Brie Larson in Chanel at the Spirit Awards: lovely or overworked?

As everyone has been saying for a solid month, it’s Brie Larson’s year. It’s not that she’s banked up years of goodwill (most people didn’t know her before this year), it’s just that her performance in Room was just THAT compelling. And unlike the other “sure thing” this year (Leo DiCaprio), Brie has carried this whole Oscar season with such a light touch. It helps that she’s actually been overseas working on Kong: Skull Island for months, so she hasn’t been on every red carpet, and when we do see her, it feels special. It’s nice.

Brie attended last night’s Spirit Awards and she wore this pretty-but-not-amazing Chanel two-piece dress. I’m sure Chanel apologists will say the craftsmanship is amazing and it’s better to feel special in an okay dress than feel safe in a boring dress. But… I just think she could do better. Also: I hope this means she’s not going to wear Chanel to the Oscars?! Anyway, Brie won Best Actress, because of course she did – you can see the full list of Spirit winners here. PS… her toes are going rogue in some too-tight shoes as well.

Emilia Clarke in Michael Kors… this was one of my least favorite looks. Personally, I think this would be worlds better without the Peter Pan collar.

Jennifer Jason Leigh in Rodarte. I rarely like Rodarte’s stuff, I always think it looks so overworked. This just looks dated as hell though, like she walked out of 1992 and thought, “Let’s go to the Spirit Awards!”

Freida Pinto in Bibhu Mohapatra Resort 2016. What a terrible thing to do to such a beautiful woman. Look at how tight this is on her bust! How can she even breathe? Besides the terrible fit, this is just a really ugly and boring look.

Dree Hemingway in Chloe. This is sort of like, “well, it’s the Spirit Awards and we’re in a tent in Santa Monica, why not just own that?” Like, this dress is Peak Hippie.

    I really like Brie’s dress!

Also she’s a good example of how to campaign without getting on people nerves. I’m looking at you, DiCaprio!

  2. jeanpierre says:

Why oh why is Emilia Clarke always so bad dressed. Just say no girl.

    • Polly says:

It seems deliberate at this point. This sister wife looking dress with the hideous white pumps is the worst yet.

  3. HeyThere! says:

I actually love the cut and color on Brie. I think she looks great. I bet in person, it was beautiful.

  4. Josefina says:

Brie’s dress is alright. I’m glad she’s getting the recognition she deserves.

Frieda and Emilia – no comment. It’s like they actually put an effort to look bad.

  5. Sophie says:

Off topic but can we talk about Rami Malek’s red suit? I LOVED it.

  6. Minxx says:

I really like Brie’s dress and the whole look, very nice and light and fun for Independent Spirit. The rest is meh.. and why is Jennifer Jason Leigh always carrying really frumpy purses to those events?

  7. Norman Bates's Mother says:

I like Brie’s dress, but I think it’d look much, much better with a different skirt. The top is great, but if the bottom half was shorter and more fitted, it would be a knockout. If Freida’s dress is really ugly, what is the appropriate terminology for what Emilia and Dree are wearing? She looks almost chic in comparison.

  8. lucy2 says:

I like Brie’s. The rest, eh.

  9. manda says:

Brie Larson was in Scott Pilgrim Saves the World as a superstar megabitch and she was really good in it. She also looked a lot different with blonde hair. I’m rooting for her!

    • NUTBALLS says:

She was great in Short Term 12, which last I checked, was on Netflix.

I’ll be shocked and sad if she didn’t bring home the golden boy tonight. I’ve been rooting for her all season.

Thank you for that rec, had never heard of it. Just checked out the trailer and am definitely adding to my watch list!

I want Brie’s dress for one or two of the 6 weddings I will be attending this summer.

  11. islandwalker says:

I think that dress is beautiful but would be more so if it wasn’t two pieces.

  12. lila fowler says:

Brie should have worn her hair down. Her dress is “fun,” so the fussy updo doesn’t really work for me. The dress in general is very busy and very …churchlady. I don’t exactly care for it. But then, Brie’s style leaves a lot to be desired.

  13. felixswan2 says:

I LOVE Brie’s dress! Emilia, just no on the white pumps!

  14. kri says:

That beach cover-up is somehow the least offensive. I am confused.

  15. Kate says:

I don’t love the shoes (and Brie’s feet must not love them either), but the cut and pattern of the dress is beautiful, IMO, and I really love her lip color and hair.

She seems sweet…I am crossing my fingers for her tonight!

  16. Chinoiserie says:

It’s like all the Game of Thrones ladies share a same bad stylist (except for Gwendoline). Emilia and the rest could do so much better but she and the rest are well dressed only in photoshoots.

  17. Susan says:

    Love Bries dress.

Others…ay yi yi I hate to complain because the crazy stuff makes fashion watch fun. To me the worst dressed in their insular world are the people that wear the same boring silhouette (Winslet and Vergara, I’m looking at you!) and the best ones are the ones that elicit hilarious comments like “peak hippie” and “just rolled out of the 90s.”

full disclosure in my boring life and job I am a total Winslet or Vergara, I take zero risks. Lol

  18. JFresh says:

Lol what you said about Ms. Hemingway, Kaiser. So true.
