Dakota Johnson in ‘liquid gold’ Marc Jacobs at UK premiere: lovely or meh?

Here are some photos from last night’s London premiere of How To Be Single. It just occurred to me that this film is a test to see if Dakota Johnson can carry a film which doesn’t have “Fifty Shades” in the title. We’ll see. For what it’s worth, I think How To Be Single looks cute. I’m not going to see it in theaters, but I enjoy the trailers and previews and I think Dakota is the brunette romantic heroine we’ve been waiting for. That being said, Dakota still needs to work out some kinks when it comes to her red carpet style.

Much like the Saint Laurent gown Dakota wore for the NYC premiere, I’m not really feeling her Marc Jacobs gown at the London premiere. I mean, I understand why and how she chose these particular dresses – they’re pretty and striking – but there’s something “off” about the gowns on Dakota specifically. The Saint Laurent was just the wrong color – it could and should have been any other color other than beige. But this Marc Jacobs? I like metallics. I like her in gold, even liquid gold. So what’s throwing it off? The bangs? They don’t help, but I think it’s the fit on the bodice? Still, it’s a better look than she’s managed in the past few months.

Rebel Wilson has looked SO pretty during this promotional tour. Did she get a new stylist or something? Because her looks have been super-flattering. I love her teal dress here, and I love that she’s styled with big, bouncy curls.

Leslie Mann in Reem Acra… I like this even though I feel like I should hate it. The appliques are overdone and cartoonish, but she wears it well. It ends up looking really cute on her.

Rebel’s smile is so infectious. I like Dakota too, I think she’s a good actress with charm and range.

    • Kitten says:

I hate-watched Fifty Shades on Sunday. It superseded my expectations in that it was even more terrible than I ever could have imagined.

But Dakota did a good job! I was surprised at how well she did with an awful, cringe worthy script. Prior to that, I’d only ever seen her in interviews and I found her to be painfully bland… But she really did have a screen presence in Fifty Shades of Grey.

I feel ashamed that I even used the terms “screen presence” and “Fifty Shades of Grey” in the same sentence but…there it is.

      • Liberty says:

Watch some episodes online from the US tv sitcom Ben & Kate. I think about 2011 or 2012? she was actually really good in it, great timing.

      • Ally8 says:

She was adorable in Ben & Kate, showing wonderful comedienne skills. My affection for her comes from this.

I’d be on board for a cringey/eye-rolling viewing of this movie in a theater, but Rebel Wilson just grates on me from what I’ve seen of her part in it. Did they pick her most annoying over-the-top forced moments for the trailer, or is she like that all the way through? She seems to be playing a caricature of herself.

  2. BearcatLawyer says:

Dakota needs a better hair stylist or a comb at a minimum. Every time I see a photo of her, I just want to scream, “Get your hair out of your face!!!”

  3. Mgsota says:

Her hair looks terrible and the dress seems baggy! She’s a very pretty girl, but her style needs help.

    • tracking says:

+1. Neither the fit nor silhouette flatters and the hair looks like she was just rolling around on the floor.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

The loose bodice looks sloppy and the deep cut under the arms is ridiculous combined with the back draping. It looks like a cutting error.

And the shoulder ruffles. The. Ruffles.

      • sarah says:

She has a really nice back/butt? (Is that a thing), like she has a really strong curve to her back, so any type of back-tied bow or draping makes her look sloppy. Also, the dress is just cut strangely

    • Liberty says:

I think it’s more a bodice shape concept borrowed from a lot of 1930s movie gowns, like the Piccolino model worn by Ginger Rogers in Top Hat.

A bit looser, relaxed, within the lingerie shape trend for daywear that’s starting up for spring.

      • Trashaddict says:

The back draping is great, the ruffles in the front are unbalanced somehow. The darts are where they’re supposed to be but they don’t work right. If you kept the back and fixed the front, it might be a great dress.

