Should Charlize Theron take the villain role in the eighth ‘Fast & Furious’ film?

Here are some assorted photos of Charlize Theron, some of which are from this month. Charlize has been in Berlin, filming The Coldest City, a spy film that also stars James McAvoy. If you can make it out, you can see that this role involves a lot of wig work! In some shots from the set, she’s wearing a blonde wig which makes her look like Nicole Kidman, and in some shots, she’s wearing a red wig. This is not the film where Charlize is playing a role originally intended to be for a male actor – that’s another film, The Gray Man, which is currently undergoing re-writes to make the lead into a woman.

Charlize, post-Mad Max, has a lot of options. I’m pleasantly surprised to see how she’s rejiggered her career away from heart-wrenching dramatic actress to bona fide action star, a badass lady willing to kick ass and take names. Which is probably why Charlize is in talks to play the villain in the eighth installment of Fast & Furious.

Charlize Theron has received an offer to join the cast of Universal’s next “Fast and Furious” movie, “Fast 8,” as a new villain. While it’s unclear where negotiations stand currently, sources close to the situation tell Variety that the studio is eager to add Theron to the ensemble cast. Universal had no comment.

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Jason Statham are all expected to return, along with other franchise favorites. It was announced in October that, following the success of “Straight Outta Compton,” F. Gary Gray would direct the project. Production is set to start next spring with the film dated to bow on April 17, 2017. This isn’t the first big star to join the “Fast and Furious” cast mid-series. Dwayne Johnson joined the cast in “Fast Five” — Universal likely hopes to mirror that move with Theron’s casting, adding a fresh face for not only “Fast 8,” but for the remaining installments.

While the “serious actors” may side-eye the Fast & Furious franchise, those movies have made a lot of people very rich, and they are legitimately popular all over the world. I honestly wouldn’t hate it if Charlize took this on – it would show that she has a sense of humor about her career, and it would show that she’s not afraid to jump into a franchise that’s already seven films deep. Plus, I’m guessing she would pick up a very healthy paycheck for her trouble AND she would have fun. Charlize is friendly with Jason Statham in particular – they’ve worked together before, and I seem to remember that they got along well.

PS… I do not believe Charlize is Liam Neeson’s mystery girlfriend. She might be his type, but I just don’t see it.

I will be OK if she does. Also they got diector F. Gary Gray from Italian Job which might be the reason she is open to this.

  2. Pixi says:

Wow she looks exactly like Nicole Kidman in that last image.

    • Rhiley says:

I think she looks Emma Thompson in the first image. It is probably a combination of weird lighting and the camera catching her while not fully prepared to have her photo taken.

  3. Nancy says:

But of course they should. Even though it’s a step down for her. She stole the last Mad Max film even with ripped up clothes and short cropped hair. She was/is the bomb. #womancrushwednesday……..I just realized it was Thursday but so what.

    • CornyBlue says:

Maybe she will steal this movie too and elevate it.

    • INeedANap says:

I don’t know that it’s a step down. I think it would be easy and fun for her, and the ensemble nature of the films likely means she can bring her son to set and have a flexible schedule. All (dramatic) work and no play makes Charlize a dull girl.

no! totally downgrade career-wise. But then again, for huge money they are open to anything, there’s when you understand who’s greedy, who’s a real artist, who doesn’t give f+cks to give anymore. Sadly even the talented ones are selling perfumes, watches and cars, even if they have enough money to live off the rest of their lives without even working. Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Charlize selling stuff, Robert De Niro with his paycheck collecting awful movies…SAD!

    • CornyBlue says:

It is not their fault indies dont pay.

      • LAK says:

Blockbusters make a lot of noise and everyone is stunned by the BO, but they barely make money when you look at their economics and are usually just exercises in marketing for the studio/merchandising. The actors, with rare exceptions, make little money from them.

      • CornyBlue says:

@LAK that maybe true for small actors but am pretty sure Charlize will not be doing this for anything less than 5 Million atleast.

    • INeedANap says:

The FF movies are pure fun and one of the few franchises that has a diverse cast and crew. Frankly, it makes me think more of her that she is looking to have a good time and support racial and ethnic diversity in Hollywood, unlike many of her compatriots.

    • SusanneToo says:

I recall Helen Mirren saying she wished the F&F guys would give her a call, that she’d love to do one. Sometimes, it does just show a sense of humor and, who knows, maybe viewers like what they see and check out their smaller films.
But, DeNiro? I can’t believe the crap he keeps doing. Yuck!!

      • Hadleyb says:

I was all ” ehh thats too low for her to do” but everyone is right …FF is just a fun watch and I like that Helen would love to be in one. They should cast both of them.

I haven’t watched all of them — do the bad guys ever win or is always Vin winning in the end?

  5. lucy2 says:

I love her so much as an actress, I think she should do whatever the hell she wants. If she wants to have fun, be in another blockbuster, and make a big paycheck, go for it. If she wants to ignore that and focus on indies and dramas, go for it. I think she’s one of the most versatile actresses out there, so whatever she wants to explore is great.

  6. ichsi says:

Yay! The Coldest City pics! I for one am very excited for this movie.

  7. frantasticstar says:

    Do we REALLY need a F&F 8???

    • crtb says:

That is how I feel . Really??
      F&F #8 or is it #9.
      This is a step down.
When I think of those kinds of movies, I think of people who can’t really act. Is she going to do a “Friday” movies with Ice Cube next? Last Friday, Next Friday, Friday, Friday After Next, A Week From Friday, Two weeks ago Friday.

    • lucy2 says:

The last one made $1.5 billion worldwide, they are going to keep making those as long as they’re profitable.

  8. Tiffany says:

Worked with the director before and wants to work with her again. Already friendly with another star. A big ol pile of money thrown her way.

Yeah, not seeing the downside. I mighf go see this one if it is confirmed.

  9. alex_r says:

I know a lot of people sneer at the FF movies but I love them. They always have a diverse cast and the women are as badass as the men.

  10. kri says:

There is a huge following for those movies, so yeah..why not? And she’d get to work with Dwayne. I heart the Rock.

  11. PaulY says:

Sure, why not? She’s already a villain in real life.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

      Excuse me but what ?

      • PaulY says:

She hasn’t earned the reputation as Ice Queen for nothing, plus, she married Sean Penn – that tells you something.

    • topcat says:

@paulY-she went out with Sean Penn-did not marry him

      • PaulY says:

@topcat Thanks…I stand corrected there, but I stand by what I said about her as a person. I just can’t muster much admiration for folks who look down their noses at others, and from what I’ve heard of Charlize, that seems to be the type of person she is. Villainous may have been a bad way to describe her, but her behavior sounds very “mean girl”, and in my my mind anyhow, that qualifies her as a villain. No offense meant toward anyone who feels differently.

  12. tealily says:

I finally saw Dark Places and it suuuuucked. I really liked the book and I had been excited for it. I completely missed the release and now I see why. It was a honking piece of sh–. It was confusing and sooooo boooorrrring. I think Charlize is gorgeous and has made some good choices in her career, but maybe she’s not actually that great.

  13. Pants says:

I really thought they were done after #7 with Paul Walker’s death. Color me confused.

  14. msd says:

God, Hollywood really has no imagination does it? Charlize did a car movie and like, we’re making a car movie too and maybe we can buy some of Mad Max’s credibility by getting Furiosa on board. Urgh no.
