Adele in black Givenchy at the Grammys: disappointing or fabulous?

wenn23502361

This was supposed to be Adele’s big return to the Grammys after several years away. She was supposed to come back to the Grammys, give a crazy amazing performance, drop the mic and let everyone in the auditorium worship her. That’s not what happened. First off, I did like Adele’s Givenchy gown, and I enjoyed the red gown she wore during her performance. She’s lost weight in the past few years, and you can tell that she’s having more fun with fashion these days. My one big quibble with her look? This hair is not right for the Grammys red carpet. I sort of miss the beehive!

As for her performance… as I said on Twitter last night, I don’t think “All I Ask” was the right song for the Grammys. Adele is putting it out there like it’s another “Someone Like You,” and it’s just not. Her new album has some great songs that would have been much better in the Grammy-performance area. Like, “River Lea” or even her current single “When We Were Young.” Or just stick with the big smash, “Hello.” This song was just a bad call, as much as I hate to say that. Also, the sound was just f—ked.

I like Tori Kelly a lot, and I think she’s a great talent rising through the ranks these days. I also think she went a little bit too “Oscars!” for the Grammys. This emerald green Gauri & Nainika gown is gorgeous, obviously, and it looks great on her. But it would have been nice to see in something a little bit younger and more fun?

    Adele is stunning.
It’s so refreshing to see a woman who doesn’t need to show boobs/belly/legs to call attention and too bad the sound sucked.

  2. Mimz says:

She looks amazing, beautiful gowns, and I don’t mind the hair. I was not very fond of the big hair before.
Did not see the performance yet, and tbh i’m not crazy in love with this album but i agree that when we were young would have been just amazing!!

    • Locke Lamora says:

I like the dress, but the hair she had in Hello suited her best. This falt centre parted bob isn’t so flattering.

  3. Miffy says:

I think she dresses like she thinks she’s much bigger than she is, like she doesn’t realise her actual size. It’s not even about showing skin, she just dresses a bit frumpy. I guess whatever she’s comfortable in *shrug*

  4. Lizzie McGuire says:

I agree on the song choice, not her best & it was sad that the sound quality didn’t work out because even with her not so best song she would’ve killed it.

As for the dress I liked it & I can say she was one of the best dressed, the fashion in the Grammys ranges from meh to omg what were they thinking.

  5. Aussie girl says:

Love the hair and make up but the dress is a bit black widow to me.

  6. lower-case deb says:

i like her black dress more than her red dress.

watching her performance was like watching Olympics figure skating finals long program, and your favorite botched her opening toe loops, got nervous and never recovered throughout the rest of the program.

i was sooo nervous for her it was unreal. and it looked like she can’t wait to get off stage and heave she was so pale (but could also be the hideous lighting washing her out).

apparently a loose piano mic fell through the strings and distorted the sound in her earpiece making it hard for her to grasp the right note.

(an engineer giving his opinion during the performance telecast, part of a series of tweets; i think Adele confirmed it later).

somewhere in the mojave, a sacrificial sound guy is running for his life.

    • Insomniac says:

Were you a Michelle Kwan fan by any chance? You just perfectly described that experience.

      • lower-casedeb says:

        i know, right?
i wasn’t even that into Winter Olympics, or skating in particular. but my sister got me hooked on the narrative. was it Salt Lake City? it was the makings of a great comeback story… i remember feeling like i should perhaps also puke in solidarity.

      • apsutter says:

Sigh…STILL heartbroken that she never won Olympic gold. She skated to “Fields of Gold” during the exhibition and I legit cried. It’s bittersweet for me to watch her performances now 🙁

    • QQ says:

This is the perfect description of watching that performance, you could also see her worry at the sound too

      She looked GORGEOUS though

The Tori Kelly Girl which im still not into is wearing the Unforgiving Fabric so That Is all there is to say about it

    • Jib says:

It was terrible. She looked worried through the whole thing. In Taylor Swift’s song, you couldn’t even hear her – thank goodness. There is zero excuse for this at the Grammys.

And Adele had better stop yelling in her songs or her vocal cords are going to hemorrhage again. I hadn’t heard this song before, and I thought she worked on her vocal technique after the throat surgery? I cringe from the pain of what she is doing to her throat through most of this song.

    • Imqrious2 says:

She did tweet later that the piano mic fell on the strings, and that was the off tune *pinging* that sounded like a guitar. You could just see the panic in her eyes, seconds in, when the sound went out for a few seconds, and then with the piano mic problem, the lousy lighting… Smh.

She also tweeted that sh*t happens, and because of it, she was treating herself to In n’ Out (I could almost hear her cackling laugh with that one ☺️)

  7. Sisi says:

the popped zippers on the shoulders get a no from me, because they looked like she hulked out of her garment.

