Henry Cavill: ‘Do you want to be famous? Then you shouldn’t be an actor’

HC1

The first three words of Henry Cavill’s DuJour profile? “Pegging Henry Cavill…” Yeah, no comment! You do you, DuJour! Anyway, Cavill and his terrible haircut cover the new issue of DuJour, all to promote Batman vs. Superman: 2 Fast 2 Batfleck. I’m just now realizing that this movie comes out in March. I guess I thought it was going to be released this summer? So, I was wrong. The release date is March 25, so we’ve got a full month of the Batfleck trying to convince us that he’s not a nanny-banging, mid-life-crisis-having douchebag. And a full month of Cavill saying words. You can read his DuJour profile here. Some highlights:

He wears clip-on bow-ties: “You know those bow ties you just clip on? I was wearing one of those, but what I didn’t realize is that as I was waiting in the line to get photographed, it had started to do this droop—and no one said a word. They all stood there like, ‘Ha-ha, you f–king wanker!’  The moment afterward, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m dying. How many times have I been photographed with a sh–ty little bow tie I’ve been wearing the wrong way?”

Landing a plum role in The Count of Monte Cristo for his first job: “I got a shortcut, and I was lucky; I could have struggled for God knows how long. Maybe having gone to drama school I would have been a far better actor, but who knows?”

Protecting the Superman image:
“This is going to sound cheesy, but it’s true. What really matters to me is Superman being represented correctly; protecting the S, that’s essential.”

Being famous versus being an actor: “Do you want to be famous? Then you shouldn’t be an actor. If you’re trying to be famous, you’ve lost before you’ve even begun. You might as well apply for [the reality series] Big Brother.”

Fan encounters: “If people want to take a photo, that’s fine. But they’re going to get a photo of me drunk.”

He doesn’t let fame get to his head: “You’ve got to be worried about this sh-t getting to your head. It’s enormously flattering, but I’m not going to throw all my eggs in that basket.”

He loves playing Fallout 4 & binge-watching TV: “When I’m not working and people haven’t seen me in ages, they’ll say, ‘You’re so lazy, you don’t do anything!’ ”

He’s not really Superman: “I don’t feel the need to prove myself. If you’re worried about that then you’re worried about the wrong things. I never put that kind of pressure on myself. I’m quite happy doing what I’m doing.”

[From DuJour]

Take this interview with Cavill’s recent Elle Magazine interview, and I’m starting to believe that he’s like the English version of a typical American bro. He’s into video games, sci-fi, working out and drinking. He likes blonde co-eds. He wears clip-on ties. He’s not an intellectual. Which is fine, because I sometimes feel like we’re being overrun by posh, intellectual English actors, and it’s nice to see someone genuinely blokey and bro-y coming out of England. Of course, the more I realize he’s a total bro, the less I’m interested in him. Sigh…

  1. cici says:

Well, he might not be an intellectual but he is still one of those posh British boys. 🙂

  2. Ethelreda says:

Sorry, but Cavill is about as “genuinely blokey and bro-y” as Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s all a PR construct, to get away from the gay rumours and his excrutiating blandness. There’s something seriously ‘off’ about Cavill. Everything he says and does seems fake. And however handsome he may be, he’s a truly horrible actor.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

      I don’t know if it’s because he’s gay, but I get a really sketchy/fake vibe from him too…

      • Ethelreda says:

I don’t know if he’s gay. I suspect he might be asexual but feels he needs to put up a ‘laddish’ front, rather like George Clooney. But something is definitelly ‘off’ – in both cases.

      • Kitten says:

This. Not going to speculate on his sexuality but he always comes across as posturing to me. Maybe I’m just being unfair?

    • CornyBlue says:

Oh my god yes. Everything about him seems so calculated and something to generate press.

      • Ethelreda says:

I honestly think his PR people literally tell him what to say, word for word. His ‘looking for a shag’ comment in his last interview was toe-curling. It’s like they sat down and thought ”Now, what would a blokey bloke say about women?” and came up with this. If it was Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender I wouldn’t mind, but coming from the ultra-dull Cavill, it just sounded ridiculous.

      • T.Fanty says:

I don’t even think they’re trying to make him blokey. I think the primary aim is simply to make him slightly less dull than ditchwater.

      • Londongal says:

agree. Something very, very, off and strange. Almost ‘American psycho’ ish. A constructed person. A crafted ‘personality’. Weird.

    • ell says:

he’s gay, he’s asexual… lmao, you lot do realise you can’t guess a person’s sexual orientation just by looking at them right? the only off thing about him is that he dates very young women, which is gross, and most of all nothing to do with being gay.

      • Liv says:

Wow, have you been hiding under a rock or something? Just go off and google it..there are many rumours about him being gay and I think his weird behaviour would make more sense if he was.

      • V4Real says:

Yes, sometimes you can guess. I’m not saying this in Cavill’s case. I think a lot of people are going off the rumors that they have been hearing about him even before his Superman days.