  4. tegteg says:

Dakota comes across as SO vanilla… I did see her on Fallon though, and she came across as pretty funny and it seemed as if there might be some real talent there. Check out the Youtube videos, if you’re curious! She did some sort of phone-answering skit and pretended like she was rejected from the Clown Academy – pretty funny – and she did several different accents. So, that was surprising to me. That being said, this dress just makes her look like vanilla dipped in gold. Not a good look. Rebel looks amazing and on-point all around. I don’t like Leslie’s dress, but I love her shoes!

    • Amelia says:

I loved that video, I was surprised by just how witty she was. Truly the best part of Fifty Shades of Sh-te.
Not a fan of the dress. It looks like it needs a good steam to get the wrinkles out.

    • AG-UK says:

She does seem vanilla I saw her in A Bigger Splash but she didn’t have any presence, she was opposite Ralph Fiennes (who I love) and Tilda soooo that might be why. I don’t know haven’t seen her in enough of anything.

  5. Maum says:

The problem with Dakota is that she looks like she’s slept in the dress, woke up and legged it out of the house when she realised she was going to be late to her premiere.

    • kathpam says:

Nailed it! I was going to say that the dress is cheapened by the fact that it looks like she slept in it. Then again, it might just be the material.

  6. lilacflowers says:

Dakota looks like she is attending a different event than the other two. And she looks like she is wearing a giant foil candy bar wrapper. Rebel looks good. Leslie’s dress is fun.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

The gold dress looks too stiff or something. She looks pretty, but I agree there’s something off. The ruffles at the shoulder, the fit, her hair, I’m not sure, but it’s underwhelming. I think Rebel’s hair looks pretty and yeah, I sort of like that crazy cartoon dress, too. Maybe it’s her face. She looks like she’s laughing with the dress, not at it. Or something.

  8. Eva says:

I saw this movie yesterday and it was actually really good, one of the better films of this genre.

  9. Detritus says:

Rebels dress. I want to own it.
the colour looks great, the cut is flattering, it looks glamorous, you can wear a real bra and I may be dreaming but it looks a little stretchy and like it might be super comfortable?

Dakota’s dress… It doesn’t work. The fabric weight and sheen don’t match, if that makes sense. It seems really brittle and stiff for such a liquid hue. I dunno I’ve seen way better gold or metallic dresses. In recent memory Mirrin’s silver dress was way nicer than this. A for effort B- for execution.

I hate appliqués. This dress does not make me rethink my stance.

    • Maxime DuCamp says:

@Detritus you said exactly what I was thinking about Dakota’s, esp. the brittle where it should look liquid .

i did recently read that Rebel got a stylist; she should share her with Dakota!

  10. cleveland girl says:

Dakotas dress looks cheap and tacky, and her hair is a damn mess. Besides that she looks pretty.

  11. dr mantis toboggan says:

    Gold doesn’t go with beige

  12. Nibbi says:

i think dakota’s hair looks fine, even pretty, and her makeup/ face looks really gorgeous actually… you’re right that it’s the fit of the bodice. the weird pointy-scallop cut around the waist reminds me of kermit the frog’s neck-fringe and the way the flat-metallic-shine lays awkwardly highlights her belly button. it’s just a weird dress.

  13. Lucy2 says:

I love Rebel’s dress, she looks great. Don’t care for Leslie’s, it’s a little too cutesy for my taste.

  14. Sumodo1 says:

    I dig Leslie Mann’s pose!

  15. ell says:

thing is, fashion is taste. so while i always enjoy these posts because i love talking about fashion, in a way it’s also pointless because being taste and being a form of art, i can find something striking and gorgeous and others can find it ugly.

i like dakota’s style generally, because she tries to be a bit different. i hate most of red carpet looks because they’re boring and all the same, so i love when actors are daring. this dress is ok though, i like the shape but would have been better in a different colour.

  16. Scal says:

It’s the shoulders on that dress with the awful ruffles-combined with the messy hair and the the fact that the dress is way to long (look at how far she lifts it up when she’s walking)

All those things combined makes it look sloppy and off.

  17. grabbyhands says:

She doesn’t look comfortable in the gown. I don’t know if it is because it doesn’t look like it fits well or if it is because it looks like she picked it up from a pile of laundry on her floor five minutes before she walked the red carpet. Plus it seems way too formal for a comedy movie premiere.