The red one is amazing though

    • V4Real says:

What I don’t like about the dresses is that it seems she’s wearing spanks or a girdle around her middriff which makes her stomach looks flatter but the dress puffs out right below the mid section.

    • Ennie says:

Beautiful shade of red, she looked pretty, but people are fast:
There quickly was a meme about the Shreck fairy godmother singing in her sparkly red dress, I have to say they (Adele and Fairy Godmother) looked similar, hehe.

  8. amanda says:

Aside from hello her new album just doesn’t have much to offer. One hit and a lot of filler. She looks great though.

    • Cee says:

I disagree. It’s not as strong as 21 was, but it’s more diverse in terms of sound and melody. With the exception of 2 songs, I like them all. My stand outs are “Water Under The Bridge” and “Sweetest Devotion” but these two are nowhere near my favourites of off 21.

      • Frank says:

I love the ADELE bought both 21 and 25 . 25 is an average overhyped album

      • lucy2 says:

Water Under the Bridge is my new favorite. I like the album, but haven’t played it as much as I played 21 when that came out.

I thought both dresses were fine, it’s a shame her performance didn’t go well, I love seeing her nail a song. But I agree that was not the song to choose.

  9. Maria says:

My favourite look of the night! I think she got nervous after the problem with the audio and therefore got flat and pitchy towards the end. She’s human after all! But I also think she doesn’t take good care of her voice, she sounds often strained live, as if she was pushing too much.

  10. Lara says:

An acquaintance of mine has been her stylist recently so of course I’m loving her style (Adele that is) also she’s apparently lovely in real life so that makes me happy!

  11. Alex says:

The sound was terrible and Adele could tell from the first note. She still stayed on pitch though which speaks to her talent. Whomever did the sound for the entire show sucked though.

Tori Kelly was robbed for Best New Artist and how in the hell Megan won is beyond me. She’s not new or talented

    • Dikotomy says:

I know, right? “All About That Bass” seems like it was from a couple of years back. She seemed genuinely shocked and given the real talent in that pool, I think it was a travesty.

    • lucy2 says:

I’ve never heard of Tori Kelly until last night, but her voice is very pretty.

The idea that Megan Trainor won over her (or anyone) is laughable, but isn’t Best New Artist usually the award that people get and then often fade into obscurity?

  12. vauvert says:

I adore Adele but this black frump potato sack that makes her waist thicker wth all the pleats is horrible. I also hate the hair. I think a simple, streamlined silhouette would suit her so much better, and a sleek up do.

  13. missmerry says:

I miss Adeles big hair. It doesn’t have to be AS big as it used to, but a little volume would make me so happy, it looks so so good on her.

    • Larissa says:

Money in my bank account is what would make me happy.
Leave your happiness out of Adele’s hair!

  14. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That green is beautiful on Tori.

  15. Nancy says:

Love her. She is the anti Taylor. Doesn’t matter what she wears, although it was a nice dress and her hair looked good. It’s just her essence and her voice. She is the queen and the rest of those bom bom girls can bow down to her.

    • Nancy says:

To me from me: Read before you submit….POM POM girls. Jesus Lord, more coffee please

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It’s autocorrect. In the past year, it has become more aggressive and crazy. I think it’s trying for world domination.

      • Nancy says:

GNAT: Thanks for the excuse. Sadly, it’s just me going too fast….lots on my mind. I had a friend text me very angry about something, and everything was ducking instead of the f bomb because of autocorrect. Made me laugh, she was so annoyed and everything was ducking this, duck that. Lol, you’re right world domination!

  16. TeamAwesome says:

Was it a loose mic, or was it Justin Bieber’s guitar feed creeping in during his set up? Either way the technical production quality last night was beyond unprofessional. As a singer, I soooooo feel for Adele. You could see in her eyes that she really wanted to drop the mic for a different reason than usual. As a voice teacher, she is my new object lesson on how you keep going in the face of adversity or an idiot at the sound board.

    • Jib says:

What do you think of her yelling in most of her songs? My voice teacher says she’s headed back to the operating room if she doesn’t learn better technique? I was cringing in sympathy for her poor voice through most of this song and every time I listen to Someone Like You. She has such a soulful and powerful voice, but doesn’t seem to use it wisely.

      • Cee says:

Even Mariah’s “technique” is wrong. All that falsetto will rip your throat. Same with Christina Aguilera.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

Oh my god I am obsessed with this subject. I read an internet forum once where they went into deep detail about why Mariah’s voice is so wrecked now, How she forced notes well out of her range using this really weird technique – it created something amazing but she paid a price for it. I always preferred Mariah to Christina though Christina did similar things to mess with her voice. Compare to Rhianna pulling out of the Grammy’s to save her voice (supposedly) and Adele’s surgery before 25 it does seem the younger generation are learning from their mistakes. I don’t think Adele’s technique is great but I don’t think she’s as bad as Mariah was.