But I have guessed people’s sexual orientation before and was right. I said for years that Ricky Martin was gay before he came out. I said the same about Ellen, Jodi Foster and Rosie O’Donnell before they came out.

I will tell you a quick little story about Heather Matarazzo. I met her at a local hangout in NYC midtown. She was a cool down to earth girl. On our first meeting my friend and I said we got a gay vibe from her. Our vibes were confirmed when we hung out together a few more times and she asked me on a date.

And don’t start me on the people that are not famous that I have looked at and said they are gay and have been right. I have a few people at my job now that I guessed was gay and a couple of them have revealed that they are. Sometimes you get that vibe or gaydar as it’s often called or sometimes you can just tell by a person’s demeanor or the way they dress, not all the time but a lot of the times. Sometimes you are quite shocked to find out someone is gay or bisexual.

      • ell says:

“there are many rumours about him being gay and I think his weird behaviour would make more sense if he was.”

oh well then, if there are rumours IT MUST BE TRUE. and everyone knows gay people act weird. as a bisexual, i should probably remind myself to be weirder, because as it stands, i’m pretty normal.

@V4Real, it’s the stereotype that is offensive. yes, *sometimes* you can guess. many other times, like i said, it’s just stereotypes. i’m bisexual, i’ve had more relationships with girls than with boys, yet people usually assume i’m straight and i’m most certainly not.

also, on a different note, i hate the animosity towards closeted celebs. they don’t owe it to anyone to come out, and some of them might not be comfortable with it, probably because they’re not even out with their own family. so the whole of you, give it a rest.

      • V4Real says:

@elle I’m not trying to offend or stereotype anyone and it’s not a stereotype to say that sometimes you can tell someone’s sexual orientation. I, myself am a bisexual woman. My uncle is gay. I never said a gay person or bisexual person acts weird. That’s not fair of you trying to accuse me of saying something I didn’t say.

      • ell says:

@V4Real i wasn’t quoting you on gay people being weird, it was Liv’s quote. i know you didn’t say it.

      • Liv says:

        I can’t believe what you’re writing! 😉
What do you think what I meant with weird behaviour? I’m really curious. For dummies: I meant him dating women like Ellen Whitaker, Gina Carano and the super young student. His choice of women would make more sense to me if he was gay and had to cover something up.

Oh and this is a gossip site. I don’t think that we are able to “out” a hollywood star, but thanks that you’re believing that much in our “influence” to the world! 😀

    • Josefina says:

I think he is the male Rita Ora. The industry keeps trying to make him happen, but he just doesnt have “it”. They’re trying to make him relatable and ” normal ” but even for that he’s toó boring.

    • Sooboringheis says:

Yeah the whole interview sounds like the kind of things a “bro” would say but it doesn’t seem genuine. It feels really fake and hollow. but maybe he truly is this uninteresting and so so immature.

  3. CornyBlue says:

“I got a shortcut, and I was lucky; I could have struggled for God knows how long. Maybe having gone to drama school I would have been a far better actor, but who knows?”
    You absolutely should have.

    • T.Fanty says:

      *snickers*

That was my first thought, too. He really shouldn’t be saying stuff like that out loud.

  4. BendyWindy says:

I feel like a moron because I didn’t realize he was a Brit.

    • Lama Bean says:

I didn’t either, but that’s likely because I never pay attention to him. He’s like a piece of white bread with mayonnaise.

    • CornyBlue says:

His absolute cockiness is very American frat bro.

    • Anne tommy says:

To be unnessarily pedantic, he is from the Channel Island of Jersey, which has a very Complex constitutional relationship but is not officially part of the UK. Maybe. It’s probably the most Interesting fact about this vapid pretty boy and it’s pretty boring…

  5. OhDear says:

    He’s just cringeworthy now.

  6. Lama Bean says:

he is giving me John travolta vibes because of the chin cleft. And I don’t mean that as a compliment.

  7. kri says:

Ahem. What the hell kind of interview was this?? He sounds like a moron, not a bloke. And I quite liked him in The Tudors. This is definitely an instance where you don’t want to know the person behind the role. Ever since he dumped Gina, he’s just seemed ever more sketchy.Ew.

    • lucy2 says:

I liked him in the Tudors too, but beyond that I haven’t been at all interested in him, and MoS sucked big time. It’s odd, he doesn’t seem to have the right charisma to be a leading man, and doesn’t have the interesting talent to be a character actor.

Oddly enough a few weeks ago I saw two different people mention that they met/kind of knew him before he was famous and he was one of the nicest guys ever. Maybe he is, but he can’t seem to communicate that in interviews.

    • Lisa says:

It kinda makes me think less of Gina now for dating him so thanks again, Henry!

  8. V4Real says:

Somewhere along the way he is starting to lose his pretty. I will still be in theaters to see BVS and hoping it won’t disappoint.

