professional appearances” too? She always goes for strong eye against strong lip.
And about the financing of RF. If I’m not wrong only some of the members get taxpayer money. They are fewer that before but still more than enough. My point is that whatever interfinancing takes place between them as long as it doesn’t cross the set sum, it’s none of my business.
A constitutional monarchy is one hell of oxymoron for me. Why do you need BOTH? Any RF is a bunch of overpayed mascots. Highly entertaining but overpayed nevertheless.

      • LAK says:

Micki: there are times i have thought Maxima’s eye makeup *is* too much, but again it’s a question of whether it suits them or not. Kate has tiny eyes which the thick eyeliner emphasises. Additionally, it’s applied in a very amateurish way which compounds the problem. the other ladies don’t apply it the way Kate does such that it overwhelms their faces.

Regarding the financing, there is alot of creative accounting AND slippery explanations for the budget is continually blown. It’s politically astute of HM to take the train. No one can accuse her of being profligate. Yet, the travel budget is frequently blown as result of other royals such as William, Harry, Kate, Charles, Andrew etc taking helicopters everywhere and saying it’s all royal business expenses. Parliament doesn’t take the royal accountants to task for royal business expenses except when HM asks for extra money for an item that Parliament already funded eg the building fund. It is at times like that you discover that the building fund went into paying WK’s apartment/country mansion refurbishment to the tune of millions instead of refurbishing BP as originally intended. The royal accountants push back by saying it will be their primary residence and the country mansion needs to be secured, ditto the Middleton mansion, and everybody shrugs.

All of this against the backdrop of a law written into the royal expenses account dating back to George 3 that says they can never receive less each year than was received the previous year. This means that their funding is always rising no matter the state of the economy.

We don’t have the same parliamentarians as we did back in early 90s who stood up to the royal household and refused to pay and forced HM to control expenses properly. This is why the Palaces were finally opened up to the public. The current lot, and i include the public, don’t seem to care at the blatant misuse of funds.

      • anne_000 says:

        @ Micki

The problem with the way Kate slathers on makeup is that it’s not done well. Like the other royals you mentioned, she looks their age, instead of ten years or so younger, which she is. What she needs is a professional makeup artist to teach her and for her to accept being taught.

As for the money issue, where is limit when enough is enough? Is it just the Sovereign Grant money allocated to them? Or is the goal post continually moved to include whatever Charles and the Queen gives them too? Or like LAK said above, the millions of BP building funding going to pay for W&K’s KP remodeling instead? Or again, as LAK said, when the fund given to them never decreases but can only stay the same or increase year by year.

It’s kind of hard to say ‘this is the line’ when the line keeps moving forward.

      • notasugarhere says:

As others on here can detail (LAK, Sixer), ultimately the majority of what the royals have belongs to the taxpayers. Duchy of Lancaster and Duchy of Cornwall (their two big money earners) are not personally owned by the Windsor family, and would revert to the People if the monarchy was ended.

    • perplexed says:

I think the eyebrow is in style now. But everyone else is applying it better than Kate. When I look at Adele’s eyebrows, I’m not thinking “Why does that look bad?”

    • MinnFinn says:

Adele works in a creative field. Kate’s ‘works’ for one of the most conservative institutions in the world.

      • Micki says:

        @LAK:@ anne_00
This way of funding sounds nearly as a permition to print money. I am amazed it can go only one way.
I think the Queen went “frugal” when she agreed to have Britania permanently docked. But she is more aware of the Nation Sentiment that any other IMO. Even Charles (as I remembrer) was at one time on a crusade for saving resources and was driving an Oldtimer Buick at the same time.
I think that if the Cambridges get more and consistent headwind they may reconsider their spending. But if it gets only a “shrug”…But as I’m not a Brit I can’t complain.

As for the make up. If I sum it up correctly it’s the application problem rather than eyeliner per se(my problem). I haven’t decided about a charity for 2016 so may be a smoky eye course for Kate might be a worthy one. It will round nicely her newly acquired cooking skills, what do you think?

