Andrew Lincoln on Walking Dead character’s relationship: ‘it feels right’ (spoilers)

Spoilers for previously aired episodes of Walking Dead, mild spoilers if you’ve read the comics
A lot of people are still talking about the incredible and some say unexpected hookup between Michonne and Rick on Sunday night’s Walking Dead. Michonne and Rick do not have this kind of relationship in the comics. In the comics, Rick is with Andrea, who was killed off in the television show in the third season. Showrunner Scott Gimple told EW that “The Andrea story from the comics has been broken up and given to several different characters.” EW has more from Gimple, who explained that the new character Jesus “Is very much the character from the comics.” I will avoid posting more because of spoilers but you can read it on EW.

As mentioned in yesterday’s story, Danai Gurira (Michonne) explained on The Talking Dead that it took some time for Rick and Michonne to reach this point in their relationship, and how it felt like a natural progression. Gimple said something similar to EW, that Rick and Michonne became romantic after they had time to step back and appreciate each other. “These are two people who have found kindred spirits in each other… For all they’ve been through, when the world stopped screaming and clawing for them, they realized what they had.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Gurira discuss their characters’ new relationship in similar terms, and say that while reading the script was a surprise to them that it did feel right.

Lincoln on how he wanted to play that scene: I was preoccupied shooting the episode before [the midseason premiere] and Danai wasn’t on set for a couple days. When she came on set, she was weird — she wasn’t making eye contact and was a bit strange. I asked what was wrong and she asked if I’d read [this episode] yet. I said, “What do you mean? I was trying to save the world from the zombie apocalypse, what do you mean? I haven’t had a chance to read it!” She said read the script. I sat there and screamed when I read it. I ran to her trailer, banged on her door and screamed, “Why didn’t you tell me?!” It’s insane and I loved it! It is a strange experience because their relationship for so long — as friends and as actors — we’ve been playing a certain complicated, difficult, respectful and loving almost familial relationship. And to step through the portal into this new place was really trippy. Danai was brilliant and so funny on set and said, “Let’s just go for this; I don’t want to talk about it too much. Let’s just go for it.” We wanted it to be these two grownups and warriors who love and respect each other. That’s a given. And then they get completely surprised in this moment. And then they look at each other and say, “Of course.” That was the transition that we wanted: for it to be sexy, committed and key. We wanted it to be different and grown up and very relaxed and natural. That’s what we were fighting for. It’s that kiss it’s the kiss and to capture that was key.

Lincoln on how he thinks comic fans will react to Richonne A lot of people are probably going to have the same reaction that you and I did. It feels absolutely normal, it feels right. It does mean massive repercussions for everybody else. And there is a small matter of Carl in all this and how he’s going to react. You’ll see that play out quickly. Comic fans, I hope, will love it just as much as I did when I read it because it is one of the great and important things we have to do with our show: separate ourselves from the comic book.

Gurira on how the relationship will unfold We’ll have to see. It wasn’t a casual thing for them to connect this way; it was a realization, a discovery. They’ve had so much intimacy with their friendship but now they realize that there’s even more to their intimacy so that wasn’t a casual hookup moment. The reason why there are these expressions of joy when they’re kissing is because there’s something bursting out of them that’s new and they realize, “Oh my God, this is a really special friend of mine that I actually want to be intimate with in a whole other way and it makes total sense.” It doesn’t feel like a casual encounter.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

This is why I enjoy The Walking Dead so much. You can tell the thought and care that everyone puts into the characters and the plotlines, from the writers to the actors. Sometimes it doesn’t always work, but they’re always working at it and that makes it an incredible show.

Another scene in Sunday’s episode had Carl refusing to kill zombie Deanna and kind of saving her for her son, Spencer, whom he saw wandering around the woods with a shovel. Carl knew why Spencer was out there, and that scene mirrored Carl’s own sad past when he had to kill his mother after she gave birth to Judith. I thought of this as the episode aired and the actor who plays Spencer, Austin Nichols (I know him from Ray Donovan), also brought it up on Talking Dead.

Oh and for those of you worried that Michonne’s time is limited now that she’s Rick’s romantic interest, both interviews brought it up. Gimple was questioned by the EW reporter if this was a setup for something terrible to happen to Michonne and he asked “Can’t we enjoy this?” Gurira was asked if Rick was a black widow and her response was “I hope he’s not!” Note to showrunners: do not kill off Michonne, ok? Also Daryl and Carol would make a hot couple but I think the show would really jump the shark if that happened.