I think they are releasing in March to avoid the competition of CA Civil War and X-Men Apocalypse both being released in May. There are so many comic book movies this year I can barely keep up. We already had Deadpool and coming out later this year we have Gambit, Dr. Strange, TMNT and Suicide Squad.

    • jinni says:

Every time these actors get huge for a movie as soon as they are done and shrink back down to their normal size they tend to look weird ( ex. BCoop after American Sniper) or their looks take a hit ( ex. Hardy, Evans, Affleck and Cavill). It’s the steroid use; it just takes a toll on them.

    • Ally8 says:

“lose the pretty” — agree! I think he’s aging, but also, he needs that Mad Men hairdo to realize his full handsomeness potential, e.g. in “Man from U.N.C.L.E.”. Without, all you see is the bland.

Also, it’s funny that he’s talking about protecting the Superman brand, cause people were fairly turned off by his ‘dark’ version of the movie which featured little sunny American optimism and too much Superman destroying things and snapping necks. The Honest Trailer for “Man of Steel” is an awesome critique in this regard, btw (my favorite line: “Superman must decide which of his two Robin Hood dads to listen to”).

  9. Pants says:

I sympathize with his love of Fallout 4, I have to limit the days I allow myself to play or I’m pulling all-nighters and going to work like a zombie.

  10. Alex says:

He’s nice to look at…I have nothing else to say *shrugs*

  11. Sarah01 says:

I don’t get the dull as dishwater, he’s a gorgeous man who is an actor, he doesn’t need to say the words ‘visceral, amazing, surreal, organic’ or any of the other buzzwords to make himself interesting. To me it seems he goes to work, acts, does some interviews and that’s it. i don’t look for enlightenment from Hollywood, just good story telling.

    • jinni says:

He didn’t use to be boring. He use to be kind of fun and goofy then he started trying to be lead actor in movies and somewhere along the road to stardom lost what personality he did have and replaced it with what he’s been showing in these current interviews.

  12. thaisajs says:

I’m so looking forward to another month of Henry Cavill making an ass of himself in interviews. If the trailers are anything to go by, that movie is going to be a mess.

  13. NUTBALLS says:

I think that the sooner this beefcake disappears from Hollywood’s radar, the better. There is nothing attractive about him and after seeing him in Man from UNCLE, he lacks even modest level of acting talent.

  14. Amy Tennant says:

I appreciate that he cares about protecting Superman’s image, because his movie DESTROYED it in my opinion.

  15. NeoCleo says:

I just like to look at him. He so purdy!!

  16. Farhi says:

I don’t like his acting but I like his interviews, they are always fun to read and I can relate to them. I like ” I don’t need to prove myself” and he is right. If you are comfortable with who you are, you know what you stand for, you don’t need to prove yourself. And if you are not then change that about yourself and people will notice. Do things for you, not for other people. I can completely relate to that.

  17. SM says:

He will have to walk with his shirt off (also something needs to be done to that hair) to distract from his talking and that hot mess of a movie during the promotion tour

  18. mark says:

You people are angry it’s a harmless interview but you decide to call him gay, dumb and boring? Why are you all like this?

    • twiddle says:

      ha, you must be new

    • Kitten says:

…and yet you still come here, day after day.

Also, I love how you accuse everyone of being judgmental while simultaneously using the word “gay” in the pejorative.

      Nice.

      • Farhi says:

Kitten, but he/ she is right. People go overboard with criticism here. I feel the same. There are a few favorites on CB but everybody else gets torn to shreds.
I don’t think it is wrong to wish people were softer. It is the curse of the social media, people don’t get an immediate emotional feedback from their opponent and they get carried away, it is a known phenomenon.

  19. rosie says:

He was so sexy in The Tudors and he acting was good in it too. Whatever his sexual preference, good luck to him. To me he is straight until he says otherwise. I hate when people try to out other people, like Perez Hilton used to do, it’s so cruel.

  20. Moxie Remon says:

The Pegging Cavill isn’t bothering me as much as those fedoras on the last picture.

  21. Londongal says:

He looks like he’s wearing Travolta’s favourite wiglet in this picture.

  22. Goodnight says:

He’s completely right. I find it interesting how not a single one of the people at my agency who claimed they wanted to be famous ever found work even though they had talent when it came to acting.

  23. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

He seems dull, but damn he looks pretty in that black & white shot!

  24. amberj says:

We were rooting for you. We were all rooting for you.

    Gross

  25. wow says:

People are going to find things about him to complain about, real things or imagined. Most of them will be based on the fact that they don’t like the age of his girlfriend.

  26. MrsNix says:

Man. I just don’t care what he’s like as long as I get to look at him. Back when he was on Tudors (Lord help us all, that boy was HOT), I hoped he’d make the big leap and do films. I have been disappointed in his work, and so his acting no longer interests me.

I just hope he keeps doing professional photo shoots…because wow. I know a lot of you don’t find him attractive, and I really think he needs to lose the hyper muscular look (his natural physique is much longer and leaner), but that FACE!!