      • Micki says:

@Minn Finn: But I won’t put Kate’s make up into entertainment cathegory either. It’s the most basic concervative office look.

  10. Sixer says:

And it’s not as though Her Maj even gets the train with any fanfare. I love these two images:

The jacket over the back of the seat!

    • aaa says:

Now I have to add to my list of fantasies being able to throw my jacket with an insanely expensive and probably historical brooch attached over my seat on public transportation.

    • bluhare says:

Those photos are really cute, actually. Her Maj and Phil sitting on the train saving their seats in a closed off carriage!

I might be a bit odd, but I like riding the train. Granted I haven’t done a commuter train run into London, but I love riding the train watching the world go by. Last time was from Kings Cross to Wakefield and I learnt how fast you have to move with luggage when I didn’t get off in time and had to go to Leeds!

      • anne_000 says:

        @ bluhare

I like riding trains too. And I think it would be that much better riding one from London to Norfolk because of the scenery, or am I wrong about that?

      • ArtHistorian says:

I love riding the train too! You usually get to see more of the countryside.

      • Noonenobodynowhere says:

One of my favorite memories is riding on the Flying Scotsman. I love train rides. This is kind of random, but have any of y’all ridden on the super high speed trains? I took the one from Paris to Barcelona and when I got off the train, my balance was so messed up I couldn’t stand up. Completely mortified my sister by lying down on the sidewalk haha. Has this ever happened to you? Do you know what it is?

      • Citresse says:

I’ve never been on a high speed train, but I can tell you how surprised I was re- Via rail (Canada) isn’t the most comfortable trip. A five hour trip to Ottawa from Toronto so bumpy and freezing like a meat locker in business class. The seats are actually more comfortable in economy class. The Go train on the other hand was smooth like glass compared to Via rail.
I’d rather fly. But I’m not going by private helicopter 😉

  11. LAK says:

The helicopter story is interesting to me because it’s the first a mainstream paper has put the spotlight on their helicopter/private jet habit and contrasted it to another (perceived to be genuinely frugal when it’s not the case) royal.

Every other time, it’s written with a caveat of necessity. Or it’s a throwaway line at the end of an article. This time they didn’t bother sweetening the story.

    • bluhare says:

I agree with you, LAK. I was quite surprised to see it, especially contrasted with the Queen taking the train back. It was couched as personal vs. business, but it’s not like Kate had to dash back to make an appointment or something. That would have been a bit different.

  12. Tina says:

Oh yeah, the royal reporters are still annoyed with the Cambridges. Fairly fawning coverage of the event itself and then bam, let’s contrast her profligacy with the Queen’s thrift.

  13. India says:

So what if she spent that much. Charles paid for it so it’s no skin off William’s long nose.

    • Betti says:

No the British taxpayer does, the article clearly states this. We pick up the tab if it’s for a public event.

    • Tina says:

Betti’s right. Even if Charles had paid for it, Charles’s money comes from the Duchy of Cornwall, which is not his private property. It is reserved for the use of the heir to the throne and belongs to the British people.

  14. Citresse says:

Doesn’t the Queen view the train to and from Sandringham as tradition?
No one else talks of Charles, Anne or others using helicopters. Isn’t Charles especially bad chartering entire aircraft for himself and Camilla?
Diana took many trips by helicopter too didn’t she?

    • bluhare says:

They all do. I think in this case the side eye comes as she wasn’t going home to do another appointment; she was going home to go home on a day her maj took the train on the exact route she’d have taken. She flew in that morning, got ready and then left from KP. She also doesn’t put in that much time on the job, unlike the others who use helicopters to go to appointments, at least that seems like the best rationale for her getting side eyed for it and others not.

As far as costs, the helicopter is already leased, the pilot’s salary and benefits are already paid. What isn’t paid is the fuel cost. And as it was so she could go home from a business event, it was a business expense; therefore, paid by the public. So £3000 instead of less than £60.