There’s more in The Hollywood Reporter, including Lincoln’s promise that there’s a ton more coming in the next six episodes.

Omg I’m so excited they hooked up!!!
When last season was airing I heard some fans say that it seemed like this was the direction the show was going and I’m so happy their predictions came true. I don’t even watch the TWD but hearing that Michonne gets a love interest makes me want to watch it now

    • mayamae says:

You might want to go back and watch from when she came on the show. There’s a scene where she cries while holding baby Judith, and when she has a little talk with Carl (both Rick’s kids, whom she bonded with first). And then when the prison fell they were all separated, until Michonne found Rick/Carl – a very sweet moment for all of them.

      • jane says:

I love the match. just wish Michonne would get rid of the hair, that has to be very heavy and hot for her. whoops talking about hair– guess the same could be said of her relationship with Rick

      • Fee says:

Jane: I love Michonnes hair. But for a zombie world,it makes sense to hack it off, don’t want any walkers grabbing her a LA girl fight, lol, n Rick should shave his head, it would look hot. I’m just giddy they’re together!!!!

      • mayamae says:

Her wig has got to be stifling. Poor Tyreese was always stuck wearing a stocking cap (with a hole) in the hot Georgia sun.

      • Wilma says:

I love her hair, but then again, I love everything about Michonne. She has been inspiration for me to start running again and become fighting fit. Her hair might be impractical with the Zombie apocalypse going on, but it also makes her kind of a mythical godess 🙂

    • Wilma says:

Yes!!!! I’ve been expecting this to happen for a while now!

      • Pinky says:

I couldn’t not see it. They’ve been playing this for years. It came to me on my own and then if if some Googking and found kindred spirits on the matter….

        -TheRealPinky

    • Liv says:

I was seeing the signs and was like “Just get together!”. They had a few scenes with great chemistry. But yesterday was somehow weird. I hope they develop more chemistry as a couple.

    • Leni says:

I know. I have not watched for the last three years-right after Herschel died but I have wanted this matching for a long time. Perhaps I need to go back.

  2. mayamae says:

I really appreciated the humor of the last episode. I was live posting, and everyone was having a good time.

I haven’t been shipping Richonne like some, but I think I’m going to enjoy it.

  3. Valois says:

Urgh, no. Daryl and Carol would not make a cute couple. Imo, there’s zero chemistry and they seem to act like mum/son or brother/sister.
Also, they somehow drifted apart anyway.

    • nay says:

Bullshit, only ageist, sexist assholes call that relationship mother/son.

      • Nameless says:

Yeah I don’t get the mother/son thing. They actors are only three years apart in age!

      • Valois says:

Thank you, Nay, but I’m no ageist, sexist areshole. You seem like a lovely person!

Carol always seems to be very motherly towards Daryl, well, imo. She was also way more mature than him in terms of social behaviour at one point (which has changed now). That’s why I included that. In terms of age and character development, they seem like brother/sister to me.

      • Sticks says:

Daryl and Carol have great chemistry. I’ve wanted them to get together also.

    • Rachel says:

I definitely get brother/sister vibe from them. Not romantic.

  4. Lucky says:

I like this development, I think they make a good couple and a nice little family. Please put a better picture of Andrew Lincoln up, the one in the title is terrible and doesn’t do justice to his very attractive face 😀

  5. Tiffany27 says:

I didn’t think they would actually do it. Ok, I see you Richonne.

  6. DesertReal says:

Mr. Real and I were cheering when they finally started to make out! He was even the one that pointed out that in the next scene it cut to his hand was on her ass 🙂 I love love love these two together. Freaking finally!

  7. HeatherAnn says:

I have wanted them together for so long too. I love Michonne! Rick gets better/worse but he has always looked to her. When he started liking Jessie, I was bummed. Yes! Yes! Yes!

    • Trillion says:

Serious upgrade from Jessie! I was totally surprised and actually thought they were setting up Deanna’s son and Michonne, actually. I’m very concerned about the “Jesus” character, but overall, it was nice to have a non-gripping episode.

      • Liv says:

Yep, I thought too that they would set Michonne up with Deanna’s son. They let her have a few scenes with Rick, then Alexandria happened and now the way is free for him and her – Jessie’s dead. Her and Rick make more sense than Rick/Jessie, Michonne/Deanna’s son though, they are both very strong.

