The BAFTAs are tonight. If you’re in America, the awards will air on BBC America beginning at 7:30 pm, although I’m guessing that from 7:30-8 pm, they’ll be doing red carpet stuff. You can see the full list of this year’s BAFTA nominees here. This is just a fashion post for all of the pre-BAFTA parties over the weekend. The biggest event – and the event in which we have the most photos – was last night’s pre-BAFTA Lancome party held at Kensington Palace. There was also a Weinstein Company/Grey Goose party on Saturday night, and most people just wore the same frocks to both parties. Let’s start with Cate Blanchett at the Lancome party – she wore this Chanel dress which… it isn’t good. At all. She’s a beautiful woman, but this makes her look SO dowdy, almost frumpy.
Cate in Aouadi Spring 2016 couture on Friday night. All of the pieces are there for me to hate this – it’s a terrible beige shade, the dress involves a built-in bib/dickie – but I actually think this is okay, even good. But perhaps that’s because it’s Cate.
Speaking of frumpy, here’s Dakota Johnson in Chanel. Check out her black-hose-and-open-toe-shoe combo. That’s such a rookie mistake. Ugh. This whole look makes no sense – the dress is “elderly lady who lunches” and the shoes-and-hose combo is “fancy New Jersey stripper.”
Penelope Cruz in a bridal-themed…something. I can’t find the ID on this, but it doesn’t seem like Chanel.
Emilia Clarke in Giambattista Valli. Why does such a petite woman wear such “big” dresses? I will never know. I think Emilia needs to take a page out of Alicia Vikander’s book of dressing-while-petite and go for simple, clean lines.

If the top part wasn’t leather, the dress would be perfect. I love the cut and the colour and the material of the skirt.

The waist is too high, for starters. I have this problem all the time with dresses, they miss my waist by an inch or two, and I’m exactly her height.
Yup! The top and that skirt do not belong together. It’s So “Manhattan Nightlife” meets “Sister-wives’ Sunday-go-to-meetin’ clothes.”

It actually reminds me of the clothes Henry Cavill’s character was having Alicia Vikander’s character try-on in Man from U.N.C.L.E.
I’ve said this here a thousand times, the GoT women have sh!t red carpet style. Emilia is not the worst offender but this dress did nothing for her. If the skirt has been a bit shorter and tighter with different shoes and if the neckline had been v-neck with a different material then it could have worked. She’s a petite girl but that dress makes her look bigger.
I like the mini dress and bag Alicia is wearing but the shoes are a no from me. I also like Hannah’s dress – she generally has good red carpet style.
I love Cate’s dress it’s a cross between traditional and edgy, perfection. I like the second dress too minus the neck design.
The only other dress I like is Hannah’s.

I think at this point some people like myself don’t care about them. Why waste time e on them. I like her dress though.

Not really fussed about Fashion in general but I love Hannah’s dress! (And, oh, to look like Alicia Vikander…sigh….)

how is is that hannah can do fashion better than most starlets? she should be a stylist ha.
First two thoughts:
Cate Blanchette could not look frumpy if she was wearing a torn burlap sack splattered with mud!
Eddie Redmayne looks perpetually like a 15 year-old! He’ll be lucky if he looks 30 when he’s 60. Eddie’s wife Hannah looks nice and understated.
And Fassy is no friend to fashion but he has a body to die for, so who cares about his clothes, LOL!
I love the second dress on Cate- the black Chanel is yuck. I liked Dakota’s dress and the sandals- agree the stockings were a mistake.
Penelope’s makes her look boxy, and exactly what is the purpose of the cross-legged pose? It really looks dumb.
I don’t understand the crossed leg pose, either, but it’s the pose of the moment.
All of these dresses are dreadful.

I love Dakota’s dress tights and shoes. Read a fashion magazine and be prepared – this look like be mainstream by fall/winter. Tights with sandals!
Agreed. She looks great. She’s not making any mistake. It works.
I really wish sheer hose wasn’t (weren’t?) considered dowdy/tacky, because I have always thought they make a leg look nice. Now, some people have really nice leg skin, and it’s ok to go bare. Me, my legs are so pale, and I just don’t like the way they look, so I wear pants. Dakota has nice legs and doesn’t need them.
But I do kind of like the way they make the outfit different–is this possibly a hint at what’s coming in the future? Probably not, I feel like the runway shows had girls wearing midcalf socks with heels, and I’ve never seen anyone do that. Still, unless it was a thing tons of people were doing, I’d never have the nerve. (Unless the dress was black and the shoes were closed toe, because I’m older and don’t really have to be in style.)
I hear you re sheer hose-and if it’s a choice bet freezing and “dowdy”, dowdy for the win! Goose-bumped, spotched skin isn’t super-attractive either! However, black tights with sandals is a look best on the young.
yes, I just don’t get not dressing warm. I personally think a person looks pretty dumb bare-legged with open toes in the middle of january in the mid-atlantic and north, but I see it all the time!
there have been lots of patterned tights on many runways, although chanel and rodarte did it best imo. sheer tights are never a good look though, even if you have perfect legs, they tend to make whole outfits look weird, especially because they don’t photograph well.
It’s not a matter of sheer hose; I think hose is fine, esp. after a “certain age” when legs can look bumpy and veiny. I think if she went neutral, and not black, it would’ve been just fine.
Love both of Cate’s looks. Love Dakota’s dress minus the tights and shoes and love Hannah’s dress. The rest are meh.

tbf, emilia and alicia have completely different body types. yes they’re both petite, but emilia is much curvier, so they wouldn’t fit in the same styling. i do agree that emilia’s dress choices are nearly always off. i thought she looked amazing in the blue dolce & gabbana she wore at the golden globes after party, but that’s pretty much the only time i liked something she was wearing. she has a lovely figure, but can’t pull off outfits meant for taller women. she should sack her stylist (and get me instead, i’m cheap!).
cate blanchett, i like the chanel, albeit i don’t love it, but the other dress is a horrible colour and not very well fitted.
i love dakota’s dress, but either you wear opaque black tights/patterned tights, or no tights at all. black 15 den don’t look good on anyone, they make every outfit look dowdy and outdated.

I actually kinda like the bottom half of Emilia’s dress but she should never go for that neckline. Whereas, I would love to see Alicia in Dakota’s Chanel. With her hair done and no black tights.
I’m always amazed at how Emilia Clarke got that ”Hottest Woman Alive” thing from Esquire. All I can think of is that it was just GoT hype. She’s got a lovely smile and seems like a nice person, but I see better looking young women every day.

Very true, but I don’t see anything particularly ‘hot’ about Emilia either. Though perhaps as a straight woman I’m not really qualified to judge. I suspect men lust over Daenarys Targaeryan, not so much Emilia Clarke.
Saint Cate of Coolness, patron saint of exquisiteness, can rarely do wrong in my view. But … what the heck has she been wearing lately??? What with the dress she wore a couple of days ago that was VERY poorly fitted under the armpits to this monstrosity … I’m in sheer disbelief and don’t know what to say. Tut tut.