      • Citresse says:

It would seem the root cause of this situation is the fact W&K don’t appear to spend much time in London (KP). That’s such a shame considering the amount of money spent on the KP apt refurb.
Diana and Charles spent much more time in London since both William and Harry attended London schools as youngsters.
I wish Diana had been granted a private home from HM away from the paps and hustle and bustle of London. The future may have been quite different if Diana was not IMO such a prisoner of KP.

    • MinnFinn says:

Lots of differences between the Diana era and Kate. Diana worked a lot and the heli might have been a necessary timer saver, carbon footprint was less of a concern and afaik there wasn’t an urgent and long list of deferred maintenance on royal properties.

      • Tourmaline says:

+1 MinnFinn. I’ve said it before but there are Pinterest pages showing Diana and all her activities chronologically by year and she worked A LOT. Even with two little kids. All around the UK and Europe, lots of international tours. And it wasn’t like Kate and Will’s tours where they need weeks on either side of the tour to relax and recouperate.

Cambridge Apologists would say they are further down the line of succession so don’t need to work so hard. But I can’t see them working hard, EVER. They want everyone to have very low expectations for them and have systematically worked to reduce them. That is William’s plan.

      • Citresse says:

        Tourmaline
Yes, they’re further down the line, but you never know what can happen in future, and now they’re in their 30s (more mature) and have two children, they really do need to contribute more with regard to their working life. As a couple, it appears they’ll never attain Princess Anne (work) respected status but if they don’t find a right fit and get adjusted to greater responsibilities and a heavy work load sooner rather than later it may hit them someday like a freight train.

      • Tourmaline says:

Oh yes Citresse I totally agree–I was saying the Cambridge apologists always excuse lack of work with the “further down the line” response.

Also Citresse agree with your “prisoner of KP” comment about about Diana. Reminds me of those stories about Diana asking her brother if she could live in an empty property on Althorp and he turned her down. I personally think feeling trapped at KP led her on her final misadventure with Dodi, as she was desperate to get out of the center of London but always had to rely on other’s kindness to make that happen. I don’t know if she simply did not have enough money to get her own “country home” or if it was just something she did not have time to do before time ran out.

      • notasugarhere says:

The “he’s only heir-to-the-heir” argument falls down when you see the majority of royals currently outworking W&K are further down the line of succession.

  15. Hazel says:

Loved the photos of the Queen. As for Kate, eh, we’ll never see a change in behavior. That takes self-awareness. As for the DM article about her brows–I wonder about the people who give the go-ahead for such articles. I was more taken aback by the change in her teeth.

  16. HeyThere! says:

The only way she gets a pass on using the heli was if, and only if, she was coming from a previous royal engagement and had to take it to make it to the other royal engagement in time! And we all know she didn’t double book herself that day. Hell, I would double and triple book myself just to take a heli ride! LOL EVERYONE!!! Come and look at how important I am!!!!

    • Deedee says:

Who knows? Her personal trainer may have been waiting for her to get back. Or Pippa may have been around to make her a smoothie. One can’t keep these folks waiting.

      • Tourmaline says:

Totally, its not like she had to speed away by copter because she was busy with another set of engagements somewhere else. She has done just about blank-all since Christmas and now she has another week plus off until her next performance.

    • Jade says:

Nah the pass is if she’s pregnant and trying to avoid public transport (even first class) to avoid zika virus. Are there mozzies in UK? Touch on wood.

  17. anne_000 says:

So…. after millions are spent remodeling the largest ‘apartment’ at KP, it’s main purpose now is that of a changing room and clothes storage.

And what was stopping Kate from arriving the day before ‘work’ in London by a cheaper and slower means of transport? Surely it wasn’t because she had work the day before….

Like the apologists said, she looked rough at ‘work’ because she was probably up late the night before having to take care of two kids and probably had a hectic morning with them the day of ‘work,’ so wouldn’t staying the night at KP have made more sense as the nannies and Carole could take care of the kids back at AH?