Also, her personality seems really beige, so it clashes with the glamour of the gown. I feel like she would have been better suited and looked more comfortable in a dress more similar to Leslie’s. The one she is wearing makes it look like she is a kid playing dress up with her mother’s clothes.

  18. Elizabeth says:

I don’t care for the high-low thing, but Rebel looks fabulous otherwise. Leslie has enough personality to pull off cartoon. Don’t really care for Dakota’s dress, but she’s really pretty. If you’re going to do liquid gold, it needs to be liquid. This is just too crumpled-looking.

    • NGBoston says:

Agree. Just makes me want to scream, “Hello?! It’s the 70’s & early 80’s calling, and we need our really bad dress back”. It was taken from the bottom of the box with that old Disco Ball and John Travolta’s White Suit.

  19. Sarah01 says:

Rebel is so very pretty, love her pose. The liquid gold dress is stunning, but too much for this event. Kristin looks the best!

  20. RedWeatherTiger says:

Rebel looks so beautiful here. I kind of love her.

Dakota always looks a wreck, and this time is no exception. I have yet to see her display any talent, but I’m open to it. The movie looks sort of cute.

Leslie Mann…okay. A little sick of her and her voice, but okay.

  21. Farhi says:

Dakota is a pretty girl but this dress is awful. it would be awful on anyone.

  22. Tig says:

I don’t like the ruffles on Dakota’s dress. I like her as an actress, and will go see this in a theater. If you want women-centric films(yes, it’s a comedy, but still) go see them. At some point in time VOD sales will count as box office, but not there yet.
Back to fashion- loved Rebel’s styling and the hair esp. Leslie’s dress looks like anime throw up, but I still like it- go figure.

  23. Angela says:

Rebel looks incredible! Definitely the best overall look of the three. Her hair and makeup are perfect, and she looks glowing, beautiful, and happy.

  24. Bom says:

Diane Kruger’s gold Calvin Klein in Cannes (2011?), that’s the ultimate liquid gold gown.
This one is boring, ill fitting, crumpled and poorly styled.

  25. SamiHami says:

Dakota looks like a little girl playing dress up in mommy’s closet. It just doesn’t fit well. Rebel’s dress would be great except for that mullety thing going on with the hemline. That never looks good on any dress and should never, ever be done! 🙂 The appliques on the other dress actually seem to work, surprisingly.

  26. Nancy says:

Really don’t like the dress, but for whatever reason she looked pretty…..except for the greasy hair. She might really want to consult a stylist, but have a feeling she’s not the muss and fuss type, unless she still wants to be the rebel daughter….whatever

  27. Tallia says:

Wow. Dakota in a dress from Prom circa 1980. Um. No.
Rebel looks amazing. Love the color, love the dress, love it all.
Leslie looks like Manga exploded on her.

  28. Cc says:

Looks like used golden wrapping paper. Do not like.

  29. Kim says:

Re: Dakota’s dress – I love her, but it’s bad when your dress calls to mind something Kylie Jenner wore several months ago… It’s REALLY bad when Kylie’s comes out on top.

  30. FingerBinger says:

Dakota’s dress is a fail. That is dress for a tall woman. Someone like Tyra Banks would look better in it. As for Dakota carrying the film she doesn’t have to. It’s an ensemble cast.

  31. Nica says:

I like Dakota’s casual undone looking hair and the contrast it provides with the glamour of the gold dress. Although I don’t think this particular dress works really, too stiff and wrong fit, as others have noted. I generally like Dakota’s style though, and am a fan of bangs.

    • FSF says:

If the dress fit her, maybe the contrast would work better, but that dress is wearing her. I’m just not feeling it. The deep “V” back of that dress needs something more than a limp ponytail dangling down the middle. She looks like a kid playing dress up.

  32. FSF says:

Dakota’s dress would probably look better if it fit her. High drama gold lamé needs something other than “gym hair.” I don’t get the hair. At all.

  33. Pandy says:

I don’t know about Dakota carrying the film – good luck trying to not be overshadowed by Leslie and Rebel. Those two can easily steal the scenes from her I suspect. Then again, didn’t watch 50 so I haven’t seen her in anything. She just doesn’t seem compelling to me. But maybe she’s great for romcoms.