I just have to laugh at the writers….so Richonne is happening, we really have to give Michonne a womanly scene in her towel where she asks for supplys. Haha!

      • Rachel says:

I actually thought that opening scene where they’re talking about toothpaste and mundane things like the kids served a couple of purposes. It actually set up the the closing sequence. In the beginning, they ARE a family. The “parents” are talking about the kids and all the everyday things that go with sharing your life with someone – like picking up toothpaste from the store. They’ve become a unit without any conscious thought, and at the end, they finally realize that holy crap! We ARE a couple. We just skipped all the fun stuff because, you know zombie apocalypse. Let’s catch up.

However, that opening scene was also a little too idyllic. It shows us what they could have together… right up until producers rip it all away in some horrifying way that leaves us all weeping bitter tears.

      • Liv says:

I’m afraid as well that it won’t last long. A happy relationship, happy family with Carl and Judith in the apocalypse? Dream on!

  8. TheOtherMaria says:

    I’m so happy about Richonne!

They’ve been good friends all this time, she’s checked him in the past when he was losing it, he can rely on her strength, and she’s had these very vulnerable and intimate moments with his children that are truly amazing.

More importantly, she won’t let him walk all over her and has seen all sides of Rick–they’re a great match, IMO.

Jessie always seemed like a reminder of Laurie to me, nothing more and nothing less, especially given how random his interest was in her.

I loved the road trip as well with Daryl, it was a nice break, to go from that to Deanna’s soon being able to say goodbye…

This show is really good at fiddling with your heart strings and showing a multitude of spectrums regarding human emotion.

  9. Froggy says:

I thought Sunday’s episode was one of the best. I’ve never read the comics so I know nothing about the new Jesus character but I like what I’ve seen so far.
I would hate if Daryl and Carol got together. They’re relationship has no spark.

  10. Kitten says:

Am I the only one not feeling them? Richonne seems awkward to me. I know that it’s post Zombie Apocalypse and there aren’t a lot of men left to chose from but I still think Michonne can do better. Eh. Maybe they’ll grow on me…

    • Melanie says:

I agree, I think she’s better suited to someone like Daryl . They’re both sexy badasses! Rick tends to go for women who need him, and Michone is more likely to end up taking care of Rick. Unless this is headed towards a Buffy/Angel situation where she ultimately has to put Rick down for the good of the group I’m just not feeling it.

    • MinnFinn says:

Richonne doesn’t feel right to me either. And Carol + Daryl would seem off too. I want Daryl to first get a dog who ends up being Judith’s guard dog so we rarely see the dog who like Judith never gets a scratch. Reason for rarely seeing the dog is b/c I think that’s the only way the showrunners will allow a dog. Then side-ass kicker can bridge Daryl to being a slightly more emotionally open character. Then bring in the one and only past true love of Daryl from when he was 19 or 20 and he re-kindles that.

      • Kitten says:

I like the way you think. Dogs-yes please.
And I too am curious about Daryl’s first love.

      • Pamela says:

“Then bring in the one and only past true love of Daryl from when he was 19 or 20 and he re-kindles that.”

Is that just an idea that came to you? (a really great one if so….) Or did Daryl reference a long lost love on the show at some point and I missed it? I love his character..so I am just curious what he said?

      • MinnFinn says:

Pamela, Kitten – Daryl didn’t say anything. A 1st love is my vision of how to meet fan demand for Daryl having some sex. The reason for the dog followed by previously unknown 19 year old lover is b/c I think growing his present character into even a 1 time hookup with someone he just met would take time. I think my idea would speed up Daryl getting some in a plausible way.

    • Miss Grace Jones says:

I don’t watch the show so my only issue is that I’m in love with Danai and think the Rick guy issytanstrange looking no matter what picture is up.

    • FingerBinger says:

@Kitten I don’t like Richonne either. I said yesterday Michonne is too good for Rick.

    • Nancy says:

Careful Kitten, I hate them together and caught hell on here yesterday bc I said it was gross and of course was misinterpreted. The dude was supposedly so in love with his wife and then had that crazy Jessie. She deserves better, but they do have a rather nice friendship so what the hay I guess. Not of big fan of either of them….I’m a Daryl girl even though he talks like he a mouth full of shat!!!!

      • Kitten says:

Really, Nancy? LOL..I might have to go check that thread now..I avoided it because I hadn’t watched Sunday’s ep and didn’t want spoilers. Got caught up last night though 😀

LOL @ “even though he talks like he a mouth full of shat!!!!”