      • Adrenalynn says:

Oh, I think about this every time I hear her sing! She always sounds so strained and like she’s doing damage to her vocal chords. I’m a singer too and that’s the reason I can’t listen to her songs too much, it hurts my throat just listening!!

      • V4Real says:

And Mariah is definitely paying the price for it now. That woman can’t hold a note if it came with a handle.

Adele should have had them stopped the music and she performed the song a cappella.

      • TeamAwesome says:

I honestly think she had to rethink some things after surgery, but in stressful moments bad or old habits will come back full force. There is a way to belt more healthfully, but I don’t even go there with my students. There is a raw sounding quality in her belt that has gotten better but it is definitely still there.

    • Imqrious2 says:

See my reply above: She did tweet later that the piano mic fell on the strings, and that was the off tune *pinging* that sounded like a guitar.

  17. EscapedConvent says:

I cringed for Adele during the one song I saw. I think Adele was aware as she was singing that she was off key for most of the song. She was in poor voice. Maybe some throat problems she had are returning. She could not hit several notes, but what are you gonna do? She’s out there, she has to sing; she did her best with it. It’s a horrible feeling to be in front of an audience when your voice isn’t right. But everyone has off nights. I hope her beautiful voice returns quickly.

  18. ell says:

it’s a nice dress (although it’s givenchy f/w 15 so not very current), but it’s nearly the same one she worse a few years ago. hair is perfect imo, but i do like the undone look.

  19. Sarah01 says:

She looks pretty, but could’ve maybe done another colour, like a Scarlett red.
I watched the show for Lionel and Adele. Adele was so disappointing the song was bad. I was just annoyed.

  20. Micki says:

I’m sorry I don’t like the dress. It seems fussy to me while trying not to be so.

  21. Lucy says:

I love both of them! The sound thing sucked, though. And Tori was robbed.

  22. dAsh says:

I love her performance dress better.

  23. Mrs. Darcy says:

I’m not a big Adele fan but I usually like her live performances at least – that was not good. Just boring and sharply squawk-y (I fast forwarded through some – over 5 minutes for one song?!). Also too much fog! I don’t love her red carpet dress, she seems to still be dressing for her old figure. I miss the redder hair too.

  24. Tiffany27 says:

Tori Kelly is 23 years old………That dress aged the sh*t out of her.

  25. ds says:

I have no idea who Tori Kelly is BUT her expression while Swifty had her speech was brilliant! Now, I’m going to do some googling

    • JenniferJustice says:

That was the one part of the show that I caught and I was rife with disgust. Taylor acted like some kind of denominatrix diva with her “crew” the way she was banging around, aggressively high-fiving and ordering her people up to the stage with big gestures. And then……the speech. O.M.G. Girl, take a frickin’ seat and show some humility. No way should Tay Tay have won over some of the other nominees. She knew it and that’s why she raged about people not beleiving in you and being proud of getting where you were going, blah blah. She is one conceded young lady with no clue in regards to the talented artists surrounding her that were definitely more deserving of of Album of the Year and yes, I’m talking about Chris Stapleton. How in the world ANY pop album can beat out Stapleton’s guitar atristry is beyond me. I’m angry. I need more quiche.

      • ds says:

You enjoy that quiche! I know what you mean. I never gave Grammy’s more worth than a music stars fashion carpet, but sometimes it is nice when true artists are credited. I listen to different kind of music obviously.

  26. AlmondJoy says:

She looks boring and frumpy as always but she’s a beautiful woman. This is her usual style.

I’m kind of into Tori Kelly (girl can SING) plus green is my favorite color so I love her dress. This is probably the wrong event for it but it really is beautiful.

  27. Harryg says:

    Adele is fab!!

  28. HeyThere! says:

Watching Adele made me sweat! Bad song choice and horrible sound set up! You could see the panick in her eyes and face. Toward the very end of the song did anyone else hear almost like she was fighting back tears?! But shit happens! Something tells me she doesn’t care nearly as much as everyone else. One crappy performance with tech issues to boot doesn’t define her!!!

  29. serena says:

I like Adele but her red carpet look was not good at all. Off with the sleeves at least, that dress is a tent (also matching her awful hairstyle).
Also, why should it be Bieber’s fault? She’s a super famous singer, why wouldn’t a sound-person check everything beforehand?? This is crazy.

  30. JP says:

They both look great! So sick of the trashy dressing, this is beautiful.