  34. CornyBlue says:

Dakota’s gown is just so horrible like how do people buy this for huge sums of money?? ( I know they loan it but the price on these things!!!!!!!!)
Also there is something about Dakota’s eye area that bothers me

  35. QQ says:

Sorry but This CACKLE i had over Tiredface as soon as these pics loaded LMMMMMFFAAAOO that dress is horrible, dated, unsexy, badly cut and flopping off of her, if you told me Melanie or better yet her grandma wore it in the 80s to a function I’d believe it wholesale

GOLD LAME FFS!! Stop trying to make her happen

Let’s not with the hair either!

Leslie once again dressed like a kid going to a bat mitzvah in the 50s-60s flouncy fussy things all over her red carpets, she is much too old and petite for this stuff

Rebel keeps impressing me with whomever it’s styling her, Melissa McCarthy should contact whomever this is ( also this beysus fan hair she is sporting is EVERYTHING!)

  36. JenniferJustice says:

That dress does Dakota no favors and I want really bad for her nail it. I do think she is talented but hasn’t had the chance (script) to show us yet. She’s never going to be the Hollywood standard of beauty or even the American standard of beauty, but I’m tired of that. We need some new talent and looks should not be a deal-breaker. Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and Meryl Streep were never drop-dead gorgeous and they are the best of the best. They came into their own in their 30s and found their own style. I’m waiting for that with Dakota. I’m rooting for her.

  37. kri says:

Good god, doesn’t her style at least own a Joy Mangano steamer?! Did we learn NOTHING from “Joy”?! Awful dress and those shoulder bows/ruffles. I had those on my Xmas gifts this year. No, wait. Mine were much better. That fabric only worked on the Solid Gold dancers (respect).

  38. Gauchita says:

Gals, I actually thinks her awfull hair is on purpose; like she went to Jennifer Gardner’s school of non-threatening millionaires. It’s “I’m just like you, middle ‘murica, buy tickets for my movies, y’all!” 101

  39. Ennie says:

Poorly fitted. Looks like a loaned dress.

  40. nicegirl says:

I am loving those shoes on Leslie Mann.

  41. TreadStyle says:

I find Dakota meh 98% of the time. In style, looks, and acting. I love Rebel, she looks great and I want her as a friend. I think Leslie can pull stuff like this off bc she is so cute and has such a fun personality, it works for her.

  42. mrsrockstar says:

I have seen a number of these “liquid metal” looks this season and they look great with a great close fit and a simple silhouette. This looks more like the afteroarty wrapping and decor. Too much everything else.

  43. serena says:

I hate Dakota’s dress, the fabric is makes a lot of scraped wrinkles, the fit is wrong and the frumpy straps are 80’s-awful.

  44. Jojo says:

Dakota is so mousy. She doesn’t have the personality or look to pull this off. The dress wears her because it has more personality than she does.

  45. Josefina says:

I like Dakota, but Im tired of her being treated as an it-girl. Shes not, shes bland and uninteresting. But shes nice enough and I can see her doing very well un this type of movies (light commedies).

Rebel does look lovely recently but I find her whole comedy schtick so unoriginal and grating.

  46. minx says:

They should cut the ruffles off of Dakota’s dress and fit it to her properly.
Love Leslie’s dress–she seems like she would be fun to know.

  47. What's inside says:

I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. She is lucky to be young enough to wear just about anything and make it work.

  48. raincoaster says:

You nailed it. This dress is 100% Jean Harlow and Dakota’s styling is 100% “humanities freshman between classes.” The makeup’s not there, the hair is just…like, I wake up looking better than that. And it’s not that she’s not beautiful, it’s that she’s seemingly ambivalent about glamour, or afraid we won’t recognize her or something.

Rebel Wilson looks fantastic. She’s got great ankles and calves, which nobody ever mentions.

As for the cartoonish dress, yeah, I should hate it but I don’t. Spirit Animal!

  49. LAK says:

    Nope, but she has confidence.