        I love me some Daryl.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@Nancy, hehe…I just checked the thread again & there are new posters that really are disturbed by the Richonne relationship. They’re “barfing” etc. You know I’m a fan, but no sense getting mad over a tv show 😄

How are your kidlets feeling today, Nancy? I hope better!

@Celebitchy – I’m shipping Caryl too, but I agree it wouldn’t work right now. The best part is prob the anticipation. They could give us more adventure episodes w/Daryl & Carol at least. With a bit of flirtation & chemistry, at least.

And I AM nervous because now they have even more to lose…and this is TWD, after all. No one gets to stay happy for too long 🙁

  11. Cc says:

I’m still not ok because of that episode, it was SO GOOD. I’m so happy for Rick and Michonne, that scene was perfect. 😀

  12. Pandy says:

Yay!!! This does feel right. I was so happy to see them connect! Hoping he is not a black widow lol – I love Michonne! I really liked the way they did it as well, very natural. I’m sure Carl will be fine with it? He loves Michonne.

And I know it’s mean but thank God it wasn’t Jessie. I was happy to see that family finished. I feel mean typing this lol.

  13. Bunny says:

Huge fan of TWD. Daryl and Carol definitely would not make a hot couple. But OMG he needs a love interest. Please writers make it happen.

  14. Amy Tennant says:

I’m a HUGE Caryl shipper! I think Richonne works, and it’s great. I’d have liked to have seen a little more foreshadowing of it, but they have been a family unit with Carl for a while. Talk about a power couple!

  15. kri says:

I have always liked michonne, but I think it would have been awesome if she hooked up with Daryl. Or maybe Rick should just be with Daryl? Oooh.

  16. Pants says:

I have been stanning for Daryl and Carol to get together since forever. I hope that dream someday comes true!

  17. Lambda says:

I’m curious where they’re going to go with this pairing, though I’m enjoying the cumulated hotness so far. The thing is, I’ve always seen Michonne as a loner or as a potential leader in her own right, and now I’m afraid she’s going to be relegated to the leader’s girlfriend role.
But, Lordie, this couple is so much better than Rick and Jessie and her edible children! Nothing against the actress, but Jessie seemed so whitebread. Very inauthentic pairing, like post apocalyptic zombie fighter meets Betty Crocker.

  18. gwen says:

As soon as they locked their fingers I knew it was on. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

  19. mayamae says:

I think Daryl and Jesus make a cute couple, and apparently so does Rick. He kept swerving the car so Jesus’ head would fall onto Daryl’s shoulder.

  20. H says:

I don’t watch TWD, but I knew something happened when my FB feed exploded. Most people I know are either Daryl/Carol or Daryl/Rick shippers, so both sides were upset!

  21. Borgqueen says:

Richonne – What a sexy pair, seeing them nude and ready for war. LOL. I do think it was a natural progression, especially how Danai explains it on Walking Dead. But how will that affect the group negatively? That I didnt understand. Anybody pls explain this.

POSSIBLE SPOILER — I would have like Darryl and Michonne to hook up but I think they are setting up Darryl as the one to be killed by Negan. Right before the beginning of this season, they were tons of Norman Reedus interviews, etc., he has a new show on AMC about motorcycle culture. Plus Darryl did blow up the Saviors. And now a new good guy badass has been introduced. I hope I am wrong bc I love me some Darryl. 🙁 say it aint so.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@borgqueen – I’m concerned about Daryl as well. I hope they don’t go in that direction

  22. lobbit says:

I think their love scene was played SO well. The tone was perfect. Love them together. And man it was so nice to have a brief respite from the barrage of carnage and destruction.

  23. Goodnight says:

I think it works perfectly on the show since the actors have great chemistry.

In the comics they’re absolutely adorable as best friends (Rick even calls her that himself).

I doubt he’s really the same Jesus as in the comics. Comic Jesus could have fought Darryl and Rick and won, even though they were armed. He’s an excellent martial artist and the best fighter in the whole series. I feel like if they were to make Jesus as awesome as he is in the comics they’d wind up making Daryl and Rick in particular look less badass in comparison, so they have to tone down the awesome. I feel like they won’t address him being gay because some viewers will lose their shit over a gay character named Jesus.

I ship Darsus. I swear Daryl wanted to hate-bone Jesus right in that garage.

I like Carol and Daryl together too. I get the vibe from Daryl he really doesn’t care about the gender of people he’s interested in, if he’s interested at all.