It’s not like Kate doesn’t already spend time away from the kids when she’s in London shopping and getting her hair done.

And why the rush to get back to AH after her ‘work’ finished at 1 pm? If she took the train or a car, the difference in time would have been only about an extra hour. Still would have been home before dinner.

    • Maia says:

What stood out for me was that arrived at KP at 11 and left KP at 1 pm. Meaning that it took 2 hours for her to get to the engagement, do it, get back in London traffic. And the whole gig cost the UK taxpayers upwards of 10 GBP (at least) if you add the cost of her outfit, her jewelry and the transportation. This works out to an hourly wage of 5000 GBP/hour. At the minimum.
I still don’t get what the royals bring to the country that justifies having them around. It seems incredibly wasteful to me. I understand the value of consumer spending and am greatly in favor of having a vibrant consumerist economy, but this is expense comes out of national investment (if you want to get all economics on me), and is actually a burden to the country as lower investments mean lower growth. I used to get really angry at stuff like this. Now I am merely puzzled that politicians sanction and welcome this.

      • Tourmaline says:

Well, she’s worn the outfit a few times before, but I heartily agree with you on the 2 hours turnaround part.

  18. Lainey says:

She get criticised for her looks and her spending so of course we get a story of a rare date night to remind us of her fairytale with the prince. Her PR is that predictible

    • anne_000 says:

Yeah. I wonder if the date night PR was because they knew this copter story would be coming out.

  19. Tessd says:

I really think she doesn’t make a single decision when it comes to things like that. It’s all Willy’s dirty deeds.

  20. MinnFinn says:

The heli lease diverts funds from deferred maintenance on royal properties. How is that not state-sanctioned corruption? Why don’t British taxpayers insist on more control, accountability and transparency for how the sovereign grant is spent?

BP’s heli flight logs undoubtedly include who is being transported. It should be public record.

    • Betti says:

Lets not forget that Buckingham Palace had to forgo much needed repair work for a leaking roof (i think?) so that Waity could refurb the KP apartment (2 new kitchens) and paint it twice. Charles is paying for the Amner Hall refurb from private funds, meaning the taxpayer is not picking up the bill again.

The Palace releases accounts every year that details what was spent so they are at least trying to be transparent. Unlike the Buckets who are doing everything they can to hide what they are really up to.

      • LAK says:

£1.5M of taxpayer money went on Amner Hall. That”s in addition to £4.5M spent their KP apartment. Whatever Charles or HM paid from their own pockets, it’s on top of that.

Also not forgetting the £1M taxpayer money used on the Middleton mansion for security upgrades since Kate and the kids are so often at Middleton Towers. And every time she visits Middleton Towers, the tax payer bill is said to be 5 figures daily as well as reduced emergency services and police to the surrounding villages.

ETA: £1M taxpayer money spent on that Farmhouse they were renting in Wales instead of living on a secure base.

  21. perplexed says:

I think she’s pretty, yet at the same time I think she looks bad. Does that make any sense whatsoever???

  22. Citresse says:

Perhaps Kate just doesn’t photograph well? That’s why I enjoy reading posts on CB about Kate from people who’ve seen her in person.

    • Betti says:

I’ve seen her in person and she is as aged/tired looking as she does in the un-photoshopped photo’s we see of her. She’s very thin and has bad skin, its dry and she wears a lot of foundation to hide the sun/smoking damage. She struck me as childlike, like someone who lives in a bubble. It was not long after the wedding and she was unsure of how to interact with people, she hasn’t gotten any better at that by the looks of things.

      • Citresse says:

I wonder what happened to Kate from the time she first arrived at St. Andrews to when she officially was considered a public figure? I mean, by all accounts, when she arrived at St. Andrews she was an outgoing, healthy (didn’t diet herself stick thin) person admired by many, was she not?
And now so much criticism. And she seems so frail. Is this just a case of someone chasing fame and finding out the hard way it’s too much to handle?

      • aurelia says:

Saw her in new zealand when she was here and its totally true – what she said above.

      • Betti says:

@Citresse – Well as the old adage goes ‘be careful what you wish for you just might get it’. I think Kate thought (or more likely Carole told her) that she could deal with it, however she was woefully unprepared for the role; that became noticeable very quickly. Personally, I don’t think she prepared for the role as she (and her mother) were never really sure how it would work out. Kate was his long term go to girl, the girl he ran to in between chasing others or just when he wanted his leg over. The whole ‘official gf’ narrative that was played in the press was all Middleton PR. As others have said they were on and off more times than a light switch.

I also can’t help but think there is more going on with her than a lack of interest in the public side of the role – which is clearly true. William has never treated her well, marriage and children won’t change that. His bad treatment and the ‘grooming’ from Carole (i.e. throwing her at him at every turn, encouraging her to take him back after he cheated etc..) has had a negative effect on her emotional state of mind. She’s been worn down by pressure from others to do what they wanted her to do. Plus i was never convinced she really knew what she was getting into, does anyone ever really – she’s never had the emotional maturity to deal with it because she was never allowed to mature. Carole and William have a lot to answer for.

I know i shade them but thats because of their bad attitude and PR shenanigans. They get shade because what they do is different to what they say and yes they are answerable to the British/Commonwealth people as he will one day be head of state. They need to suck it up or walk away. Behaving like spoilt toddlers is not going to endear you to the people you will one day lead.

      • Jade says:

I was out of the workforce for just four months and had difficulties interacting and conversing with strangers after being back. I think that’s afflicting her, especially after being out of school for ten years and not having long term job(s) after graduation. Her home and kids are a comfort for now. For how long God knows. Essentially she is like a fresh graduate finding her way but taking her own time to errrh learn and work. It doesn’t help her to improve but seems like she is determined to take her time.

      • notasugarhere says:

We keep getting stories from shop assistants that she is relaxed and down to earth. She appears to have no trouble chatting up shop assistants, celebrities, and cute male athletes. She only has trouble communicating when it involves kids and anything close to serious work.

  23. zardi123 says:

Betti you are right about the looking rough … I can imagine childlike as never grown up
and we also feel she is totally out of her depth
Her latest video is just terrible the way she speaks so false and she was staring at the autocue so false as she will always be.. just arm candy and lazy we can see she only stays at the appointment for a short time shakes a few hands and leaves. Total waste of time …

  24. BobaFelt says:

her face looks like putty that got warm and is starting to slide off her head. Super weird.

    Ol’ Putty Face.

  25. Call me AL says:

She does have 2 children, one of whom is under a year old. Maybe she is tired and that’s why she looks tired! Another reason to take a helicopter — save time — avoid seeing people who criticize you? I don’t really like her but I had my children at the same time as she did and wouldn’t want anyone criticizing me!

    • cristine says:

She took the helicopter because she is just like her PR team says she is: She is just like us. Like me and you. I worked 2 hours in the past 2 months and my boss made sure I do not waste anytime, so he offered me a sweet chopper ride.

She works 2 hours/month and needs a helicopter ride to work because she gets way with this sorts of stuff. End of story.

    • notasugarhere says:

Did you have two nannies, a couple of housekeepers, a cook, cleaning staff, and two dozen office staff to handle your schedule? She’s not doing the work of a full-time SAHM, so it doesn’t make sense to compare her to one.

She’s supposed to avoid the people who criticize her? The people who criticize her are the ones paying for her posh life.

  26. Starlight says:

Tired looking – helicopter – sipping water in a pub sounds like baby 3 possibly

  27. Bobafelty says:

    Still a putty face

  28. msthang says:

Notasugar, those shopkeepers want her money, they have to say nice things! That said she is happiest when spending Chuck’s money, hence so very chatty Cathy!!! Believe it or not that really was a doll that came out in the early 60’s, my sister had one!!
